Charles To paraphrase, the same tech, political and social trends exposed in Makers are a large part of this story.

Perhaps i missed explanation in the book, but why rich were called Zara?

[Mega-spoiler] The two mercs who were dead-headed and scanned near the start of the book, and whose "murders" were used to justify the assaults by default on walkaway sites: I wonder if those two mercs were sent by Jacob Redwater to catch Iceweasel? It would totally make sense if so. The two mercs were Redwater's first attempt, which failed; and later he sent two more mercs, Nadie and her partner. Thoughts?

Technology made the mess, so technology will save us? Didn't someone say that was the definition of insanity, doing the same thing and expecting a different result? Just because Doctorow makes you think (for the first time?!?!?) doesn't mean he writes a good story... Who couldn't fill a page with ideas and concepts and questions and oversimplistic arguments?

I'm curious, are Walkaway and Makers set in a common world at different times, or is Walkaway a parallel world instance? I didn't see any direct clues anywhere and it wouldn't really change the story for me if it is or isn't. I could see the possible progression where Walkaway effectively picks up after Makers in the same continuity.
