InsteaI was hoping for something more like a modern take on Screwtape Letters- workers in hell forever chained to the learning of taking down humans. Instead this a book where Hell is sort of a tongue in cheek joke (everyone talks degrading. Pens don’t work. Food doesn’t taste good. Everything is annoying) and the human subjects being followed are all jerks anyway.
I didn’t care about the characters. They were all obnoxious. I didn’t care about the vague descriptions of the levels of hell- they were so flippant it didn’t even matter. Literally had to skim some bits because the repetition of the scenarios just kept going.
In the end the story tries to get sentimental about being a human and experiencing life but at that point I didn’t care. This book just wasn’t for me. Too crude & not enough real explanation of hell and the deals it makes.
One for the author, because- I mean she wrote a book and it's a movie..... good for her. One star for me. For plowing through it.
Where to2 bleak stars.

Where to start. I read this in spite of my disdain for over the top 'domestic thrillers' that are full of horrible people. I saw a movie critic that I really respect praise the story (the movie) and I thought I would read it first. Upon starting I will admit, I was pulled in. I loved the blog and it's format mixed in with the flashbacks of what really happened, but then the flash back of her half-brother showing up happened.... and I realized.....yuck. This is lame.
The next twist is interesting, as Stephanie realizes she is being watched and the situation is not what it seems, but then it goes down hill from there. No one is spared in the path of a couple that wants a little money. It gets lame. It's over the top. No one is to be trusted (or liked). Not to mention the writing feels like a YA novel. I mean, to just tell me ..."he is hot" and think that suffices as a descriptive sentence..... no thanks.
I read it so fast, because, well, I wanted to see how it would end, and honestly 5 days later I don't even remember the ending. It was that contrived. Unless you are a die hard of easy and cheesy and somewhat lame domestic thrillers, move on to the next book on your list....more
