When true love and passion is at stakes, Jaime and Marcus must learn how to know when the right time is the right time and that hiding their true feelings is inevitable...

Everyone who knows me, knows that I am the biggest lover that is anything by Tessa Bailey. Already I have read two of her newest upcoming novels this year, and they never stop being as incredible as the last. This was my very first MM romance and I am beyond glad that I did not miss out on it. I mean, how can I possibly do that? We first met Jaime and Marcus back in Mouth to Mouth, Rory and Olive's story. Yet another novel created by the mastermind that is Tessa, she brings these two characters in which when I first read about them I knew that there was spark and love there. And having a story for Jaime and Marcus is something that I am so enamored of the idea, and the actions Tessa decided to take. And after reading their story, I can officially say that I have popped my MM cherry ;)

Jaime and Marcus, as previously mentioned, are brought up in the first installment in the Beach Kingdom series. When you first encounter them, you know that they have this friendly yet witty banter to them that you are instantly drawn to and are curious about. Jaime, a high school teacher whom during the summers helps out his brothers at their nearest beach (which by the way, I live like twenty minutes away from because the novel takes place in the same island that I live in) and local bar that they own, is this open man about his sexuality un-like many rugged gay men that I have heard or known of. He doesn't flaunt around about his sexuality, but he is not ashamed to admit it either. That's when Marcus comes into place. Marcus, a lifeguard at the beach Jaime works at and a bodyguard at the Prince's bar, is indifferent about his sexuality. But he is not indifferent about the feelings and obsession he has for Jaime Prince. He knows that this obsession he has towards Jaime, is not something that he has ever felt before. But once he has a taste of Jaime, that obsession becomes an addiction that he must strive to have every day for the rest of his life;
"Yet he continued to be drawn to Jaime like a bee to the most beautiful flower in the garden, taking advantage of the nectar, the nourishment he got from being close to Jaime. He was like an addict who couldn't;t resist the pull of one more hit. One more hit..."

Jaime has to be careful about his feelings towards Marcus, as he does not want to be in yet another dilemma like he was before with his previous partner. Jaime's past is what makes him an appealing character making you crave his story and much more. Being hurt both physically and emotionally in the past, Jaime knows that dealing with someone who is confused about his sexuality is drawing up dangerous lines for him. But those feelings that he has been harboring for Marcus cannot be denied and cannot be pushed away. He knows that his love for Marcus is not something that can be played around. Jaime is willing to put his doubts to the side and give Marcus a chance. When hearts are broken and the truth prevails, Jaime and Marcus must learn that being without each other hurts more than hiding in secret;
"I was going to say you can keep my heart in a cage. But the truth is, I think it was in a cage before. Before I let myself love you," Jaime said, his throat working. "You turned the key and let it out. Now it feels... like it has so much more room to beat. Like it could keep growing forever because you're around to fill it up..."

As my very first MM romance, I can say that I am a true fan now. But, that does not give out the idea that I will be reading more MM romances. I am still very hesitant about it the sub-genre, not because of the sexuality topic, but because I have always been a fan of FM romances. I have nothing against the LGBT community, so I will take this new sub-genre to me with a grain of salt. Overall, I am blessed to have read this beauty and that Tessa has created a new story that will have you panting, sweating, and wagging your invisible and horny tail for more!

My friends that read mainly MF books really rate this Author and I'm always interested in trying a new Author and I've got to say this was pretty good.Ok,so the actual story isn't anything new....an openly gay man and one who's confused/conflicted about his sexuality is something that's ever present in the MM genre. For this to work (for me) ,the MC's have to be believable in their attraction and this was certainly the case here.

This is the second book in the series but reads very well as a standalone.( the first book is MF and Rory and Olive are introduced very well here). The series centres around the Prince brothers and this is Jamie's story.

Jamie is out and the last thing he wants is to get involved with a guy who won't admit his attraction to another man. He's been there and has the mental scars to prove it.But there's something about Marcus .......

I wasn't sure about Marcus in the beginning but the more I read the more he grew on me and by the end I really fell for him.

Not really insta lust as they've been skirting around each other for years but it is pretty quick when the L word is mentioned but it actually worked here and I think that's because these two guys had seriously HOT chemistry. And,let me say, this Author can write scorching hot sex scenes and DIRTY TALK-that was downright filthy at times.

My only real negative was the inner monologues that went on and on at times.Having said that I read this in a day and was always interested to get back to the story.I'm even considering reading Andrew's story when it comes out....and for me to look forward to a MF book is a rare thing these days.

Heat Stroke is book two in the Beach Kingdom series by Tessa Bailey. This is a MM romance and can definitely be read as a stand alone. I have not read either of the other two books and was fine. These two characters so completely stole my heart. And the ending made me swoon so much it’s a wonder I didn’t fall over. This is such a sweet book!

Jamie Prince is the middle brother of the three Prince brothers. He is twenty six years old and is openly gay. He is an economics teacher at one of the top college prep schools in the five boroughs. But in the summer, he worked at both family businesses with his brothers, life guard on Long Beach by day, and tending bar at their pub, Castle Gate, at night.

Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy is twenty four years old and on the outside seems the exact opposite of Jamie. He is a cross fit enthusiast and loves to flaunt his muscles. He works at both businesses with Jamie during the summer. He’s been saving every penny he can to start his own business. Marcus has never felt quite right in his own skin. His brother and the men he works out with at the gym expect him to pick up a different girl every night. But for some reason, it just doesn’t feel right. All that does feel right is being close to Jamie Prince.

“I have to stay away from Jamie. I can’t stay away from Jamie.”

After Jamie reveals his darkest secret to Marcus, he knows he should leave him alone. But he can’t. Being close to him is the only thing that makes his world feel right. And once they kiss, once they touch, he knows. Jamie is the only person he will ever want.

First, Marcus is so endearing. He’s clueless most of the time and he admits it freely. But he’s not clueless about Jamie. He watches him, he understands him. He loves him. This is a sexual awakening story but more than that, it’s just a wonderful love story. Once I hit 75%, I couldn’t stop reading. I had to see what happened next. And the ending was so swoony. I’m so glad I finally read this!

One thing is for sure: Tessa Bailey writes the kind of sex that I like to read.

I've read a number of Tessa Bailey's books at this point, and while they aren't all home runs, she consistently gets the sex scenes right. I believe that this book was her first M/M romance, and I can only hope that she pushes her sex scenes even further in subsequent efforts (what?? I like my books sexy!). I love when Tessa writes dirty talk, and I wanted even more bossiness and even MORE dominance in the bedroom. But even if I wished she had taken it a smidge further, Heat Stroke really pushed my buttons in all the right way, just as is.

However, the relationship building? I mean, what relationship building?

It felt like I jumped into the story halfway through. The characters had this history and connection that I didn't get to see get developed, and I missed that in the story. Maybe it's because I'm jumping into the story at book two, but I think it's more that Tessa left out the slower relationship development stuff and jumped right into the good stuff.

I'm someone who likes to see the whole relationship develop, and we didn't get that here. I missed that a great deal. But, even still, I found the characters to be endearing, and I love a good coming out story. Plus, a beefy guy who likes to bottom is pretty much icing on ANY cake (and yes, I'm aware that sounded very dirty).

An enjoyable read, but it felt like a beginner effort. I can't wait to read more of Tessa's M/M in the future (write more, STAT!!).

Someone give this woman an award! Heck, all the awards! Best chemistry, best tension build up, definitely best sex and dirty talk scenes and best three dimensional characters.

I don't usually read m/m. I tend to like m/m/f and m/f/m more. Every time I read m/m before I felt like something was missing at the end. Like fairy bread without the sprinkles.. Maybe I read the wrong m/m books because this one did not miss a single thing. It was delectable. Like a chocolate lava cake! Decadent, rich and sinful!

Tessa Bailey managed to write one of the dirtiest and sexiest books I've ever read but with so many layers into it. Yes, there was a lot of sex but there was also so much more. Jamie's past and what he went through, Marcus's feelings and realisation of who he is. Each struggling but trying to find their way to each other. I just wanted to hug them both so tight.

If you're thinking of dipping your toes for the first time in the m/m pool, I totally recommend this one. As I've said I don't often read m/m so I don't know how good this holds up with other stellar m/m books but I think you'll fall in love with Jaimie and Marcus, just as I did.

Christ, he loved when Jamie ordered him around...

I will never, and I mean ever, get enough of Tessa Bailey's brand of sexy. The woman can write a romance with sizzling chemistry, witty banter, humor and her signature dirty talk like no one's business. And I'm currently on cloud 9 after finishing this book. I thought I loved Mouth to Mouth, but man oh man, I wasn't prepared for the level of obsession I was about to get with this one. GAH!

Heat Stroke brings us the straight laced Prince brother who moonlights as a lifeguard in his family's business when he's not teaching at a private school. Jamie is reserved and private, and the exact opposite of resident loud mouth, Marcus “Diesel” O’Shaughnessy. They are polar opposites in every possible way. Jamie is studious and smart, where Marcus struggled with everything school related. Jamie is reserved, where Marcus is as in your face as they get. Jamie is straight laced, where Marcus is the gym hopping muscle guy who is constantly underestimated.
Marcus O’Shaughnessy wasn’t scared of anything. He was six foot four and he could probably bench press a medium-sized gorilla.

But most importantly, Jamie is gay, and Marcus is...confused.

First of all, while this is a standalone, there are some things that carry over from the first book. The main thing is the dynamic between the brothers and the events that led to his younger brother's arrest and what inevitably changed everything for Jamie. The relationship between Jamie and Marcus all happens on the pages of this book. What I'm saying is, I highly recommend you read the first book for a truly enjoyable experience.

As for this book? I loved it, y'all. I loved that Marcus was essentially a big ole' sweetheart that just needs someone to believe in him. And I loved that straight laced Jamie is the exact opposite in the bedroom. The man is BOSSY. Raaarrrrrr!

But beyond the obvious sexiness of the book, I adored Marcus and Jamie's road to HEA. I loved watching Marcus come to understand his feelings for Jamie and what it means. I loved watching him come to terms with who he is and I loved the way he handles it all. But most of all, I loved seeing just how much this mountain of a man cares for Jamie. He's an adorably bumbling goof at times, but he also has a heard of gold. And while he may be a loud mouth, he's not all talk. Marcus was easily one of my favorite parts of this book. I couldn't get enough of him.

I devoured this book in one delicious sitting and couldn't put it down for even a second. I'm in love with the Prince brothers, and I'm already itching to get my hands on Andrew's story.

Heat Stroke was everything I've come to expect from the queen of dirty talk, and so much more. It was emotional, humorous, and totally and completely addicting. I absolutely adored it!

1 million stars!!! Tessa Bailey is a favorite of mine, but she blew it out of the water with her second M/M. Marcus and Jamie were everything! Marcus was freaking adorable in his confusion. Jamie just about broke my heart because he was so conflicted. The aching and yearning they have for each other is front and center in the story. There is so much heart and humor and feeling in this book, the characters practically leap off the page. And FYI...Tessa Bailey can write a sex scene like no other. I had heat stroke after reading this book!

Heat Stroke is the second book in the Beach Kingdom series. The good news is that I haven’t read the first book (Mouth to Mouth) and didn’t need to, to thoroughly enjoy this.

Jamie Prince and Marcus O’Shaughnessy are unlikely friends who work together as lifeguards and at the family bar. Even though these two have very little in common they seem to spend an awful lot of time together. Marcus is well aware of the fact that Jamie is gay and that he is straight, so why the fascination?

Jamie and Marcus are some of the greatest characters I have read. Where Jamie is laid back and comfortable in his own skin, you have Marcus, the stereotypical gym junkie who constantly surprises you with his loyalty and devotion while coming to terms with his newfound sexuality. He was completely adorable. Once they both gave into their feelings they were combustible....

“I wish…I could stay. I wish so many things. But mostly I just wish for you.”

It’s rare that I read a book three times in the span of as many days, entirely incapable of walking away from the characters and the world the author has so splendidly woven for us, but NOT reading this book over and over again was not even an option for me. Set against the vibrant, summer backdrop of Long Beach’s iconic seascape, this story tugs at the heartstrings in all the right ways, making us laugh, swoon, and pant all the way through, and it’s the kind of head-over-heels romance I so ardently long to believe in. Tessa Bailey’s talent for creating a tender, erotic love story with real depth is on display as ever, and I remain enraptured by every one of her heart-stealing words.

The first book I read by Tessa Bailey I loved to pieces. The second I dnf’d after only a few chapters. This one was a close call to the latter as well. There was a lot of cringing on my end and I didn’t really like the author’s way of writing/storytelling nor did I particularly fell in love with the mcs or their love story. Their dynamic was weird as well. If it wasn’t for Kale Williams narrating half of the book I wouldn’t have made it.

I enjoyed listening to him as Marcus so so much. Adorable! I hadn’t listened to anything from Kas Vadim up until now and he generally did a good enough job narrating Jamie, too. Nice voice. But hell what did the guy do to Marcus’ character?? He let him sound like a dumb fuck. Pity, really, because he wasn’t. I’m super glad Kale Williams had more respect for the characters.

“You said your arms are too tired to pick up the pieces of what I broke? That’s fine. Because I’m jacked as shit, Jamie. I’ll carry us until you’re ready.”

Gawd, I loved this. I really don’t need any more grovelling than this! 🫠 what came next tho, was so OTT my jaw dropped. Didn’t see that one coming. AT ALL!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 omg!

Overall this book sure had it’s moment but no recommendation from me.

HOT DAMNNNNN!!! There’s ‘hot’ and then there is ‘Tessa Bailey HOT’, aka scorching, relief needed level of steaminess! Add to that already ‘one click quality’, deeply raw emotions that make your heart hurt and soar along with the characters, an insanely addictive banter and one of the most likable characters I’ve have EVER read, and you have the masterpiece, ‘one click must’ HEAT STROKE! Yep, Jamie and Marcus’ story deserves ALL the stars, and became one of my all time fav reads: TOP FAV!!!

Ms. Bailey was already my queen of dirty talkers, therefore an auto read for me, but this book… WOW, just wow! Even though not being an avid MM reader, I’ve been counting down the days for this book, first because I’ve been dying for these two’s story since the first book of the series, and second because I can not resist TB’s brilliant writing. Already imagining liking even before actually starting, I did not expect this level of LOVE tale, seriously SOULMATE deep – yes, not unusual with Ms. Bailey, but for me, wow, this was taking MM to a whole new level, because I truly felt it was not about sexual gender, but soul coupling! – , that’s how it felt with Jamie and Marcus’ love.

Such different souls and characters, but so, so well match, I could not believe, they both tried to resist, but this level of connection couldn’t be ignored. Both Jamie and Marcus were incredible characters, and of course I adored seeing again other Prince brothers and their match, but Marcus… He stole the show for me. The rawness of his feelings, the conflict of his emotions, the struggle both emotional and physical were so stellarly accounted and exposed, I. FELT. EVERYTHING!!! And loved every word of it!

I will not say much more, because I truly believe this beautiful and unique love story should be experienced to the fullest and without much prior unveiling, because the surprise of the events and reactions is half the experience. Heat Stroke, will on doubt leave you hot and bothered – it is a Tessa Bailey’s, after all, lol, so unparalleled hotness -, emotionally touched and on cloud nine with Jamie and Marcus HEA after their bumpy journey. They so deserved this HEA, and the conclusion was spot on! Ms. Bailey outdid herself again, so now I am even more anxious and psyched to have Andrew and Jiya’s story!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

My heart doesn’t care if he’s a man or a woman, he’s just Jamie.”

“I was going to say you can keep my heart in a cage. But the truth is, I think it was in a cage before. Before I let myself love you,” Jamie said, his throat working. “You turned the key and let it out. Now it feels…like it has so much more room to beat. Like it could keep growing forever because you’re around to fill it up.”

3.5 Sweet and steamy M/M romance.

Jamie and Marcus are friends... well kind of. Marcus has these feelings for Jamie that he doesn’t full understand, and Jamie just finds Marcus ANNOYING even though he recognizes what Marcus is going through. Realizing he is gay. I think this romance is sweet, but it also has a raw truth behind it that’s surrounded by sticky sweet romance, so it kind of hides it. I like that this book has a bit of real emotion to it when it comes to coming out.

So I say if you’re looking for an M/M romance with a lot of heart, some emotional situations, but still has heat and sticky sweet romance, then you will enjoy Heat Stroke.

I’d also like to clarify that I do not read M/M very often. So maybe my review isn’t as valid to compare it to other M/M’s but in the romance genre as a whole.

***3 Stars***

First off, let me start this review by saying that I didn't read the first book in this series. And I think that's where this book and I started off on the wrong foot because right from the beginning this felt like I was walking into a story already in progress. There was already a history and dynamic between Jamie and Marcus that, I believe, was probably established in the first book.

Jamie and Marcus have been friends for three years, ever since they started working summers together lifeguarding....but I didn't get any of that history. Not how they met, how their friendship evolved, nothing. And that's one of the reasons why I didn't understand how right off the bat Jamie knew that Marcus was confused about his sexuality??

Once I accepted the fact that these things were my fault for probably not reading the first book, I took the story for what it was and began to enjoy the ride.

And let me tell you, the pining got me in the feels. My heart broke for Marcus. He was nuts about Jamie, and desperately wished for them to be together. And when he finally gets his wish, he has to hide their relationship. Something that both breaks his heart that he doesn't have the strength to be open about his sexuality, but more so because he sees how much it hurts Jamie.

Jamie doesn't want to be in this position again. A past mistake not only cost his brother his freedom and put him in jail, but almost got Jamie killed. A secret is not something that he ever wants to be again. But he can't turn away from Marcus. Originally he thinks that he can just be a mentor and guide for Marcus while he figures out his feelings, but that's the thing about feelings...they don't care what you want. The pull and attraction between these two can't be denied.

Because it was Marcus and they were exploring something honest and when they were alone, the world was narrowed down to just the two of them. And the two of them together was everything right.

As of course is expected, Ms. Tessa Bailey knows how to bring the heat. Jamie may have been a preppy schoolteacher but he was a bossy dirty talker behind closed doors. These two had chemistry that smoked up my kindle and fogged up my glasses!

But outside of that...I'm not sure if I 100% bought Marcus and Jamie together. I wanted more of them bonding outside of the bedroom. There was a lot of internal dialogue about the central conflict which is Marcus's sexuality and his unwillingness to come out and Jamie compromising his feelings in relation to his past experience and not comparing Marcus (who intends to come out but asks for time) to that horrific event.

So many aspects of this story felt underdeveloped. Why did Marcus think everyone thought him dumb? Did Marcus and Jamie hang out before this book started? Did they only see each other during the summers? Why was Marcus so into working out and his health? Did he always want to have a business? Has Jamie had past relationships? What's the deal with his father? Was the bar his brothers now own originally his? Did he leave them with debt and trouble? This whole book is based so much on that central conflict that all the other things that make up these characters fell away.

And that ending and epilogue? Whooo boy is that too much. Instead of giving me the warm and fuzzy feels, it had me rolling my eyes. Marcus came out three seconds ago, and from the looks of it this is Jamie's first real relationship, why is there a proposal? Why are they getting married a week later?

Overall, while I don't think there was enough in this story for me to sink my teeth into, I did enjoy the ride (for the most part). I'll always be a fan of characters overcoming their fears and finding love.

And I'll finish this off by saying that Tessa Bailey has me BEYOND salivating for Andrew and Jiya's story!! There's so much pining going on here!! My kryptonite! And it's gonna be a friends to lovers....which HELLO!!! That's so my jam!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that their story will be much meatier because based on what I saw here....the 5 star potential is HUGE!

This was a fun read. I really liked Jamie and Marcus together and they had great chemistry.

I also felt this was pretty to easy to follow even though there was a first book in this series, so this can be read as a standalone, in my opinion.

Jamie is 26, Marcus is 24 and for the past three years they've been working summers as a lifeguard and Jamie as a bartender at the bar he and his brother's inherited from their father, and Marcus as a bouncer at the door.

Marcus isn't the brightest person, but he isn't a dumb person and he is actually an incredibly kind, gentle and respectful person. I really liked how the author portrayed Marcus, who does some dumb things, yes, but she shows that doesn't make him a dumb person. I felt he was more realistically portrayed than others who aren't always so smart. I feel in fiction sometimes a "dumb" person just tends to be dumb all time with no social awareness and all they are is their lack of average or above average intelligence. That wasn't the case with Marcus, who honestly just didn't seem book smart and was very scatter brained. That isn't a dumb person to me.

Marcus has just grown up in a hyper masculine home and been around guys who are all about how straight they are. But Marcus isn't straight, and he's pretty fixated on Jamie, who tries to resist him because of past events in his life, but can't for long.

These two were really great together and while the drama near the end was a little manufactured, it all worked out, although I thought when they got together for good, it was super rushed.

But other than those things, I really enjoyed this, and the sex scenes were very well written, very passionate and loving as well. If you're gonna include sex scenes, make them interesting, is all I gotta say - and this book did that.

Definitely recommend if you're looking for a fun, sexy read with two cute MC's that just work so well together.

This is a hard book to rate because I did enjoy pieces of it but struggled with parts of it. So I’m leaving the rating part blank for now.

What worked for me?

-Marcus was one of my favorite kind of romance men. A big hunk who was a total softie. I love when that happens.
-I loved how protective he was of Jamie.
-Speaking of protective, I also loved Jamie’s brothers.

What didn’t work for me?
-I started feeling like this was a m/f romance. I think this is the author’s first time writing m/m and so I’m trying not to be harsh, but it just didn’t click for me all the way. It’s hard to explain. Still, I’m totally open to seeing what she can do in the future and will possibly check out one of her m/f books. Maybe even the other in this series with Jamie’s brother. I’m hoping the other brother gets a book too.
-Some grammar and spelling issues were distracting.
-Things veered towards the cheesy by the end.
-Some of the 🔥 scenes felt awkward.

[I got frustrated by one of the latest books by Ms. Bailey, so I went and reread this one again.]

Verdict? Yepp, still awesome.

The characters were fun and real, their chemistry was palpable, the emotions heartfelt. Plus I have a soft spot for coming-out stories, so this one probably just hit where I needed it.

He was loud, rude, unpolished and didn't know Kerouac from karaoke. And yet, Jamie couldn't help but wonder if Marcus would pay as much attention to him in the bed as he did out of bed.
[...]
He smelled like bad decisions that would feel really fucking good.

Marcus and Jamie were so different, one would never suspect they could fit. Yet Ms. Bailey wrote a beautiful story of how two opposites could not only attract, but explode together in a good way.

I loved it.

5 'Love in a cage' Stars!

I just got my first taste of Tessa Bailey MM romance goodness and I want moooooore! I love me some man on man action and I knew queen Tessa would not disappoint me. The woman definitely did a fantastic job with Heat Stroke, the second book of her Beach Kingdom series. I freaking devoured this book in one sitting because everything in it just so freaking amazing.

He was like an addict who couldn’t resist the pull of one more hit. One more hit.

Gah, these two men together are to die for. This was funny, entertaining, sexy AF and so beautifully emotional. I loved Jamie and Marcus together. They are complete opposites but they just work so well as a couple. I love their personalities, Jamie is out, ready for a relationship, a great brother and oh-so-bossy and Marcus is confused, discovering his sexuality, protective and so loving with Jamie. I loved how this relationship was developed and seeing these two fall in love.

“Give me the first, last and only chance you ever give another person to be your everything.”

Absolutely adored every single word of Heat Stroke. Again, not surprised because Tessa Bailey is my queen and she kills it every single time. I really liked the start of this series but this book has just become my favorite. I can't get over how much I loved these two men together! So glad they found their HEA (which was freaking adorable, btw!). I can't wait to read the final story about Andrew and Jiya! Tessa is such a tease and these two sound so good together. Guys if you haven't checked this series yet, please do. You have to meet Jamie and Marcus and the whole crew!

This book is always great!! Y’all know I love a case of he loves me, he loves me not !! This trope of friends to lovers in a MM fashion where one character is struggling to identify his sexuality.. ooh this is my bread and butter !! Like legit slice it, toast it and slater that shit on!!!

If someone is going to be on the DL I’ll be there !!! Lol but on another note this is Tessa and her talents know no bounds and she writes slow burn like it’s nobodies business !! I love, love this book and I’ll probably read it again on the beach this summer 😘🥰🙌🏽😅!! Happy reading everyone 😘!

Oh my Gooooddd, Marcus is EVERYTHING !!! I just wanted to hold him and pet him . Such a sweet Mc and so endearing !! I loved this book. I mean, it’s not a work of art or anything ( that eye-rolling proposal came out of nowhere, for example ) but it’s lovely (and HOT) and so so enjoyable.

“I was going to say you can keep my heart in a cage. But the truth is, I think it was in a cage before. Before I let myself love you...”

I absolutely adored this book, y’all! This super fun, fast-paced MM romance is not to be missed. Who doesn’t want to read about lifeguards, am I right? Marcus and Jamie had so much heat and passion and fantastic banter, Heat Stroke got me out of a severe book funk. I cannot recommend this one enough!

Say what you want about this genre…whether you enjoy it, hate it, are obsessed with it, could take it or leave it…this book right here NEEDED to be written. I needed it to be written and I’m so glad Tessa Bailey is the master behind these beautiful words. Marcus and Jamie are my absolute favorite couple of Tessa Bailey’s and my favorite MM couple to date from anyone…ever. The vulnerabilities behind Marcus’ tough guy routine made my heart skip a beat. The hesitancy behind Jamie’s urge to run in the opposite direction of Marcus, gave me hope. The yearning, the insane sexual and emotional chemistry, the longing, the hunger to be something more…well, that completely broke my heart. I was pretty much an emotional wreck throughout this entire story, but in the most beautiful way. I legit, had to put the book down and walk away for a couple of minutes because I was so scared of what was going to happen next…fear, trepidation, sadness, heartache…it was all there, even knowing that Ms. Bailey was going to give us a happily ever after we will never forget. I’ve fallen in love with every word, every page, ever chapter. Marcus and Jamie will forever own a piece of my heart. Thank you, Tessa Bailey, for bringing us so much hope at a time where we all could use some.

2.5 stars

The best thing about this book was Marcus, one of the MCs. He was an adorable mix of stunningly good looks, physical clumsiness, low self-esteem from years of being told he was stupid, but was nothing but kind, caring and so ready to love someone.

That someone would be Jamie Prince, apparently smart, well educated and with a good career. I don't think his character were as well crafted as Marcus', since not much of his supposedly superior intellect was reflected in his internal or external dialogue. Instead the characters' inner voices sounded a bit too similar, in my opinion.

My main disappointment was in the general style of the story, aiming to be sassy but only felt superficial, at least to me. The style reminded me of M/F romance novels, and all the reasons why I no longer read those. There was also a lot of time spent inside each MCs mind, where the constant analysis of every minor detail the other person might be doing/thinking/feeling made the story drag and sometimes felt repetitious.

The take on the coming out theme felt slightly dated compared to other similar romance books, like it was written back in 2013-2014 and not as recent as 2019. On the plus side were a couple of hot, well written smexy scenes and good UST between the guys, but those alone wasn't enough to carry the story.

There were a handful of side characters from the other books in the series, mainly the brothers of Jamie Prince, but this book worked well as a standalone regardless. My rating is a mix of 4 star elements and eye-roll inducing sections that didn't work for me, but I can see why others might like it more than I did.
