Nenia Campbell
“There were many stories of girls—brave girls, foolish girls, reckless girls, pretty girls—who went into the woods searching for fortune or adventure, only to encounter a monster. Whether man or beast, the monster served as an allegory for all the things that could befall a girl who strayed from the path. If she were valorous and her heart was pure, the stories said, she could rise above being brought low by hubris.

But the stories never talked about the other girls—the ones who never came out of the woods and found themselves an unwilling bride to the venal darkness within those trees. The girls whose virtue was not quite enough to resist the seasoned allure of the wicked villain and who, as a result, found that men, like beasts, could devour the unwary, and that it could feel so good to be consumed.”
Nenia Campbell, Escape

Emma Scott
“My grief wasn’t deep or poetic. It was sinister in its simplicity. I wanted to see again and I never would.”
Emma Scott, Endless Possibility

Brenda Joyce
“He is in love with you. I read the fucking letters. And you love him. Damn you! Damn you to hell, Elysse!” he roared, towering over the foot of the bed. “You are supposed to love me!”

Brenda Joyce, The Promise

Rollo May
“Anxiety (loneliness or “abandonment anxiety” being its most painful form) overcomes the person to the extent that he loses orientation in the objective world. To lose the world is to lose one's self, and vice versa; self and world are correlates. The function of anxiety is to destroy the self-world relationship, i.e., to disorient the victim in space and time and, so long as this disorientation lasts, the person remains in the state of anxiety. Anxiety overwhelms the person precisely because of the preservation of this disorientation. Now if the person can reorient himself—as happens, one hopes, in psychotherapy—and again relate himself to the world directly, experientially, with his senses alive, he overcomes the anxiety. My slightly anthropomorphic terminology comes out of my work as a therapist and is not out of place here. Though the patient and I are entirely aware of the symbolic nature of this (anxiety doesn’t do anything, just as libido or sex drives don’t), it is often helpful for the patient to see himself as struggling against an “adversary.” For then, instead of waiting forever for the therapy to analyze away the anxiety, he can help in his own treatment by taking practical steps when he experiences anxiety such as stopping and asking just what it was that occurred in reality or in his fantasies that preceded the disorientation which cued off the anxiety. He is not only opening the doors of his closet where the ghosts hide, but he often can also then take steps to reorient himself in his practical life by making new human relationships and finding new work which interests him.”
Rollo May, Love and Will

“I know it’s crazy to believe in silly things, But you look so very pure when you suffer from your addictions…”

F. Scott Fitzgerald
“I wouldn't think of leaving college. It's just that I feel so sad these wonderful nights. I sort of feel they're never coming again, and I'm not really getting all I could out of them.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise

Avijeet Das
“She was not able to find her purpose in life. She would smile on the outside, but inside she was going through myriad difficulties. Her laughter was for the outside world, and she kept her sadness hidden deep inside her heart.

I don't know what it was about me that made her tell me about her feelings, emotions, and thoughts.

May be she felt that I could relate to her. Her feelings of loneliness. Her feelings of angst. She felt that I could understand her feelings. Among her friends, no one bothered to find out about her real feelings and emotions. Writers and poets are known to understand the perspectives and feelings of others. And I was a writer and wanderer, never staying at one place for long.”
Avijeet Das

“When her mouth touched his, it was like a blade glancing off metal—it made something dull and dark inside him briefly light up with violence before the emptiness came flooding in like a black lake.

It never once occurred to him that the reason messing around always left him feeling so angry and unsatisfied was because he was craving something else.”
Nenia Campbell Campbell, Quid Pro Quo

“Misery swims in his countenance. He’s affected by the story of my past, but he’s steeling himself, forcing his humanity into hiding in favor of whatever cold creature he’s become. “You’re asking me permission to continue being a masseuse?”

“I don’t need your permission.”

His laughter is made of coal. “Your hands will touch me and no one else, Meadow. That is final.”

I see the warm man who held me in his arms earlier. I see him right there under the surface, but there’s a layer of madness preventing me from reaching him.

Elizabeth Jane Howard
“Ich meine nur, dass man über fast alles hinwegkommt. Das ist eines der Dinge, die einfach erstaunlich sind. Das ist auch der Grund, weswegen Leute wie Hamlet so wahnsinnige Angst vor der Hölle hatten. Dass es nicht aufhört, und deswegen glaube ich persönlich auch nicht daran. Ich glaube, solange man lebt, verändert sich alles, und wenn man tot ist, hört es einfach auf.”
Elizabeth Jane Howard, Marking Time

Charlotte Lamb
“Who's the latest woman in your life, Ashley?' she retorted to avoid the question in his eyes.

He shrugged. 'At present, no one.'

She laughed. 'Do you expect me to believe that?'

“Als kind rouwde ik al. Dat mijn ouders dood moesten, vond ik onverdraaglijk. Ik maakte mezelf verdrietig met fantasieën daarover. Maar deze gefantaseerde afwezigheid van de meest geliefde mensen had altijd de bedoeling het leven te bejagen: dat het vergankelijk is maakt het wonder van het leven des te groter.”

T.K. Leigh
“I've seen this movie more times than I care to admit, can probably recite most of the lines from memory. But the kiss in the rain between Holly Golightly and Paul Varjack, once she finally realizes love isn't such a bad thing, is one of my favorite kisses of all time. So much passion. So much heartbreak. So much hope.”
T.K. Leigh

T.K. Leigh
“I've fallen for him. I've allowed him to burrow deep under my skin and into my heart. Kissing him won't change any of that, won't make it any less painful when the clock strikes midnight and I turn back into a commoner.”

Emma Lord
“Most of the things I could wish for I can't have. It's big stuff, like how I wish Poppy were still here and we weren't selling Bean Well. Or medium stuff, like I didn't worry so much about where I stand with Leo and Connie, or I wasn't one ping in my parents' inbox away from getting busted for skipping out on summer school. Or stuff that wells up in me from some place I can usually keep quiet--I wish I were old enough to do whatever I wanted, to go out and take photographs all over the world instead of the same sleepy suburb over and over and over again.
I wish I didn't feel like a problem my parents had to solve.”
Emma Lord, You Have a Match
