Is he an enemy?

Dillon Young is proud that she inherited her aunt’s ranch. The problem: someone is trying to run her off and is willing to do whatever it takes. Strange, dangerous things keep happening. Dillion suspects her no-good neighbor and fellow wealthy rancher Hank Stephens. Never a man to get his hands dirty, he sends others to get the job done. So, when the irresistible Cal Bennett is found passed out drunk on her property, Dillion is on high alert. Until someone takes a shot at her and Cal springs to her rescue. When the hard-bodied, no-nonsense-talking cowboy points out that she may need some help, Dillion is inclined to reluctantly agree.

Or a lover?

Waking up on a stranger’s property with a shotgun in his face is not Cal Bennett’s idea of a good time. Never mind that the woman on the other end of the barrel is one of the most fiercely beautiful women he has ever seen. Things get more interesting when he finds himself shielding her from flying bullets. It’s clear that this smart, savvy woman could use a hand and he is all too happy to lend any part of his body she requires. His proposal: pose as lovers until they find out who is after her ranch. As the danger rises and secrets are revealed, the passion explodes between them. There is no turning back.

That Cowboy of Mine by Donna Grant
Contemporary western romance. A bit of suspense.
Cal wakes up after a night of drinking on the wrong end of a shotgun. Dillion doesn’t know why Cal is on her ranch, but she knows her horse is missing and Cal is a suspect.
Cal and Dillion team up to determine who stole the horse and why.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook narrated by Monica King. I enjoyed the performance and believe the narrator did a good job of using specific voices for the main characters making it easy to differentiate. The emotions were clear and not overdone. The audiobook also held my attention where the text may not have on horses, their colors, or land values.
I tried different speeds and found the best conversational speed for me was 1.3 without losing any voice nuances or dialog.

Enjoyable romance with a bit of suspense and heat.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

This is a Cowboy Romantic Suspense. This book takes you on a great ride that has action, suspense, and some romance. I loved the two main characters (Cal and Dillon) in this book. Cal and Dillon just worked together so well, and you could feel their love for each other coming off the pages. The ending of this book was just so good. There was a lot going on in this book, and this book was non stop until the end which I loved so much. I did see some of the twists coming. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's) or author (Donna Grant) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

It's always a pleasure to read a Donna Grant book and this newest release isn't an exception: the plot is full of twists and danger, the characters are strong and passionate, and the pace is great. If anything, this book is even more focused and streamlined than Gran't previous standalones. This one is all about trust. Trust, loyalty, dreams, passion, and love, of course.

Cal Bennett wakes up with a shotgun aiming at hime and it is clear that Dillon Young means business. Someone stole her prized stallion Legacy and it happened while Cal was having his drink-induced nap on her land. Unfortunately, this rodeo champion doesn't remember anything from the night before, Then someone shoots at Dillon and Cal who yanks her out of the bullet's way at the very last moment. Dillon is torn between two contrasting feelings. Can she trust Cal who had an opportunity to sabotage her business? Can she not trust him after he saved her life? She has been burnt before and decided it was better to shut her feelings and focus on the ranch she inherited unexpectedly from her aunt Dolly. Dillon has been alone for too long and this charmer of a cowboy is only happy to help out at the ranch. A bit of insta-love/lust? perhaps, but wait till you read how comfortable they are with each other.

The protagonists are both people of great integrity and the more you read, the better you will understand where they are coming from. Not only is Dillon strong and independent, she also shows a lot of courage in face of danger. Cal also has his own backstory of following in his father's footsteps and perhaps never stopping long enough to work out what his own dreams are. Well, not until he meets Dillon.

The mystery/suspense element seems a bit stronger in this book, although do expect at leasy one hot and steamy scene. We find out who wants to harm Dillon and get her ranch by all means early on. Again, there are a few unexpected twists thrown in by Donna Grant who knows how to keep her reader engaged. The book was action-packed with a great pace from the beginning to its nailbiting climax and sweet epilogue. My only complaint was that the villains and their motivations seemed to be a bit one-dimensional. Having said that, the book was gripping and well-balanced.

A quick and enjoyable read for anyone who loves a good romantic suspense story. Can't wait to read Donna Grant's next book!

Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin's Press for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Really enjoyed this one. Heavy on the suspense, too light on the heat and romance for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From the cover to the ending, Grant knows how to grab your attention. Her contemporary cowboy romance books are a suspenseful, steamy treat every time. I love reading and reviewing her stories!
This one has several interesting twists that you do not expect which builds that anticipation. I love the connection between Cal and Dillion. It is made of mutual respect and that is sexy in its own right. Did I want more heat and fire? Heck yes, but the story flowed perfectly and made for a captivating read.
With a unique storyline and a great HEA that we come to love and expect from Grant, That Cowboy of Mine is an intense, sexy story that is tough to put down plus leaves a smile on your face!
Dillon has inherited her late Aunt's ranch after her unexpected passing and she couldn't be happier, not that her aunt passed because she loved her but that she left her the ranch because she used to love going there to get away from things and always took comfort in helping her aunt work the ranch. Now that she is the owner she's facing some things she never thought she would, someone is trying to take the ranch from her.
Cal awakes from a night of over indulging on a ranch with no recollection on how he got there but that isn't the only bad thing that's happened that morning, nope, it's the owner of the ranch that found him and is accusing him of stealing her prized stallion. OH BOY!
Things only get more intense from there and it's a great ride. This story was high on suspense and a little low on the romance for my taste but there was something about Cal and Dillon that had me holding out hope that things would get spicier, and while it didn't get too spicy it was a little steamy and it was a solid read.
I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys Steamy Cowboy Romances, Western Romances, or Romantic Suspense Reads.
Happy Reading!!!
That Cowboy of Mine is an exciting and romantic contemporary romance that follows Dillon and Cal as they work together to figure out who is threatening Dillon and her ranch. Dillon’s determined to make a success of the ranch she inherited, even when strange and dangerous accidents start happening. When she finds Cal, a handsome rodeo champion, passed out on her land with no recollection of how he got there, Dillon becomes instantly suspicious, especially since Cal showed up the same day her prized stallion disappeared.
Cal is immediately drawn to Dillon, and he proves his innocence right after Dillon finds him. As the pair works together to figure out who is targeting Dillon and the ranch, Cal must also show the slow-to-trust Dillon that his feelings are true. Will Dillon trust Cal’s intentions and take a chance on love? And who is trying to run Dillon off?
This is an exciting romantic suspense filled with danger, intrigue, and several unexpected twists and turns. The characters are fleshed out well, with compelling protagonists and villains you love to hate. Though Dillon thinks she knows who is targeting her, several people have motives, and she never knows who she can trust, which makes for an intense and suspenseful read.
Dillon and Cal are both interesting and dynamic characters. They both go through a lot as they become immersed in a situation that is far bigger than either realized. They also deal with their own struggles as well. Dillon has trust issues, which isn’t surprising considering everything she’s gone through, and Cal is questioning many different aspects of his life.
The pair has fantastic chemistry, and there’s a ton of sexual tension between the two. Though their relationship is a bit insta-lovey, and they both acknowledge their attraction to each other, they have a lot to face before they take their relationship to the next level. I love how Cal constantly and consistently proves his feelings are sincere, and his determination to keep this independent, intelligent, and brave woman safe definitely shows what an honorable and sincere man he is.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. It was a fast read that starts with an intense scene and doesn’t let up until the end. I would recommend the book to readers who enjoy romantic suspense or cowboy romances.
Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an advanced copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
That Cowboy of Mine was a fantastic read featuring a romance between a ranch owner dealing with random attacks and the man who helps protect her.
Dillon Young loves the ranch she inherited from her aunt and is determined to make her proud. Unfortunately someone wants Dillon off the land and they're willing to do whatever it takes to get her gone. Dillon suspects her wealthy neighbor, who made several offers for the ranch, of being behind it all. Wary of all strangers, Dillon is on high alert when she finds a man passed out drunk on her property. Cal Bennett has no idea how he ended up on Dillon's land or why he's there but he certainly has no interest in taking her land. And when someone takes a shot at her, he knocks her out of the way. With Dillon's life on the line, Cal offers to pose as her lover for extra security. As the two work together to find out who is behind the threats, their fake romance starts to feel all too real.
Dillon lived in the city prior to her aunt's passing but she tried to spend as much of her free time as she could at the ranch. The ranch was the one place Dillon felt at peace and that's not something she wants to give up. Now that her aunt is gone, the ranch is the place she feels closest to her. The threats on the ranch and Dillon's life started not long after she took over and made it clear she was there for the long haul. I liked how Dillon refused to back down in the face of the threats while she was also realistic about what she could handle alone.
Cal is the son of a rodeo man and followed in his father's footsteps once he was old enough. At the most recent qualifying event, Cal didn't make the cut so he went to a bar to drown his sorrows before somehow ending up on Dillon's land. Now that he doesn't have the rodeo, Cal is unsure what to do with his life as he never imagined another path for himself. Him being unsure of his future was very relatable and I liked seeing him find a place for himself on Dillon's ranch independent of his desire to protect her.
Dillon and Cal's relationship does not get off to a good start as she is immediately suspicious of him being on her land and he has no explanation for why he's there. Despite the animosity, the two are immediately attracted to one another so when Cal proposed the ruse of him posing as her lover, I was immediately invested as I love fake dating romances. It doesn't take long for the pair to give in to the attraction between them and the scenes were very well done. Their relationship does hit a bit of a snag when events lead to Dillon suspecting Cal of being involved in what's going on. There's definitely a lack of communication there which was frustrating at times but ultimately made sense given what was going on. The investigation into who is terrorizing Dillon was well done and went in several directions I wasn't expecting. The build up in the plot is well done and the final confrontation with the bad guy was fantastic.
Overall That Cowboy of Mine was a great read and I would highly recommend it.
This was a quick and easy read. It's a romantic suspense that starts with the action right at the beginning, which is why I easily read this in one sitting. There isn't much mystery to who the bad guys are, but I still found this a good suspense read. I also really liked Cal and Dillon, our main couple. Cal pretty much feel in love at first site and yet, I would still consider this a slow burn romance. You could tell Dillon wanted to trust Cal from the beginning but too much had happened to let her guard down. This was a good read.
That Cowboy of Mine is a romantic suspense story that will have you on the edge of your seat. What happens when you wake up after drinking too much and are accused of a crime? Cal Bennett finds himself in a sticky situation when a shotgun is pointed at him by a cowgirl named Dillon Young. She’s out looking for her prized horse when she comes upon a stranger who could be the culprit. Not knowing whether to trust him or not, she hires him to work on the ranch, just because she is desperate for help. For several months bizarre and dangerous things are happening at Dillon’s ranch and someone wants her gone. The danger increases when shots are fired and Cal saves her from death. You know who the bad guys are but still need to figure out the why. Things aren’t always what they seem and it is so hard to trust your instincts. This plot driven story is heavy on the suspense and light on the romance and I just couldn’t put it down. The author really knows who to spin and captivate the reader and I devoured this story easily.
It’s been a while since I’ve read one of Grant’s Contemporary Romances. Usually, I stick to her the Paranormal Romance because I think that’s where her voice truly shines, but since I enjoy her writing so much, I decided to give this one a shot.
First off, I still enjoy the writing. There’s no question that Grant can pen lots of unique and original stories. However, I find her Contemporaries to be lacking somehow. The cowboy element doesn’t bother me one bit. In fact, I loved this aspect of the book. However, the mystery and suspense subplot always throws me off. I feel like it doesn’t meld well together and a lot of scenes feel odd or forced to me.
I just don’t think it flows well together and many of the suspense scenes just feel out of place. It’s a bit jarring to read and forces me out of the story.
It’s disappointing because I really want to like her Contemporary books, but I just can’t seem to love them as much as her Paranormal ones.
I’ve come to love Donna Grant as an author and love her stories. “That Cowboy of Mine” did not disappoint. This is romantic suspense novel that is engaging, suspenseful, has its share of action and a bit of romance to boot. Dillon has inherited her aunt’s ranch and is determined to keep it running despite the many obstacles that are against her. Her biggest obstacle…someone wants to kill her for her land. Then there is Cal, a rodeo man who shows up on her ranch and doesn’t know how he got there. Between the two, they couple into a formidable team to uncover who is out to kill her and obtain what they want at any cost.
Oh my goodness, this was such a good read and I loved the building romance between Cal and Dillon. You can feel their attraction from day one and it just kept progressing throughout the pages. I love a budding romance with its share of steamy and it was nicely done by the author. This book was just a page turner for me until the very end which was written so very well. Recommend the read.
Gripping, menacing, and taut!
That Cowboy of Mine is a riveting, seductive tale that takes us to Hill Country, Texas and into the life of the strong, confident Dillion Young who, after inheriting her Aunt Dolly’s ranch and deciding to stay, quickly discovers that someone desperately wants her to leave and figuring out the good guys from the bad is going to be a lot harder than she originally expected, especially when it comes to the ruggedly handsome, bull rider Cal Bennett who suspiciously turned up just when she needed him.
The writing is sharp and crisp. The characters are complex, wary, and intriguing. And the plot is a passionate tale filled with twists, turns, secrets, red herrings, lies, danger, sexual attraction, mayhem, betrayal, corruption, and steamy romance.
Overall, That Cowboy of Mine is an action-packed, twisty, satisfying standalone by Grant that kept me on my toes, warmed my heart, and certainly left me eager for more.
Cal just shows up on Dillon's ranch, and he can't remember how he got there. Dillon thinks he is involved with the disappearance for her horse. Lots of searching both for the horse and each other's feelings along the way. She kicks him off the ranch, but he still helps try to find the horse. Sure didn't see that person as the bad guy.
That Cowboy of Mine is the love story between Cal and Dillon. It is also a mystery/thriller/suspense that had me glued to the book. It also helped that I enjoy reading books from Donna Grant.
The plotline was interesting. Cal is woken up by the sound of Dillon cocking her rifle to shoot him. A bull rider, who didn’t get on the circuit, he had decided to drown his sorrows at a local bar. He has no clue what he did or how he ended up on Dillon’s land. But, when he saves her from bullets, he is instantly embroiled in a plot to drive Dillon from her land. Determined to protect her, Cal hatches a plan to pose as her new lover and stay with her at the ranch until everything is sorted out. But, that proves to be hard when secrets are unearthed, and the attempts on Dillon’s life grow. Can Cal and Dillon solve the mystery of why these things are happening? Can they figure out who is behind it? And most importantly, can their love survive what will be revealed?
Dillon annoyed me for about 90% of the book. I liked her, but man, she was quick to jump to conclusions about Cal. There were points in the book where I wanted to shake her because she was that irritating. But, as I said, I liked her. She cared about her ranch, and she wasn’t willing to sell it.
I liked Cal. He was on the up and up with Dillon, even if she didn’t trust him. Of course, what happened the night he was drunk did make me slightly suspicious of him. Also, his relationship with the person who was determined to get Dillon’s property made me raise my eyebrows a little. But, he was determined to help Dillon, even after she made him leave her property. I wasn’t expecting how far he was willing to go, though.
The villains in That Cowboy of Mine were despicable and evil. They wanted power and wealth and would do anything to get it. The main bad guy was more willing to get his hands dirty (killing people), while the second bad guy did have reservations, at first, about what bad guy#1 was doing. But he lost those towards the end of the book and was just as evil as bad guy#1. But there was a 3rd bad guy that came out of nowhere. I was beyond shocked when he just popped up towards the end of the book.
The mystery genre was well written. I did feel that the author stretched out the plotline (why did the bad guys want Dillon’s land). But that feeling went away when the author added two twists to the story. One was why the bad guys wanted the land, and the other was the surprise 3rd bad guy who just appeared out of thin air. That added some extra kick towards the end of the book.
The suspense angle of the book was terrific. I found myself growing anxious and wondering what would happen to Dillon next. The author was able to draw out the events and keep me on edge for the entire book. I loved it!!!
Westerns are my guilty pleasure, and this one didn’t disappoint me. I could have used a few more scenes on the ranch, but I was happy with what the author portrayed.
Since this is a contemporary romance, I expected the sex scenes to be hot and graphic. I wasn’t disappointed. Cal and Dillon had an electric connection that came off the pages. My only complaint was this book took place within a week, so you know that means Instalove. Not a fan of Instalove. But besides that, I enjoyed that angle of the book.
The end of That Cowboy of Mine was fantastic. I loved how the author resolved all the plotlines. Of course, there was some suspense involving Cal, but that also worked itself out. The epilogue was cute, but I did roll my eyes at what Cal’s mother kept asking.
I would recommend That Cowboy of Mine to anyone over 21. There is graphic sex, moderate language, and moderate violence.
*Thank you to NetGalley & St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this title.*
This was a Contemporary Cowboy Romance which starts with a horse theft and mystery and leads to a suspenseful team up.
I haven't read many contemporary cowboy tales lately, so this was a unique tale for me. I was very drawn in by the set up of this tale. Our hero, Cal wakes up hungover and in a compromising position. Our heroine, Dillion, has inherited her aunt's ranch and is very suspicious of the passed out cowboy on the edge of her land. When he saves her from getting shot, she reluctantly agrees to give him a job as thanks.
But that doesn't mean she trusts him, and he isn't completely sure if she should either. There is a lot more going on behind the scenes than either of them realize. When they choose to pose as lovers to find out answers, their chemistry will not be denied.
I liked the setting and the set up of the plot.
I didn't like all the outside forces in this one and it was tough to stay engaged at certain times. I didn't feel as much of the chemistry as I was hoping to.
Not a bad tale and I would read another book by this author in the future.
Cal Bennett was a bull rider, at least he had been but he had failed to qualify for the next rodeo so he headed to a bar to drink away the disappointment. The next morning, when he woke up with a shotgun in his face, on some rancher's property, he had no recollection of how he got there. But, the face behind the gun was stunning.
Dillon Young had inherited her aunt's ranch but weird things had been happening and when she found a stranger on her ranch and her prize horse missing, she was sure he was involved. But, when shots were fired at her and he saved her life, she was confused. Was he innocent and could he be trusted to protect her or did she need to keep her distance to save her life and her heart?
I really enjoyed the story and there were some major twists and turns, intrigue and murder. There was also some foul language, which I don't really like in my stories, especially f-bombs. There was one graphic sex scene in the book. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the story and felt it was well written.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
Combining thrilling suspense with a sultry Cowboy Romance, Donna Grant grabs my attention once again in her latest standalone release.
Dillon Young has inherited her aunt’s ranch and decides to stay and make a go of it raising the cattle and breeding Quarter Horses, but her ranch is holding on by a thread and so is she after all the mishaps. Someone wants her to sell out and leave and Dillon knows just who it is. She just needs to find a non-corrupt lawman and prove it.
Meanwhile, is the booze-soaked hungover cowboy she finds the night her prize Quarter Horse stud disappeared part of it or a big coincidental lifesaver? Cal has made his way into her trust and her heart as he helps her on the ranch, supports her, and keeps her out of the path of bullets, but weird happenings have her doubting everyone including him.
Cal didn’t make the bull-riding finals for rodeo and he’s flat broke, but going on a binder landed him in just the right place to help attractive, admirable Dillon with her troubles. If only she would trust him. Not that he blames her since he has connections to the big rancher next door trying to get her ranch. He aims to find out what is going on even if old ties and loyalties are stretched and broken.
I enjoy Donna Grant’s brand of romantic suspense and don’t mind that a lot of the book leans toward the suspense side in many ways. Dillon and Cal were wonderful characters who have their struggles and, in her case, struggles to accept the romance between them because of the circumstances. I enjoyed the mystery even though the reader is well aware of who the villains are and what they are doing from their own point of view. There are still some surprises and twists. Even Cal is a potential suspect which was a fun part to me. There are some sharp action moments that help build the story to a rush of a climax scene. The romance heats up in the background and takes the foreground now and then, but never feels neglected because these two talk about that aspect of their lives that builds relationships even while she still wonders if he’s part of the trouble.
All in all, this kept me fully focused and flipping pages rapidly through to the end. Definitely one I’d recommend to those who love cowboy romances, but also romantic suspense.
I rec’d the eARC through NetGalley to read in exchange of an honest review.
Well, this story really give us a lot to unpack.
Dillon and Cal's story was very heavy on the suspense, and that didn't leave us much room for a romance (and maaaaan, with their chemistry they needed much more to happen, but I digress). I like the ride we were taken on, and there were a few twists and turns and wtf moments.
It has been a while since I have read a Donna Grant story, and this one makes me want to go and read more again.
Dillon Young is happy to have inherited her aunt’s beloved ranch. Unfortunately, someone else is determined to have it for themselves and her refusal to sell has led to increasing dangerous accidents occurring around the ranch. Dillon is sure she knows who’s responsible, but she has no way of proving it, especially when the man has others to do the dirty work for him. Dillon’s guard is up so she’s incredibly suspicious when she finds handsome bull rider Cal Bennett passed out on her property, still drunk from the night before. He can’t remember what happened and has no idea how he came to be there, but when someone takes a shot at Dillon, Cal leaps to save her. When Cal offers to stay on the ranch and help her, Dillon reluctantly agrees, despite not completely trusting him.
Cal isn’t exactly thrilled to wake up in a strange place looking down the barrel of a shotgun, but the woman holding it is the most beautiful he’s ever seen. When bullets start flying, it becomes clear she needs his help even if she doesn’t want to admit it, so he suggests they pretend to be in a relationship as he tries to help her get to the bottom of the nefarious happenings on the ranch. The danger only intensifies as secrets come to light and the connection between Dillon and Cal becomes all too real, as is the threat to their lives.
I have never read this author before, so I went in unsure what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked this setting and the fast pace and suspense level of the story. We basically know who the villain is the entire time, but he’s hard to pin down and we don’t really know how the hero wound up on the heroine’s ranch, so the suspense level stays pretty high the whole time, despite this knowledge. Given the gaps in Cal’s memory, Dillon is never quite sure if she should trust him or not, but his wooing of her is sweet nonetheless, as is his protectiveness of her. Dillon is frustrating in her quickness to jump to conclusions about Cal while being oblivious to other possible dangers, but with people shooting at her and actively trying to kill her, her tendency toward hostility is understandable and makes her seem real rather than some unattainable version of strong womanhood.
I wasn’t terribly crazy about this narration just because sometimes the narrator’s voice lacked inflection and the delivery didn’t quite match what was going on in the scene. This perception, however, could also be due to the quality of the NetGalley shelf app as it does tend to have a tinny sound quality to it no matter what. Overall, I really liked this story and I think I’m going to be looking for more romantic suspense like this.
After a bit of a slow start, the action picked up fairly quickly and became quite gripping.
Dillon Young is struggling to keep things afloat after inheriting her aunt’s ranch. And it’s not even her fault. Somebody is definitely trying to intimidate her into selling and she has a good idea who. When a drunk Cal Bennett suddenly shows up on her property, her suspicions rise to an even higher level. But she is left confused when Cal saves her life more than once.
Dillon and Cal had a boatload of chemistry right from the start. Things developed rapidly and it got very serious very fast. The only disappointing element for me was that they spent most of the story apart, during which time Dillon believed the worst of Cal. And only at the end did they make it back together and suddenly all was forgiven. Both were strong, interesting characters.
The whodunnit element of the story was partly known and partly not, and this was what made it difficult to put down. I kept wondering about Cal’s involvement and the reasons for terrorizing Dillon. The action moved fast once it got started properly. And I found the bad guys believable and human.
Overall, it was pretty exciting and I enjoyed it. I can recommend this if you like contemporary romance with suspense thrown in.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
*Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Paperbacks for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.*
I devoured this book in one sitting. Usually, I don't read westerns and read this on a wim but honestly it may just be a new favorite genre of mine. You'll meet Cal and Dillion in this book who have run into each other unexpectantly. Dillion is the owner of a ranch she inherited from her aunt while Cal is a rodeo man who gets drunk one night and ends up on her land.
Within the first 3 chapters, BAM action!! Shots fired, lives rescued and that was all it took to captivate me in this western world.
description
Someone is trying to kill Dillion for her land?? only who? Dillion is a strong independent woman who doesn't take any nonsense from people. I loved this character and how she stands up for herself even when facing death and betrayal. This was a nice switch from my typical thrillers even though there was some suspense it had a mixture of romance involved. My only complaint is there wasn't quite enough romance... I needed more steamy and romantic scenes! *I wouldn't mind if there was a short novel featuring the characters in the future*
Overall, I found this book to be fast-paced and would recommend it to anyone in need of a quick suspenseful western novel. I'll definitely be reading the author's other books she has. In fact, I already borrowed an audiobook from one of her series and plan on starting it before the month ends :)
Ironically my pastor preached on Shame this past weekend, and I full on am a bit "Shamed" to admit that this was actually an enjoyable book.
I never read Cowboy Romance-like ever. Yes I read chick lit, but not romance let alone cowboy. However I was given this advanced copy by Netgalley and went in with an open mind. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this quick romance.
Cal is found on Dillon's ranch passed out drunk and her precious horse has been stolen. He is unsure how he ended up on her property or why, but the next thing she knows her life is in danger and she highly suspects her rich neighbor Hank has something to do with it. Hank has been pressing her for years to buy her property which she recently inherited from her deceased aunt Dolly. Unsure of why he wants the land so badly she is willing to fight to keep what is hers. Cal seems to be her knight in shining armor (Or should I saw cowboy in dusty flannel??) He swoops in and protects Dillon as her life seems to be in danger. As the two work together she begins to wonder who she can trust....
So this book would be more fitting if I was sitting at Myrtle Beach with a PBR (or other redneck beer of your choosing). Typical summer pot boiler for sure. You wouldn't want your kids or grandma seeing you read this one--the cover alone is steamy cheese. But all that being said for what it was, I enjoyed the story. Nothing shocking or major twist that I am use to with thrillers, but good enough story to keep my interest.
Thank you Netgalley for this advanced copy of the audiobook. I was not reimburst in anyway for my honest opinion.
Cowboy Romance at its best!
Dillon loves ranching and all it entails. She does not enjoy it when someone keeps trying to get her to quit her land. Her main suspect is the slimy rancher next door - she can never find enough evidence to point his way though.
Cal didn't expect a gun pointed at his face when he woke up on a strange piece of land. But he and Dillon find out they may have a common enemy. But can Dillon get over her distrust of the handsome stranger before something nasty happens to her?
Dillon is stubborn, independent to a fault and slow to accept any kind of help. Cal is worried about the memories he can't recall and how he ended up on Dillon's land. But he knows that Dillon's in trouble and he is willing and able to lend a hand. He's well aware of Dillon's abilities and doesn't want to eclipse her, just assist.
There is no real big aha moment when the bad guys are revealed, they are pretty stand out from the get-go but I did feel myself grudgingly wanting some redemption for one of them!
This was an enjoyable contemporary romance. Dillon inherited a ranch from her aunt, and is trying her best to make it work. However, things keep getting sabotaged, and the troubles seem to be escalating. When she finds Cal drunk and asleep by an open pasture gate, and her very expensive stallion gone, of course she suspects Cal of the worst.
Some things that stood out to me - Dillon is a planner - she has financial spreadsheets, tries to maximize income, gets insurance, and is very practical and hands on. I liked that touch of realism that is so often missing in romantic suspense.
Also, Cal isn't some ex-Navy-Seal/special investigator that comes in and saves the day. He helps, sure, but Dillon calls an ACTUAL official investigator (who is a great character), and the official does lead the investigation.
Thanks to NetGalley and Donna Grant for the chance to read an ARC or the book!
This was an entertaining romantic suspense read. Dillion has recently inherited a ranch from her aunt and has trouble brewing when she finds Cal on her land.
I enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other, even as they struggled with the outside forces trying to make things difficult. Ms Grant did an excellent job of balancing the suspense story line with the budding romance between Cal and Dillon. She also did a fantastic job of slowly revealing the master mind of the problems in such a way that the reader figures it out along with the characters.
As much as I enjoyed Cal and Dillon’s story, there were several small things - that I think really fall under personal preference- that pulled me out of the story. Those issues were what kept this from being a full 4 star read for me.
Set on a ranch inherited from a relative Dillon is enjoying life and is determined to make her new start count. But the Bar 4 ranch she now owns is wanted by some rather desperate individuals. So when she finds former rodeo star Cal passed out drunk on her land and her prized stallion missing Dillon is rightly suspicious. Yet, Cal has no idea how he ended up where he has but he's determined to find out and help Dillon get the answers as to why the Bar 4 has suddenly become such a desirable spot.
And with a nice mix of mystery and suspense. As well as a little romance, this was a really well-paced and engaging story. That I enjoyed reading a lot which is why I would happily recommend it to others.
Is or isn't Cal Bennett an enemy? That is what Dillon Young can't figure out.
Ever since she inherited the ranch from her aunt, strange things have been occurring. It's obvious that someone is trying to chase her from the property. She knows it must trace back to her neighbor, Hank Stephens who keeps making offers to buy it from her. But she can't prove it.
Cal mysteriously shows up when an attempt is made on Dillon's life. Even though he saves her, she can't get over the coincidence. It doesn't help that he's handsome and charming. He'd be the perfect person to distract her with. Yet, he seems sincere and kind. She doesn't want to believe he's a spy.
Cal's character is wonderful. He's had a troubled life of his own. He recently didn't make the cut for the rodeo and it led to a night of binge drinking. Cal needs direction and a plan. Then he meets Dillon and she needs his help. He isn't sure why, but he's instantly drawn to her.
The chemistry between these two was palpable. I enjoyed their interactions, but it was almost painful when Dillon struggled to believe in him. It was even more disappointing to see Cal doubt himself. Overall, this had a good storyline with likable characters.
While the story itself wasn’t particularly riveting or original, I rather enjoyed this one. I don’t normally read romances featuring cowboys or farmy settings, so it felt like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the same ol’ same historical romances and such.
I don’t really have anything negative to say other than I could’ve done without the insta-lust/declarations of love at the end, as I felt like the characters hadn’t known each other long enough to fall in love, but I guess I’m asking too much as this is at the end of the day, a romance novel.
Grant is a solid author and I could see myself reading more of her books.
Can I say that Cal sounds so hot?! Man, I wish I was Dillion! So, let's get to the review, Dillon finds Cal passed out drunk on her property and thinks that it was a set up but is not really sure about it. Since she is not sure and really needs the help, she hires him as hand for her ranch on the insistence of her ranch manager whom she trusts and respects. Dillon is really attracted to Cal and vice versa, we have betrayal, bow-chica wow wow, and then the truth comes out..
Are you ready for a meet-cute at gunpoint?
Cal wakes up to Dillon's shotgun pointed at him, moments after her prized stallion was stolen. This terrific romantic suspense tale starts off with a bang - literally! - and just gets better from there. I loved Cal's patient, steadfast manner as he works with Dillon to figure out what's going on and who's behind it all. The development of their romance was all about trust, naturally, though there was plenty of intense attraction to keep things lively.
I really enjoyed how the author gave us so many different perspectives, letting us into the minds of the heroes and the villains, while still keeping more than a couple surprises for the end. In the end, justice is well served and our lovely couple gets a very satisfying HEA.
This was a smart, snappy read that kept me engrossed from start to finish. I love all the Donna Grant books I've read thus far, and this one is right up there with the best of them. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
