“You know who the best managers are?
They're the great individual contributors, who never ever want to be a manager, but decide they have to be manager because no one else is going to be able to do as good a job as them.”

“We have been careless with our pie repertoire. The demise of apple-pear pie with figs and saffron and orengeado pies are tragic losses.”

“If you look into the footnotes of the business model for Apple Computer you'll see that they actually give the computers away for free; they just charge for the inflated sense of self-worth.”

“The real ugliness lies in the relationship between people who produce the technology and the things they produce, which results in a similar relationship between the people who use the technology and the things they use.”

“Apple Computers is a famous example: it was founded by (mostly Republican) computer engineers who broke from IBM in Silicon Valley in the 198os, forming little democratic circles of twenty to forty people with their laptops in each other's garages.”

“Take that old sales pitch from Apple computers. 'Think different.' It's a nice sentiment for children, but what happens in real life? You come back proudly holding up what you found, but then people cover their eyes and scream, 'No, no! We didn't really mean for you to think different!' The truth is, if you just want to be weird on the surface, that's fine. They'll pay you handsomely as long as you go with the flow. But don't call the plan into question, otherwise they have to rewrite everything.”

“He’d found another apple as she’d gotten dressed - it was unbitten and blue, and he tossed it in time with his merry song.
“You’re staring.”
“I was just wondering why you always carry apples.” Jacks chuckled under his breath. “Trust me Little Fox, you’re better off not knowing.”

“First she needed to be sure she wasn’t being watched or followed or stalked by that deceitful, apple-eating scoundrel whose name she wouldn’t even think.”

“Juicy apple, pear, and banana,
Gooseberry ... They all speak of
Death and life in the mouth ... I have a presentiment ...
Read it from a child’s expression
If she savours them. It comes from far, from far ...
Aren’t you slowly becoming aware of something inexpressible in your mouth?
Where a moment ago were words, a flowing discovery
Is released, startling, from the fruit’s flesh.
Venture to say what your apple is called.
This sweetness, which originally condensed itself,
Spreading out, slowly in being tasted rose up
To achieve a clarity, awake and of transparency,
Resonant of opposites, sunny, earthy, of the here and now -:
Oh the experience of it, the feeling, the joy -, immense!”
― Sonnets to Orpheus

“Dressed in red pants and a red shirt with red make-up and a stem on my head, I was too skinny. Most people thought I was a firecracker, a red unicorn, or a devil with one horn. It didn’t help that my worm got smeared with red paint, so I looked like a chili pepper with a Xenomorph from Alien bursting from my stomach.”

“An Apple A Day, Keeps Death Away by Stewart Stafford
Death came knocking at my door,
He said he’d come to claim my soul,
I said I wasn’t ready yet,
And asked him for an hour or so.
"Death waits for no man!" it roared,
Adding that my time was up,
The Reaper said we were leaving,
And that I was such a cheeky pup.
I asked if he'd like an apple for the trip,
And gestured to my magic tree,
"Aye," he said, reaching up,
His hand stuck to it, to my glee.
"What trick is this?" Death howled,
"Free me, I demand, this instant!"
"Lift my death sentence first," I said,
"Never! Taking life is a constant!"
"Use your other hand to free yourself."
He tried until both hands became stuck,
"Let me live, and you may go," I said,
"Agreed!" Death vanished. What good luck!
An apple a day keeps Death away,
But in the long run, you'll have to pay,
Unless you have a magic tree -
A new lease on life, briefly.

“This Orchard Is My Universe by Stewart Stafford
This orchard is my universe,
The apples, planets aligned,
Pips form a fertile starfield,
Juice waves crash behind.
Leaves fall as dying comets,
Avian asteroids zigzag wild,
Squirrels as planetary dust,
Moles, lunar cratering, mild.
Solar storm bows and enters,
Green-fingered power dearth,
Houston's black hole problem,
This astronaut sucked to Earth.

“Apple Inc. does not allow iPhone purchasers to use the device as they wish, but as Apple Inc. intends. Dear and fundamental as our cellphone has become to each of use, almost like an extension of our personhood, we don't so much own our phone as lease it under inflexible company made restrictions. Avis is not going to let somebody rebuild a core engine during the term of the rental, right? Well, Apple doesn't want its customers so much as looking under the hood, let alone tinkering with anything.”

“I will do what I can to keep you safe. We will come out of this, Roxannah."
Wrapped in the warmth of his reassuring words, Roxannah decided that Adin was like a late-season apple. Thick-skinned on the outside, so that little seemed to overwhelm him, and sweet to the core on the inside.
"Will you do that prayer thing again?”
― The Queen's Cook

“It's a strange story in which Jesus says:
"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged! Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned.
Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven. .."
Strange, because his Father judged and condemned all mankind, because two people ate an apple.”

“It is said that disappointment poisons the heart, turning it cold and bitter. The more wounds we bear, the easier it becomes to close ourselves off.”
