Ever feel like a misfit? Read this 6th installment in the Dog Man series and you will see that you are not alone. At least you aren't a half dog/half man hybrid who has just been sent to Dog Jail for life. Harold and George have given us another winner. The Supa Buddies are on the job keeping everyone safe, the FLEAS are still up to no good and harder to find than ever (you might want to have that itch checked out), and some hero dogs find forever homes. The bad guys might say "Haw, haw, haw" for the moment but it won't last for long. They will get their comeuppance!

I love the dog man series. I read them for fun. I got the new one for Christmas, i have all of the other ones too. I thought this book was good. And I think you should read the one before this because it would make more sense.

Dog Man gets arrested for a robbery that was committed by his imposter. Meanwhile the movie Hollywood made about Dog Man and his heroics is getting premiered and Dog Man and his gang is all invited.

Petey isn't feeling all that motivated to be the good guy and Li'l Petey along with 80-HD helps him to be good. Since Dog Man didn't commit the robbery, his gang along with Petey help him out. I had high expectations after I enjoyed the previous ones but this one was just okay.

I know what you're thinking... Mina why you are reading some real childish graphic novels these days???

The answer is: Although it can be childish, it is great to read when you're in a reading slump or want something short to pass the time and it has too some real good morals.

I’m so far behind on Dogman reviews. This is the 6th book in the Dogman series. I like the turn of events. At the beginning we were just reading about Dogman and his nemesis Petey the cat. But then George and Harold start reading classics in their 5th grade class and the next several books are inspired by those books. I’m giving this one a solid 3. Not awful, but not great either.

‘Brawl of the Wild’ inspired by ‘Call if the Wild’ is about Dogman being framed for robbing a costume shop and a bank. The police and judge think he did it. But his friends Lil’ Petey, Sarah and Chief all know it’s not true. They need to work out a plan to save Dogman from doggy jail.

Overall it’s alright for a 39 year old mom teehee. It’s great for kids. Has some nice vocabulary and a happy ending.

After riffing on Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, and William Golding in previous Dog Man books, what would Dav Pilkey come up with for Jack London? Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild continues the story of Dog Man's neverending pursuit of justice, as well as Petey the cat's struggle with his own villainous nature. In chapter one, Chief receives a written invitation from Italian actress Yolay Caprese to the Dog Man movie premiere. Dog Man chews up the enclosed tickets before realizing their value, but Yolay comes through by sending another twenty tickets for the red-carpet event. In Cat Jail, Petey puts the finishing touches on a gigantic bee robot he's building to enable his next escape, but he has second thoughts when Li'l Petey visits. Can Petey ever learn to be a proper role model for Li'l Petey?

There are worse bad guys than Petey out there plotting crimes: Piggy, Crunky, and Bub, the size of insects after their defeat in Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas, use a shrink ray gun to miniaturize an abandoned robot of Petey's. They're up to no good, but what exactly are they planning? The next morning chaos reigns when Dog Man is accused of stealing more than a million dollars from a bank. The evidence is overwhelming, including a photo of him caught in the act, and the dog-headed cop is arrested. The judge hands down a fourteen-year jail sentence, and a prison van takes Dog Man away. What hope remains for our hero? Did he actually rob the bank?

Convinced of Dog Man's innocence, Li'l Petey, 80-HD the robot, and reporter Sarah Hatoff meet for an emergency council. Accessing 80-HD's advanced computer system, they learn that Dog Man has been framed...and they can prove it. Upon arriving in town for the movie premiere, Yolay Caprese joins their mission to vindicate Dog Man, who is mocked by his fellow inmates in Dog Jail. As some members of the police did before his trial, the convict dogs jeer at Dog Man for believing he could be anything but a freak, too human to be a dog and too canine to be human. As Sarah Hatoff, Yolay Caprese, Li'L Petey, and 80-HD investigate to discover who framed Dog Man, the warden of Dog Jail chains his inmates to a sled and forces them to race up the side of a snowy mountain. Can Dog Man's friends save him before the warden breaks his will permanently? The villain who framed Dog Man won't go down quietly once the treachery is exposed, but Dog Man and his allies are a force to be reckoned with, and they may have one more member by the time the stage is set for the climactic battle. Will justice triumph even after the system turned against Dog Man?

Repeatedly in the first five books, we've seen Dog Man defeat super-powered criminals when the rest of the police had no idea what to do. He's routinely criticized for behaving like a dog, but in big moments it's usually his canine instincts that save the day. Dog Man is a terrific cop not in spite of his dual nature, but because of it, the melding of human and animal instinct. How quickly some other police officers forget that and cruelly taunt Dog Man while he awaits trial, locked up for a vile deed he had no part in. Dog Man risked his life for his fellow officers in the past and will again, so who truly are the ignorant beasts, and who the hero? The previous few books were more original and emotional than Dog Man: Brawl of the Wild, but this is a nice episode to the series. I can hardly wait for Dav Pilkey's take on Ernest Hemingway in book seven, Dog Man: For Whom the Ball Rolls. No doubt it's going to be fun.

For the last few weeks I've been on a binge. I decided that I wanted to read some of the books that so many of the students that I work with are reading. Why? Well, because in every 3rd-5th grade classroom I'm in, more than half of the students have one or more of these books on their desk. They aren't books that I would normally choose when I read middle grade books, and I read a lot of them. So, I read The Bad Guys: Episode 1 and also The Bad Guys: Episode 2: Mission Unpluckable. Yeah okay, kinda funny, but not really my jam, but I understand why this is a popular series. Next I tried The Adventures of Captain Underpants and it definitely makes sense why so many boys like these books. I get it. Pooping, farting, underwear. What's not to love? One was enough for me though. Ah, but then I tried Dog Man by the same author as The Adventures of Captain Underpants and I have to say I love this series. I've now read all six books and can't wait for the next one. I find Dog Man, Little Petey, HD-80, and the Captain all completely endearing. Yep, I'm hooked on this one.

Dav Pilkey used to make me laugh so hard I would almost wet my pants. Instead, he is removing the toilet humor- make that almost ALL the humor- from his new books. Dog Man started out funny, but then started getting more and more serious as the series went along, until finally we end up with recurring villains and NO PLOTLINE. This one in particular is an outright clone of the second book, but instead it's the FLEAS (not Flippy) masquerading as Dog Man (not Petey). The Dog Man series used to be good, but now the jokes are flat, including Lil Petey using the same punchline every time and the security guard that's stuck in the hole. Remember when we had Captain Underpants? Even the name makes you laugh. I will be going back to my bookshelf and reading those because they were REALLY funny- much better than Dog Man has become. I do not think I will continue reading Dav Pilkey books if the humor stays this boring.

To be fair, you must have a very high IQ to understand the inner workings of the modern-day literature masterpiece we've come to know as the Dog Man franchise. The simple, yet absolutely beautiful humor and writing are just one of the amazing qualities this book has inflicted on the entire world. Thousands of years from now, when all of society is in ruin and civic order is in disrepair, people will unearth this book and worship it as their new god as it spreads love and guidance all over the universe. Truly, a perfect bo-ic.

Ever since #3, I've felt like Petey's character development always gets undone at the start of the next book. I was really pleased to see that not only was he grappling with keeping up the good behavior in this book, he did not let his darker impulses win (aside from yelling at Big Jim, which, okay, he could have handled that better, but Big Jim hugged him without asking and that's not okay either). Very excited for For Whom the Ball Rolls!

Reread: Wow, I was surprisingly disappointed when rereading! I still love that Petey's character development isn't undone at the end, and that being good is a process that you don't always get right, and that you have to make up for your misdeeds even if you've changed, but... I don't know. It's weaker than Lord of the Fleas, and it doesn't really call back to Call of the Wild that much so I'm going to have a harder time than I wanted with my book club.

2nd Reread: I'm finally finishing the analysis of this book for my book club, and I remember why I was so impressed the first time I read it. Dog Man refusing to leave the other dogs hit me right in the feels this time.

While this book does not warrant a 5th star on my own value scale, my 7 year old son loved it and I know we will be reading it many more times. The best thing about these books, for me, is that the author/illustrator has ADHD and dyslexia and he *understands* spirited kids who don't fit inside the school box.

Another hilarious adventure crime-story with Dogman!

My favorite nuggets of wisdom include:
*if you’re going to do something, do it well
*if you need to challenge yourself to grow

Kids and adults will enjoy this book.

Read this with my nephew today and we enjoyed it, the humour was right up his alley. The flip pages were kinda neat as well. 👍🏻 I also liked that it had a fair amount of more tricky words for him to learn.

Funny

Another dog man winner!

I may be a little weird, but I love the sick sense of humor and all of these books. This one continues the pattern with reach back to other stories in the series that I’ve read.

If you really like the sense of humor stories. This is a winner!

The Dog Man books are a fan favorite among my 4th grade students. They fly off the bookshelves and students are always sharing and talking about them so I decided I needed to finally figure out what all of the hype was about it. They are definitely great books for struggling readers and they have ample picture supports, but are also relatively long so students feel as if they are reading big chapter books like some of their peers. After reading this particular Dog Man book I understood why so many of my students love them. The story is goofy and provides humor that is suitable for elementary aged kids. I even found myself chuckling a few times. It is also an interactive book, telling the reader how to position their hands and flip certain pages in order to make it seem like the comics come to life. I'm excited that I had a chance to read this book as I now feel like I can make more connections with my students when it comes to their reading.

Dog Man never disappoints! Brawl of the Wild was laugh out loud funny and had a multi-layered resolution that very neatly and hilariously brought justice to all parties (except the fleas). “Who thinks of this stuff?!!” I exclaimed, to which my 4th grader replied, “George and Harold, mom.” George and Harold are supa awesome.

I give this two stars because all my kids love them, especially the younger ones, and the art is pretty interesting. That's about all the good I have to say about it. Plenty of potty/gross out humor. It doesn't really even try to be clever. Not a fan.

I can sort of see the hype. There were some laugh out loud moments, but that was with jokes that would go over most kids heads. Some potty humor, and slapstick moments, which is appealing to 8 year old boys, I'm sure.
