I was born in the UK grew up in Switzerland, and moved to Canada in 2010. Unsurprisingly I love chocolate, mountains and cheese, and books, of course.
My first novel, TIME AFTER TIME, a light-hearted romantic read, published in 2016, after which I moved to the dark side.
My internationally bestselling thrillers include: THE NEIGHBORS (2018), HER SECRET SON (2019), SISTER DEAR (2020), YOU WILL REMEMBER ME (2021), NEVER COMING HOME (2022) and THE REVENGE LIST (2023).
I've returned to my romantic comedy roots with THE CHRISTMAS WAGER, written under the pseudonym Holly Cassidy (2023).
My latest thriller, ONLY ONE SURVIVES, published in July 2024. My second Holly Cassidy holiday rom-com, THE CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN, releases in October 2024.
A man wakes up on a beach in Maryland in the early morning hours, only wearing swimming trunks. He has a bloody gash on his head, and has no idea who he is or where he’s from.
Meanwhile, a woman named Lily is distraught after her boyfriend of 18 months, Jack, goes missing after taking a swim at the beach right before a storm rolls in. Making matters worse, after she notifies the police, she finds out that JACK SMITH might not be his real name. What was he hiding?
Maya is relieved when her stepbrother, Asher, returns to Maine after disappearing two years prior. He has amnesia and doesn’t remember her or anyone else. Slices of memory come back in bits and pieces, but will he be better off not remembering the previous events in his life?
I think it’s safe to assume you can see how these threads may connect. If not, I won’t go into any more detail.
You Will Remember Me is a suspenseful thriller that is always interesting, but fairly predictable. I mostly knew exactly where it was heading (KEYWORD: MOSTLY), but the execution of the plot was intriguing, and I couldn’t get through the pages fast enough. Filled with characters I enjoyed and characters I loved to hate (and who caused a rise in my anxiety), I just had to know what happened before the amnesia.
As for the keyword above, there is a wicked moment that I did NOT expect. Legitimately surprising, I bumped this from 3/3.5 to 4 stars. Bravo to author Hannah Mary McKinnon for going there and tying up most, if not all, possible loose ends.
Thank you to MIRA for sending me a widget of the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This book will be published on: 5/25/21.
This is wild, engaging, fast pacing, riveting, disturbing ride!
It seems like 3.5 starred reading: I have to gather my honest opinions to decide between 3 and 4 stars!
Pros: The book started fast with an intriguing but not so original man from suffering amnesia who has dark past, hiding secrets about himself plot line!
After the impressive opening, the progression of the story was quite moving, action packed. Lily waits for her boyfriend bring breakfast from their favorite pancake place. When he doesn’t show up, she realizes something must be wrong! He isn’t at his home and his car is found abandoned at the beachside. He’s missing. Is he dead? But when the police involves in his case, they find out his ID is fake. And this is not the only thing he lied to her. At the meantime Jack finds himself passed out at the deserted beach of Maryland. He remembers a phone number which helps him reach out his step sister who tells him she didn’t hear from him for two years and his name is Asher. So far I was really hooked!
Tension building was seriously captivating, exciting, heart pounding. You never want to put it down the book, flipping pages nonstop, trying to learn how this madness will wrap up!
Conclusion of the story was madly satisfying and smart!
Cons: The story narrated by three POVs : amnesiac man/ Asher who suffers from anger management problems, Lily seems like obsessive lover of Asher but she thinks his name is Jack and stepsister Maya who is way too much intense, neurotic and obsessed with her stepbrother.
I honestly hated all of the characters! All of them keep terrible secrets. Both women are irritatingly obsessed with Asher who seems like biggest douchebag. It was impossible to feel sorry for any of them. That’s why I loved the conclusion so much!
The twists are so foreseeable from miles away. The characters give themselves away! Only one thing about Lily at the end was not predictable! It was quiet surprising!
The mystery behind the amnesia of Asher was also not a big mystery. It was also pretty obvious from the beginning.
But at the end I’m still rounding up 3.5 stars to 4 because I enjoy story telling skills of the author and some parts of the book was pretty wild, moving. The pacing kept my attention intact. It’s quick entertaining ride, such a great popcorn reading!
Looking forward to read more works of the author!
Special thanks to Netgalley and HARLEQUIN/ MIRA for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
A man wakes up on a beach with no memories. He has no idea who he is or where he came from...... Lily's boyfriend Jack went for a swim and never returned..... Maya's brother Ash has been missing for two years..... Both women claim the mystery man is who they've been searching for while he tries to piece together his past.
I had a bit of a rocky road with this book. At page 20 I decided to DNF it. The character's behaviours were unrealistic and I found the dialogue kinda corny. I surprised myself though because I kept reading. At around page 50 I AGAIN decided to abandon it. But then I thought - why don't I just CHILL OUT and appreciate it for the escapism that it is and stop over thinking it. Plus I was curious enough by that point to see how it would all play out. Another plus was that I'd heard it had a big twist at the end that I didn't want to miss. So chill out I DID and I had fun reading the rest of it! I may not be willing to round my rating up to a 4 but I enjoyed the heck outta these despicable characters and the ending didn't disappoint! What an unexpected twist! 3.5 ⭐
You Will Remember Me is a deviously twisted tale of obsession and small town secrets. That sounds great, right!?
A man waking up on a beach in Maryland has no memory of his past, or even his name. All he is left with are foggy recollections that lead him to the state of Maine and luckily, directly to people who recognize him.
They say his name is Asher and he has been missing for years. He is quickly reunited with his long-lost sister, Maya, who takes him in and agrees to care for him during his recuperation.
When Lily Reid's boyfriend, Jack, goes missing after an evening swim at a beach in their Maryland town, everyone suspects that he has drowned.
Lily refuses to give up on him, so she begins an investigation of her own. It leads her to a small town in Maine.
There she spots Jack on the street. Upon approaching him, he has no memory of her. Making matters worse, he and his sister, insist that his name is actually, Asher.
Lily is so confused. Why would Jack have given her a false name? It is clear to all, Ash is suffering from amnesia due to a head injury and Lily decides to stick around for a bit to interact with him more. She's still in love with him.
Following three perspectives, Ash, Lily and Maya's, this story is a wild ride. It's fast-paced and engaging the entire way through.
Personally, I enjoy an amnesia story. I also love obsession tropes and long-buried secrets. This book has all of those things, so was a great recipe for me.
A few of the elements involved in the story were a bit far-fetched and a tad overly convenient, but honestly, it's still a great time. It's not a story that's asking you to take it too seriously.
I think if you go into this looking for fun twists, turns and devious actors, you're in for heck of a fun experience.
Hannah Mary McKinnon has a way with over-the-top drama. It's her style and I'm here for it. It'll keep me coming back, that's for sure!
Thank you so much to publisher, MIRA, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I truly appreciate it.
Hannah Mary McKinnon just gets better and better, and You Will Remember Me is notably her best mystery thriller yet! That creepy, ominous cover suits perfectly!
A man wakes up on a beach with a cut on his head not knowing who he is or why he’s there.
Lily’s boyfriend, Jack, goes missing one night. She uncovers that he’s been lying to her all along, and he’s not who he says he is.
Maya’s stepbrother, Asher, disappeared years ago, but now he’s returned with significant memory problems.
All of these stories connect, but probably not in the way you expect. Twists and turns abound, and especially one BIG twist was completely unexpected. There are likable AND unlikable characters you will love to hate. You Will Remember Me is a dark wild tale that wraps up in a deeply satisfying finale! Well-done, Hannah Mary McKinnon!
Holy Shooty Balls! Malevolent, wicked, and a gripping page-turner!
YOU WILL REMEMBER ME by HANNAH MARY McKINNON is a dark, twisted, cleverly layered, highly entertaining, and crafty slow-burn psychological thriller that had me glued to those pages right to the very end. The story progresses at a steady pace and the tension subtly increases throughout. We are pretty much privy to what is actually going on here, (or we think we are at least) and definitely get a good glimpse into what makes each of these characters tick. I was immediately sucked in and was intrigued in this immersive read.
HANNAH MARY McKINNON delivers a sinister, suspenseful, and absorbing read here that had me immediately questioning almost everything that was going on. Nothing and no one is as it seems. I didn’t know who I was to trust but had me rooting for each of them in some way whether that be in a positive or negative way. I couldn’t read the book fast enough to see how this was all going to play out in the end. And oh boy did it ever play out in the end in the most maddening satisfactory and smart way ever!
I absolutely love it when an author holds you captive with great writing and guides you through all the layers of secrets and deceits right to the very end, and then throws in an unexpected explosive ending to boot. Fabulous!!! This book was happily placed into my favourite 2021 reading shelf!
This was a gifted copy that I received from HANNAH MARY McKINNON to go with her special exclusive book sleeve that was offered in our Reading in the Country Etsy Shop. Thank you so much again Hannah Mary for collaborating with us. Your book sleeve matched this book perfectly!
I have been a huge fan of Hannah Mary McKinnon since reading The Neighbors.
You Will Remember Me is another dark, twisty, and addicting read.
There is nothing more satisfying then having a book throw you for a loop with all those twists and turns! Hannah is a master storyteller with those twists that make your head spin!!
That ending was what made this book! Such a dark and explosive ending!! Yeeeeehawww 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I don’t want to tell you too much to spoil it. So I definitely recommend picking this one up yourself.
Thank you to the publisher and the author for my copy.
A few years ago, a man from Toronto vanished from a ski hill in Lake Placid while there on vacation and showed up six days later in Sacramento. He had amnesia and couldn’t remember much, including the cross-country trip he’d made as he’d hitchhiked across the US. Everything worked out for the man in the end and he found his way home, but it made me wonder—what could have gone wrong? That was the genesis for YOU WILL REMEMBER ME. A while later I had a vivid image in my head—a man waking up on a deserted beach without any recollection of who he was, or what he was doing there. I kept coming back to his story, how he’d arrived on that beach, what he’d do, and how much danger he was in. As I noodled the plot around, I wondered what might happen if he found his way home but had no idea he’d actually left the town years before, and unknowingly walked back into the dragon’s den. That was it. I needed to know what happened next, and if he’d survive.
This was a challenging book to write in many ways. Having multiple point-of-view characters (there are three) is always more complex than having one protagonist as you have to develop the character more quickly. I’d also completely underestimated writing a point-of-view character with amnesia. You can’t give them any backstory or memories, nor can you have scene after scene of somebody telling them about their past. YOU WILL REMEMBER ME was a tricky book to write, but it stretched me as an author.
Secrets, lies, amnesia and warped relationships = a page turner! Well, ok then Hannah Mary McKinnon! Talk about a satisfying and suspenseful thriller with a twisted ending that I totally approve of! The premise is one that always draws me in, let me set the scene for you - a man wakes up on a beach not knowing who he is or where he is. Total amnesia! I mean come on - you know that’s a recipe for upcoming disaster and I was here for it! Add in one girlfriend with a few skeletons in her own closet, a stepsister that has some, let’s call them boundary issues, and a past that seems to include not one but two dead ex-girlfriends and I was wondering why he’d even want his memory back because none of it looked good.
I binged this audio quickly because I had to know where it was all headed. I suspected where it was all going but this is one of those books where knowing who the bad guy is feels fitting because it’s not about the “who”, it’s more about the “why”. I love a good unhinged psychopath and McKinnon delivers here - especially with that ending! I was thoroughly satisfied with how things played out - not sure what that says about me though. 🤷🏻♀️
YOU WILL REMEMBER ME by Hannah Mary McKinnon is a dark and twisted psychological suspense/thriller that kept me turning the pages well into the night. Having read Sister Dear I knew I was in for an exciting read, but this book managed to exceed those expectations.
A man wakes up freezing on a beach in Maryland only wearing swim trunks with no memory. The only thing he does remember is a phone number in Maine which leads him to his hometown and more questions than answers.
Lily Reid is frantic when her boyfriend, Jack goes missing. His truck is found on the beach, but there is no body.
Maya Scott has been trying to find her stepbrother, Asher who has been missing for two years. He disappeared without a trace, but he is now back with no memories. Maya is determined to keep Ash and their mutual secrets at home.
WOW! Each time I would believe I have everything figured out, Ms. McKinnon would reveal another twist that would leave me shocked and wondering where else this plot could go and how much darker it would get. The three main characters kept me constantly on my toes as their secrets were revealed which left me on an emotional pendulum. This is a page turner that does not disappoint and I will definitely be thinking about these characters for quite some time.
I highly recommend this psychological suspense/thriller and this author!
Hannah Mary McKinnon’s You Will Remember Me is yet another unputdownable read from an author who gets better with each book. What begins with a case of amnesia twists with each new discovery as McKinnon slowly and methodically unravels the layers of secrets and deceit. A gripping, chilling thriller that held me captive until the shocking end.
A man wakes up on the beach without any memory of who he is or how he got there. While he tries to figure out his identity, his girlfriend Lily searches for the truth about what happened to him. She refuses to believe that he drowned and conducts her own search into his disappearance. When she finds out that he is not who he said he was and that he has a dark past, she must decide whether to pursue the relationship. When Maya claims that Lily’s boyfriend, Jack, is actually her brother, the two women face off in a fight for the love of the same man.
This book is unfortunately not a stand out among other thrillers that deal with memory loss. The reader is able to predict where the story is headed the entire way to the end. The only question that lingers is whether or not the villain will get away with committing the crimes. That being said, it just didn’t wow me in any kind of way. I was also unable to become invested in any of the characters and found myself not really caring what happened to them. I really enjoyed McKinnon’s The Neighbors and Sister Dear, and highly recommend them to those who are intrigued by her writing.
Thank you to NetGalley and MIRA publishing for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another winner from Hannah Mary McKinnon. Her books are always so clever, twisty and shocking and I can't get enough of them. Once I started it I found it hard to put down, with each chapter leaving more questions that I needed answers on. It is a fun, escapist read and a great thriller.
We have the 3 main characters - Jack, Lily and Maya. Their stories will all come together, but how? You might think you know and have it all worked out until you don't.
Jack and Lily are happy and living in Maryland. Until the night Jack disappears. This is when Lily discovers that he is not the man she thought he was and she wants answers. Maya is so happy to have her step brother home, even if he has no memory. And the man on the beach, waking up and not knowing who he is. Amnesia stories can be hit or miss for me and this one worked really well. You won't know who can be trusted. An absolutely shocking ending you will not see coming.
Well, this was definitely my least favorite of McKinnon's novels, unfortunately (The Neighbors is still my favorite!). Setting the bar high with a debut can often times be an author's downfall, and I've noticed this especially with thriller authors lately, sadly. This will probably get pretty good reviews to those just discovering McKinnon, but I've been with her since DAY ONE, so I know what she's capable of. This one just fell flat for me. I know I have high expectations, so this may be completely on me, but regardless, I still can't help feeling unsatisfied! No big twists or anything in this one, this was a pretty straightforward tale (as straightforward as thrillers can be) about a sociopath obsessed with someone. I think if the sociopath had been unknown throughout the novel, this might have gone over a tad better for me, but we pretty much know who it is from the first couple of chapters, so I'm scratching my head a bit here. And the whole reveal as to how our protagonist got injured, resulting in him washing up on shore with amnesia was completely underwhelming, for me. The backstory into the disappearance of two teenagers and what exactly happened to them was also fairly predictable.....grrr! This all being said, it's still a solid read, and I would recommend reading it, just go in knowing there aren't any real shockers here. I'm sensing a trend as far as endings go with this author (her last two books anyway), and wondering if this will continue? Interested to see what others think about this one! On to the next good '21 read!!
This is a decent psychological thriller if you're ok with not liking any of the characters.
The premise grabbed me from the beginning--man wakes up on a beach and has no idea who he is, he has complete amnesia. He is one of our narrators, real name Ash and name he has been going by is Jack. The second POV is from his girlfriend Lily, who realizes that he is missing and is frantic, calls the police, they all hit dead ends because he has disappeared into thin air. Ash/Jack remembers enough flashes of his past to connect with our third POV, his stepsister Maya. What happens from here are many outrageous things, some occasionally unbelievable and outright wild.
I pretty much figured out from the beginning where it was going, and I wasn't wrong. However the ending definitely elevated this beyond the realm of complete predictability, because I really did not see the ending coming. Thus, even though I didn't like any of the POV characters, I can recommend this book for those who like psychological suspense because even though you think you know what is going to happen you don't.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.
A man on a beach in Maryland wakes up wearing only swimming trunks. He's disoriented, bleeding from a gash in his head, and has zero clue who he is or where he's from.
Lily Reid is waiting on a delicious blueberry pancake breakfast date. Instead, her life is turned upside down with the discovery of her missing boyfriend.
Maya Scott, a woman living in Maine, is overjoyed at the return of her step brother who disappeared without a trace two years prior.
"Forget the truth. Remember the lies."
You Will Remember Me is a fast paced and entertaining read. I enjoyed the fact it was told from three different characters perspectives. Reading through the reviews I have to admit I am quite proud of myself for guessing the outcome! We can all admit there's always some validation that comes with that. Ha Ha! Even figuring it out, I still very much enjoyed this book and would recommend :)
Huge thank you to HarperCollins Canada and Mira for my gifted copy!
Hannah Mary McKinnon is a genius. I could not turn the pages fast enough, but I did not want to miss a single word. This is diabolical, mesmerizing, riveting and irresistible. The bar is very high here—because her incredible SISTER DEAR left left me gasping for breath. But here she takes storytelling to a new level – – psychological, sinister, and completely believable. This is skill, this is joy, this is the passion of an experienced and careful author. Standing ovation.
Magnificently malevolent and darkly diabolical, what begins as a case of amnesia quickly turns into a riveting, sinister ride. Every twist, every layer skilfully unravels to an explosive conclusion that will have you gasping out loud. You Will Remember Me is an absolute knockout!
Seriously messed up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This book is something else. I have happily reading along and then some things started to not sit quite right. Little niggling’s in the back of your mind are saying all is not right in this world… You can say that again!
This author takes you places you don’t really expect. You feel big swings of emotion. The biggest – Love and hate – Loved Jack; Loved Lily … Hated Maya. You start to see issues and at several points I did not even want to keep reading. But I did only to find my thoughts and feelings were correct all along.
McKinnon is not afraid of delivering the unexpected shock value in this book. She makes subtle changes along that way that seep into the story to keep you on your toes as the story takes on a different feel and level of disturbance. Twisted and chilling with a wild ending that makes you feel a bit ill, then just ticks you off! This is one story that you will remember! It is seriously messed up!
A man wakes up on the beach, with no memory of how he got there or who he is. Sure, we’ve heard that premise before, right? It’s been done so much, it should have its own specific genre. But McKinnon takes this storyline and runs with it in the most delightfully twisted way, full of family feuds, jealousy and hidden secrets.
When Lily Reid’s boyfriend goes out for a swim and doesn’t return, she instantly fears that she’ll never see him again. The police have stopped looking for him, and Lily knows that she will have to investigate herself if she ever wants to find Jack. But her investigation only leads to more questions as she discovers that Jack is not who he said he was, and in fact, he has been hiding everything (even his real name) from her for a long time.
Maya Scott has been looking for her estranged stepbrother, Asher, for two years since he vanished without a trace. When he shows up in her hometown, disoriented and confused, Maya is overjoyed, even though Asher has no idea who she is. Maya is desperate to keep him by her side and she will go to great lengths to make sure he forgets why he ran away in the first place.
Almost right at the start, I had made a pretty good guess as to the outcome of the novel, or at least who the key player was. As is the way with novels like this, I was only partly right. Lily and Maya are both completely different characters, with similar devious pasts, and immediately, one emerges as the guilty party. Then of course, the “man on the beach”, although likable, is not someone I immediately trusted, so I was weary about him until the very end, when his true character is revealed.
“You Will Remember Me” is page-turning and addicting, with one twist after another. Although I had predicted most of the outcome, I was blown away by the massive twist at the end. It was completely unexpected and yet made perfect sense.
Sure, the premise has been done before (and overdone perhaps) but it takes the right author to make it work, and to suck a reader in. McKinnon has done that, and more, and I anxiously await novel number six.
Okay Hannah Mary McKinnon, you got me again! The last book I read by this author (Sister Dear) had a controversial ending for me that I wasn't sure I liked, and I had to spend a long time thinking about what I wanted to rate, and say, for You Will Remember Me as well. As soon as I read the first few words I was HOOKED to this novel. The pacing is quite quick and between that and the viewpoint changes, there is a lot of mystery and intrigue very quickly. Then we get introduced to the character of Maya and things get real weird, real fast. She was all kinds of messed up, and you can tell right away there is something not quite right with her. I love seeing characters like this in books, and McKinnon sure knows how to write them in a way that makes the reader uncomfortable while also propelling you to keep reading because you need to know what they are going to do.
A lot of this book is predictable which at first was a disappointment for me, but after spending more time thinking about it I realized it really is rather genius as well. The end left me feeling strangely satisfied, and there were a whole two characters I actually felt sorry for and Asher was not one of them. You Will Remember Me is a dark dive into family secrets, and the end will leave you wondering what on earth just happened. I recommend going into it as blind as possible, and just enjoy the ride it will take you on.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
There are a lot of 4 and 5-star reviews for this, so this must be a me thing.
I enjoy memory-loss plots because they generate a lot of intrigue and mystery. While this one certainly does that, it was also too predictable. The "twist," if we're even calling it that, was so obvious I'm starting to think it was intentional.
Far-fetched, melodramatic, WEIRD, and quite boring. The ending has a high degree of shock value and will split readers. I actually loved the ending, but the ride to get there wasn't enjoyable.
I'm 0-2 with this author, so she just may not be for me. Cheers!
Oh wow!! This was my first book by @hannahmarymckinnon ! 😍 What took me so long?! Dark and twisted?! Yes please! 🙋♀️
This was such a fast read! I knew something was off… but I wasn’t sure exactly what?? 🤨
Two puzzling mysteries… had me flipping the pages..😍… as Jack goes missing.. I began to wonder if he just left his girlfriend Lily and escaped to a new life…🤷♀️
Then a man wakes up on a beach…with amnesia… ohhh could he be the same guy?! 🤔 Yet I didn’t think so because his sister comes forward and “claims” him… he is not Jack but Asher… so where is Jack? Why is Asher’s sister such a psycho?!😂
Sooo… I thought I finally had it all figured out… and then that ending..🤭😳🤯🤐 Holy creepy messed up crap! 😂 Needless to say I loved it! What can I say… I love crazy endings!! 🤷♀️
I am definitely trying to read more of my backlist this year… so excited to find another great author that I enjoyed!! ❤️ I can’t wait to read her new one!
I usually am not a fan of amnesia storylines but I am a huge fan of Hannah Mary McKinnon and that's why this book landed on my TBR list.
Author Hannah Mary McKinnon does not disappoint. The author's character development is strong and her plotline is compelling.
About midway through the book, the ending seemed very predictable. READER BEWARE: The book's dark, OMG ending was anything but predictable. Yes, this book's explosive ending truly elevated this book by taking the concepts of "sinister" and "disturbing" to exciting new levels.
I listened to the audiobook. I always love it when audiobooks are read by multiple narrators and two of this book's narrators did an outstanding job. The narrator reading Maya's role had an irritating voice and I was grateful that she did not narrate the entire book.
Hannah Mary McKinnon is one of my "go-to" authors and I look forward to reading her future titles.
Love, lies, and murder with a very disturbing, jaw-dropping end. No hea’s here. This is dark dark dark. It’s gripping and chilling.. giving me all the feels that put me in mind of the movie Fatal Attraction (which I loved!) I thoroughly enjoyed the amnesia trope that ended on a very unexpected, thrilling end! A great read!
It's a really, really good, twisted thriller, and one that almost instantly will draw you in. The story is dark, wicked and diabolical, complete with obsession, manipulation and devious behavior from all the equally flawed characters. The story is told from three different points of view, and you will immediately know that all is not what it seems. There is definitely something off with the characters and each seems to be hiding something from their pasts.
Memory loss is a good way to build on a theme, which is what the author does with the man from the beach. While this isn’t by any means anything new, but the way it’s done here is just...clever.... something that keeps it from becoming the same pattern we’ve all seen before. We also have just the right number of twists and turns to really keep you on edge as the story slowly begins to unfold. Once you start reading it, you will not want to stop, so make sure that you have nothing else important to do once you start to read. I read this one in an afternoon since I had to see how it was all going to come out in the end...and you will be SOOO surprised. I definitely did not see that coming.
I don't usually recommend a book...even a really, really good one as everyone has different idea about what constitutes a "really good read"...but I believe any Mystery & Suspense fan will find this one their "cuppa tea".
Master storyteller Author Hannah Mary McKinnon returns following Sister Dear (2020) with a dark and twisted tale— YOU WILL REMEMBER ME. Trust me, you will remember this psychological thriller and its maze of juicy secrets and lies.
“Diabolical, twisted, and cleverly crafted Well-developed characters and an unpredictable ending make this one totally irresistible. A wicked cat-and-mouse triangle—which one will be left standing in the end?”
How can you trust anyone when you can't trust yourself?
Forget the truth. Remember the lies.
Jack Smith wakes up on the beach early one morning in Maryland with amnesia after sustaining a head injury.
His girlfriend, Lily, is waiting on him for their special breakfast, and he does not show. She is desperate to find him.
With the help of Jack's landlord, they try to find him and realize he often goes to the beach, where they find his car. However, before they arrive, Jack has awakened and pulled toward Maine (his hometown) even though he does not know why.
Maya (estranged stepsister) to Asher has longed to see her brother again. When Jack turns up (really Asher), she is delighted. Yet, he cannot remember all the history and secrets that led him away in the first place.
Too bad for him since this is the place he tried desperately to escape in the first place.
Lily soon learns Jack is not the person she thought he was. What is he hiding or running from? She also has secrets of her own.
Lily hears about a man on TV news that shows up and thinks this may be Jack. She travels to Maine, where she comes face to face with stepsister Maya.
Maya is not excited about Jack's girlfriend showing up. She is jealous and manipulative. Lily does not trust her.
Jack slowly starts gaining some of his memories, and there is hope for Lily and Jack. Lily desperately wants him to remember their lives back in Maryland.
However, something is off with Maya. Something sinister and Lily gets concerned, but Jack wants everyone to get along.
What really happened in Maine all those years ago for Jack to escape under a new identity? Who is in danger? Who is the perpetrator? Who is the evil one?
Wow! What a ride. Hannah cleverly leads you down a twisted dark evil road with well-developed characters and riveting suspense, keeping you glued to the pages, not knowing what jaw-dropping hammer (or other tools or tricks in her bag) will drop next.
From past to present, a propulsive journey through a winding maze of secrets. Get this one on your list, thriller lovers! For fans of B.A. Paris, Mary Kubica, and Hank Phillippi Ryan.
On a side note: My favorite new word: "Discombobulate." (Sally Hepworth, your favorite word- you will love this). What a wild and crazy ride. Hannah, you have outdone yourself. On to the dark side—this character is pure evil (you notice I did not say the gender). Watch your back. The three are pretty messed up. You will be guessing to the final explosive ending.
OMG! I could not sleep for many nights reading this one! My heart was pounding for days and nights. Love the dark humor. Fans of Mary Kubica's Local Woman Missing (5/4) will enjoy this one. You will get the connection. I think the sneaky manipulative characters should team-up.
Move this to the top of your list. In the meantime, check out my Elevator Ride with Hannah (2020) Sister Dear.
I have read all her books, and I think this is my favorite! Be sure and tune in to Hank & Hannah show @firstchapterfun on Tues and Thursdays. Love these two gals!
Jack wakes up on a deserted beach in Maryland and has no idea of who he is, where he is, or how he got there.
Meanwhile, Lily, his girlfriend, wonders why Jack never stopped by or hasn’t called.
Jack runs along the beach trying to find something familiar, and the only thing he sees that is familiar is a Maine license plate on a trailer. He climbs in and is taken to Maine without the owner’s knowledge.
When he arrives in Maine, memories surface, and he remembers a phone number. He dials the number, and his stepsister, Maya, recognizes his voice and finds him at a convenience store.
Jack has no idea who Maya is but trusts that she is his stepsister and goes home with her.
Maya had a crush on Jack when they were growing up and was devastated when he left home. She didn't want to lose Jack again and was so happy to find him.
Maya figures out Jack has amnesia, but doesn’t really want him to regain his memory. She hides the fact from Jack that he is a missing person.
The tension in this book is subtle, but you definitely feel it and know it is there.
What is Maya’s story and what are her secrets?
Why did Jack leave in the first place?
Will Jack's memory come full circle?
What will he really remember?
If you are a fan of thrillers, biting your fingernails, solving mysteries, and page-turning suspense, YOU WILL REMEMBER ME should not be missed.
What a terrific read and ending. 5/5
This book was given to me as an advanced digital review copy by the publisher via NetGalley.
