Death of a Christmas Mitten Knitter: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really enjoyed this first mystery. Lee Hollis, whom I will admit that I didn't care much for the first book in this series, has turned into a delightful author that I will read time and time again. I love the Hayley Powell series, and this short story gives us another Christmas with Hayley and her husband, Bruce. But it is Hayley who takes the spotlight, when she is roped into providing a pricey gift basket for the church bazaar by the local pastor. It seems her friends, Mona and Liddy, along with her brother, have been tapped as well. But there is discontent among the church ladies who knit and crochet gifts, as theirs aren't as popular, and they're blaming everyone else but themselves. Fights ensue. Then a valuable diamond ring is stolen, and everyone is a suspect. When Hayley is finally allowed to leave, she finds the body of one of the knitters, with a mitten shoved in her mouth. Now Hayley is tasked once again with helping the police to find a killer... This was a delightful story, and kept me riveted enough to read it in one sitting. I enjoy Hayley and her friends, and the strong bonds they have. Hayley is stumped with this murder, and when she finally figures out who the killer might actually be, it could cost her her life... Two Christmas Mittens: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Full disclosure: I read Ms. Cahoon's Tourist Trap Mysteries, and love them all. Unfortunately, I am not one to read fantasy, such as those with vampires, werewolves, or witches. So this is the first I have read of hers that have to deal with such. But, I love her other books, so was willing to give it a chance. I was pleasantly surprised, and am happy that I did so. Mia Malone is a caterer who also happens to be a witch, although she doesn't embrace it as much as others. When she and her friends find a dead body with a mitten nearby, no one thinks anything of it, until the mitten causes someone to fall into a coma, and will die if Mia and her witchy friends can't find a cure. Her grandmother can keep the woman alive for a time, but until then, they need to find a key item to endeavor a cure. Finding herself in strange situations, it isn't until she starts to put the pieces together that she's able to find the truth of the murder and who killed the person... This was a very good mystery, even with its paranormal elements. I enjoyed the story, and everything that it entailed, including the above. I enjoyed it so much that I might actually delve into more of these mysteries. The ending was done well, and story intriguing, and worth it all. Murderous Mittens: ⭐⭐⭐When CeCe Barton visits her twin sister Allie in Colinas, California, for a relaxing Christmas at Allie's B&B, it isn't going to be one. She meets a woman at a winery one night and by the next day the woman has been found murdered. Now she's involved in solving the murder along with a new friend named Cam who has some experience in solving mysteries herself... I have read several of Ms. Day's books in the past and enjoyed most of them. But now I will have to do something I hate to do: which is speak of the way books have turned since before. This book is definitely 'politically correct,' and I read to get away from everyday learnings, not have them thrust upon me in books, which is why I couldn't give this more than three stars. There was more than a story in this, there were things that didn't need to be in there to get the story across. I will say that I was surprised by the ending, which is always a good thing. It also introduces us to a new character, CeCe Barton, who is beginning her own series, and one of my earlier favorites, Cam, who had her own series of organic gardening (very good mystery series). It was like meeting an old friend and a new. A decent story for the most part, and worth reading anyway. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Hope Early has a good life. She's finally happy with her boyfriend Ethan and his two daughters, and she's looking forward to a large family and friends Christmas celebration. This holiday season is starting out well...for a while. But then she overhears an argument between her 'Santa', Mitty, and Ralph, a friend, which ends up with Ralph pushing Mitty. All because Ralph believes Mitty, the owner of an antique shop, sold him a bogus lamp. While Mitty denies it, there's no denying that there's a problem to be solved. Along with shopping, Hope can't help but overhear Mitty's ex-wife and new wife having their own argument, and does what she can to stop it. But there's more going on behind the scenes, especially when Hope is out caroling with her sister, Ethan, his daughters, and others -- and she discovers a dead body. Again. Now, while the lead detective, Sam, tells her to stay away, the main suspect's family asks her to help. How is she supposed to say no to friends? But will she be able to solve a murder, get her Christmas together, and do everything else on her agenda before it all comes to a crashing halt?... I have to say that if I had to do everything Hope does, I'd be a wreck. Plus, I just don't have that kind of energy anymore (alas!). It's fun to read about it, but it tires me out just thinking about it! She's a whirlwind of energy, and quite a brilliant sleuth, to boot. She's trying hard to make this a perfect Christmas, but things keep getting in the way. Things like murder and deception. Angry ex-wives (more than one). Not to mention that Hope is having little accidents -- and one big one that almost sidelines her permanently. But that's all I will say about that. She does her best to pick up clues with the help of her best friend Drew, who's a reporter. Who has his own problems that have nothing to do with murder. In fact, there's a couple of very funny scenes that surround the man. It's all worth reading. Without giving anything else away, I will say that this is a delightful Christmas mystery that you can try and find the clues yourself. They are there, but not easy to decipher. When the ending comes and the murderer is discovered, it comes as a surprise, which it should do. And leaves us wanting to read the next in the series. A very nice book for a holiday evening. Recommended. I was given a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Maureen inherited her Florida (haunted) inn from a woman named Penelope, someone she'd never met. Now settled in with the crew who came with the inn, she's more than involved with Ted, the head chef. The two are moving forward with their romance, which is pleasing her other employees. She's also looking for ways to make the inn more profitable, as she's barely making ends meet right now. While visiting her friend Aster, who owns the local bookshop, she sees that a group of mystery writers are meeting and she finds their remarks about an author who writers 'how-to' books are not flattering. Curious, she purchases his latest book and sees that it is certainly useful, and learns that this particular book was more than likely written by a ghostwriter. But when the author, Terry Holiday, is supposed to arrive for a signing at the bookshop, he never shows up. Later, Aster finds his body in the flower garden behind her shop, and tells everyone that the ghost of her husband Peter told her it was there. Detective Frank Hubbard thinks Peter's appearance is a trick, and now Aster is a suspect, along with everyone who knew Terry. With the bookshop a crime scene, Aster moves to the hotel with her cat, Earl Gardner...and the spirit of Peter, supposedly. The writers' group is now meeting at the inn, and a couple of other guests show up, along with a man who claims to be a ghostwriter, but is charming everyone around him. With a murderer on the loose, people are cancelling reservations. No one knows who to trust, and even Frank is asking Maureen for help on this case. What is going on? Can she solve a crime while still trying to find time to spend with Ted? It seems as if she'll need the help of her ghostly roommate Lorna, and Lorna's beau, a late Scotland Yard detective named Reggie. But how will she explain it all to Frank, who doesn't believe in ghosts?... This is the fourth book in the series and I have read them all. I have also loved them all. To tell the truth, I do love books with 'friendly' spirits, and especially learning about their backgrounds as well. I love the relationship between them and Maureen, and it adds to the attraction of the book. Along with her dog, Finn, who has a lively time with the ghosts as well. Maureen's efforts are not unrewarded, but she has a lot of people to sift through -- the guests at the hotel, and the writers' group -- she refuses to believe that gentle Aster could be a murderer, even if Frank isn't quite convinced. The clues that she finds are intriguing, and it isn't easy deciphering them, but I love a challenge. I will not give anything else away, and hope that I didn't give too much (basically, I expanded on what the blurb states, so there's that), but I will say that the ending left me as stunned as it did Maureen. I was hoping for a different outcome, but murderers have their own ideas, and it's never reasonable nor logical. It was a tad humorous, though. I look forward to the next in the series and highly recommend this book. I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

The Seaside Knitters Society is a close-knit group of women who get together to create different projects once a week. They are also friends -- and some relatives -- who live in Sea Harbor, Massachusetts; a fishing town that they love. When an old friend from years ago returns, Nick Cabot, everyone is glad to see him. Well, almost everyone. The mayor isn't happy, because she thinks he plans to run against her. And a local chef isn't happy because he's a bit jealous of his presence. Other than that, Nick is a welcome addition once again, and he brightens the lives of everyone there. One early morning, there's a fire and everyone seems to know whose home it was. No one is happy about it, and they wonder where's the body? Eventually, it's discovered, and it saddens those people in the town who knew and loved the residents. But why was the person murdered? The women know it was murder, and they set out to find the killer before they can strike again... Full disclosure on my part is that I have not read anything by Ms. Goldenbaum for many years. Saying that, I have not read any of the others in this series, so perhaps I shouldn't have started with this one. The reason I say that is there are far too many characters to keep track of, and their relations to each other. Yes, there is a 'cheat sheet' in the front of the book; but if you are reading the digital version, as I am, you can't easily go back and check it out when you have questions. So you have to write the characters down with all their relations to each other to refer to. It's annoying, to say the least, but I am not dumping on the author; she writes well and the story line is very good. What bothered me is the fact that someone was murdered who seemed by all appearances to be really nice and usually in mysteries, the slain person has some awful quality that we know will doom them. To add that we are supposed to feel sorry for the person who killed them, but I did not. Not a shred of sorrow on my part. I have my reasons, but murder is what it is and the reason for the killing did not make any sense to me. Other than that, I will add again that the story is written well, the descriptions of the town itself are very good, and the quality of writing is high. Perhaps I will go back and begin again with the first book in the series and have another look at the Seaside Knitters! I was given an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Emily Fyne, newly married to Detective Brent Fyne, owns Deputy Donut Cafe with her late husband's father, Tom Westhill. They've got a new special of beignets, and everyone who tastes them loves them; so, they sell out fast. Her employee Hannah is taking a break from school to work there with her older sister Olivia, so all seems well. But one day two young men enter the cafe with a tiny dog, and no one seems to know who she belongs to -- at least until another shop owner is heard calling for her. But there's been chaos already, with Emily's cat Dep taking umbrage at the dog's presence, and letting everyone know it by escaping himself. Once Dep is corralled and everything goes back to normal, Emily learns the two men -- Zachary and Joshua -- are known to Hannah, and both seem to be interested in her. This doesn't sit well with Olivia, who likes Zachary, but isn't happy that Hannah seems to favor the unknown (up until now) Joshua. Then there's another altercation at the cafe between two men and a woman, and another man who enters trying to sell 'deals' to the customers. Once Emily has the cafe back to order, she wonders if it can get any worse. It does, when she discovers a dead body on a trail not too far from her lakeside home -- along with one of Hannah's hairclips. Once she discovers the identity of the man, she wonders if Hannah or her friends had anything to do with it; even putting this idea out of her head doesn't do much good, as she finds out there are plenty of other suspects who wanted the person dead. Now she's on the trail of a killer, and hopes she can find them before someone else is slain... This is the ninth book in the series, and I have read them all. I love the story lines, and the characters, and especially little Dep, who has his own say in the murders and solving them. A pretty smart cat (but then, I favor cats and know that most of them are!). Emily is trying to prove Hannah innocent, but her detective husband Brent has to look at the evidence, and the hairclip could point to her involvement. It rankles Emily, but she knows that it does look incriminating. But Olivia didn't want Hannah to hike that trail -- for good reason -- so why was she there when she is claiming she wasn't? Now Emily is looking to find out who had the best reason for the person's demise, and she does find clues along the way, which she passes on to Brent, just as she should. It makes their life together flow easily, and you can see that they love and respect each other, which is the main thing marriage should do for people. It's realistic, and I like it. There are clues throughout, but they aren't easy to find. I didn't know the murderer until Emily did, and that's a very good thing, as I read a lot of mysteries and far too often, I discover the killer the minute they step on the page. In this one, she hid the person well, which gave an element of surprise that I truly enjoyed. In the end, the reasons for the murder were no more than it should be, as the mind of a killer is always hard to decipher, nor would I want to. What I want is what this mystery gives us: secrets, lies, intrigues, and a lot of action. Kudos to Ms. Bolton. I look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended. I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Sherry Oliveri is a multiple-time winner of cook-offs, and enjoys creating new recipes while having fun at the same time. She's been chosen for one that takes place in her small town of Augustin. Unfortunately, though, she's not able to tell anyone, because this one is different in that it's a television program that's set to air on Labor Day, and it must be kept under wraps. Meanwhile, she plays tennis most every morning with her friend Kat, who works for the mayor. She also discovers that Kat knows a member of the production team; which becomes a problem when that person is murdered, and Kat becomes a suspect. When both Kat and her mother ask for Sherry's help in finding a killer, she can't say no. But who wanted the person dead? Also, who's writing cryptic notes about the show on napkins? And is Sherry in any danger of being killed next?... I have read every book in this series and I have enjoyed them all quite a bit. Ms. Delaney gives us characters that are believable, and even more so, likeable as well. I do enjoy following Sherry's life and her cook-offs, mainly because I love to cook and bake myself. (Although I have no interest in entering any contests!) In this mystery, the notes allude to a secret that someone has which could turn the competition on its side. But who is the subject? No one seems to know, and no one seems to be the author. Sherry is suspicious of someone on the production crew, and even Kat's new boyfriend, Garrett, who is a local journalist hired to document and film it all. Tensions are running high, and barbs are being thrown, but when they go in every direction, Sherry knows she needs to focus on the three-day event if she has a chance of winning. With accidents occurring and contestants being eliminated, Sherry hunkers down and does what she does best: focuses on what's in front of her at the time she needs to. Which means the event comes first and finding a killer is next, if she can just concentrate enough... I do like the fact that she shares what she knows with Detective Ray Bease, who values her input and doesn't dismiss her out of hand; it lends to a personal relationship as well (platonic), where their friendship doesn't interfere in his investigations. Sherry also has a good support group, including her boyfriend Don, who doesn't try to change her or get mad at her for what she does. (Even as he worries, which is normal). When Sherry comes to the end of the competition, it is a surprise all around, including to me. I was as stunned as she was. It was decent, and didn't go for the 'oomph' view that television seems to go for these days. When she discovers -- as we know she will -- the killer, it was a bit of a surprise, although I knew who is was a little earlier than Sherry; but we had the clues and only needed to put them together. It was both sad and needless, but you can never get into the mind of a killer (nor would I want to -- I just love reading about them; ghoulish, I know!). All in all, this was another winner for this author, and I look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Carolus Deene is a college professor who does a little sleuthing on the side. His friend, Father John Stainer, tells him he thinks something nasty is going on in his little village of Clibburn near Kent. A year ago, a small boy died from pneumonia, but John thinks there's more too it. Now, coming again on All Hallowe'en, he's afraid more will happen and wants Carolus to look into it. Of course he agrees, and heads to Clibburn to stay with John. When he meets a man named Connor, he seems shaken because he thinks someone has taken a shot at him. Carolus presses him (gently) for more information, but Connor refuses. It is then that he has a true mystery on his hands. He's determined to figure out what it is that Connor is hiding, and if it is connected in any way to the death of young Cyril a year ago. What Carolus finds is that someone wants him out of the village, and soon. He's not easily intimidated, and he knows he may very well put himself in danger; but he proceeds with his investigation, sharing what he finds with the local police. It's interesting what you can discover when you ask people the right questions, isn't it?... This is the first book that I have read by Leo Bruce, but it is certainly not going to be the last. I found this mystery so well done, in fact, that I did not know the murderer until nearly the very end, later than Mr. Deene did, himself. It was a delight to read, especially since it coincided with the Halloween time as well. (I do love to 'read the season', as it were). Watching Carolus look for answers among the village people was definitely worth it alone. Some of them were first and foremost nasty humans that one would not want to spend time with; but there were others that were just those who wanted to live their lives. Yet all of them were connected in some way or another, even if it were only vicariously. When the truth comes out, it is definitely a terrible sight. Even Carolus was disgusted by what he found. But human nature is uncontrollable, and things will occur even if we don't like them. Evil exists. Murder does happen, and it is never pleasant. The book was a very good read, and the clues not so easy to find. But all in all, it made me respect Mr. Bruce and want to look for others he has written. Highly recommended. ...more |

After Rebecca Cuthbert's parents died in a car accident, and her fiance left her practically at the altar, she thought she had lost everything in her Montana home. But when she received word that she had a grandfather in California who wanted her to live with him, she moved to small-town Citrus Grove to help him run his antique store. What she found out later what that he had a treasure trove of Egyptian artifacts, collected by his own grandfather. And she also discovered one of them, an immortal kitten named Aneksi, who's also been much help in finding those stolen by an ex-employee. When Rebecca attends an event given by the mayor, he is soon struck down -- apparently by eating one of Luna's, her baker friend, petit fours. Now Luna is the top suspect, and has asked for Rebecca's help in finding out who killed the mayor. When Aneksi smells one of the artifacts close to Luna, both Rebecca and her grandfather are afraid that this was the cause of the death. But who would believe them? Now the three are on the hunt for the ancient artifact -- an emerald and diamond Scarab -- but who in this town has it? And are they a true killer? Or did the scarab drive them to do something horrific?... This is the second book in the series, and I have to admit that I read numbers one and 3 first, but it doesn't really matter. This can be read as a stand-alone, although there are references to the first book, so you really should read the enjoyable first one ahead of this. Saying that, I also have to say that this was just as intriguing as the aforementioned two above. Rebecca is settling into her new life and has an almost-maybe-or-not relationship with Detective Nick Devon, but their first date ended abruptly, so she's not sure. Even though he seems glad to see her, he's not happy she's around another investigation (of course, why would he be?). But Rebecca is determined to help Luna, and to do that, she must find the missing scarab. That means finding who had a motive to killer Mayor Bill. Could it be his wife? His daughter? One of his many flings? Or his business rival? The only way to know is by asking questions. Trying to step on as few toes as possible, she still needs to get answers. Even if there are those who aren't happy to see her, she knows this is imperative. The scarab must be found. And she's sure the killer has it. What follows is a most interesting story featuring an immortal cat that just purrs her way into your heart, and a protagonist determined to get to the truth, even if it brings personal danger. I hesitate to say more as to not ruin the book for others. In the end, I was a bit surprised at the murderer, as it should be, and the red herrings had me running in another direction. The climax was all it should be, and the ending gives you something to look forward to in the next book. Highly recommended. I was given a copy of this book from the author and BookSprout but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

When Shay Myers began her day, she didn't expect pub owner (and secret crush) Liam Madigan to come running to her for advice on his love life (again). In fact, she's so tired of it she sends him away, but he thinks she's just having a bad day and will get over it. But it's not the day that has her bothered. It's the visions she's been having. And when a local citizen steps in for a tea reading, Shay can't believe what she sees -- or hears. The woman thinks they might be related, even though Shay tells her it's not really possible. But the woman persists, and shows Shay an object she found among her mother's possessions. Not able to completely convince her, Shay sends her off, and then worries about what she's seen in the tea leaves. Asking the help of Liam's wise Irish Gram, she fears the worst. But then her ex-husband and his new wife appear in town, telling her they've bought a local winery that was for sale. As if things couldn't get worse, she finds they do. A friend-turned-enemy has opened a rival shop, and someone else shows up, who's willing to do her harm. Now, with visions that only spell possible doom, how can she find the truth? Then someone is murdered nearby, and she's not sure if even Gram can help her with this one... This is the third entry in this series, and I do believe it is the best one yet. While I have loved this author's other series as well, I am tending to love this one even more. I am so over tales of witches, vampires, and werewolves; but a series about a seer is indeed unique, and the story line behind all this makes it believable as well. Shay didn't always know she was one; she discovered it after her return to Bray Harbor when her marriage and life fell apart. In this book she is beginning to understand more, not only about herself, but also having ideas, with the help of Liam, of what happened to her before (I cannot say more as it will give away too much of the book). Suffice it to say, it gives an opening for future books, and also gives us a glimpse of Shay's past, not counting her Irish heritage. Finding a killer isn't going to be easy, especially once she learns her nemesis has arrived in town, and the fact that her now-enemy might be involved. It's good she has Spirit to protect her, she needs him more than ever. There is plenty going on here, not only with Halloween, but with Shay trying to keep her business open, trying to figure out what is going on with her ex, and, of course, trying to find a killer. The ending is surprising, which is how it should be; the climax is stirring, but nevertheless a tad sad. Yet there is more to come, and I eagerly await the next in the series. Highly recommended. First off, I have to say that the blurb isn't completely accurate as to the action in the book. Eoin is never suspected of anything, even though Cassidy's garden is to be behind his new restaurant. He's too busy focusing on that than to notice much of anything else. But back to the book -- There's a new gardener in town to enter the yearly local gardening contest, and the other gardeners are not happy about it. Cassidy left town many years ago, and is now a winning garden designer. Why she should want to enter is anyone's guess. But soon, an intrepid local reporter named Molly susses it out, and the other gardeners aren't happy/ When someone is killed during the competition, and vandalism occurs, garda O'Sullivan and her husband, Detective Macdara, are on the case trying to figure it out. A killer is loose, and the last thing they want is for someone else to be murdered... This is the eleventh book in the series, and I have been watching Siobhan and her siblings as they grow and create new lives for themselves. They began years ago as orphans, and Siobhan refused to allow them to separate and took on the responsibility of raising them. Now, the six each have their own lives, and she has a hard time letting go. But she discovers that time doesn't stop, not even for a killer. When the person turns up dead, Siobhan doesn't know who is involved. It could be anyone -- a rival gardener, a crew member, local merchants, or even the reporter. But where does she start to decipher clues -- if she has any at all? This book is wonderful. I did figure out a few things before our protagonist, but that doesn't matter as while reading it, it comes more convoluted and the clues are harder to find. What we have is a medley of suspects who all might have had reason to kill -- but learning the truth is going to be harder than she ever expected. She's also dealing with personal problems, but refuses to allow it to get in the way of her case. Studying to be a detective might be hard, but this takes priority right now. Even Eoin's wonderful food can't turn her away from what is going on around her. When Siobhan stumbles across the truth, she is stunned, and even Macdara thinks the answer is fiendish. But they press on and in the climax they confront who is responsible, and it's even sadder than one might think; mainly because it's a tad insane. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended. I received a copy of this novel from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Cass Donovan is an ex-psychiatrist who moved to Bay Island when one of her patients died, and her marriage fell apart. She discovered that she has strong psychic abilities, and has since opened a shop where not only does she sell items that help others, but gives both private and group readings. Her best friend Bee is trying to get Cass to start a vlog where she shows people what she does, and he's sure it will increase business for her. But Cass can't get a solid reading, and so when the weather turns, he packs up his equipment and they head back home, where Cass is slated to do a group reading that evening. It's at this popular group reading that she discovers she still can't get a full grip, like something is blocking her. She feels as if she's having trouble allowing her mind to truly open up. But Bee insists she'll be fine, and so she proceeds. During the reading however, a woman stands up and insists that 'sometimes the dead need to be left alone.' With this cryptic statement, she leaves. After the reading, a man tells Cass that he owns the old closed Twin Forks Lunatic Asylum and wants to open it as a boarding school for children. Others who are on his board, and especially his wife, want him to sell it and leave it alone. But he will only do so if Cass investigates the asylum and tell him whether it's truly haunted or not. If it is, he'll give up his plans. He tells her that he will pay her well to do so, and writes her a check. Bee thinks it will be perfect for their vlog, and so the next day they venture out. But while there, Cass definitely senses and hears something, and it's not long before they hear a shot, and look outside to see a man lying on the ground. When she discovers it's her client, she wonders why he was there in the first place. But even then her new visions don't leave, and Cass thinks she can find the murderer. But first she needs to find out who had the best motive, and if they're going to kill again... This is the sixth book in the series and I have read every one of them. I do believe that they keep getting better and better, as Cass's psychic ability gets stronger with each book. Each time I read one I declare that it is my favorite, and here we go again. This one is definitely my favorite. Cass not only finds herself investigating a murder once again, she finds herself in the protective 'custody' of Bee, her six-foot-plus best friend, who gives up working in his shop on his own schedule to watch over her. We also get to meet Simone again, whom I took a definitely liking to in the last book and am glad to see that she's back once more. But we also have the subplots involving her other friend Stephanie's new adopted son, Aiden, who is autistic; and a newcomer named Thea, who is a link to Cass's investigation, although you will have to read the book to see how. The plot was indeed suspenseful, and it kept me reading in one sitting, which is a very good sign. It means that the book kept me interested enough where I didn't want to veer into anything else. There were secrets long held, ghosts both old and new who wanted justice, and a cunning murderer who so far had been able to escape the eyes of police. But when the ending comes, the climax is gripping and when it all ends, you wish that the book would go on. I definitely loved this book and await eagerly for the next in the series. I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. Darla Damian, world-renowned psychic, is back at work after three weeks away. Three weeks during which time she's pondering whether she can trust her visions anymore. Three weeks after a traumatic event that's caused her to doubt everything now. But in her first return to work, her best friend Candace, who is also her partner in the Aurora B, Fine Crystals and More, has booked a new case for her -- one that she hopes will get Darla back on track. But Darla doesn't want to be 'back on track.' She wants to lay low and do simple Tarot readings for others, not wanting to see or feel her visions. Yet now she's presented with a missing persons case -- that just might be more than that. When a murder occurs, Darla discovers that maybe the two might just be connected. And even though she still wants to leave it alone, Candace won't let her. Now Darla is involved in what she doesn't want, and with a new homicide detective who thinks she's a hack. Can Darla find the killer? And more important, can she find her skills again? This is the first book in a new series, and as such, it shines. If you've read any of the Mira Michaels books, you'll know that Darla is Mira's older sister. (If you haven't, I suggest you run - not walk - to your nearest purchase place and buy a copy. You'll be hooked). Darla has always depended upon her psychic gifts to help others, but when something extremely traumatic occurs, and she blames herself for 'misreading' her vision, she feels that she can't trust herself anymore. Now it's up to Candace to help her return to what she does best. With prodding and trust, Candace tries to help Darla as she navigates her way into a new case, albeit reluctantly. What follows is Darla, still unsure of herself, asking questions and watching people, rather than reading them, to find the truth. Yet there is a vision or two to help her along, and she's going to have to trust herself in order to corner a killer. Because we know she will, of course... The ending is a very interesting one, and leaves us wondering what the next book will bring. As for the new detective, I'm right there along with Darla, as I'm a believer myself, (and have the proof to back it up!). The characters are believable and fully fleshed out (the main ones, at least) and we understand Darla's feelings and her angst; we also understand Candace and why she is doing what she is. The story line is riveting, and let us not forget Darla's Siamese cats, X and O, who are definitely worth reading about in their own right, trying to keep the peace between the House Cats and the Ferals -- and solving their own mystery along the way. In the end, this is the beginning to a new series that should have everyone smiling in satisfaction and waiting for the next in the series (hurry, hurry!) as Darla takes her place on your bookshelf. Highly recommended. I received an advance copy from the author and BookFunnel, but this in no way influenced my review. Lucy Hale owns her late parents' bakery in the small town of Ivy Creek. After some years away, she's finally found what she's been looking for, and is finally happy. Especially since she's marrying her high school boyfriend, Taylor, who's a police deputy running for sheriff. Only two things stand in her way of true happiness: Taylor's sister Kayla, who took some cooking classes and thinks the perfect gift would be to cater their wedding. Although Lucy is horror stricken, she can't let on and hopes that maybe her Aunt Tricia and herself can steer the woman away. The second is that Taylor has a rival, an out-of-towner who is also running for sheriff, and isn't above pulling dirty tricks to get the job. While Taylor doesn't seem too concerned, an incident occurs that angers him and is, unfortunately, causing a problem. When Lucy stumbles across a dead body, it suddenly amplifies their problems, and Taylor must step away from it, confined to desk duty. But Lucy, being who she is, decides to try and figure out who the killer is, because she's determined that her wedding will occur on time. If she can stay alive long enough to be part of it... This is the fifteenth book in the series, and I have read them all. The reason I gave four stars instead of five is because of a scene where the news shows a story that has obviously been edited. No news outlet would do this unless they wanted to get sued. Details are important. Other than that, I really enjoyed this tale, finally seeing that Lucy is going to tie the knot with Taylor. There is enough going on in the backstory to keep you interested. But just like Lucy, I don't really care for Kayla. I love cats, and cats know!... The mystery is woven well into the story, and the plot was very well done. I enjoyed this one more than the others, and that's saying a lot, since I enjoyed the others as well. I would definitely recommend this tale to anyone. I received a copy of this from the publisher but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

Dr. Susannah Shine is an ex-cop who's now a chiropractor in a small Georgia town. She's been living here happily, but then her sister Angela decides to move there with her small son Caden. While Susannah knows it will impact her life, she just doesn't know how much until there's a murder. It's not long before Angela is considered the top suspect -- the only suspect -- and Susannah needs to clear her sister's name. But when a series of events topple everything one over the other, things suddenly start spiraling, and what once seemed a slam dunk is now a slow crawl to find out the truth...and the killer... This is the second book in the series, and I haven't as yet read the first (although I do fully intend to go back and do so). I found this book lively and fun, with a wealth of characters that exude southern charm and grit. Each one has a distinct personality and are larger-than-life in their approach to it. Susannah, however, is more reserved and while she has her own schemes (out of necessity), it's her best friend Bitsy that brings the comic relief to the story. She's a force of her own. The mystery itself was done very well, and I enjoyed the plot immensely. I thought this story was well-written and carried many surprises throughout; the characters involved are believable and the descriptions of everything going on brought you into the story nicely. While this takes place at Halloween, it really isn't a Halloween story, so there's that to say about it, but it really doesn't make any difference, as we're not there for the holiday anyway, but to solve the mystery. However, that isn't going to be as easy as one thinks; we might have to wait until Susannah herself gives us the clues to figure everything out. And she does this admirably, giving the final pages the oomph it needs to put everything together and set all to rights. I was quite entertained by the entire tale, reading it in one sitting. Recommended. I received an advance copy from the author but this in no way influenced my review. Merged review: Dr. Susannah Shine is an ex-cop who's now a chiropractor in a small Georgia town. Mira Michaels is living in the small town of Pleasant Pond. She works at a local diner and has a Victorian home she's restoring bit by bit. She also has a menagerie of pets -- including her cat Arnold, whom she can talk with. Yes, with, not to. It makes for an interesting life. Oh -- did I mention she has a habit of stumbling over dead bodies every now and then? This time, she doesn't, but she gets involved anyway, because when the body of a local is discovered at a paint-your-own pottery shop, she and her partner-in-crime (and owner of said diner) Aerie, know what it's like to have your business suffer because of a nasty murder. So naturally, they vow to help her find the killer. Even if the police don't want her to. Or even if she puts herself in the way of a killer... The other little problem Mira has is that there are a few men who might be interested in her, and while she protests that she's not interested, it doesn't stop Aerie from trying to push her in their direction, hoping she'll choose one. Then there's the package her psychic sister Darla sent her; she knows she has to open it eventually. Oh, and her resident ghost Clara seems to want some attention, too... This is the sixth book in the series and I have read them all. I have to say that I am getting quite cozy with the characters, wondering what each book will find them involved in. This book is no different. Mira and Aerie are searching for someone who could have killed the young woman, but their search brings them suspects that they don't want to believe are guilty. Is it the best friend? The husband? Or even Jay's girlfriend Chelsea, who is definitely hiding something. But when another body is found, they have to rethink their entire process, and even Detective Dan is stumped and actually asks Mira to help (as long as she stays out of danger. Yeah, right). It's a fun caper of a read, with Mira and Aerie at their best; it even shows a softer side to a couple of the characters, and of course, there are a couple of scenes that has Mira beating a hasty retreat behind her personal walls -- which, I hope, we'll see pushed away in a later book. There's a lot going on here besides murder. There are clues to the murderer; you just have to look for them. And they almost caught me unawares, but in the end, I prevailed along with Mira. I just knew that no matter what, being the reader and not the character, I was safe from danger (ha). When the ending comes and the murderer is revealed, it's an interesting climax that has one wondering how it's all going to end. I can tell you that it is definitely worth the read, and Ms. Koty definitely knows her characters well! It also gives us a teaser of what we might have in the next in the series. I look forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended. I received an advance copy from the author but this in no way influenced my review. Audrey Fernsby is -- was -- the owner of Moonlight Mansion B&B in Frog Hollow, Georgia. That's before someone unceremoniously did away with her one night about a month ago. But her friend Tilly, and Tilly's friend, Sunny, don't know that. Tilly has been summoned by a letter from Audrey -- whom she hadn't heard from in years -- asking for help. Unfortunately, they've arrived too late. But still early enough to help Audrey, who's a ghost. Yes, a ghost, who has been waiting for them, so she can ask their help in discovering who killed her. The people who were there that fateful night will be once again with them for the reading of the will. And it's not going to be pretty... I usually don't read prequels (for my own reasons), but this one had me interested, and since I love the series, I thought I'd give it a shot. I wasn't really surprised at the writing, since Ms. Lyn is a talented writer; but the contents are what I found intriguing. Moonlight Mansion is described in detail, as is part of Audrey's life we don't get to see in the future books, as she's, well, a ghost. But it gives insight as well on her friend Birdie, and now Tilly. I'd love to hear more about that ocean voyage so long ago, but that's for another time. Audrey's cat Mocha has been missing since Audrey died, but shows up when the two women arrive. And of all things, loves to spend time with Sunny, which is strange because no one but Audrey could touch her. And Mocha knows who the killer is. So now the three women must try and ferret out a killer, using only their wits, which, luckily, are aplenty... This was a delightful read, and I enjoyed it very much. The ending was unexpected, and I will say no more than that since this is a short book, but worth it all. If you haven't read the Accidental Ghost Detective series, you should do so, and this book will send you on your way. Highly recommended. \ I was given a copy of this book from the author and BookSprout, but this in no way influenced my review. ...more |

When Sugar Calloway lost her job, she and her friend Dixie Spicer opened their own business. Sugar was once an editor for a large magazine, and Dixie is a baker, and they've found their niche creating cookbooks for people. They've been asked to spend the weekend at a B&B owned by one of the Abbott family, and to create a cookbook for everyone in the group. The Abbotts started with a recipe for a delicious quiche, and have continued with other recipes to create a fortune in frozen foods. But Sugar and Dixie just don't know what they've walked into... When the family gathers for an informal dinner, the only grandson, Theo, shows up with his fiancée Collette and her small French poodle, who causes havoc at the dinner table. It's apparent that the matriarch of the family adores Theo, so nothing is said. But the next morning while out for a walk, Sugar stumbles across the body of Collette, who's been killed with an arrow. Now she's up to her ears in suspects, and finding a killer isn't going to be easy, especially when you're trying to cook a murderer... This is the third book in the series, and I have not read the first two, so I was a little leery of what to expect. I did like the blurb, though, so I thought I would continue. While the book starts out a little slow, it soon gathers momentum and draws you into the story. There is a bit of background on the two main characters, but as I said, this is the third, so it's not gone into detail; yet there's enough where you don't feel left behind in what is going on with them. The women have created their business by deciding to put cookbooks together for others using recipes, photos, and stories -- which is a different background from other cozies, so that was a plus for me. When the story gets rolling, we discover that this family makes other dysfunctional families look normal. There are family dynamics behind the scenes that Sugar catches onto quickly, and she and Dixie can't wait to leave the premises. But when something unexpected happens, it makes Sugar determined to figure out what's really going on. I liked the way the tale was written, and even though it's not even close to suspenseful nor a thriller, I have to say that I honestly didn't figure out the murderer until Sugar did, which is a very nice thing. The ending was a true surprise all around; and I enjoyed the story so much that after finishing it I went and bought the first two and plan to read them soon -- and hope to see that the next in the series will be coming forth soon. Recommended. I received an advance copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review. Paislee Shaw owns Cashmere Crush, a yarn shop in Scotland. She lives with her young son Brody, her Grandpa, and their Scottish terrier Wallace. Since a pipe burst in her home leaving her with an unusable house, she's been staying in her best friend Lydia's condo. But it's the holidays, and she wants to be back in her own home for Christmas. But it can't be done until the repairs are finished -- so she'll just have to make do. So she decides to have Christmas dinner at a local hotel, and invites her friend, police receptionist, Amelia Henry, to join her. Amelia shows up with her brother McCormac, who's come from Ireland to see her. It's obvious he's more than a little drunk, it's no hardship when he leaves early. Fortunately, Lydia was able to offer incentive to the workers and Paislee is thrilled with her new kitchen. So much so, she'll be able to offer the traditional buffet feast to friends and family. But Hogmanay night -- New Year's Eve -- McCormac collapses, and everyone thinks he's just drunk. Except he's not. And now Amelia wants Paislee to find out who did this to McCormac, because she's been placed on leave from the station due to McCormac being her brother. Can Paislee find the killer? Or will it be something else that leads her to the truth?... This is the sixth book in the series and I've enjoyed them all. The first one was a tad confusing, with the Scottish dialect, but I've picked up on what the words mean in English, so it's a breeze to get through (Scotland, here I come!). There are two plots in this tale -- one, the death of McCormac, and two, the pups that he gave to his sister and family as Christmas presents. I will say no more on the subject, as giving too much away (what I've said in the beginning is done early on), and I will not spoil the book for others. Paislee tries to keep out of the investigation, but Amelia is desperate on two counts, and unfortunately, Paislee is drawn in once again to a murder investigation. There is also the problem of Hamish, who wants to keep seeing Paislee, and DI Zeffer, who is causing problems for her in more ways than one. The clues are there along the way, but not easy to find; I appreciate this as I love nothing more than working my brain to put the puzzle together to find answers. The murderer is indeed a surprise; again, another thing I truly enjoyed. The ending comes together beautifully, and I will say that I hope things go in the direction that I think they are leading to. A terrific cozy for Christmas, and I would definitely recommend it to others. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review, ...more |

**spoiler alert** When Pru Parke's parents passed away, she moved to England searching for her brother. While there, she met Christopher Pearse, a London Detective Chief Inspector, and eventually they were married. In this fourth Potting Shed mystery, Pru, a master gardener, has accepted a job working alongside her brother Simon at Greenoak, where she is also temporarily residing while the owners are away for a year. Also staying with them for a couple of weeks is Christopher's nephew Orlando, who has been sent there due to an unfortunate incident regarding computer hacking. When Pru first puts him to work in the garden, he sees it as nothing more than punishment, but soon begins adapting, and starts to enjoy his time in the country. One day, while working in the garden, Pru and Simon discover the remains of a World War II German plane, and when it is excavated, they discover something else - human remains. But whose? Christopher has left London and taken a job on the local force as a Special Constable, and is working with Martin Chatters, his superior, to find out who it could be - they know it's not the pilot, but why would there be a body in with an abandoned plane? Then later on, there is another body discovered in the garden, and Pru has to wonder - along with everyone else - what could it possibly have to do with the remains which have yet to be identified? While working alongside her brother Simon is a dream for Pru, it is also a challenge; they argue at every turn about the best things for the garden, and Simon has his heart set on Pru agreeing to a magazine layout that would highlight Greenoak and the work they've done. Then Jack, an old beau of Polly's - Simon's wife - shows up, and the seeds of jealousy are forming within him, even though he and Polly have been married thirty years. It doesn't help when Jack begins to show up anywhere and everywhere, not really causing trouble, but not easing Simon's mind, either. Since it is necessary to the rest of what I say, I do not believe I am offering a spoiler in telling you this: In the first pages of the book we are privvy to a conversation that takes place during the war. One of the men is killed, and then... ...we have the background for our story. I will tell you that I absolutely love mysteries within mysteries. I love the idea that there is not only one, but two mysteries to solve - the old and the new, coming together; because there is no way the murderer could be the same person (or, if it were, they would be extremely old). So why was the second person killed? And what does it have to do with the first? In this, Ms. Wingate does not disappoint. She manages to weave the two stories together effortlessly, giving us glimpse of the past interspersed with the present. When Pru begins investigating on her own, with the help of Orlando, she learns about the people she has chosen to live with, and what happened during the war; she learns about the history of the plane and why it is still on the grounds of Greenoak. But when she begins digging deeper, it is then the second body is found... Soon after the second body, there are a series of break-ins around town, with papers being left strewn about, even though it appears nothing is ever taken. This sets off alarm bells in Christopher's head, and he is asked by another DI to quietly investigate and see if he can tell why the investigation seems to be stalled. I hesitate to say any more about the book, since I do believe that in doing so would truly give away too much of the plot. But I will say that there are enough red herrings to keep even the most dedicated mystery reader intrigued. I have always said that it is not just knowing who the murderer is - and this book is no different than any other in that respect; even if you figure it out before Pru and Christopher do. What is important is the "getting there." Watching the clues and pieces of history come together is gratifying and allows us to see things that might have been, both satisfying and bittersweet. Although this wouldn't be characterized as a humorous mystery, there is one very funny scene where Pru is attempting to make a traditional English Christmas pudding...and she can't cook. I also like the fact that Pru is smart and knowledgeable without being smug, and her friends and family are both realistic and people you'd like to know; there isn't a nasty character among them, which is a nice change. In the end, the plot is well thought out, put together beautifully, and takes us on an enjoyable journey through history and the English countryside. Highly recommended. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review but it in no way influenced my decision. http://joannesbooks.blogspot.com/2016... Mira Michaels, whose sister is a well-known psychic, had plans. She planned to keep that secret from everyone (she didn't). She planned to take the old Victorian home she's living in and flip it, but that hasn't worked out yet. And she planned to be on her way -- but she isn't. Now she's living in an unfinished home with a ghost, a cat she can communicate with (yes!), a dog, and a sassy Macaw. She's also working as a cook in a diner run by her new best friend, Aerie. But Aerie's fallen in love with Pizza Pub owner Sam. The problem is that Sam's the main suspect in a series of thefts at the construction site of a new movie theater going in next door to his place. Then someone is murdered, and the heat is turned up. So Mira does the only thing she can: try to find the killer and hope she doesn't get in the way of Detective Dan Lockhart, the man she's butted heads with before and she doesn't want to do it again...now if she can just avoid a killer who might do it again... This is the fourth book in the series and I just loved it. Let's face it, this isn't high literature, and it's not meant to be. It's meant to be a fun romp in the life of Mira Michaels, who's trying to do things on her own and is having a difficult time doing just that. She gets into situations others can only imagine, and it leaves you shaking your head wondering about her. But she's fun, she's sassy, and she's smart. She doesn't go around accusing people of murder. She tries to share her information with Detective Lockhart, but oh, he makes it so difficult for her! She's trying to get her house fixed, but problem after problem keeps popping up. And let's not even talk about her menagerie of pets (except Arnold, her talking cat that I absolutely adore!) In the end, there are clues to the murderer, but you have to think about it a minute. I figured it out, but then again, I read a lot of mysteries. When it all comes together there's quite an interesting ending that leaves us waiting eagerly for the next in the series (soon, please!). Highly recommended.
