SPELLSMITH AND CARVER is an absolute masterpiece!
Author H.L. Burke displays J.K Rowling worthy creativity and pairs it with Jane Austen worthy wit and wisdom like that of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, all while maintaining her own wonderfully unique voice.

This is a story like none I have ever read before and is one I will read over and over again.

Women will relate to the lead female.
Powerful, clever, beautiful and virtuous Rill skillfully holds her own amidst two dynamic male heroes.
Men will recognize themselves in male leads, Auric and Jericho, both of whom are their own special brand of brilliant.
These handsome heroes are courageous, industrious, determined, and utterly loveable despite their flaws.

Engaging from the first page all the way through to the end, SPELLSMITH AND CARVER is impossible to put down.
The mystical elements are delightful and the characters' captivating quest is an adventure I will always remember.

The skill with which Burke combines elements of fantasy, mystery, romance and adventure to create a spellbinding tale [the ending of which is pure magic!] has me quite convinced that Burke herself is a wizard!

I received an Advanced Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest review.

I only this year discovered H. L. Burke’s books, and quickly became addicted to them—this one is my favorite yet! In fact, it’s one of my favorites I’ve read this year. <3 (It’s taken me awhile to review it because HOW do I sum up my love for this thing?)

This book has everything you need for a book to be an awesome favorite! It’s a buddy story (more on that in a minute), and to add on top of that, not only is it a buddy story, but it’s a MAGICAL buddy story, in a Faerie world, with a dash of steampunk, loads of snark, and basically WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE? This book had Deborah-Will-Love-It written all over it, so I was extremely excited to read it. I’m glad to report that my initial suspicion was absolutely correct—it did not disappoint!

First and foremost, as mentioned, it’s a buddy story. I absolutely LOVE these kinds of stories—you know, the ones where there are two fellows who are at odds with one another and REALLY don’t get along, but are forced to work together with much snarky banter and possibly-perhaps-but-not-to-give-anything-away might end up the best of friends in the process, even if they might not admit it and STILL banter with each other, of course. ;) Those books/films are some of my favorite plots, and this one lived up to that SO well! Definitely one of my favorite buddy stories! Auric and Jericho are just the best and I so enjoyed watching them having to put up with each other. XD

Continuing the list of awesome: Lovable characters! Meet Auric Spellsmith, Jericho Carver, and Rill Spellsmith. Auric and Jericho are rivals—Jericho is Auric’s father’s new apprentice, and is also in love with Auric’s sister, Rill. Auric is Very Not Pleased with both these things, and Jericho is not about to be kicked out, either. Tensions run high and it’s glorious. XD Then disaster strikes and they’re forced to work together, which is the best part of the book. ;) They’re both very different and Jericho maaayyy or may not be my favorite, but I love Auric too and I especially love them having to be a team together. :P

Rill is awesome too—she’s definitely a likable character, and the side-plot of her and Jericho’s romance was AWESOME. I love them so so much. <3 There’s also an intriguing villain—I will not spoil things, but I thought the way the villain was written was utterly unique and original and I absolutely loved it. O_O And there’s an awesome clockwork fox named Jaspyr, who had a few cameos and hopefully will appear more in the sequel...

The world is so neat! The magical system was interesting, and I loved their journey in the perilous Faerie world, all the creatures they met (unicorns! Dragon! Other scary things!), and how there was a slight steampunkish feel to their own world. Just—just—Faerie-ish books make me happy! I looooved the worlds and “feel” of this book.

There’s a touch of Christianity as well, which I loved—it wasn’t a big part of the story, but a natural part of their world, and I liked that feel. :)

Snark. Did I mention snark? Because the snark levels are strong with this one, and their dialog is a joy to read. XD

It’s SO fun, with the characters and bantering and buddy-story, but it’s also heart-pounding and thrilling and scary sometimes, and so well-written that it effortlessly tugged me along on this fast-paced adventure. It’s only just a rollicking adventure; it felt like there was a layer of deeper emotion and truth there too, and just—it was so so good!

Overall, this is a fun, exciting fantasy novel, with some of my favorite characters (*hugs them all*) it had me constantly wanting to quote it... I simply enjoyed it SO VERY MUCH! I’ve heard there’s to be a sequel releasing very soon, and I could not be more ecstatic. I need more Spellsmith and Carver in my life! I definitely, DEFINITELY, recommend this book! Just read it! <3

FAVORITE QUOTES

(I want to quote THE WHOLE BOOK. AWK. And some of my faves are spoilers anyway... So these are just a few gems...)

“It takes more than time to change people, Rill,” he said. “They actually have to want to change.”

***

“You can’t skip the journey. The way you get to things is just as essential as the end results.”

***

“My head is pounding, but I’d thought it was just the stress of putting up with you.”

***

“From everything we’ve encountered so far, I think we can safely assume that anything we meet in this world is going to try and kill us.”

***

Broad-shouldered and tall, Jericho stooped to avoid hitting his head on low beams, grumbling with every step. “Seriously, whoever built this place didn’t have grown men in mind.”

“I’m doing fine.” Auric scoffed.

Jericho glanced over his shoulder and smirked. “I said grown men.”

“Push me a little farther, Jerry, and you’ll get to the bottom of the stairs a lot faster.”

“Quiet, boys!”

***

Jericho slipped his penknife under the wax seal and popped it open.

“Jerry!” Rill gasped. “That’s not yours.”

“Your father has disappeared, Rill. We can apologize for reading Auric’s mail later.”

She crossed her arms. “Well, at least read it out loud.”

***

“Are you all right?”

“No.” Jericho scowled. “I thought we’d established that a while ago.”

Janus frowned. “Sarcasm, one of my least favorite aspects of the human race.”

***

Jericho and Auric will find out I was taken soon enough. Either one of them would be a force to be reckoned with. Together? God help this idiot.

***

The muscles in Jericho’s jaw clenched and unclenched as if he were trying to rip his way through a sinewy chunk of meat. Auric suspected if they didn’t see some sign of progress soon, Jericho might begin gnawing on trees.

***

Auric scowled. “No. We’re in this together.”

“I can’t swim!” Jericho waved at the river. “I won’t get you both eaten because I was too shortsighted to learn a basic skill.”

Those familiar with H.L. Burke’s writings know that she is the female Brandon Sanderson of the indie publishing world. Like him, she has a gift for crafting deep and detailed storyworlds with brilliant magic systems. Fortunately for her fans, her books are released more quickly than Sanderson’s. Also, they’re funnier. (Sorry, Brandon.)
The excellent Spellsmith and Carver series delivers everything Burke’s readers have come to expect from her books, and more besides. I’m a little late to the party on this series due to my long TBR, so I’ve only read Book 1 so far. It left me eager for the second and apprehensive of the third, as I’m already not looking forward to saying goodbye to these characters.
Magician’s Rivalry takes place on the outskirts of a town called Mountain’s Foot. Not many details about the larger world are given in the text, but I got an alternate 1890’s New England vibe from it. I may be completely off base with that comparison, however. There are steampunk elements in the form of trains and a mechanical fox, though the book is too unique to be filed strictly in the steampunk genre. The magic in this reality comes from Fey energies leaking in from a different world, and is controlled via symbols written on tablets of wax, paper, or wood. There’s a fascinating, almost mathematical tangent to the magic system that sets it apart from all others I’ve encountered in fantasy.
It isn’t just the excellent world-building that makes this book so captivating; it’s the characters as well. Auric Spellsmith returns from his studies at the Magicians’ Academy to find that his father has taken on an apprentice named Jericho Carver in his absence. Even worse, Jericho has become very close to Auric’s sister, Rill. As such, Auric is pre-disposed not to like the interloper—and Jericho’s not too fond of him, either. But when a sudden crisis strikes, Auric and Jericho are forced to work together despite their mutual hostility. Startling family secrets come to light as the story builds to a gripping climax.
All the characters are distinct and engaging, but it’s the snarky dynamic between Auric and Jericho that really steals the show here, as their initial dislike for each other slowly (and humorously) shifts to a grudging respect. Their banter made me laugh out loud more than once. Add to that the fascinating world, the undercurrent of suspense, and the shocking plot twists, and you’ve got a book that you will have a very hard time putting down. I don’t have anything negative to say about it besides the fact that I wanted more once I was finished—and there already is more, so I have no reason to complain. Yet. If somebody dies in Books 2 or 3, then I will have a problem.
The Spellsmith and Carver books should definitely be on your TBR, somewhere near or at the top. It’s a pleasure to read indie fantasy with this level of quality and fun.

Magicians' Rivalry by H.L. Burke is a quick and easy read. It has some dark(er) bits, but mostly I'd class it as cosy fantasy.

I did enjoy the family bonds and the budding friendship, but felt it was all a bit quick. From never even heard off to best friend should take a little bit longer, even if shared peril does quicken the way.
The same goes for old family friction, which just seems to vanish with the snap of a finger. It might be due to the shortness of the book and the quick style, but I just would have wanted these worked out a bit more, as it's one of the major draws of the book.

It was still a very fun and amusing read, don't get me wrong, but with a bit more depth it could easily have been a 5* read for me.

The plot and world building were interesting enough to keep me reading. Some pieces felt a bit too contrived for me, even in fantasy, but in a popcorn style book like this, I don't mind. As long as it's entertaining me, I'm fine.

The hook definitely was in the banter, and humour, and i am looking forward to sequels hopefully bringing that strength out even more!

The story starts out a little slow and somewhat intense, but the way it develops along the way is truly magical. The foremost thought I had for half the story was, who will break Rill's heart the most out of Jericho, her father and Auric? Turns out, the story goes even deeper than I expected and it had me captivated by the end!

I trusted Auric the most of the three men since the story starts with him coming home and facing more changes than he expected. Him and his father do not get along and Rill is desperate to have peace between them. When Auric's father goes missing into the Fey land, everything changes for the siblings and Jericho. They encounter unicorns, a dragon, a creepy and strange mist, and other dangerous creatures in their quest.

I wasn't sure what kind of spells would be in the story, but even though I didn't fully understand them, they definitely keep things interesting!

"Settle down!" he snapped. Look, I know you want to get to him. I do, too, but you have to consider this might be a trap." Every time I see a line like that, I think of Star Wars :)

Even though I didn't connect with the story until halfway through, I was very pleased with how things work out and the Fey land was described perfectly. I could almost smell the lilacs. I also loved how this family does everything possible to protect one another and refuses to leave anyone in danger! Didn't like the uncle at all, but even he served an important purpose to the story. The writing is brilliant and the banter made me laugh more than once, the plot took me for a surprise but in a good way.

With thanks to the author for the eARC provided, the thoughts and comments are my own.

This book is full of action, gripping you from start to finish. It’s impossible to put down. Every character is lovable, which makes it hard to pick a side when you have to choose between Jericho and Auric. The imagination that H. L. shows in these captivating worlds she creates is truly inspiring. I can’t wait to see what trouble the characters get into next!

Fabulous Story

Engaging characters, fascinating plot, and plenty of thrills. Also a healthy dose of romance, which I love in a story. The magic system is inventive; I’ve never seen one like it. Unexpected turns, seemingly impossible problems, creative solutions, and a happy ending. Totally satisfying. I am utterly delighted with this book and can’t wait to read more!

Initial Response
Magic is cool. I want to learn how to write it. Where do I go. Sign me up.

High Lights
- WHERE TO BEGIN.
- Auric is so snarky and hilarious and just an all-around delightful character. Even though he's a bit grumpy, I still love him.
- Jericho...Jericho. He's partially a jerk, but also the sweetest thing ever.
- Rill is my favorite. She can kick butt But she's still a lady, which I love love love. And her full name? Trillium. THAT'S LIKE THE COOLEST NAME EVER.
- At first, I didn't particularly like Hedward, I thought he was really mean towards Auric. But as the story progressed and I learned more about his motives, I came to love him. He really does care for his son and daughter, and even though he's made some mistakes, he's still a great dad.
- JANUS. Okay, so, maybe he wasn't the nicest character in the beginning. I DON'T KNOW WHY I LIKE HIM. Also,
- OH MY GOSH mechanical steampunk foxes are AWESOME. Can I have one? PLEASE?
- The MAGIC SYSTEM. Oh my goodness, it was so. COOL. You write a series of symbols which activates a spell! Writing IS magic! XD But seriously, I want a tablet and stylus. Please.
- This book has made me want some things.
- Also, scary magical Fey creatures are a yes from me.
- And the snark. Can't forget the snark.

Low Lights
- I kiiiinda wanted to see some more worldbuilding. I mean, we get a glimpse into the Fey lands, but...what about the mortal world? Like, what's the Magician's Academy like? I'm sure there'll be more of that in the second book, though, so this is a minor thing.
- There were a few swears that caught me off guard, but it was totally not a big deal.

Conclusion
AGH this book was SO COOL! It was a little steampunk, little fantasy, altogether AWESOME. :D And it was a relatively short read. So, if you're looking for a quick, steampunky fantasy read with lots of snark and heart, then PICK THIS ONE UP.
4/5.

Everything you want in a book!

With all the morning glory around our place we rarely encounter any fae, but if I ever need a ward, I know where to go!
Magician's Rivalry ticks all the boxes. With just the right mix of banter, tension, action, and romance, Spellsmith and Carver take us on a dangerous and entertaining adventure filled with magic and mystical creatures. Instead of wands, spells are cast with a stylus and paper or other material suitable to the strength of the spell. The references to written formulas drew a unique and interesting picture of this world's magic system. Though I was frustrated with Auric for not listening or trying to understand his father at the beginning, the relationship dynamics were believable, and I loved how it all played out. The romance pulled at the heart-strings with the perfect amount of interaction. I enjoyed every word of this story. Another fun read from Burke!
I will definitely be reading more of this series!

This is a very interesting approach to Magic and Politics as well as familial dynamics. The book consists of several intermixed story arcs, two of the more interesting ones are the differences between Human and Fey Magic. The characters while interesting to me they could use a bit more depth. They are not quite 3D to me. however, the interplay between the characters is very interesting. One of the more interesting characters to me was a 'fox'. I can't say any more about that character as I don't want to spoil the story for anyone. One of the story arcs has to do with miscommunication and perceived slights. I am off to read Book Two.

This book was such a fun read! The family dynamics and rivalry were easy to relate to, and a perfect setting for the witty banter Burke has perfected. Every plot twist came at just the right time to take the story in a new direction, and the resolution at the end was very satisfying. I also really enjoyed the author's world-building, the system of magic and Fey Lands were fascinating to learn about. And each character was quirky and delightful in his or her own way. Fans of books such as Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and The Night Circus should definitely give Spellsmith & Carver a read!

I received an ARC of this book, or more like I demanded an ARC of this book. I had to know what a book was like where everybody has to carve their spells into wood, or wax, or cloth, or some other textile. Kind of like the Paper Magician, only not just paper.

The magic in this book is treated like programming, which made my withered coder's heart rejoice. It's all very logical. The plot is straightforward--humans only have magic because they suck it through dimensions from the Fey realm. When the senior magician runs away into the Fey realm, his son Auric and his apprentice Jericho have to go find and save him. The Fey world is toxically magic to humans, so they have to almost treat it like a high radiation zone, using magic and potions to keep the radiation magic from tearing them apart. Then you have the usual fey dangers, like seductresses that want to eat you and big nasty dragons.

I've read a lot of books with the fey recently, so it was fun to read a bit of a new spin on them. They're not good and not evil, just ... Other. But the strength of this book comes from Auric and Jericho, who have kind of a frenemy relationship. The son vs the apprentice who is treated like a son and who is dating the sister? Yeah, there's some conflict there.

This is a fun book. Word on the street is that it'll be a trilogy, so I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.

I'm pretty sure the moral of this story is "communication is important"- by which I mean that a great deal of the conflict in this book could've been prevented by one good, honest conversation. Then again, most of conflict in reality could also be prevented by one good, honest conversation, so I can't really complain. The characters took a while to warm up to, and for a while I thought this would only be a three-star read, but in the end, character interactions and the creativity of the world and magic brought it up to four.

I really enjoyed this short young adult fantasy, the first in a series starring magicians Auric Spellsmith and Jericho Carver.

Auric returns home from training as a magician in the capital city to find his father, Hedward Spellsmith, the town’s magician has taken on a magical apprentice named Jericho Carver. Jealous despite it being his decision to leave 5 years before, there follows a bitter rivalry with both Auric and Jericho determined to get rid of the other. To make matters worse, Auric’s sister, Rill now 17, appears somewhat infatuated with ‘Jerry’, who has been teaching her magic, enhancing her natural aptitude. Auric is jealous of this and Jericho’s easy relationship with his father. He had planned to teach his sister magic and to return home to work with his father - both things which he is no longer needed for. Jericho fears his position will no longer exist since the natural heir and apprentice has now returned home. Their sarcastic banter and rivalry was well-written and fun to read.

The main story gets going when it is discovered that Hedward has disappeared and by following clues to this mystery they discover that he opened up a portal (or’rift’) to the Fey Lands and went in search of his wife who went missing a decade ago. Spellsmith and Carver must put aside their differences and team up to follow him to the Fey Lands and keep each other safe from the many types of monster they discover there.

The magic system in this book is based on the magician writing magical symbols on either a piece of wood or a wax tablet using a magical stylus. I liked this idea although I could see problems would arise when Jericho ran out of the specific wood ‘quires’ he liked to use. They also needed to apply rosemary oil to their skin to ward off the effects of the strong magic in the Fey Lands - kind of like an aromatherapy sunscreen against magic - but another resource which was bound to run out and cause them problems. At college Auric has learnt some modern magical techniques which he hoped to bring home and make things easier for his father’s business but their strained relationship meant he never even got to discuss his plans with his father. He explains some of his ideas to Jericho and finds an eager ally:

“You can enchant a simple device to use a stylus and inscribe the same symbols over and over again. Not only does it take work off a magician’s hands, but the machine can go at a clip a human hand can’t. You can knock out a dozen basic spells in a minute with automation.”

There was just enough world building and description of the monsters in the Fey Lands to be interesting without it becoming overbearing, since it is a shorter book.

I was a little disappointed in the character of Rill. She had the potential to be a really powerful magician and wanted to study but happily put up with her lot of staying home with her father and falling in love with his apprentice, since her father did not want his female offspring to leave home to study or to become his apprentice. I would have liked a bit more independence and feistiness from her. I did love her animal companion, however. A mechanical fox named Jaspyr, he was a great addition to the group of magicians. I liked Hedward, although his lack of understanding and trust in the abilities of the younger generation was irritating. If he had explained to Auric and Jericho what happened with his wife instead of just chasing off alone to the dangerous Fey Lands they could have made a more successful attempt at rescue together.
Jericho was a fairly traditional romantic hero character and Auric was likeable but I didn’t warm up to him until after he and Jericho teamed up to find Hedward. I think the two characters of Auric and Jericho are more interesting together than individually.

This book was fairly fast paced and held my attention well. I was intrigued to discover what the solution to their final problem would be and found it hard to put the book down. It works well as a standalone, although the characters return for a new adventure in Spellsmith & Carver: Magicians Trial which I will be adding to my TBR list.

I really enjoyed the creative mix of different kinds of fantasy in this story. It was a pleasant read with a fun magic system based on writing (as an author myself, I loved that). I liked the relationships that the author build into the story, even if something about Jericho didn't quite draw me in the way I expected. The world on the other side of the portal was so cool, and I loved the topsy-turvey laws of "nature" there. Until one moment at the very end, I did not feel like the stakes were very high for the characters, as tension was quickly resolved. I am curious to see where the series goes, though! And I want a cute mechanical fox pet now :D

I'm an avid read of all of H.L. Burke's books, and jumped eagerly at this new one.
While the book slowed down a bit in Fey Land, as that's not my preferred genre - I like things set in the real world, more or less - it was still a fun read.
Burke's strength lies in her deep, developed characters, and she doesn't disappoint with this new cast.
New adult, vs. her usual YA fare, so expect the characters to be older and a little bit more raw - in a good way!

4.5 stars for a fast-paced, fascinating story of rivalry and loyalty with several interesting plot twists. The main characters are thoughtfully rendered and wonderfully human (or not quite human). I liked the way magic spells were done in this universe as well as the concept of rifts between worlds, and the growth of the main characters is believable and fun to watch. The pivotal scene near the end is brilliant. Recommended for fans of magical fantasy with a dash of romance.

An imaginative, adventurous tale. The story was well written, with solid prose and good pacing. But for some reason, I didn't connect with a single character and so it was difficult to fully enjoy it. I also found a couple aspects of the magical system to be just a little too convenient. It does have a lot of elements to enjoy for those who love YA.

Enjoyable

I found this story really enjoyable. I guess one of the things that had me going was how even having to understand the world built here, certain elements such as secrets to protect that actually hurt were very central.

Magicians' Rivalry is Book 1 in the Spellsmith & Carver trilogy by H.L. Burke. This is an exciting fantasy adventure with snark. There's rivalry between the two magicians, Auric Spellsmith and Jericho Carver. They must reach deep inside to find the courage and creative solutions they need to do the impossible. There's a small romantic element, but it's definitely not a romance. It's more of a bromance, as the two magicians work together to save the people they love.

I've been listening to the audio book and I find Bridger Conklin to be a wonderful narrator. He really draws me in and has a warm calming timbre to his voice. This book has a proper ending, but our heroes will have new adventures and face new enemies in Book 2, Magicians' Trial.

This is the second author I was introduced to via a children’s book first, then a YA and felt let down.

H.L. had two very different MG books I had enjoyed. The characters were fun, lively, and developed with the story. I expected this genre to have more depth and complex characters. Yet I found the characters to be childish and ... not likable. This comment is about each character directly; the relationship and problems were more believable.
The dialogue and writing didn’t flow and lacked passion or emotion. I went into this book with higher hopes of a magical adventure and characters I would fall in love with, but it didn’t happen. It’s like although the characters were older, it was still written for a younger audience with its juvenile simplicity, sentence structure, and vocabulary. It contained the telling not showing that dominates an elementary reader/listener.
I would love for this book/series to be rewritten and developed more intricately.
As it stands, the book is a 2.75; the narrator would bump the audiobook to a 3 overall, but the book would be a 2, unfortunately.

Apparently I didn't review this book like I thought I did, so almost two months after reading, I shall make an attempt.

Gaslight/steampunk fantasy is quickly becoming a favorite subgenere of mine, and I think I'm going to blame that on HL Burke. She makes such intricate and neatly detailed worlds along with relatable characters and some amazing humor.

Auric and Jericho probably couldn't be more different, and they're determined to hate each other in the beginning. But after being forced to work together, they develop a truly wonderful friendship. I was laughing the entire time at their banter and little brotherly moments towards the end. The magic system was neat and I like how they had to draw spells and all the details and calculations that had to be made to cast it just right. Made for some interesting spells and/or mishaps. :P

I should have written this when it was all fresh on my mind, because it was an awesome book! I'm really looking forward to continuing the series because it looks like it only gets more epic from here. :)

Oh, this was a fun little book! Not heart-pounding action or gut-wrenching emotion, but it's just a down-right good story with likable characters and one of the coolest magic systems I've found. (If you're a fan of The Rithmatist this is a good bet for you.) Definitely looking forward to reading more books in this series.

I loved it! This book has everything! Snark, wit, conflict, magic, even a romance. Spellsmith and Carver: Magician's Rivalry, proves to be the first book in what is sure to be an exciting series.

When Auric Spellsmith returns home from his education in the capital, the last thing he expects is to learn that his father has taken an apprentice. The family business was meant to be his. This Jericho has to go.

The rivalry starts off strong with Jericho determined that some prodigal son will not kick him out of his hard earned place. Auric left, he abandoned his younger sister. A sister that Jericho has lost his heart to.

Now Master Spellsmith is missing, can the two rivals work together long enough to find him or will their rivalry doom them all.

I can't wait for the next one.

I think this is a story for older teens, maybe, but I really did not like the cursing in it. The characters are cursing one minute and praying to God in the next. I was not favorably impressed by that. Also, it is more magic than steampunk, there is an automaton-type fox, but other than that, I don't see much steampunk at all. There are some likeable characters. The plot itself is pretty good. Sorry, I am not trying to be mean/unkind to the author, but I read a lot, so I am a picky reader. I am also a follower of Jesus, and just don't see how this book can be pleasing to Him.
