Luffy's pirates thought they were just stopping in for a quick bite...but now Luffy's been made a busboy on Baratie, the oceangoing restaurant, and it turns out some of the worst-mannered pirates on the Grand Line are just dying for a meal.
Always one to look on the bright side, Luffy sets his sights on Sanji, the smart-talking, skirt-chasing assistant chef on the Baratie, as the Merry Go's new cook. But it'll take more than a vicious pirate battle and a little sweet talking from Nami to convince him to leave the Baratie and join Luffy's team. His oath to feed any and all pirates in need keeps getting in the way. The question is: what do you do when the very same pirates you just fed now want to serve you up for dinner?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Today is very cold, so I just hid under my blanket and read this, fell a sleep around page 125 but it's review time! A lot of positives from this volume, as you know I watched 303 episodes of One Piece 10 years ago or something, maybe less, but with that comes a lot of prejudgments and impressions that I have from that time, most of them could be wrong, some might some substance.
Reading the last 5 volumes, I just didn't trust Nami, I knew she would steal the ship and the treasure, but forget material things, I didn't know if she considered these guys her friends or not. Turns out, she did! She cried right after stealing them blind, and since I remember her story vaguely, I now excuse her on that part, maybe my distrust was unfounded after all.
Waiting for Sanji, I was cringing on his numerous flirtations that I knew were coming, I watched the show in Japanese with Arabic translation, I couldn't swallow his flirtations with either language, but in English it's actually very poetic, and overdramatic, which makes it easier to the ear, and gives it a comedic flare, that I don't mind them as of now, but maybe I'll despise him again later when he flirts with my waifu Nico Robin.
The Hawk Eyed swordsman scene was very strong, and very emotional, and Zoro's and Luffy's beliefs make you believe! Reading the scene when Zoro got stabbed by the small knife, I thought, this is wrong, I remember he got slashed with the big black sword in the anime (after all these years I remember the method of his fall) and true enough a little later that happened.
This volume was maybe the smartest so far, first we have Don Krieg the defeated Pirate Admiral of 50 ships, got destroyed in the grand line after just 1 week, that gives the readers an indication of just how long this series will be, because Luffy's team needs to get stronger. And the swordsman scene gives us an indication of just how powerful these people are, you will wait with bated breath for more of the story to unfold, because you know more amazing characters and stories are on the way.
This was a super action packed volume, as Luffy and crew take on the muscled bully of the ocean Don Krieg as he fights to save a ship turned restaurant and Zoro faces his finest opponent in Hawk Eye Mihawk. I find I get a bit lost with the very action packed stories, as a struggle to really see what's going on in the panels. However I like how were slowly getting some insight into the bigger world, as for the first time we see that the globe is divided into separate seas with the Grand Line serving as one of these dividers. There's also some clues as to the many different powers the Devils fruit provides and how those with the power seem to congregate at the Grand Line. Things are slowly starting to pick up.
Baratie is a restaurant set in the middle of the sea, where you'd think you'd never find food. Whether you're a marine or a pirate or a civilian, if you're hungry, it welcomes you. All fights and grudges are put on hold while people eat, at least in theory (you saw how lax an attitude Fullbody took in the previous volume, just as one example). It's the closest thing to the world of One Piece for a neutral ground.
So on one hand, Sanji and Zeff's attitude towards feeding everyone, even an unrepentant criminal such as Krieg, is more than just a matter of principle - it should be the basis for how the place can operate to begin with: no matter your crime record, here you find respite. And on the other hand, Krieg's subsequent attack on the place should stand as a particularly heinous thing to do.
I think there was a lot of setting stuff here that the story barely touches upon, which is a shame. But it does still at least hint towards it.
In other news, Zoro gets his ass kicked. The first notion of the true peaks of power levels in the story, and just how far the characters have to go to get there. It's like if Frieza had first shown up before even the first tournament arc. It's where the world of One Piece really opens, and the story picks up a new gear. Good stuff all in all.
You know the drill by now. These aren't reviews as much as chapter notes for future reference. With there being 80 of these and them all being one super long story, individual reviews just don't make much sense. No one should skip volumes any more than you should skip chapters in a novel. Read them all or DNF the whole thing. :p It might help that I haven't found any poor volumes yet. Once I find a two-star volume, I may change that tune. ;)
Anywho, Luffy decides he needs Sanji (introduced last volume) to be his chef. While there on the floating restaurant, a pirate admiral shows up to cause trouble. Following him is Hawk-eye. The Greatest Swordsman in the World.
Also, Nami shows her true thief colors. I mean, not that she ever hid them, but still.
The stuff with Hawk-eye finishes, the stuff with the pirate admiral does not.
It took a while for me to warm to this volume. Krieg is a pretty boring villain in a very similar mode to Captain "Axe-Hand" Morgan, without a daffy son or similar second-in-command to provide a contrast. Hawk-Eye just kind of shows up randomly and Zolo overconfidently charges at him . Zolo is probably the least interesting of Luffy's crewmates, so that sequence didn't do a lot for me. Even Zolo's vow was pretty standard shonen stuff. Maybe the author felt that the crew needed a standard shonen manga-like character among a crew otherwise full of weirdos and girls.
In any case, we're given a pretty good personal motivation for Red Shoes Zeff and his mates to save the Baratie, and those stakes will make the ensuing battle more interesting for me.

I decided to read One Piece for the first time and document my experience on YouTube, starting with the entire East Blue saga: https://youtu.be/T_3DySjyRjk
One Piece is easily becoming my favorite manga. As usual, I love Zolo and his goal to become the best swordsman. The relationship between the crew is endearing. Nami, you bitch. However, I kinda think she's hiding something. Her words really had me puzzled though. I really want to see Hawk Eye and Zolo facing off again in the future. Sanji... i kinda already know he's joining the crew, but how is still the question.
Secrets many of the sea cooks have been keeping come to the surface when Don Krieg pays a visit. Luffy is working off his debts but the really shocker here is that Zolo runs into someone he’s only been dreaming of finding in the distant future. With the crew’s hopes of reaching Grand Line at risk and the restaurant under attack, we see Luffy put to the test to try and continue to reach his goal of becoming king of the pirates.
This was a fun volume but nothing that really wowed me. I’ve been really hoping to love this series but I’m just not sure at this point. I might give it a few more volumes and decide if I want to continue on.
Zoro vs Mihawk will always get me tbh ! I’ve seen it in the Live Action, Anime and now Manga and it always hits especially Zoro’s speech for Luffy at the end!!
It was also here where i decided that Sanji was going to be my favorite One Piece character!! I’m not ready to experience Sanji’s backstory again🥲
