“With tears of joy, I recalled Fat Mary’s role in my childhood. She had been my consoler and counselor since the day I understood I was alone in the world and had no one who loved me or wanted me. I had decided back then that I would love me, fat me, just as I was. Her role was also to safeguard the meaningful and happy moments of my childhood and bring them to me when I needed to remember life’s goodness.”

“An Italian migrant once told me that … and he said, ‘To be a migrant is both a curse and a blessing, because you will always hang between two countries.’ This is a very good country, I quite enjoy it, it’s fine, but I miss my country [Holland]. “One thing that I find very weird here in Australia is Latvians in Australia celebrate Latvian traditions by a calendar, not by the seasons as they do in Latvia. It’s a bit strange for me, everyone said a few weeks ago, ‘Merry Christmas,’ in Latvian, or maybe Winterfest, and here I was sweating like a pig saying, ‘Merry Winterfest!’ – Viktor Brenners, 2nd Generation DP”

“At some point you do say to yourself, “I’m trying to be the best version of me, what’s wrong? What am I missing as a person?” There’s no reasoning with him. He doesn’t have time for this crap…we have a facade to maintain. So shut up, put on your best Laura Ashley dress and let’s go.

“مر الفاروق عمر بن الخطاب يوما على قوم يشعلون النار لتذهب عنهم برودة الجو فقال لهم يا أهل الضوء ولم يقل يا أهل النار كلمة بسيطة قد تغير الكثير قد تجعل حب الشخص قد يأسر قلبك ... وقد تجعله يبغضه للأبد”

“Sometimes the universe gives signs, it foreshadows.
It warns. Sometimes coming events cast their shadows before.Momentously happy ones too. But sometimes those signs are just our hearts wanting something so desperately that we project them. All things said, this whole reading-the-signs business can be tricky as hell.”

“I’ve often wondered that if I could go back in time, would I make the same decisions? I think I would. After all, we all make bad decisions and some of them snowball into cataclysms far bigger than we could have imagined and beyond our control.
We still make them because they are meant to be made; they are meant to reveal who we are, to aid us in our journeys …”

“Growing up, I had three amazing dogs with distinct
personalities. One of them was a randy mid-sized German spitz called Snoopy, father to countless puppies within a one- mile radius of our home in the cantonment. No lock could keep
Snoopy in, no wall was too high. In the summer months, he slept besides his knell in the garden. His nocturnal rendezvous became the talk of town when he snuck into a fellow officer’s garden to sow his wild oats with Debbie the Doberman, who was twice his size. Snoopy was as unapologetic as my mother
was embarrassed when the offi cer’s wife came home. She feared for Snoopy’s life, she told my mother diplomatically.”

“On a smoggy spring day, the midday sun baked two California Highway Patrolmen in dark blue uniforms and a bearded dirt biker astride his Yamaha. They stood on a dirt road between the San Andreas barren earthquake faulted hills crisscrossed with biker’s trails. The sergeant stood next to the still body of Eduardo Sanchez, a thirteen-year-old boy clad in a t-shirt and oversized shorts, lying on his back with three bullet wounds and powder burns tattooed on his forehead. An astonished look captured his small immature cold face.”

“Proscenium Panther by Stewart Stafford
The actor missed his line,
Whispers from the wings,
Deafening silence hanging,
Another cue came briskly.
A pregnant pause of years,
The frozen player’s lips moved,
Offstage, a mock post-mortem,
The thespian grinned impishly.
After the audience’s first line laugh,
He racked his brain for more jokes,
Flouting the text and all the cast,
O, limelight, of hot-headed hydras.

“Dark Child by Stewart Stafford
Moondust down the fire curtain
Carried Syd to the darkest side,
Trespass became a prison term,
A non-compos mentis dark child.
From gambolling nymph with a lute,
To an imp falling over instruments,
A thousand-yard stare sucked in,
Vacant eyes drew like a black hole.
Riderless horse, a living déjà vu,
The spectral shell of our brother,
Ambled towards us at his nadir,
We wept for the shuffling stranger.

“Judith:
I didn’t want an ordinary life; I wanted more. I wanted to live by the sea, somewhere beautiful and wild, so I chose Cornwall, or did Cornwall choose me? I had only been there once in my life, but I had felt an instant magical connection, the rugged coastline pulled at my heartstrings, and the sea soothed my restless soul. It was the start of a love affair that I could not or would not ignore; all I had to do now was make these dreams come true.”

“Philip:
I have vivid memories from those early volleyball training nights. Memories of looking under the (volleyball) net at this vivacious, sparkling, smiley-faced, bright-eyed vision of female sensuality dressed in her vest top and short shorts. I could not take my eyes off her, and my memory says she smiled at me every time she caught me looking at her. Was I flirting? If I was, it was not knowingly”

“Today, sadly, Italy is still a very male-dominated society, however I simply couldn’t understand why, back then like nowadays, women were confined to the role of stay at home mums or housewives in the society I was living in. I remember saying to my parents that one day I will be a successful working woman, earning my own money, and unfortunately I wasn’t the only one girl who had received the answer “well, then marry a rich man!”.”

“My back curves over my soft belly. My shoulders are shaking. I’m broken and folded over and sobbing. My dignity dissolves into snot and dribble. I feel wretched. I'm so sick of being scared. I could howl at the moon in my misery. Looking up through my veil of tears, I see it behind a cloud shaped like a wolf's head with its muzzle raised.
Silently it howls above me.
Oh great — a cloud is mocking me. Life is actually taking the piss out of me while I’m having a breakdown. It’s not even doing it behind my back. It’s up there in the fucking sky. I must be a mess if even God is mocking me.”

“A Krakovian Conversion by Stewart Stafford
Stone columns on my grave;
Gravity no longer tethers me,
Procession for a fallen saviour,
Our charmed lives split apart.
A cuckoo among darkest eagles,
Faustian profiteer's bloody deal,
Became a phoenix dove in flight,
On the road home to my new form.
An unbroken cypher laid to rest,
A muttered debate behind prayers;
Faux Messiah, who saved himself?
Ransoms paid by a bankrupt sage?
