Once Upon a December

Rate this book
A one-of-a-kind Christmas market offers holiday magic in the new romance from the author of The Kindred Spirits Supper Club.

With a name like Astra Noel Snow, holiday spirit isn't just a seasonal specialty--it's a way of life. But after a stinging divorce, Astra's yearly trip to the Milwaukee Christmas market takes on a whole new meaning. She's ready to eat, drink, and be merry, especially with the handsome stranger who saves the best kringle for her at his family bakery.

For Jack Clausen, the Julemarked with its snowy lights and charming shops stays the same, while the world outside the joyful street changes, magically leaping from one December to the next every four weeks. He's never minded living this charmed existence until Astra shows him the life he's been missing outside of the festive red brick alley.

After a swoon-worthy series of dates, some Yuletide magic, and the unexpected glow of new love, Astra and Jack must decide whether this relationship can weather all seasons, or if what they're feeling is as ephemeral as marshmallows in a mug of hot cocoa.

Astra is ready to soak up the holiday during her annual trip to Julemarked. Especially when she hits it off with local Jack. But what Astra doesn’t know is that Jack and the holiday market is in a magical alley that defies time. Soon they’ll have to decide whether their relationship can last or if it’s just the result of some Christmas magic. A fun read!

Such an amazingly inspirational, heartwarming, feel good Christmas romance makes you giddy, lighthearted, see things from bright side by experiencing full holiday spirit!

The main characters’ names are truly epic: Astra Noel Snow and Jack Clausen who meet once upon a December at a magical Christmas market.

Astra who is heartbroken after her divorce, deciding to start from fresh, enjoying her freedom and Milwaukee Christmas experience!

On the other hand Jack Clausen stuck in the same place: a magical Christmas market where he meets the same girl at each year keeps forgetting who he is at each year!

But this year, things will be different. Jack gives himself a chance to discover the outside world with the guidance Astra, learning to leave his comfort zone to realize his misses opportunities.
What if their relationship may last more than one month, what if they have a slightest chance to spend years together?

This book is a soul healer. The chapters about friendship, family ties and beautiful depicted Milwaukee scenes made me swoon!

I was so close to give four stars but I didn’t like surprise baby plotline so much!

Overall: Amy E. Reichert is brilliant story teller who combines different genres perfectly. This adorable romance meets magical realism and fantasy!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.

3.5 stars, cute holiday romance

This must be the year of the magical, quirky holiday romance novels! I really enjoyed this journey to a place where it is always the holiday season.

Jack Clausen lives in the Julemarked--a magical alleyway filled with holiday themed shops that shows up in various places around the world for three weeks and then magically jumps to another location where it is December yet again. He loves his job as a kringle maker, but when he meets Astra Snow one year in Milwaukee, he is smitten. Unfortunately, once the magical place disappears, the people forget about it until they discover it again. After many return visits, Astra makes a date with Jack and when he doesn't show up, she starts to investigate. Can these two find romance despite differences in time?

I am sad to admit, that it took me WAY too long to puzzle together exactly how everything worked with the Julemarked (and can I just say, that I hate that name, it's too close to the vape pen manufacturer). I was so confused and that really detracted from the story for me. Once I finally figured it out I was able to relax into the story. I also detested how much of a doormat Astra was around Trent and thought it took her too long to grow a backbone. Librarians are not that poor that they cannot afford an attorney to fight for custody of a dog.

Other than those things, I loved Astra's friendships and how they all relied on each other. I liked how both Jack and Astra learned how to compromise and adapt to their differences. The growth of both of their characters was endearing and I was rooting for them to be able to be together.

If you're looking for a holiday romance that's a bit different, then Once Upon a December will hit the spot. Oh, and you'll be googling Kringle recipes by the time you're done.

An odd romance, but a very cute one. Astra, a librarian recovering from an awful divorce, loves to visit the Christmas market in the city every year. And every year Jack is there at the bakery waiting for Astra to visit, the problem is she never remembers him (because of Christmas magic). But this might be the year she finally does, and Jack will get the chance at the woman of his dreams.

I enjoyed this romance, it was very cute. I’m not huge on the holiday romance trope but wanted to give this book a chance. It’s one of the few times I’ve read a librarian in a romance book where the author didn’t get the entire profession completely wrong and that was to refreshing to read. And the romance between Jack and Astra was unique and fun, I just felt it dragged on a bit too long and could have been a little bit shorter. There were some last minute dramatics I didn’t care for and I think the book would have been perfect without them.

ONCE UPON A DECEMBER was one of my favorite Christmas reads of 2022 so far! So cute! ❄🎄🎅

Astra Snow visits the Milwaukee Christmas Market every year and buys kringle from the local bakery. She dreams of a man and has a collection of gnomes, but can’t remember where they came from. She’s going through a divorce from jerk of the year Trent, who is using their dog to make her life miserable. Jack Clausen lives in the magical world of the Julemarked where he interacts with people every year at Christmas, but then like Cinderella, a magical clock winds down after Christmas and he and his family are trapped inside until next year. He can remember meeting Astra year after year but magic makes sure humans forget his kind. So of course they fall in love and have to figure out how to be together. This had a lovely romance, so much Christmas cheer, delicious bakery descriptions and a cute dog. It was everything I love reading in a Christmas book and I hope there will be a sequel or more books like this! 5/5 stars.

What an absolute delight...The wonder of Christmas and all the magic that goes with it comes to life in this book. Christmas markets have become more and more commonplace, but in this story, there is an extra "Julemarked" that magically appears as part of the Milwaukee Christmas Market. People discover it, but only those meant to be a part of it remember it. Astra is one of those people, however, life isn't always easy and she and Jack must figure out if what they have is real enough to survive across the magic. With a cast of smart and entertaining characters, this is a "must read", "feel good" book. -Jen K.

4.25 - What a wonderful holiday story - loved it! Kinda like a holiday version of "Brigadoon". I enjoy the magic realism genre, and Amy Reichert is really good at it. This story is charming, heart warming and has a great female MC. Highly recommend this romance about two people from completely different worlds.

This is a sweet romantic comedy with a Christmas twist. I really liked the premise and I’m not sure if it was the rushed romance or what but I didn’t feel the characters were as developed as they could have been which prevented the magic from fulling settling in for me. The premise of the book is certainly a little strange and needs a bit fo twisty thinking to grasp. The Julemarked is a mysterious alley containing a village of people from whom it is always Christmas. They spend each December in a different Christmas market and when they leave no one remembers them. Astra from the outside and Jack from Julemarked have met many times but Astra has no memory of it. When they meet this time they make a connection that changes that, but can love be a bridge between worlds? Overall it was a fun book and it would make a sweet Christmas special movie. I gave it a 3.5 stars rounded up cause ‘tis the season.

Sweet in so many ways!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was totally not expecting this book! Reichert has crafted a romance for the ages, literally. What a special treat.
A bit of a fanciful story, we have been whisked away to a neverland of whimsey and treated to love unlike any we have experienced.
Imagine living in a world of baking and Christmas markets all year long, then meeting someone you have a connection with, only to be not able to date her or meet her outside in the world as we know it. Frustrating!
The author has put on her Christmas hat and conjured up all sorts of interesting details and sweetness that will have you wishing for the holidays! Spiked hot cocoa and holiday hats are galore!
The characters are fun and a delight to read and grow with too. Jack is my favorite as his heart is pure and sweet!
For a story that is a delight all the way around and a beautiful clean romance, Once Upon a December is a story that you will fall for with that sweet ending!
Four and a Half Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭒
Once Upon a December by Amy E. Reichert is a magical, entertaining romance that will warm your heart for the holiday season.
Story Recap:
Astra Noel Snow has just gone through a difficult divorce, but the one upside to the divorce is spending more time with her group of friends. Every Christmas, she likes to go to the Christmas Market in Milwaukee with her friends, and now that it’s the beginning of December, she gets to go again, and this time with her friends.
Jack Clausen has worked the Christmas market his entire life in his family’s bakery. He and his family call it the Julemarked, and he’s known all the shopkeepers of the Julemarked his entire life. The secret to the Julemarked is that it goes on every month in a different part of the world. It’s always December for the magical Julemarked, and Jack has no intention of ever leaving, the market, his family, or his friends. But, when he sees a cute woman come into his bakery he’s instantly smitten, but he knows, the market will disappear after Christmas and he will go with it.
My Thoughts:
Once Upon a December has everything I want in a holiday book. A setting of snow, holiday spirit, romance, and a bit of magic. I loved the premise of this story, where Jack works in a Christmas market that moves around the world, and he keeps inside the market that is full of family and friends. Jack is happy with his work and never wants to leave and visit the world outside of the market.
Astra has just gone through a divorce and her self-esteem is low and she’s vulnerable. But, Astra is lucky because she has a caring friend group, who rally around her and help her through this tough time. I just loved her friends, they are fun characters who give the story a bit of humor and help Astra grow after the divorce.
Jack is a skilled baker and the treats he makes in the bakery sound delicious and made me hungry. The people who work with Jack in the market are also wonderful side characters who support Jack and want the best for him.
Recommendation:
I highly recommend this warmhearted story to anyone who enjoys Christmas romance books. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Once Upon a December was a really sweet holiday novel. It’s a romance (closed door), but the greater storyline is about Astra’s journey to find happiness. I would classify this book as more women’s fiction, with a strong romantic subplot.
Things to look forward to:
- An outstanding friend group. I LOVED Astra’s girlfriends. They are there for each other through it all and there’s never a question about their loyalty or what they will do for the other. I appreciated that in the end, Astra stayed true to this love.
- The love across time aspect. The book flips between the past and present and it was interesting to see how Jack and Astra’s relationship developed over the years. Yes, it’s instalove, but also in a way it’s not. There’s definitely a destiny/fate aspect at play, which made some of the decisions easier to accept. I loved the nisse that Jack carved and gifted to Astra. It was such a cute detail.
- Kringles. This book left me craving a Kringle (or ten). I’m not near Wisconsin, so I need to try and hunt one down.
- The Magic. I loved the cozy and homey vibe of the Julemarked and though I still don’t fully understand how it all worked, it was such a unique and imaginative idea. I loved all the different punny shop names in the alley as well.
I would have preferred if Astra’s ex-husband Trent hadn’t been such a big part of the story and honestly, it annoyed me what a pushover Astra was in the beginning. I understand it was part of her character arc to grow and change though. I also felt like the pacing overall was on the slower side. Some parts, like the running of the bakery and Astra’s job, were overly descriptive and made the book feel unnecessarily long. The ending was a bit rushed, but I loved how it all tied together. There is a trope in the novel that isn’t my favorite, but I appreciated that that surprise didn’t truly factor into either Jack or Astra’s decision to stay or go.
I read and listened to Once Upon a December and the narration by Sharon Freedman was wonderful. She’s a new to me narrator and was perfect as Astra. I did sometimes have an issue determining which character was speaking when Astra’s friend group got together, but overall this was a really enjoyable listen. If you enjoyed Amy E. Reichert's last book, The Kindred Spirits Supper Club, you’re sure to enjoy this one as well!
Having loved The Kindred Spirits Supper Club, this was one of my most anticipated holiday romances of the year. Following a magical Christmas market that repeats the month of December every four weeks, this certainly had a whimsical setting filled with beautiful descriptions and quaint shops. You'll definitely develop a craving for a Kringle after finishing!
I will say, along with the magic system, the romance was incredibly unique. With fate continually leading them back together in Milwaukee, Astra and Jack have been acquainted for fifteen years. But by living in the outside world, Astra has practically zero memories of the handsome baker from the market.
With a race against time before the market disappears again, it was a lot of romance development crammed in at once. The glimpses of their interactions over the years were cute, but they were very, very brief—I found it difficult to believe their immediate, deep connection in present day. By the end of the book, I still didn't feel these two truly knew each other. I wish I loved this one more.
the vibes were great, I loved the Christmassy feeling of it but the ending was not it 😭 the main character is 38 but is so immature I sometimes couldn't believe her actions tbh
the romance wasn't believable for me, we didn't really see it develop on page and the "magical realism" thing completely didn't match the tone of the rest of the story
babes I was so bored during this bad boy. I was only 30% of the way done with it and I just couldn't do it anymore. Jack (i think that was the love interest's name) had the personality of a wet piece of cardboard. If he was a spice, he would be flour. Literally, no one had a personality. I was gaslighted several times on different occasions that anyone was interesting at all. Also, other than the first paragraph, there are like no super Christmasy things. When I am reading a Christmas romance I want to be bonked on the head with some goddamn mistletoe. I want the author to stick a candy cane up my ass it has so much Christmas. Bestie goes scuba diving and goes to Florida of all places (who would ever voluntarily go to Florida is beyond me). I am just not in the mood my dude.
Every year in December, the Milwaukee Christmas market is the prime destination for Astra Noel Snow. Especially when there’s a handsome baker there saving the best and most delicious kringle for her. But, unbeknownst to Astra, the handsome baker Jack Clausen has more secrets that he simply wants to share with her. Especially when even though they don’t know each others’ names, there is something about their connection that seems to be lingering in the air.
I gave Once Upon a December four stars, really enjoying the Christmas atmosphere and the magical realism that this book had. I liked the idea of the… [ continue reading ]
Review:
This book gets major props for being one of the most unique holiday books I’ve ever read, for sure. The fantasy element was an interesting premise, and the traveling Christmas market sounded so lovely.
I also really liked the friend group that Astra was part of. They all loved each other and were there for each other with no questions asked. Even when Astra told them that she was falling for a guy in some kind of time pocket, they believed her without question. They all took care of each other and it was great to see.
What was not great…was the romance. The flashbacks weren’t enough to convince me of this great love that Jack was still holding onto 15 years later. It just felt very instalovey. I would have liked the book a lot better had it not been a romance and concentrated instead on the female friendships.
Once Upon a December is a holiday romance with magical realism.
It follows both Astra and Jack (3rd person POVs). It's mostly set in the present. But we do get to go back to previous Christmases.
The story takes place in Milwaukee where Astra works as a library director. I absolutely loved her dog Bernie. And her friend group was amazing.
Jack is a baker who lives in the Julemarked, where time works differently. It's a place outside of time, where every day is December. He visits Christmas markets throughout the world. But his favorite one is Milwaukee because of her.
Before the first chapter it says: "Once upon a December, a girl met a boy, but she didn't remember." This line hooked me right from the start. And I was completely mesmerized by this incredible story. Seeing their various meetings throughout the years made me much more invested in their story.
This is a wonderful holiday romance. It is an emotional and beautiful story. This is definitely one of my favorite books of 2022.
She’s met the perfect man. There’s just one catch.
Astra Noel Snow loves the holidays. Even though her job as a library director is challenging and sharing custody of her dog with her manipulative ex-husband is stressful, nothing brings her more joy than spending time with her college roommates, getting the Yuletide spirit at Milwaukee’s enchanting Christmas market. (And the handsome baker who always saves some of the best kringle for her is a definite bonus.)
Jack Clausen and his family live in the Julemarked, where it’s Christmas all year-round. Once the holiday is over, those who run the market prepare for the next holiday every four weeks, and they never know where in the world the magic will take them. But Jack loves the years they wind up in Milwaukee, because he hopes he’ll see her—the beautiful woman who comes into the bakery each time, with whom he feels a special connection.
When Astra and Jack share a romantic evening, Astra feels like she’s found the man she’s been looking for. But when she returns to the market after Christmas, she finds no trace of it—or Jack—and her friends only have foggy memories of the whole thing. Did she hallucinate a magical Christmas market AND a handsome man?
When the next Christmas rolls around, and the market returns to Milwaukee, Astra learns the truth about the Julemarked and Jack. Is she willing to give up everything in her life to live with Jack in the market? Or can he sacrifice his family and the only life he’s ever known to live outside with Astra?
A sweet love story? A handsome baker? A magical Christmas market where time runs differently? This was definitely a story full of holiday spirit. Sure, you have to suspend your disbelief, but isn’t that part of the holiday magic?
Much thanks to @PRHAudio for a complimentary audiobook and NetGalley and Berkley Romance for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
I absolutely adored this magical second chance at love holiday romance featuring Astra, a recently divorced 38-year-old librarian and Jack, a baker who lives in this alternate dimension Christmas market world that only intersects with the real world over the holidays. Jack and Astra have encountered one another several times but it's only this year that Jack finally learns Astra's name and takes a chance on love.
Together these two have to decide whether a life together is worth taking a chance on and which one of them will sacrifice for the other. I loved the antics with Astra's dog and ex as well as the strong female friendships. I also really enjoyed that Astra was a middle aged FMC and still deserving of love and a happily ever after. Perfect for fans of books like The dead romantics or Just like magic and great on audio narrated by Sharon Freedman!
This is the second holiday book I’ve read in the last few weeks that had magical realism and I have to say, I’m into it. The holiday season is already magical on it’s own so add in a little real magic that’s grounded in reality and I’m 🫠 One thing the authors books always have is amazing descriptions of food and this was no exception. The treats Jack makes at the Julemarked sounded delicious and I needed many snacks while reading this. There was something so pure about this one, maybe it’s because Jack himself was such a pure and innocent character but this was sugar sweet. If you’re looking for an adorable and whimsical holiday read this was an enchanting delight sure to give you all the Christmassy feels.
“The magic protects itself. Trust the magic,” Jack said.
“Is it magic? Or something we just don’t understand yet?”
“Aren’t they the same thing?”
Once Upon a December is another example of how soft, dreamlike and cozy Amy E. Reichert’s writing it.
This story follow Jack and Astra as they met, repeatedly, every Yule they can at Jacks magical Christmas market.
This story may not be for everyone but I loved the uniqueness and wholesome vibes. I loved Asta’s fierce love her for friends and her dog too! Her independence was a highlight here for me. Jack also learns and grows during this story: overall I’m glad I read this book this holiday season.
This book was giving me Neverland vibes, but with characters I loved more than Peter and Wendy.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Astra Noel Snow meets Jack Clausen at the Milwaukee Christmas Market and the rest is history.
Astra Noel Snow is a library director in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She and a group of friends visit the Christmas Market every year. One of Astra’s favorite stops is a bakery that serves up the best Kringles around.
Jack Clausen lives in Julemarked and is a baker of the fabulous Kringles Astra loves. But you see time works differently in Julemarked. It is always December in Julemarked and the residents travel the world to a different Christmas market each December 1st. Jack’s favorite is Milwaukee because he has fallen hard for Astra.
“Once upon a December, a girl met a boy, but she didn’t remember.” With a prologue like that, I was hooked from the start.
I loved everything about this book. It was just what I needed to enrich my Christmas spirit.
Ms. Reichert has created a wonderful cast of characters.
Astra Noel Snow, what a great name and she embraces the holiday fully. Plus she shares her joy with an annual getaway with her college roommates. They are a fun group that tries to be there for each other through thick and thin. Astra shares custody of Bernie, a giant loveable Bernese Moutain and Lab mix dog, with her ex-husband. She really hopes one day he will give her full custody and she may have a few ideas on how to make that happen.
Jack Clausen has a great family. Together they own and operate Kringle All The Way, the only bakery in Julemarked. He and his brothers have worked out quite an assembly process to make all the kringles they sell. Living in Julemarked the family remains as close as ever,
The author has also created a magical place in Julemarked. Such a clever idea. Her descriptions paint such a clear picture of this place that is only there for days and not necessarily every year. She has placed it in an area of Milwaukee that is well known where a lot of people congregate too. The landmarks make the story feel so real. It is so easy to imagine the market with the Julmarked offshoot.
Once Upon A December is a magically delightful read. It is a love story but it is also about strong family ties and epic friendships. Heartwarming and unique, funny and emotional, romance and magic, Ms. Reichert blends it all together to make a very entertaining story with an unexpected ending. I think it would make a great Christmas movie! The only thing that could make this story better was if it came with a Kringle!
Once Upon a December by Amy E. Reichert is best enjoyed on a dark and dreary winter weekend with a Danish pastry and a steaming cup of hot chocolate.
Thank you #NetGalley @BerkleyPub #BerkleyBuddyReads for a complimentary e ARC of #OnceUponADecember upon my request. All opinions are my own.
Astra Noel Snow and her friends enjoy a traditional visit every December to the Milwaukee Christmas Market. This year she is recently divorced and is looking for some extra fun. Jack Clausen, a handsome man who works at his family’s bakery, saves her the best kringle. Their meeting is magical (no spoilers) and after a few dates, some Yuletide magic, and unbelievable complications, Astra and Jack must decide if their relationship can work. I hesitate to say more about the plot and circumstances because I think this one is best discovered for yourself.
What Works
* You’ll need to suspend disbelief to really enjoy this story! I knew going in that the story involved a great deal of magical realism which, honestly, isn’t my favorite. However, I needed a cute story at the exact moment this arc became available and I decided to take a chance. I’m happy I did because it was exactly the right, light read at the right time.
* I read this in October and not December and it still worked for me! I’d rather read a Christmas story in October than a spooky ghost story or thriller. I know I’m an outlier!
* I enjoyed thinking about Astra and Jack’s peculiar and complicated circumstances (no spoilers) and how it would all work out. I can’t say more about the plot because I enjoyed going into it blind and I think you will as well.
* I love the friendship themes! Astra is fortunate to have a small circle of supportive friends. Their relationships add extra layers of enjoyment and interest.
* Likable characters!
* Oh my! All the food assaults the senses! I’m ready to fly to Wisconsin this Christmas for a delicious Danish kringle (their official state pastry) and a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Have you ever enjoyed a Danish Kringle?
Lovely themes include second chances, romance, taking risks, friendship, and family.
Keeping in mind that suspension of disbelief is required, this magical and warmhearted Christmas story might be just the HEA rom-com you’re looking for on a dark and dreary winter weekend! Fans of light women’s fiction and (closed-door) romance will enjoy this charming story.
