Icehome #14

Sam's Secret

Rate this book
Life has taught me that I can't trust anyone. Not friends, not family. In the worst, darkest moments, no one can be counted on to have your back. Even a billion miles away from Earth, on a remote icy planet, I still feel alone. The only consolation? I haven't resonated. It's not that I don't want love or children. I just can't trust anyone, even myself.

But then one day, my khui resonates, and it's to the last guy I ever expected. In fact, I resonate so hard that my chest is singing its mating song before his does. That never happens.

So what does a calm, rational, grown woman do when life turns upside down?
She runs for the hills, of course.

I should have known he'd follow me.

Fruit cave vacation!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☺️😮😍😀
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Sam - She lived in fear of her psycho stalker ex-boyfriend and had nobody to help her. The cops were no use and she knew it was only a matter of time before he killed her. When all of the sudden she is kidnapped by aliens and wakes up on an ice planet. After waking up and finding out that she is on an alien planet and her ex is still back on Earth, she is happy and finally able to breathe for the first time in a long while.

The Hero: Sessah - He first met Sam when she arrived at the Icehome beach. He was a gangly teenage alien and he eventually returned to the Croatoan village with his people. Four years later, he is now a huge muscular beast of a man and his brother, who has a ‘knowing’ sense, tells him that he will soon resonate with someone at Icehome.

The Story: Sam was initially so happy after arriving on the ice planet. However, it wasn’t long before she began suffering from PTSD and having nightmares about her ex-boyfriend Brad somehow arriving and terrorizing her again. She spends all her time making weapons and finding ways to hide many of them on her body, clothes and boots. She just wants to be left alone and has learned how to hunt and use all of her weapons.

When Sessah returns to Icehome, Sam immediately resonates to him and is afraid. Though Sessah had always been a friend to her, she had never wanted to resonate with any man. She wanted to live her own life and had thought of leaving the camp to live on her own. So she runs away to the fruit caves as soon as she realizes she is resonating. Of course, Sessah follows her.

This book is told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Sean Crisden and Felicity Munroe. I like these two, Felicity has a very nice feminine voice which is very pleasant and Sean is great at alien romance narration. I like the accent he uses and his tempo of speech. The story on this one is definitely not original but I guess I really just love this world so much I don’t care.

'Does she not like that I have become a snack? Flor says it as if it is a good thing, but I wonder. Perhaps I am a snack and Sam prefers a full meal. The thought is discouraging.'

Honestly, I really don't know what to think of it this one. It was the same level of Dixon fun and fluff and smut . . . but I am definitely in the camp of people who didn't expect Sessah in this pairing?? Maybe that's because I'd always seen him as the lurking teen pining after Tia (and was really interested in that possibility??) so the sudden introduction of him as a MAN and the brief explanation of why he wasn't into Tia anymore was odd for me.

But I loved Sam's character and the romance was fun and a nice, slower burn than most of them. Lots of new plot thread possibilities introduced and can't wait for the next installments!! Even after loving the stories in the expanded world of this series, Not-Hoth still holds the most special place in my heart.

new pairing predictions

Flor & I'rec (because so much tension and fun chances)
Daisy & O'Jek
R'Jaal & Tia??? (not sure how I feel about this one because I was a staunch Tia/Sessah hoper)

and we might get new characters but who knows!

Reread, cause why not, I just love these two!

❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎ ❄︎

I have been waiting for Sam's book for what has felt like forever! And now that I have it, ugh *chef's kiss* I LOVE IT!

Our heroine Sam has been a mystery to all of us for quite some time now. Her obvious distrust towards men, her jumpy behaviour, the fact she couldn't sleep through the night (I think it was Devi's book that was mentioned), my heart just wanted her to find happiness so bad, cause we all know any of the Sa-Khui would be an utterly devoted gentle king to her. Learning about her past trauma, I think her fears are totally valid, as shit like that scars you. And whilst I think her idea of running away was silly - girl you can't escape resonance we've seen many try and fail (yet it never gets old), I loved that she slowly started to trust her mate and let down her guard around him. Every little touch between those two was big progress and I adore them (have I said that already? cause I will literally continue to say it a hundred more times).

And her hero, Sessah! Not gonna lie, he was a top pick of mine for her, though I was still kind of blind sided when he was revealed to her resonance. Though from minute one, I was sold on this couple. Sessah is, as Ruby Dixon has said herself, a big sweet himbo ahahah. There's just something special about the OG blue barbarian boys, so to finally have Sessah's story, I'm just so happy for him (ahahah I talk about these characters like they're my friends, but the amount I read these books, I am so utterly devoted to each character and their story, reading them being happy, brings me so much joy). The fact he's all grown up now, and a beast like his brother Aehako, made me feel things and I mean, the handstand he put Sam in during that spicy scene AAHAHAAHH I loved it!!

Sessah was the perfect hero for Sam. Patient, kind and protective, just all the key attributes of our favourite blue men. The way they are all just feral for their mates, in such a soft hearted way, where can I find that in I real life? ahah but seriously. And Sam, I love that she had taken initiative to be a badass, learning to hunt and protect herself. I think the climax of the story, proving she didn't no one but herself to save herself was essential to her growth, and the fact the love Sessah has for her only makes her stronger at the end of the day - they are the perfect team and I can't wait to see them in a few years with lots of little babies ahah.

Speaking of babies, all the babies in this book was a cutest overload! I love seeing big happy families and hearing about all the resonances! I could read books about just everyone chilling, living the family life in Croatoan and Icehome. But also the interactions Sessah had with his brothers Rokan and Aehako were some of my favourite scenes, besides from the main couple, and I just love how Sam not only has her mate now, but an entire extended family of people who have her back and will love on her - just another reason I think this couple is exceptionally perfect!

This just about sums up my review (if you can even call it that? It's more of an excited rant just ahah). I hope everyone enjoys Sam's Secret as much as I did! I can't believe there is only three ICehome books left, I'm not ready to leave the beach. But I'm very much looking forward to the love stories of our next three couples!

Below is just my updates from before the books release.

OK THIS COVER I CANNOT HANDLE THE GORGEOUSNESS!!!

Edit 2: Ok so it's totally Sessah! Unless Ruby is really totally tricking us. But I'm already converted to a full on Sam and Sessah shipper! He will treat her so well, be tentative, sweet and patient! And he has a big family, and by the sounds of things poor Sam has had a rough time with family in the past, now she's gonna get a beautiful, protective mate who will treat her as his world and an extended family, on top of all her friends in the tribe! AHHHHHHH I literally cannot wait. 10 days to go!!!

(first post) I'm really really hoping it's Sam and R'jaal!!

Spannender und düsterer als ich erwartet hätte. Nett für zwischendurch und es hat erfolgreich den Bookhangover von Evelyn Hugo verhindert. 🥰

This was so good.

Ruby does such an amazing job always having something different in each book so the series doesn't get stagnant. And boy did she change it up with this one. It was much darker and sinister than her normal sweet Icehome installments. We also got a hugh time leap, 3 years, which has changed the dynamics of the camp with most having had their kits. Yet the small handful that have still not resonated yet have maybe gotten a little more upset or bitter.

I never saw this pairing coming, but it was amazing and worked out just as it should. Resonance knows best after all LOL.

I've not disliked this one, but I didn't love it as much as other books from this series!

That said my main problem was Sam.
That's soooo stupid!!!

I adored Sessah! He's just plain PERFECT!!!

Between 3-3.5 stars: This is not a standout in the series, but it delivers what I love best about Ruby Dixon... her balance of humor, a willingness to have messy people go through messy or painful experiences and emerge triumphant, and a delightful sense of community. I would NEVER have put Sessah & Sam together, but she totally sold me on it! I also thought she progressed the timeline forward elegantly, and it was fun to see all the new adorable babies running around. Overall, not my favorite in the series, but a worthy entry & one that makes me PUMPED for Flor and Daisy's books!!

I admit that I'm getting kind of tired of this series because this is the billionth book and a lot of them have very similar storylines.

The first half of this book is very similar to many of the other books in this series, but the second half is different, which automatically makes it more interesting to me.

I tried hard with this one but I kept an eye more on the page count than the actual story. I was bored to tears. Some of these stories are just the same old thing and only now and then there’s one I can get through.

They’re not bad at all, I just think that I’m kinda done with them for awhile.

can't get enough of this universe, i dont want it to stop 😭

this new installment just made so SO happy 😭 this entire planet never fails to give me the happy mood and i wish for this series to never ever end. i love these tribes i love these books pLEASE i cant imagine not reading new ice planet book now .

on to this book, i was one of the minority that didnt saw sessah + sam coming. people were speculating about them way before this book and i couldn't see it but now that i read this book? oh how i saw. sam and sessah are perfect for each other. ruby dixon is excellent and masterful crafting the best for each pairing and she has never failed me before, if she can write crulden his HEA then let me tell you, miss dixon can absolutely write any pairings and we WILL ALL EAT IT UP bc she's that good of a writer

i love love love sessah interacting with the kits here 🥺 he's such a massive himbo too, i love him so much

also freaking love how strong and badass sam is here. I LOVE MY HEROINES STABBY and im so glad Ruby went there. I finally got to see another Ruby Dixon Heroine™ put bad guys in their place!

i love the entire process of sam's healing here. all the credit goes to her, actually. she's a bad ass, such a strong female character that she overshadowed sessah. honestly as she should, this is her book 😌

i read the updated list of the tribe and can i just say I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SPINOFF SERIES of the nextgen characters. like i said, i dont want to let go of this planet yet so miss ruby dixon, take all my money and GIMME MORE ICE PLANET SJWOJDKS lol

this book gave me EVERYTHING, anxiousness, the romance, i cried for daisy, and me cheering on for sam, the swoon over our massive hulking himbo sessah... its just everything i love in a book so 5 stars!!!

cant freaking wait for Flordeliza's book, Dalagang Filipina Flor representing! LET'S GOOOO

Cute cute cute but sadly too short 3.5 stars

This is book 15 in the series, so obviously I'm a fan. And you're a fan too, otherwise why would you read book 15 in a series?

What I liked about this one:
+ Sessah. He's big. He's burly. He's a marshmellow.
+ Sam. She's tough. She's secretive. You better not mess with her.
+ Drama, capital D. A wild enemy appears! Someone burns their face *le gasp*

What I didn't love about this one:
- Tia got bashed a lot. It's sad. I get that she's annoying, but give her a break! The girl is a teenager - who didn't grow up on a tough ice planet. She might be spoiled and a bit of an ass, but her wanting to kiss every eligible bachelor is hardly a crime!! Just sayin'.
- Daisy got bashed a little. Is being a stone-age fashionista really the worst thing she could be?
- in general, the women getting more flack than the men. Remember how Bek BOUGHT human slaves for himself and other tribe members? Sure he was exiled for ten seconds, but Tia (who was 16 when she arrived) and Daisy (who was a spoiled pet wife to a gay cat man) have been suffering the morality slaps for too many books now. Stop being such petty haters!
- it was short

Quick(ish) Review

Loved this latest entry into the Planet Blue Balls saga, which deals with the slightly younger man/slightly older woman trope, abuse issues and a darker edge than we’ve seen in a while. The story was strong, the romance was sweet, the sex was 🔥🔥🔥 and above all, the teaser for future books knocked me for a bit of a loop but damn if it hasn’t whet my appetite for the next entry. Ms. Dixon really keeps this little blue alien soap opera a hot ticket to ride and I’m ready for more. Def recommend as long as you are ok with the adult themes and kind of darker edge to your SFR.

2.5 stars?

Idk what I think of these books anymore lol this one was alright, but Sam was in desperate need of some therapy and it was weird seeing Sessah as an adult 😵‍💫 in the end they were cute enough together, but their big secret plot line was weird af and idk why they kept that a secret really but I feel like it will come out at some point but idk what implications it could have for the future. The way I’ve re-read/caught up to the IPB/IH series is by listening to them as audiobooks and this was the last one that’s available so I’m probably going to take a break from these series for a while and I think that’s for the best.

....................
Sam had a stalked ex boyfriend on Earth. She was happy she was kidnapped by aliens because Brad will never find her. But after Daisy arrived in her pod she realized other people could find the planet. She thought Brad might find her.

Sessah is 5 years younger than her. When she resonates to him, she runs away. He follows her but tells her he'll be patient and he never wants to scare her. He was very sweet.

I didn't like the "secret". They find a pod with someone in it. They wake him up. He is a bad guy. He tries to rape Sam. She kills him. Sessah helps her hide the body and the pod.

They both decide not to tell anyone because it will just make them scared. THIS IS SO STUPID.

How did this guy's pod get there? They suspected he was a slave or a prisoner but we never find out for sure. Did some slaver ship or prisoner ship lose a pod and just not realize it? No, they must be looking for the pod. We are even told bad guy has a bracelet around his ankle and his pod has lights. Sam says there could be a tracker.

Yet THEY LEAVE ALL THE OTHER ALIENS AND HUMANS UNAWARE THIS HAPPENED. What if some ship comes looking for that pod? Nobody knows to watch out for bad ships.

I liked the romance but this plotline with the bad guy left me feeling Sam is too stupid to live.

Also Daisy gets burned horribly on half of her face in this book. Veronica the healer can't fix it, daisy is scarred on her face now. Daisy was always very proud of her looks and hair so this is devastating for Daisy. She got burned saving a child from falling in the fire pit. So Daisy's a hero. Or she was a bad babysitter because one of the kids got too close to the fire pit. Hard to say.

Daisy's book might be next per the notes from the author at the end of the book.

For all Dixon's books, I generally like to write something from the 'Author's Note' section, like always - mild spoilers ahead, if you follow her on FB, you probably know these

Everyone's been asking what Sam's "secret" was the moment the title came out. Well, Sam has lots of secrets. Bitch LOVES her secrets. But for the title, in particular, it could be any of these:

- Resonating to Sessah before his khui kicked in (for those of you screaming this isn't how it happens, it did with Georgie & Vektal)

- Why she was so happy to be kidnapped by aliens

- The whole Kvasaht situation

Tadaa! Secrets upon secrets. Take your pick which one the title refers to. ;)

The next book would be Daisy's and I can't wait.

This was so much fun!!

I LOVED the time jump! I normally don't love time jumps, but I felt like this one was totally needed.

I don't want to tell you who Sam's love interest is in this one since it is supposed to be a secret! But I LOVED the romance between the two of them! So sweet! And I felt like they were very well suited for one another.

I cannot wait until the next book in the series to come out!!

I’m so happy we finally got Sessah’s story! We’ve kind of seen him grow up since the beginning of the Ice Planet Barbarian series and I’m really glad he wasn’t paired with Tia. He’s such a sweetie pie.

Reading a book set in the Ruby-verse is like coming home. I adore the books, the world, the premise of fated mates and devoted himbo's.

While this wasn’t a favorite of mine (I thought it went a little off the rails with the found pod) I still loved reading it.

I love this series, but this one is not my favorite.

Sessah is great, but Sam’s issues don’t make sense, and it was hard to be empathetic with her. I don’t want to discount her trauma, but it just was not a believable problem for me. I’ll still read the next installment, but this one was not love.
September 12, 2021
It’s been a long time since I didn’t absolutely love a Ruby book. While I did find this book enjoyable don’t get me wrong, it’s just not a favorite for whatever reason. I think I’m just being stubborn and refusing to admit this series has grown so much and for so long just like the characters. It’s weird that after so many books you really do feel oddly related to the characters and I think my mind refuses to accept little Sessah is already grown up and it’s his turn for a mate. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣
I always love a revisit to the infamous fruit cave. It was the perfect setting for Sam to reconnect with this adult Sessah and accept him as her mate. I really loved her storyline and background. It made so much sense regarding her character as it’s taken until now to finally understand why she was so happy to land on an ice planet. This was exactly the love story Sam needed and I’m glad she has finally found her happy place.
I’m not sure why I didn’t love Sam being such a badass because she really was. 🤫 But in my defense I think it’s only because Sessah kept getting his ass kicked and it reminded me how ultimately gentle and vulnerable the sakhui on the planet are to outsiders. Sessah’s people know only kindness and working together. Things like murder, assault and especially rape are unheard of in the tribe and so Sam had to be the one to make tough choices. However in her character arc she needed this giant moment of triumph to overcome her fears and find peace once again. I never thought that the ‘packages’ landing on the planet could be so threatening and now I’m hoping that’s not going to be a recurring thing. As always I am beyond eager to see what’s next and while I don’t love the time jumps or admitting the series is getting closer to an end, I am ready for the next one!

Hot damn Sessah finally got a book. I adore, adore him, and let’s be honest he’s the sweetheart of the planet, and someone landed him…jealous. Sam is a lucky one indeed. Sessah comes back to the beach after being home for four years…and apparently a lot has changed, he is all brawny man now, and still the same sweetheart with a heart of gold. Sam starts to resonate first, and as soon as she does she is trying to get to fruit cave by herself. And that’s when Sessah is asked to go after and make sure she is safe. Of course Sam tries to fight it, and Sessah us supportive, but who can fight against all the adorableness that is Sessah…nobody, that’s who. It’s like fighting a battle you can’t win, because he is like an adorable teddy bear, no matter how big and brawny he is, he is still him.

Safe read, with a sweet couple. I felt these two really went together, he was definitely the calm to her storm, they were just meant to be. There are a few wtaf moments, actually some really big wtaf moments. Great storyline, and can’t wait to read Daisy’s book next. Epilogue and hea. I can never ever get enough of this series, each book is always so different, and there are so many personalities, there is someone for everyone, or a couple for everyone. Fantastic book crack series.

Psst…always, always read the Author’s notes at the end, she gives you additional information on the book and series.
Psst, psst….Liz is still my favorite.
Psst, psst, psst…Ashtar is still a badass, and now he has mini badasses.

The book was mostly boring. Flat characters with no real personality behind them. What's Sessah's personality besides being achingly sweet? I honestly can't tell. They're a lot of books with mean, borderline violent H that treat h like crap, well this book has a polar opposite problem, and unfortunately it makes the characters entirely unexciting because they don't feel like real people. Same goes for Sam who doesn't have much going for her in personality department other that having a traumatic experience. I probably would've given 3 stars, but right toward the end there was something that made me really uncomfortable and bumped the book down. It's Daisy's accident. I take it the author didn't really wonder about burn victims struggles with self-image when she decided to use the horrific accident as some kind of teaching moment for Daisy regarding her fixation on her looks. It's perfectly fine to write about burn victims or any person who isn't average high, average appearance and average everything, but using burn accident in such context is just so insensitive and aweful. It's like writing about a person who's always eerily happy and who than gets depression as some kind of f*cked up karmic lesson. Seriously? I obviously don't think malicious intend behind it, but nevertheless I'm dissapointed at the level of thoughtlessness.

Sam + ???

It was lead up for her partner to be a surprise, so I won't ruin it. I was (very pleasantly) surprised!

This one was so exciting, and incorporated something brand new on Not Hoth, I'm interested to see how this may play out in the future, or if it remain one of Sam's secrets.

And I love see what new sexy time act is incorporated in her books, it feels like she is always trying to change up the scenes and incorporate something new. This book's sexy acts feature a hand stand and horns.

And I LOVE the set up for the final 3 couples! It could have gone a different, more predictable route and it didn't and I'm so happy! We get a 3 year time jump which is fun to see the babies, but sad when you think these people have been sadly single for 4 years around all the couples and babies!!

TW: RD has a write up before the book starts if you want more details, as far as I know her audios don't include her warnings. Stalking, Domestic Abuse, Murder (kind of), Threatening of Sexual Violence
