From National Book Award finalist Adele Griffin, an insightful and warmhearted story of two very different women who make an unexpected connection when one decides to carry a baby for the other.
At I'll Have Seconds, a high-end fairytale vintage dress shop in Manhattan, Nora Hammond loves nothing better than pairing a rare find with the perfect client.
At home, Nora grapples with the bleaker reality of enormous debt, a tiny apartment, and ever-dwindling hope that she and her husband Jacob will have a family of their own.
When socialite Evelyn Elliot charges into Nora's life, the women spark an immediate connection, and Nora is jettisoned into the heady whirl of New York's moneyed elite. As Evelyn's stylist and confidante, Nora needs to learn all new rules of engagement for the uber-wealthy. But it isn't until Evelyn decides her next cause is to carry a baby for Nora, that these rules― and this unlikely friendship―are tested.
A contemporary story that celebrates alternative routes to family, The Favor is an incisive examination of what it means to long for a child and what relationships cost us―and what they're worth.

I really liked this book a lot but it wasn't what I was expecting based on the blurb. Initially, I thought it was going to be a book about being a surrogate, and it was that, but what it's truly about is friendship, especially of the female kind. I loved how the friendship between Nora and Evelyn showed how there was an inequality of power in this relationship. It started off as rich man/poor man but became so much more than that after Evelyn begins to carry Nora's baby.
I liked how the author handled the subject matter of infertility in a sensitive manner and how well researched her information was. This was a genuinely unique way of telling a surrogate story and I liked how the author mixed in the social media aspect into the plot as well. It just goes to show that we never really know how the other half lives.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
Who doesn’t need a wealthy, eccentric friend like Evelyn? Her wealth is old money living a lavish lifestyle among the influential and infamous! When she walks into “I’ll Have Seconds” high end vintage shop, she meets Nora. Nora is blown away by everything about Evelyn and their friendship blossoms as she becomes her stylist and confidante. The shop has history with the vintage items costing thousands of dollars. Nora lives as a polar opposite in her simplistic lifestyle with her husband Jacob. They have suffered ups and downs with infertility leaving a mountain of debt. When Evelyn throws money right and left to Nora for nonsensical items and jobs, she realizes their friendship is more about Evelyn taking her under her wing out of love. The story has a whimsical Cinderella story, but Evelyn takes it to another level when she offers to carry a baby for Nora and Jacob. A beautiful women’s fiction delivering so many laughs and tears. I was intrigued by Evelyn’s personality and her compassion, yet she keeps the story on edge with what she is going to do next. Kudos to this gifted author who has two books as National Book finalists. Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for this ARC sin exchange for my honest review.
This new release had me holding my breath for hundreds of pages. Would the flamboyant and generous uber-rich Evelyn, the surrogate and star of "Evy Does It" keep her word to hand over the baby to Nora and Jacob, the bio parents unable to carry to term. The lifestyle contrasts make a fascinating contrast. Then there is the haute couture and a mini mystery. My favorite character was Nora's stepmother Gabby. If you also read this one, you will know why. Absolutely LOVED this on audio.

The Favor by Adele Griffin was a most engaging and enjoyable book. I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by Kristen Sieh. Her performance was well done as she was able to easily transition from one character to another. The Favor took place in New York City. It was well paced and the character development was great.
It was minutes to closing time for Nora Hammond. She was ready to spend the evening with her husband, Jacob. Nora worked at a high end vintage women’s clothing shop. She had just put the closed sign on the door of the shop she worked at when she noticed a desperate woman customer trying to enter the shop. Nora debated for several seconds whether or not to let the woman in. After much debate, Nora decided to let the woman enter. The woman was noticeably well dressed and confident. She knew exactly what she wanted and Nora was successful at locating the vintage finds Evelyn Elliot was searching for. It was an impressive sale. Nora had not made a sale of that magnitude for some time. That encounter with Evelyn was about to change Nora’s life forever. Nora was about to step into another realm, a world where the rich and affluent lived. Evelyn Elliot was to become Nora’s friend. The two women would touch each other’s lives in ways they never could have dreamed of.
Nora was happily married to her husband Jacob. From the start of their marriage, they planned to have several children. Their attempts, though, had been unsuccessful. Even their attempts at IVF had been unsuccessful. They were now still childless and had accumulated a lot of debt. It forced both Nora and Jacob to be very thrifty. They had hoped they would have been able to purchase a house by now as well. Their apartment was minuscule. Despite all of their problems they had a good marriage and openly communicated with each other.
As Nora’s and Evelyn’s friendship evolved and blossomed, Evelyn decided to give Nora and Jacob the ultimate gift. Evelyn offered to be the surrogate for their child. What a selfless gesture! Or was it? What did Evelyn hope to gain from her generous offer? Did Evelyn have an ultimate motive for her decision? Could Nora’s and Evelyn’s friendship survive during the course of the pregnancy?
The Favor explored the themes of friendship, infertility, surrogates, marriage, family, wealth inequality, and parenthood. I enjoyed the characters in The Favor and continued to find myself still thinking about them long after I finished reading the book. There were parts of The Favor that had me laughing out loud and there were parts where I shed a tear or two. It bothered me that Evelyn chose to use her role as surrogate to attract and gain attention for herself. The ending, though, restored my opinion of her. I enjoyed listening to The Favor by Adele Griffin and recommend it highly.

Don't let the pink and flowery cover to fool you - technically this is a contemporary book but it feels almost like a thriller.
Nora is only half-happy with her life. She has a supportive and loving husband and a job she loves. On the other hand Nora's biggest dream - becoming a mother - is still unreachable even despite multiple IVFs. One day she meets an old-money socialite - Evelyn and before long she finds herself dazed by all the money, power and confidence of her new friend. The things between two women will only get more complicated once Evelyn will propose to become a surrogate mother for Nora's child.
The relationship between Nora and Evelyn has a delicious power imbalance and a favor from the title (becoming a surrogate mother) tips the scale even further. Nora is being swept by the current of events and she can't even react to them because she is afraid her reaction might offend Evelyn. She is entirely on a mercy of a selfish socialite who is used to act on a whim, get whatever she wants and listen only to the praise. A perfect, helpless victim. So I was clutching the book wondering what are the next antics Evelyn will pull of. Will she finally break Nora? Will she insist to keep the baby? What kind of gruesome finale can be brewing? It's a really great story.
The only thing I can complain about is that it has this bizarre moments that feel like a sloppy product placements and that it over describes the emojis and gifs that are being sent. Still a solid book.
I ended up reading this novel as a writer/editor rather than as a reader. If I had been Adele Gruffin’s editor or writing group buddy I would have said something like, look, friend. You have 3-4 really great books going on here at the same time and you need to choose because they are getting in each other’s way and if you hang onto all of them you’ll end up with a medium-good story rather than a breakout hit. There is a great potential story here of a struggling young woman with money troubles who, through the extraordinary sewing skills and eye for fashion gifted her by her late mother, becomes the stylist and dresser for a vain rich woman and what follows is a witty bitter take on the modern-day wealthy class. There is another great potential story of a struggling young woman with the same skills falling into a giddily lucrative career as a master forger of haute couture. There is at least one story of a struggling young couple who fall into a loose surrogacy arrangement with a woman whose motivations are suspicious. A couple more stories of a surrogate pregnancy leading to the loss of a child or the premature birth of a child with unexpected health challenges and how the financial and emotional strain of this development strains or breaks a marriage. All these stories were present and possible and none of them could co-exist easily with the rest so I ended up feeling the editor didn’t take the time needed to make this novel as good as it could have been.
“Babies can be a lot for the people who have them and sometimes even more for the people who don’t.”
This was an unexpectedly great and heartwarming story about two very different women who make a connection when one agrees to carry a baby for the other.
There are favours and then there are FAVOURS, right?!
What an ask!
For personal reasons, I tend to stay away from books touching on infertility but somehow this one grabbed me and I couldn’t ignore it. So, for those with aching hearts, this is a gentle read that will have the corners of your mouth turning upwards and the tears will be happy ones. Guaranteed, this book will have you agreeing that despite motherhood looking different for everyone, the love involved is the same. You’ll find that it’s more than just a book about surrogacy, it’s about how vintage connects us to past lives. It’s about friendship and the paths we forge to make a family. It’s set in a world of vintage thrifting and fashion - a unique and refreshing setting.
You will love Evelyn Elliot! What a hoot. She’s full of outrageous antics (nicknames) and had me gasping at her flamboyance and gregarious nature. Underneath her curated facade and expensive taste is a tender-hearted person who loves helping others. I enjoyed reading the interactions between these polar opposites and when they jumped into a hasty surrogacy agreement, I was hooked. I had to see if this unlikely friendship and big ask could stand the test of time or if this relationship cost too much for both partners.
The threads of friendship, honesty and forgiveness are tightly woven into this heartwarming novel that must grace your night table.
I was gifted this copy by Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
The beautiful springtime cover of this book immediately drew my interest, but it was how well the story surrounding the sensitive topics of infertility and surrogacy were handled that held my attention. I readily became captivated.
While working in a vintage dress store, Nora meets Evelyn, a very wealthy and gregarious customer. At the time, Nora and her husband have been struggling with financial and infertility issues with no end in sight. However, Evelyn quickly becomes friends with Nora and Jacob, bringing them into her sphere of money and influence. Wanting to help her new friends, Evelyn offers them the ultimate gift of being their surrogate. As soon as the tears of happiness dry, the friendship begins to dissolve into one of distrust, isolation and blame. Without a formal contract, where will their precarious friendship lead? Is there a limit to a favor or a gift that is given to a friend?
I alternately felt good and bad for each of these women and their families, while also being spellbound by the possibilities of where their decisions might take them. This is sure to be a popular book for fans of Women's Fiction.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me with a digital ARC of this charming novel to read and review.
Spoiler alert. The Favor explores the relationship between Nora, a woman who works at a vintage clothes store in New York City-- and who, with her husband, Jacob, badly wants to have a baby, and Eleanor, an extroverted socialite who first bonds with Nora when she buys out the shop. Soon Nora is living her best life running around with Eleanor, while also trying to figure out the right way into an authentic friendship:
“Obviously, nobody would call Eleanor out for being spoiled. But shouldn’t somebody let her know what might be perceived as out of touch? Wasn’t that the job of a friend?”
This “job of a friend” gets more complicated when Eleanor offers to carry a baby for Nora, and the pregnancy sets the roller coaster in motion.
The story is told by Nora, and I found her perspective really charming and relatable. Though at times Eleanor’s money and privilege could be irritating, I could also see how it was necessary to highlight the contrasts in the two women’s values when professional dabbler Eleanor sees being a “compassionate” surrogate as a great way to add content to her brand on social media.
Nora and Eleanor are both, in their own ways, very warm and big-hearted people who want the best for each other, however, the surrogacy plot emphasizes the theme of how we seek to share a sense of common values, yet often run up against the fact that we weigh these values very differently. This concept is pulled off in The Favor with humor and wisdom. I really enjoyed the light touch and immersive writing of this book, and that in the end it’s a celebration of an "opposites attract friendship? Highly recommend. Thank you Sourcebooks for an arc in exchange for my review.
What happens when a wealthy social influencer is a surrogate for a financially struggling infertile couple?
In exchange for this "favor", the socialite influencer's journey is documented on social media.
This fast-paced domestic drama featured an engaging storyline focusing on the angst and ethics of surrogacy.
I especially enjoyed the way the author "turned the tables" and put a different spin on surrogacy.
Usually, it's the infertile couple who pays a hefty sum to the surrogate mother and in this book, the surrogate mother was the wealthier one in the surrogate agreement.
Unfortunately, the book's ending was lackluster and lacked the credibility that I was seeking.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kristin Sieh, who did a fabulous job with the narration.
The Favor is a story about unlikely friendships, unconditional love, found family, fertility struggles, and surrogacy.
I appreciate the uniqueness of this book and how it was a fast read full of warmth, love and humor. I think many of the themes above can make for great conversations and book club discussions. There was a social media aspect integrated into the plot that felt very realistic in today’s age and fun to follow, and I enjoyed learning about the world of vintage shopping.
However, I did struggle with Nora and Evelyn’s friendship, especially towards the end of the book. Evelyn seemed to be phony and manipulative while Nora seemed too nonchalant about the entire surrogacy process. There was also such a big emphasis on Nora and her husband’s lack of finances, which felt repetitive and part of every conversation. Further, a lot of story centered around a famous dead poet/ perfume line I just didn’t care much about. While I know this was meant to keep the tone lighter, it made me feel more detached from the chatacters.
Nora Hammond loves working at Manhattan's I’ll Have Seconds, a high-end vintage dress shop. The only thing about it she doesn’t like is that she barely makes enough money to pay her bills. Just before closing one night, socialite Evelyn Elliot sweeps in and changes Nora’s life forever. The two women spark an immediate friendship, and Nora is jettisoned into New York’s moneyed circle simply by being close to Evelyn. Nora feels comfortable with Evelyn and shares her struggles with debt, her tiny apartment, and even her unfulfilled but desperate desire to have a child.
Their friendship is tested when Evelyn offers to be a surrogate for Nora and her husband, Jacob’s frozen embryos. Evelyn begins a viral social media and marketing campaign about each step in the baby’s gestation, and Nora’s patience is stretched to the breaking point. THE FAVOR examines the feelings of longing for a child and how relationships are affected.
REVIEW
THE FAVOR is a captivating and endearing tale of two women from opposite ends of the financial, social, and personality spectrum who make an immediate connection. The writing effortlessly intertwines the lives of Nora and Evelyn, creating a hopeful but emotionally intense story of friendship and the responsibility that sometimes comes along with such a friendship.
While I adored Nora’s quiet and sweet character, Evelyn’s character blows in like a hurricane. She is exuberant, dramatic, and commanding. When we meet her in the first chapter, she flamboyantly buys out the store’s entire collection of vintage designer dresses, spends tens of thousands of dollars, and leaves Nora with her biggest commission check ever. The chemistry between the two very different women was fascinating, and I loved how they bonded over the poetry of Frieda Bergessen.
The topics of Nora’s infertility and Evelyn’s surrogacy were engrossing. It’s a highly sensitive topic for many, but it was nicely woven into a cleverly written story.
Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks/Landmark for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Nora Hammond spends her days selling vintage fashion and antique finds in an upscale vintage shop in Manhattan. She’s beautiful, successful and happily married. On the surface, her life looks perfect. It’s not. She and her husband Jacob are drowning in debt, debt caused by treatments for infertility and failed IVF attempts. They have one embryo remaining but, with her history of miscarriages, Nora knows she cant attempt another pregnancy. Enter Evelyn Elliot. And what an entrance she makes, barging into the shop to spend thousand of dollars in a late day sale. At the end of the day, Nora, her co-worker Frankie and Evelyn sit in the store, surrounded by her purchases, and toast each other with champagne. Friendship follows and penny pinching Nora, as Evelyns’s new part time stylist, enters the world of multimillionaires with yachts, multiple homes, private cars, housekeepers and chefs. It’s a delicate balancing act but Nora is managing until Evelyn offers to carry Nora and Jacob’s baby.
The Favor blends themes of friendship, the definition of family, infertility and surrogacy against a glamorous background. The details about vintage clothing are enjoyable and add to the story. 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, SOURCEBOOKS Landmark and Adele Griffin for this ARC.
I received an advance copy of this absolutely charming book and could not put it down. It is an endearing and beautifully told story of the incredibly fraught and often difficult path of infertility and the toll it takes yet Griffin handles this subject with warmth, compassion, and even humor. Readers will travel this journey with deftly drawn characters. It is a must read!
Women's fiction about the world of designer clothes, wealthy people and a surrogacy story. Nora works in a vintage clothing store in Manhattan. She and her husband Jacob are struggling to make ends meet after spending all of their savings on fertility treatments, which didn't work. One day, super rich Evelyn comes into the store, buying thousands of dollars of clothing and taking Nora under her wing. I've read a number of stories where a rich person finds a poor person as a plaything, but this one was a bit different. As the two woman get to know each other, Nora is sometimes treated as a friend and sometimes an employee, something that Jacob is leery of but Nora embraces this type of friendship.
At a certain point, Evelyn offers to become a surrogate for Nora. This leads to the second part of the book where Evelyn becomes a social media star, posting about the pregnancy but at the same time leaving Nora out of things. Nora also betrays Evelyn's trust which causes a big rift between the two. I enjoyed the parts about the surrogacy, but got tried of the endless discussion of designer fashions and travels of the very rich Evelyn. I don't think even a page went by without discussion of some sort of vintage piece worth thousands. There were some surprises at the end but it din't endear me to either of the main characters. I liked the book but wasn't connected to the characters and I don't have a lot of interest in vintage couture. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
TITLE: THE FAVOR AUTHOR: Adele Griffin NARRATOR: Kristen Sieh LENGTH: 9h PUB DATE: 06.13.2023
The Favor is a story of two women from two very different worlds that collide through an unlikely friendship brought together by a vintage shoppe in Manhattan called “I’ll Have Seconds”. There is Nora who works at the shop whose longing to have a baby after numerous tries and much expense has come to a fruitless conclusion, and then there is the very wealthy client, Evelyn Elliot who happens one day at the shop dropping thousands and forming a bond with Nora not only as her stylist but becoming Evelyn’s confidant and friend. Through their friendship, she offers to be a surrogate for Nora and that’s when their friendship is tested.
The Audio Book was narrated by one of my favorites, Kristen Sieh and it was perfection! She captured both Nora and Evelyn’s voices and I just adore the urge rn accent - capturing it to the tee - and their personalities were evident which added to my wonderful reading experience.
This book though may be about infertility and surrogacy, but it is much more than that, the Favor is a story about what friendship is, and that glimmer of love and hope. This is an excellent book for a book club and the discussions on this book would be amazing.
I was lucky enough to get to read an early copy of The Favor, by Adele Griffin. I truly couldn’t put this one down and finished it in a weekend. The characters were written with such warmth, intimacy, and humor, they feel like old friends by the novel’s end. The story journeys down the road of fertility issues, and the hurdles couples face, not the least being the very real debt that can ensue in pursuit of the dream. We get to experience this rollercoaster which twists and turns with lively characters and high stakes, on many fronts. The story takes place in NYC, so we also get the special treat of delving into the world of vintage fashion, haute couture and high society. There is something for everyone in this wonderfully human tale. I highly recommend! Five stars.
📖 Nora works at a high-end consignment shop. Toward the end of one of her shifts, a high-energy, eccentric woman breezes in asking to try on some of their most expensive dresses. The woman, Evelyn, is an old-money socialite, and she and Nora develop a fast, albeit unlikely, friendship.
Nora and her husband live a life the complete opposite of Evelyn. They struggle financially and are having difficulty getting pregnant. Evelyn takes Nora under the wing and provides financial support for odd jobs, but it's when she offers the ultimate gift that their friendship is taken to the next level, and put to the test.
💭 I was immediately charmed by this story of unlikely friendship!! You know those books that pull you in from the first page? That's what this one did for me!
As a National Book Award finalist, Adele Griffin is clearly a talented author. With her gorgeous prose and the complexity of her characters, I was completely absorbed. Within the first few chapters, Griffin made me care about these characters and become invested in their story. 👏🏻
I especially loved the exploration of friendship and the ways money and status can complicate things.
Kristen Sieh, the narrator, was a fantastic choice for this book! Her voices for the characters (especially Nora and Evelyn) are superb 👌🏻! She really brought this story to life. 💕
📌 The Favor is out now!
⭐⭐⭐⭐💫 rounded to 5.

Thank you Netgalley and Spark publishing for this ARC of: The Favor. This book took me way longer to get into then most books and I almost didn’t finish it it. It was like being on a rollercoaster. The first 150 pages were an extremely slow buildup to a fast drop into the real story which in my opinion ended fast and quick and left me with A LOT of questions.
Nora and her husband very desperately want a child and the American dream of a family and a white picket fence life. Unfortunately, after years of trying and failed and expensive medical bills they are out of luck. Enter Evelyn; a socialite with a panache for all things fabulous and glamorous who quite literally stumbles upon Nora. A fast friendship of the haves and have nots interwoven with a designer cloak of a dead poet lead to surrogacy and betrayal. After Nora sells the cloak to get a little more of her dream things quickly fall apart. Will Evelyn’s keep the baby that’s isn’t hers from Nora, will their friendship ever recover, and can life ever be normal? After the fall out and an early delivery the book diminishes to days at the NICU, broken spirits, and ends with and uneventful conclusion. The book has a slew of characters but the main focus seems to be the cloak and not the actual favor. I’m glad I finished it but it was definitely a struggle.

This book is described as heart-warming, but I think it's more accurate classified as improbable. I listened to the entire thing, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I mean, in what world does a very wealthy socialite befriend a woman who is barely making ends meet by love bombing expensive and precious gifts and then offer to carry a pregnancy for her for free after knowing her a couple months? Yeah. In my mind there is only one reason for this, and it isn't benevolence.
I have GOT to stop trusting Scribd's algorithm of, "if you liked X, you'll like Y." Pretty sure this was recommended for people who liked "Big Swiss" and the two are in no way remotely similar or even in the same genre.
The best part is an audiobook exclusive—a canonical terrible Louis Armstrong impression. Kristen Sieh gives us just that. She goes full Yoda. She didn't have to. I listen to so many audiobooks where characters sing and the narrators read the lyrics in an unsettling monotone. Not Kristen. I had to pause the audiobook I was laughing so much. I promise it's worth choosing audio for that alone.
This was not at all what I had expected of this novel. I kept trucking through 40% of it but did not finish. Life is too short. I have no interest in or respect for today's 'influencers'. That first 40% was exactly why.
In THE FAVOR by Adele Griffin, readers are transported into the world of Nora Hammond, a woman grappling with debt, a modest apartment, and the longing for a child with her husband, Jacob. When socialite Evelyn Elliot enters Nora's life, their immediate connection propels Nora into the whirlwind of New York's affluent elite. As Evelyn's stylist and confidante, Nora must navigate the unfamiliar rules of engagement among the wealthy. However, it is Evelyn's unexpected offer to carry a baby for Nora that truly tests their friendship and forces Nora to question the value of relationships. This contemporary tale celebrates unconventional paths to parenthood while delving into the complexities and sacrifices they entail. With a touch of whimsy and heartfelt moments, THE FAVOR is a captivating women's fiction. I found the story slow at times, but Adele Griffin's storytelling prowess shone through, and brought the story to a surprising ending.
This was such a challenging book in the sense that I had to take little breaks from it to think and re-shape my vision of the world and social issues, it forced my empathy to show and grow as we read the book from the point of view of Nora, a woman that works on a vintage-like/collectible luxuries shop and yearns for nothing more than to be a mother. After agreeing with her husband, Jacob, to take a break from IVF and save up money for another round, Nora's life springs to life and excitement when wealthy and wild Evelyn shows up one day at her shop and instantly connects with her. While her marriage becomes increasingly rocky, Nora is happier than ever with Evelyn's constant attention and introduces her to her world of money and privilege, however, as time goes by, Nora starts to feel anxious about her friendship with Evelyn. While Nora starts to feel like her own identity is being split in two, Evelyn makes an offer that will solve the couple's problems: She offers to be a surrogate for Nora and Jacob's baby.
I adored Evelyn and the constant talk of fashion, that's my thing, that's my world, so I connected with her character more than anything in this book and it was difficult at times when the story delved into just Nora's and Jacob's relationship and problems, as I've, luckily, never encountered problems like having to sell a precious or sentimental item to afford a house, or afford basic necessities. I did judge the decision of Jacob of not really considering the idea of adoption and not taking into consideration his wive's feelings sometimes, he also came as rather pushy so no surprise I'm not a fan of him.
This is a great book for self-introspection and the writing flows beautifully and fast. Definitely recommend for fiction/women’s fiction junkies.
Nora and Evelyn are two women who come from very different worlds. Their paths collide when Evelyn enters the vintage shop called I’ll Have Seconds (how cute is that?) where Nora works. A woman of considerable wealth, Nora can’t believe her good fortune when Evelyn spends a literal…fortune.
Hoping to hear from Evelyn again but never quite expecting it to happen, Nora is amazed when Evelyn makes good on keeping in touch. Before long, she finds herself wrapped up in Evelyn’s elite existence, much to the chagrin of her skeptical husband, Jacob.
As time moves on, Nora and Evelyn’s bond only intensifies, Evelyn often showering Nora with generosity and gifts as a thank you for filling in as her stylist. Then Evelyn decides to give Nora the ultimate present- the offer to carry a child for Nora who has had trouble conceiving, despite trying desperately to do so. While Jacob has his misgivings, Nora feels like this might be their best shot at getting the baby they both want so much. But as the plan unfolds, both women, and their relationship with one another, are tested in ways no one could have predicted.
I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook version of The Favor thanks to @orangeskyaudio and @netgalley. A slice of life story, you didn’t really know what was going to happen to these characters. Both Evelyn and Nora make some questionable decisions, proving, in the end, that they were actually more alike than they were different. A book about unexpected opportunity and newfound friendship, The Favor is a novel that asks readers to take the journey with these women without judgment, which when you think about it, isn’t a big ask.
Thank you to Netgalley, and SOURCEBOOKS Landmark for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review
Nora works at a high-end vintage boutique in Manhattan, and one day Evelyn Elliot a socialite wanders in and ends up buying a lot of expensive clothes, and they bond over their love of a famous poet. They have an instant connection even though they live very different lives. Nora and her husband are barely making ends meet, and in serious debt from trying to have a baby that never worked out. Evelyn takes in Nora as a pet project and exposes her to the high life, and showers her with gifts. When Evelyn offers Nora the gift and being her surrogate, and making her dream of becoming a mom come true things start to change.
I think this was a very interesting exploration of unconventional ways of becoming a parent. An interesting look at what friendship means and how far someone will go to make the dreams of someone you love come true. Unfortunately I do not think it was explored to the extent it come have. There was so much more the author could have done, and I think it didn't go all the way on the idea.
A touching and often humorous women's fiction story that sees an ultra wealthy NYC socialite slash influencer offering to help a couple struggling with infertility by being their surrogate. I really enjoyed the unexpected heart in this book about unexpected friendships and the over the top kindness of a lonely rich woman.
Good on audio read by a quickly growing favorite narrator of mine, Kristen Sieh and recommended for fans of books like The new person by Loretta Nyhan. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for early digital and audio copies in exchange for my honest review!
