Miss Marple meets Oscar Wilde in this new series of cosy mysteries set in the picturesque Cotswolds village of Bunburry.
In "Sweet Revenge", the seventh Bunburry book, Alfie is back in London, trying to pick up his old life there. But even a wild social whirl with his best friend Oscar can't disguise the fact that he misses Bunburry. And then a cry for help reaches him - Liz and Marge are in trouble, and Alfie races back. But as he and Police Constable Emma Hollis join forces to clear the ladies' names, he has to confront a growing suspicion. Has Liz made a mistake while making her celebrated fudge, or have the ladies been up to something more sinister?

Helena Marchmont’s Bunburry series is a bit of a crapshoot: Some of the novellas are cleverly crafted, humorous cozies (like Murder in the Mousetrap); some, like Drop Dead, Gorgeous, are nearly unreadable. But readers will find themselves in good luck with Sweet Revenge, the seventh in the series.
Alfie McAllister, 40-something grieving widow and retired tech entrepreneur, usually teams up with two elderly friends, Marge Redwood and Liz Hopkins; however, in Sweet Revenge Alfie partners with pretty police Constable Emma Hollis, Liz’s great-niece. The two make a wonderful team, and I hope that they will team up again. Reader, whatever you do, be sure to have the next in the series, Sheep Secrets, as Sweet Revenge ends on a very intriguing cliffhanger.
Was hat mir gefallen?
The books in this series are short so I prefer to listen to them fairly close together to keep the flow of the characters and the ongoing elements of the stories such as his relationships with various inhabitants of Bunburry and the backstory of his parentage and upbringing. So I've been waiting for the next batch to appear on Audible which they now have and I can look forward to the next two installments.
Nathaniel Parker's narration is perfect and really complements the style of the books.
Both read and listened to. This audiobook does not divide the 3 novellas into books, nor does it label the chapters. Consequently, it is really hard to go back and forth between formats. Stick with one or the other.

Another charming chapter in the Bunburry books. Just one small suggestion. The rules for breaking words apart are quite simply. It breaks the flow of the story to have to stop and put words back together to figure o ut what the author is trying to say. Otherwise a perfectly lovely time in Bunburry.
Alfie has spent three months in London after Betty left England at the end of the previous book. He's called back to Bunburry by a call from Liz about a problem with the fudge and a recent wedding. The guests had diarrhea and it ruined the festivities, and Liz and Marge are afraid that the fudge will be blamed as it was served right after the ceremony. Alfie and Emma develop a plan and start meeting with the principles at the wedding, and it is long before the culprit is found.
Bunburry fits the bill for relaxing holiday reading. Alfie is in London and miserable after the disastrous movie wrap party in book 6 and called back to Bunburry to help Liz and Marge. Their famous Bunburry fudge is part of an ongoing investigation. The guests of a society wedding became ill during the reception and of course the famous fudge was part of the glamorous champagne tower. Liz and Marge risk losing the fudge business if the new “Bunburry Parallel” (formerly “Bunburry Triangle”) sleuthing group aren’t able to clear their name.
These humorous little mysteries keep getting better and better--a fine ensemble of characters, well plotted mysteries, good timing, and a terrific narration by Nathaniel Parker. In this episode a wedding reception is ruined when someone laces something with laxative, and Alfie's friends Marge and Liz are suspected of making a bad batch of fudge. One of the elderly guests is in hospital in very serious condition. So is it a prank, or a murder attempt? The investigation is interesting and when the culprit is discovered, Marge and Liz--plus their fudge business--are off the hook.
My online book group decided to reread a well written but upsetting historical novel involving the Black Plague. As I finished the historical novel I knew I needed something fun, light hearted and engaging as an antidote. Luckily for me I’m behind on the antics of Alfie and his friends
Lukijana Nathaniel Parker.
I love Helena Marchmont's Bunburry books. They are funny, interesting, and mysterious. I have the first six I Audible, and will purchase the seventh when it appears on Audible. I may have to purchase all seven books from Amazon books.
I love the Characters and their underlying stories. Easy to read and enjoyable. Would definitely recommend this book and Helen Marchmont. Can't wait for the next instalment of Archie and the Bunbury Triangle
The Burnburry series is suitable for all ages of mystery lovers. They are a true "cozy" mystery, full of very human, reoccurring characters you'll love. When I've finished one, I'm already looking for the next release date!
These short novella length cozies are very satisfying. Nicely fleshed out characters, interesting plots, and a fun British village setting. Better to start at the beginning of the series and read through to get all the background.
Love the series. Love the characters and the dialogue pace is genius. I gobble them up as soon as they are released. It’s not War and Peace and it’s not meant to be. It’s a cozy mystery series that is well written with compelling characters. I can’t ask for more than that.
Alfie is on the trail of the bad guys or so he thinks, then things get really interesting. Love the eccentric ladies and the upstart policewoman that keep Alfie on his toes. Please have Liz's voice speak up; it's so soft, it's hard to hear or follow at times.
There was nothing offensive in this Cotswolds mystery(#7 in the series) . This is a novella but has enough depth to keep you interested. Don't expect any great surprises - it's just a gentle murder! 😂
