"It'll make you want to sleep with the lights on." - Teen People "Vande Velde again chills, charms, moves and startles with her customary effectiveness" - Kirkus Reviews
However I suppose the stories may be scarier for a teenager.
My favourites were the first and last story which not coincidently were the scariest of them all. (There are only 7 stories in all.) The fifth one was pretty good as well.
I'd be interested in what a young adult though of the book (16 and under more specifically.) ...more

It's a very moving story, it does a good job of pulling me in and making me think I'm there. It's a good way to learn about history without the monotony of school work. (hint for homeschooling families) It succeeded in showing that times then were scary but is not too scary for most children 10 and over to handle.
This is the second book by Lois Lowry I've read and so far they've rated 5 and 4 1/2 stars so I look forward to reading more....more

I'd read Green Angel which is another of her young adult books but it was still almost an inch thick. This one was barely 1/4 inch thick. It took me 23 minutes to read.
It's the story of a mermaid named Aquamarine that gets thrown into a pool in the middle of a city thanks to a storm. The pool (and surrounding area) are being torn down at the end of the week but Aquamarine refused to go unless she can meet the guy who runs the place. What can the two girls who discovered her do to help?
It's like a spin-off on The Little Mermaid in that the mermaid falls in love with a human man but the rest of the story is different. It was a cute story that I'm sure girls ages 10-14 would love. ...more

So when contemplating reads for the 2nds challenge, I remembered that I had always wanted to read the other books about The Pigman, (there is also The Pigman and Me which I intend to read.)
I'm glad I decided to read this one. The Pigman's Legacy is even BETTER than The Pigman. I was almost in tears at the end. I love the writing style which switches with each chapter between the two main Characters John and Lorraine. It's also written like the two of them are typing on a computer and telling their story. It's cool to have little side comments that seem more about their lives instead of the story. This writing style is one thing I liked about The Pigman.
The Pigman is a banned book and this one isn't (at least not yet) but I can see some people having a problem with it. Not because of the "swearing" (which is written like this: @#$%) but because there is talk of sex. None of the characters have sex but it is talked about. I don't have a problem with that personally as teens usually know more about sex than we give them credit for and at least it talks about healthy and safe sex.
I recommend this book to all teens, it has a great lesson that you don't need to dissect the book to understand. I look forward to reading The Pigman and Me and also Paul Zindel's other books....more

It’s the story of Kit Tyler, a teenage girl who leaves her home in Barbados to come live with her Puritan relatives in the Connecticut Colony. You can imagine the culture shock and she feels alone until she meets a mysterious woman known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond and when their friendship is discovered, Kit is accused of witchcraft herself.
I didn’t pay attention in History class much so I both learned about life in the 1680’s and at the same time, became confused about things because I didn’t know much. I wish the book had explained certain terms just in case readers don’t know what they mean. E.g. Puritans, Royalists etc…
The book shows how non-conformists were thought of as witches in those days and that those they accused of witchcraft, weren’t necessarily practicing any magical art. I enjoyed the book and can see why it received the Newbery. ...more
