Sandman #2

Requiem & Reverie

Rate this book
It takes a killer to catch a killer.

And no one understands the motives of ruthless murderer, The Sandman, quite like Rhett Voss.

Having spent his childhood in the shadows of the deranged lunatic, he’s become an expert on the topic. Killing is in his blood, and as a hitman for hire, Voss maintains a steady diet of carnage, himself.

Except lately, it’s lost its appeal. Until he’s enticed to track down the clever Sandman who has his sights set on Nola Tensley.

The stunning single mom is a distraction Voss can’t afford, but to catch his elusive kin, he needs to watch the next victim closely. Consequently, stalking her soon becomes a dangerous obsession, turning a friendly game of cat and mouse into more than he bargained for, when someone close to Nola goes missing.

Suddenly, it’s no longer an old vendetta fueling Voss’s need to hunt down his enemy, but new stakes that are sure to mean more bloodshed. Voss knows better than anyone, though: to draw a killer out of hiding, one must have the right bait.

And both of them want Nola.

I was right. I love when I'm right. I love when I'm reading a whodunit and the author gives me tons of suspects and my first instinct is the right one. It feels awesome!! Anyhoo, part II picks up right where the last book left off and the author turned things up a notch. The Sandman is hitting a little closer to home and Nola loses her mind. Between her cop brother and his squad beefing up security and Voss putting his many skills to use, she still thinks she knows better than them. Arrrgggh!! So frustrating...

She's lucky that Voss is so gaga over her.

She is poetry and madness wrapped in fire. An unreachable paradise for a soulless bastard like me.

But it does work out in the end, because Voss is just that badass.

The stumps where his arms and legs used to be are healing nicely, where I've cauterized the flesh, but his eye sockets appear to be leaking white pus, and his skin feels hot when I set him down on the plastic sheet beside his bed.

Sounds so yummy! This story was full of twists and turns and even in the end, it still feels like there could be so much more. This duet was my first read from Keri Lake and she's found a new fan in me!

Requiem & Reverie is the conclusion to The Sandman Duet. The timeline picks up directly where it left off and the stakes are high for Nola Tensley to keep her son safe and to stay out of the grips of a killer who is loose and on the hunt. As Nola grows closer to her tenant Rhett Voss, the lines between right and wrong blur and it appears as if no one is safe.

"Wait, please! Don't!"
Told in multiple POV, Requiem & Reverie is a stunning conclusion to the dark and twisted duet. Although I wasn't taken by surprise with the ending, the intricacies in the plot and the complexities of the characters kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read! In addition to the thriller aspect, we also experience the love a mother has for her son and non-stop RAW passion between Nola and Rhett.
"His cock expands inside of me, waxing my walls with every furious drive of his hips."
Overall, Keri Lake has always been one of my favorite authors and when it comes to dark romance or thrillers, her dark and creative expertise always rise to the occasion!

Without interruption in the timeline, the game of cat and mouse continues as the Sandman raises the stakes. By toying with Voss and luring Nola, the plot landscape is set with tension mounting and emotions running high. Voss is determined to protect what is his and Nola is prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice.

“I cannot wait to have this bastard under my blade.”

As the author spins a web of rich layers and staggered clues, the entire plot unfolds at a quick pace. Additionally, creeping into the recesses of insanity is fascinating and I like how the darker elements remained true to the characters and the nature of the theme.

“I didn’t kill them. I’m not a murderer. I made them better. Pure.”

Though the reveal wasn’t a surprise for me, I was relieved to read how the story allowed for the sinister level of physical and psychological components. As for Voss and Nola, their relationship seemed rushed and one particular part misplaced. Despite this, Voss still exudes raw power that can be harnessed in such sexy ways. Of course, one younger character deserves a shout out for being such a bad ass.

Requiem & Reverie is a dark and disturbing romantic thriller that will keep a reader on the edge. I hope Keri Lake will continue to write in the theme of thrillers because this duet is an extraordinary foray into the genre.

After a recent tragedy, Nola Tensley tried to get back her life to a normal routine. But tension mounted as Rhett Voss presence started to raise suspicions. With her family safety in jeopardy, she must decide who to trust or risk losing everything she held dear.

For the first time in my life, I have nothing to live for, and it occurs to me how terrifying that is. How easily one can be swayed into thoughts that’d otherwise seem absurd.

This time around the stakes were much higher for both characters. I loved seeing how they handled the pressure and what they were willing to sacrifice for the end goals. Personally, I would have preferred less romance and some things felt out of place considering the character and the book content/feel.

I’ve loved the Sandman since book 1 but I wanted something more especially that his role was predictable. I did enjoy discovering the connections with all the cringe-worthy revelations.

The sight of her is darkly beautiful. The agony etched on her face, a clash of sadness and pleasure, as she opens her mouth to a moan.

Requiem & Reverie is the conclusion to The Sandman duet. This series would appeal to fans of dark and sexy Romantic Thriller.

I enjoyed this duet quite a lot. This book picks up right after book one, and we get more twists and turns and revelations (one which completely ruined Voss for me...sigh). I enjoyed the cat-and-mouse game with the Sandman and the author did a good job of keeping us on our toes. All the characters remained intriguing, and the ending wrapped things up in a satisfactory and somewhat opening ended way.

Unfortunately, even though I enjoyed the book, I couldn't rate it as high as I did book one for two reasons. One, I was hoping for more of a twist with the Sandman. I think the revelation of who he was, was extremely obvious. In fact, I laid my theory out to a friend after book one and I had it 98% right. So I was a bit disappointed with that. My second issue, and this is a spoiler so only click on it if you don't mind being spoiled!!! Alas, that was just a "ME" issue and I doubt it will bother many people.

Even with those two issues this was still a very good duet and I can't wait to see what this author has up her sleeve next.

After reading Nocturnes and Nightmares I moved straight onto this book. I was fully hooked and wondering why I’d not read anything from this author before.

The Sandman is continuing his killing spree and he’s getting closer to Nola. Voss seems to be one step behind. Left playing catch-up as things escalate.

I have to say I picked out the Sandman early in the first book. Normally I’m disappointed when I’ve figured it out so soon but that wasn’t the case here. Even knowing the identity of the villain the story still kept me reading. I was going to complain about a couple of small plot holes but they were tied up at the end.

At the end of the book there’s an option to download two different bonus scenes. A dark and a light one. This is a fabulous idea and I wish more authors would do this.
The first time I came across this was Willow Madison’s True series. She offered two completely different, alternative endings and I loved it.

But I digress.

I really enjoyed these two books and I think Juniper Unraveling is next for me.

Requiem and Reverie picks up right where book one ended.  Voss and Nola are discovering new feelings towards each other that neither were expecting.  The Sandman is enjoying playing with these two characters and there's so many suspects now that we don't know who to trust.

❝ He's a manipulator.  A psychopath.  He will crawl beneath your skin and make you questions yourself.

There were some scenes that seriously had me questioning my sanity.  I was like holy cow, what in the world am I reading this is all fucked up hahaha.  The plot is so messed up and I can't helped but like it.  I do however wished that the ending would have been a bit different.  Somehow I felt it needed to be a bit more darker and less flowers and unicorns but still I liked the story and the concept of the duet.

Requiem & Reverie is a dark and disturbing romantic thriller.  Readers who enjoy that genre will find this book appealing.  The author did an incredible job keeping readers on the edge and wanting more of this story, you will not be disappointed.

I love Keri Lake but i didn't loved this duet as much as the other books i've read from her.

Mystery/serial killer/romance i thought this was going to be so good but the execution fell flat for me.

I liked the first book a lot more. It had so much potenial bc i found the whole serial killer storyline so interesting and also i liked Voss and Nova in the begininning BUT i didn't really like how the story went in the second book.😐
Nova started to annoy me sm and Voss was such an intruging character in the first book so as a trained killer i expected a lot more from him. He kinda faded into the background.

But the main thing that ruined this duet for me was actually the killer reveal. It was so obvious from the begininng who the killer is so the suspense was non excistent. I expected some twists and turns and one thing that was revealed in the end about Voss and Nova's sister ruined their relationship for me. I think that was not necessary.

I would liked if there was some relationship development between Nova and Voss and not just them having sex.

Requiem and Reverie is the conclusion to Nocturnes and Nightmares. A duet of all things dark and twisted. A slow, sexy burn in romance. A mystery filled thriller that will keep you on your toes from start to finish. I'm going to keep my review short, no spoilers from me.

Keri Lake writes with exhilarating purpose. I did not let out a breath until the last page. I'll be definitely adding The Sandman Duet to my favorites list. These two books have everything I love in my dark books, just the right amount of romance, mystery, suspense, and depravity. An array of emotions, too. This story had me looking over my shoulder, gasping with revelations, and wishing for a delicious anti-hero to corrupt me. All the highs and lows. All the everything. I can't praise enough. It's edge of your seat greatness. I need everyone that loves the gut-punch moments and suspicions to read this. I'm telling you, this book, this duet, hits all the marks.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

She is poetry and madness wrapped in fire. An unreachable paradise for a soulless bastard like me.

This was so much better than the first book IMO. It had everything I wanted. What I didn’t want though was some stupidity from the heroine although she wasn’t TSTL.

I’m using some of my review from book one as I just can’t be arsed to write it again.

Let me say that I love Keri Lake’s work, she is a smooth and flawless writer sucking you into the world that she has created and here it is no different.

Nola Tensley has had a tough life but she has done her best to handle. Every. Single. Shitty. Situation. Nola’s worst nightmare has happened and there is only one person who can really help her. Voss.

I still like Nola apart from that one moment and well I docked half a star because I can.

Voss is still playing and the stakes are real high on this one but there is more than meets the eye. Who really is the Sandman?

I love Voss although I this time he was better to read. He is a bit screwed in the head although his badarseness really comes out here at the end. Apparently I like psychopaths, who knew?

The story of the Sandman Killer is interesting and I am invested but that ending was well I have no words really. Will there be more to the series? Or will the Gallows get books? Very open ending here.

I like things all neatly tied up. Ms. Lake in no way whatsoever holds back. Again. She goes at this book full throttle. The romantic suspense is good between the main characters and it only really heats up in this book. I was a sucker for the ending though between Nola & Voss.

I so knew what her sister played for a role.

This duet is seriously good, especially for those who love thriller and action. This is a nail biting, gut twisting page turner with main characters who were so broken yet willful at finding this sadistic, disgusting serial killer. Romance was blended in well, along with dark themed sexy bits.
And the retribution the killer faced at the end...i wish you could hear my applause, i'm still clapping!
HIGHLY recommend this, can't wait to check out other books by this author.

Cheesy. Predictable.

A heroine that was not very interesting in book 1, becomes downright stupid in book 2. Moving on.

A hero that WAS interesting in book 1, call me intrigued with his opening torture scene... becomes a wuss and a deviant in book 2, saved by an 11 yr old boy.

Won’t be reading more from this author.

A dark and twisted story of “do you want to play?”

Alrighty then, I definitely kept going back and forth regarding the killer and lots of omg and at times Nola annoyed the f@&$# out of me, what I did not expect was the ending, now I can’t wait for the third book.

Dark, twisted, and suspenseful.
The story continues with more emotional intensity and higher stakes as the FMC faces even greater horrors from her past and present. The relationship between the main characters deepens, with an intriguing mix of vulnerability and passion.
This duology was great 👌👏.

Requiem & Reverie is book 2 in The Sandman Duet and believe me if you thought book 1 had you on edge wait for book 2. My anxiety was through the roof with this one, I can't believe as I read this book I still had no idea who the Sandman was. It was both frustrating and thrilling. In the end your left with an uneasy feeling for the characters but you know at some point it will be done. The Sandman Duet was a great ride and I look forward to what this author gives us next.

The author ramps up the intensity in the conclusion to this creepy thriller, with an ending that had me wanting to scream and clap all at once.

Going into book two of this duet, we know the following:
Nola is in grave danger.
Voss is doing his best to stay ahead of the Sandman, but he's lacking anything solid to track down this psychopath.
The Sandman is losing patience.

It doesn't take long for things to go sideways in this book, when Nola and Voss leave their guard down just long enough. And Voss' lack of honesty with Nola gets him into some hot water, where he is forced to prove he's good, at least in regard to the threats facing her and her family.

Despite understanding her rational, I thought Nola was reckless in this book. I get that she wanted to play a key role, but I don't think she realized the cunning, ruthless nature of who she was up against.

The identity of the Sandman is eventually confirmed in this book. Without giving anything away, my suspicions on his identity weren't too far off. As a reader, the author gives you enough in this book to sort it out before the revelation, although she throws in some tricks to keep you second guessing. And the author doesn't tone down the Sandman's POV. The creep factor is high, my skin started to feel itchy.

"You want to know why we do it, Sunshine? Why we kill so easily, and without conscience?" . . . . . . . .
"We do it because we can."

Eventually, despite several missteps along the way, Voss comes thru in the end for Nola and Oliver. This was definitely the most intense part of the book and had my heart racing. The author also did something that I look for in anti-hero books. She allowed the anti-hero to grow, allowing the romance element, while still remaining ruthless.

"You channel that anger towards those who warrant it. Those who hurt people. Not the ones who protect."

As I alluded to in my intro, the ending is huge. I was genuinely shocked about the last chapter. I won't give it away, but it is exactly what I love from thrillers, that last gasp on the last page. Yes, as a reader, you may freak at the author and demand more, but I personally love the open ending, which has your imagination take over.

This was a great duet for lovers of darker romance and thrillers. Highly recommend!

Yes, Keri Lake did it!!! If you had any doubts, let me tell you, Requiem & Reverie, the second installment of the Sandman Duet, is just as amazing as Nocturnes & Nightmares! And I'm so glad it releases just a few weeks after the first book, otherwise the wait would have killed me!

The game keeps going, darker and darker, faster and faster. Oh the thrill!!!! The intrigue kept me on the edge of my seat.

“You want to know why we do it, Sunshine? Why we kill so easily, and without conscience?”

Paragraph after paragraph, I kept biting my nails, making hypotheses, wondering how things were going to end for Nola, Voss and Oli.

The author definitely mastered the psychological state of mind of all her characters. Through chilling scenes, we learn more about Voss. I absolutely love Keri's anti-heroes, and this one is lethal, driven and determined to solve the puzzle that is the Sandman.

"It’s the goodness in her, though, that attracts the predatory instincts in me.

Nola totally broke my heart in this opus. It was so easy to relate to that mom and her fear, despair and courage, even in the most hopeless situations!  Nola and Voss' fights, their depraved games and their raw and sweet moments gave the perfect rhythm to this twisted series.

"Holding tight to her elbows, I allow her to take her aggression out on me. Punching and kicking, pushing and scratching."

The equilibrium between the difficult themes (such as rape, incest, torture) and Nola and Voss' love story was simply striking.

Caught up between the betrayal, the intensity, and the anticipation, I couldn't stop reading. Until. The. Very. Last. Words. Which wrecked me!!! Boom.

I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED AN ARC COPY OF THIS BOOK. THANK YOU!!!

Yes! My Spidey senses were right on target in the first book! But the major mind fuck was that although I was right, that wasn't all there was to it. Continuing on the journey with Rhett, Nola, her son Oliver, and the Sandman slowly working his way towards Nola was one crazy ride! There was so much to the finale between the sex ramping up between Rhett, who started to let his true colors come out and Nola that finally stopped repressing hers,

“You love this, don’t you? You and me? We’re the same breed.” He groans on one hard thrust, and at the fullness of his erection slamming into me, I cry out. “I was right about you,” he says raggedly."

to the heartbreak of a mother going to the point of questioning her sanity at the possible loss of what is most important to her, to complete insight into Rhett's absolutely horrific childhood and how it ties to Nola's, to the Sandman slowly laying his trap to take Nola as his final trophy while Rhett madly tries to stay one step ahead of him or at least be ready for the final countdown.

The whole ride through to the end was a whirlwind and the Sandman truly was deranged and scary as hell. The entire book was a hold on to your seat ride and even the ending in itself was a mind fuck! I'd usually be more specific but this story had so many secrets, buried mysteries, atrocities and suspense that it kind of feels like going into it any deeper would be a spoiler for anyone reading it. This is one to experience for oneself and white knuckle your way through!

I will say one thing though, Rhett Voss, in all his kink, depravity and killer instinct was one hot piece of male and it's all there in one sentence...

“He wouldn’t happen to be a tall drink of water in a suit, with dark hair and wicked, fuck-me eyes staring at you?”

Enough said.

I loved this book and I even though I'm used to tight endings I think it was fitting given the tone of this book that it finished as it did. Finally, I think the author encapsulated it best with her quote at the beginning -

All extremes of feeling are allied with madness.

That is exactly what this book felt like and I relished every single minute of it! 5***** very twisted, complicated stars!

Want to play a game?

When a book didn't end up with a BAM! It hurts me to rate this solid 3 stars because, hey, it is Keri Lake. But I couldn't force myself to love it.

→ everyone is sooo prickly.
→ Nola is became a hella annoying. maybe single mother didn't work for me. hard to sympathize with her situation. sorry Oliver.
→ calm and collected Voss didn't feel like a pro killer anymore. Yes, he collect the puzzles like a true detective but he didn't have the spotlight as an "anti-hero". surprise, surprise...
→ didn't feel chemistry between Nola and Voss. sometimes cheesy and unnatural; like they need to be together whatsoever.
→ dull. hollow truth. that's what I feel. The Sandman is only a disturb person after all. not worthy as a serial killer.

The opening was promising but it went down the hill towards the end. Like i said in the previous, I already suspect the Sandman. Totally fishy person. Or I've seen too many killer/detective tv series. Overall, Requiem & Reverie has predictable story and could be wrapped up more nicely.

Love the bonus scenes though. Dark and Light.
Still looking forward to read the author in the future.

Review for the duet:

I loved how short these books were, making them easy to binge. The audiobooks held my attention from start to finish, which is rare for me since I usually lose interest with longer audiobooks. That wasn’t the case with this duet.

I’ll keep this review short and sweet (shorter than my norm), much like the books themselves. A chilling serial killer known as The Sandman is on the prowl, and one man suspects a link between the killer and his own past. Meanwhile, a newly widowed mother appears to be The Sandman’s next target as he takes victims in pursuit of his ultimate plan. The fate of these victims is utterly horrifying—I can’t shake the disturbing image of a latex suit from my mind.

⏳ “She is poetry and madness wrapped in fire. An unreachable paradise for a soulless bastard like me.”

I had a strong suspicion about the killer’s identity, but the motive and their connection to the rest of the characters remained a mystery. Even the final twist in the epilogue threw me for a loop. The spice was well-balanced and didn’t overpower the plot, which I appreciated.

The ebook version includes two bonus chapters that let you choose between a dark or light extra ending. I couldn’t resist downloading it for that bonus content.

Literally the perfect conclusion to this duet! But I wish it didn't have to end. More action, more mystery, more angst, more steam. And the stakes were even higher. I adored this sequel and it made me fall in love with Keri's writing all over again. And that epilogue?! I can't. It was so clever. Fans of romantic suspense, heavy on both, I highly recommend.

Requiem & Reverie was a tension filled read that had me at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I loved every moment of it. Although I predicted who the Sandman was while reading the first there were some things that didn't see coming which heightened my overall reading experience, making it that much better. I loved this duet and highly recommend it.

I set out reading this duet with a heightened excitement, because as an author, Keri Lake never, ever ceases to surprise me and always, always, hurtles me away from my comfort zone. She is a phenomenally talented writer and is definitely one of the few authors I think is under rated.

With this duet, Keri doesn't just teeter on the line of shocking and dark, she jumps the line. She tests her readers ability to enjoy the dark, twisted and horrifying. Admittedly, I have read some of her stories with one eye open, and the other squinted. But with this duet, I had to skim and even skip some parts. This thriller was at times to difficult for me to read. I think this would make an excellent movie, one that I would watch and enjoy. I saw a friend over the weekend and explained it this way: "There's something so much more intimate about reading than there is in watching the same story as a movie." It's like the author (a good one, anyway) gets inside your head while she's/he's telling you their story. They manipulate your senses, your fears, your feelings and thoughts, while your imagination brings their story to life. And this is perhaps why, I had a difficult time enjoying this duet.

The material was dark, violent and assaulted all of my senses and left me with nightmares, even when I only read during the day. This is definitely full of triggers and not for the faint of heart. There were many times when I was going to stop reading, because I just couldn't take anymore. But, to me, the hallmark of a good writer is one who captures you and doesn't let go until the end.

So, while I may not have enjoyed the storyline, I definitely appreciated the writing and the storytelling.

Finally finished this Duet out and I was definitely as entertained with The Sandman as I was with Book 1, Nocturnes & Nightmares. The mysterious Sandman remained my favorite character throughout the Duology. I also really loved the ending! I thought that was such a cool way to leave things with this story.

In my personal opinion, I really think Keri Lakeshines with her Villainous Characters. She fully commits to those characters and making sure every inch of them are evil. I have to give her some respect on that aspect.

The conclusion of Nola and Voss’s story. It starts up right where we left off, and gets going straightaway. We learn a lot through flashbacks and discover some connections between the main players. The romance is a little insta, but it was nice to have some steam. Nola makes some borderline TSTL decisions, but I could understand her desperation. Voss mellows out for a while, but gets it back by the end.

Overall, I really liked it. I was glued to my kindle, and read straight through. I only had a few grumps. I did figure out the twist/villain early so that part wasn’t much of a surprise. I still wish we would have had more Oliver time/development, and I felt like the ending was a smidge rushed.

Bottom Line- This is romantic-ish thriller with lots of action and a mystery. Both MC’s are pretty likeable, and there’s a little steam to go with the murder/torture. I liked having all 3 POV’s: Nola, Voss & Sandman, but wish we would have just gotten a little more of the couple’s future with the ending. There’s an epilogue that has a twist I didn’t see coming, but doesn’t shed any light on what the future will look like for N & V. I recommend anyone who likes a dark romantic thriller to give it a shot. It’s free to read with KU.

The ARC for this popped up on my kindle and I immediately halted whatever I was reading so that I could dive into this one because I truly had to see where Keri was taking this duet and who the Sandman was!!

Requiem & Reverie picks up exactly where Nocturnes & Nightmares ended and it does not slow down one bit.

We are still getting viewpoints from Voss, Nola and the Sandman which just keeps the whole plot all the more entertaining and engaging. Something that I want to point out that may bother some readers, but something that I think takes great talent in a writer. Both Voss and Nola's POV are written in first person while The Sandman's is written in third. I loved this switch up and thought it was quite unique.

On to the book itself -

Keri holds nothing back in her writing and doesn't sugarcoat anything. This is a romantic suspense/thriller and she keeps us at the edge of our seats the whole time.

I refuse to say anything about the plot except that it is non-stop suspense, action and steam. And I love how Keri ends this duet - just when you think you're going to get a certain ending, you don't. And I love that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this duet and I really hope she writes more like this.

4.5 stars ~ Jess
A great conclusion to this duet.

Where part one set the stage and part two was where I was left holding my breath. Picking up right where you leave off and right in the thick of it. This book was where the secrets come out. Nola finds out who Voss really is. She questions her sanity and everything that has gone on for the last number of months.

Voss is trying to get closer to answers only for every step forward he is three steps behind. He is also questioning his feelings for Nola. He doesn't know what to do with them, or where they fit in his life, but he does know they are distracting and not always in a good way. He has a mission to close and things are getting messier and messier.

This conclusion felt like it flew. Maybe it was because it was filled to the top with action and trying to get all of the puzzle pieces in order. You are trying to figure out the mystery right along with everyone else and all of the dark and gritty parts were fascinating. And then even in the end I still had the "well I didn't see that" moments. Eloquently thought out story-line, sexy and unforgiving anti-hero, strong female and supporting cast. Overall a winner.
