We've deviated from the technical aspects of the play the characters have been working on and now we're really diving into their interpersonal and internal conflicts. I had a couple of issues with this volume. The artwork was great, but there weren't many defining characteristics between the characters so it was hard to tell who was who. Additionally, the pacing was off. I think I was expecting a little more tension and build up. While it was nice to get the background on specific characters, the story felt as though it was losing a little bit of steam. I'm going to continue the series for now, but I'm hoping that we get back to the heart of plot which is Aqua's quest for revenge....more

Not a bad start to a new series. I’m really interested in the revenge plot. The main character is out to slowly take back what she lost to a woman who was jealous of her mother and caused her immeasurable stress. Honestly, I’m more interested in what this woman’s sons think of her. Clearly they think she’s responsible for the fire, but they don’t directly say anything to her. I also wasn’t extremely impressed by the artwork. It was something about the necks that threw me off ...more

Wow. I’ve put off reading this series for wayyy too long. This was so devastating yet beautiful. Tasuku is the new kid and town and has been outed by classmates. Fortunately, he comes across a drop in center where he meets others who may be dealing with the same things. This was so damn real and done with so much care. I felt every emotion from every character. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited to continue on with a series. CW: suicidal ideation/attempt...more

I’m always interested in learning more about urban legends especially when they take place in a different country. This manga is headed in that direction but lacks a strong foundation for effective storytelling. The characters aren’t really likeable and the depiction of female characters crosses lines that don’t work especially for those that are in middle and high school. I’m glad that I checked this out from the library and I’m not sure whether I’ll be picking up the second volume or not. ...more

This definitely deviated from what I’ve seen in previous volumes, but I enjoyed how it took a deep look into what it means to adapt a work and the conflicts that arise as a result. It also illustrates the struggles that quite a few mangakas face once they attain a certain level of success. It’s gut wrenching knowing how the beautiful art we get to enjoy regardless of the medium deeply impacts those behind the scenes. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the story is going to go in the next volume. ...more
Ooo this one is tough. There are a lot of content warnings for this including: dead naming, misgendering, affairs, suicide.
The most important thing toOoo this one is tough. There are a lot of content warnings for this including: dead naming, misgendering, affairs, suicide.
The most important thing to take into consideration when reading this is the original publication date which was in the 1970s. Although there are many parts of this that wouldn’t necessarily hold up in 2024, there are many parts that show that Riyoko Ikeda was ahead of her time. This isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s depressing and sad with an intense ending that isn’t what we typically want showcased in relation to the trans experience. I think viewing this through a historical lens is important and illustrates the manner in which LGBTQIA topics and themes have evolved and been explored in manga. I’m giving this three stars because the story lacked in several areas where the plot and characters could have utilized more development. Nevertheless, I’m glad I picked it up as it’s my first title by Ikeda....more
