i believe Ann Liang might become a must read author for me because the way it BROKE ME IN PIECES BUT AT THE SAME TIME HEALED ME?!?!?!?!?!? i have no idea why i'm reading so many books inspired by/with/happening in Asian countries this year but i'm here for it because i love how authors play with the setting and how important it is to the characters. and this time it made me rethink a lot of things about those who inmigrate as kids and then forget everything about their home country, which happens more often that anyone realizes. with that said, i ADORED the setting of the book and how it started happening, i adore how the author was able to show us the magic of China that goes beyond the aesthetic and what the mainstream thinks about it. and finally i read a book with kids that loathe each other but their feelings grow in time (mainly because i wanna write one too but had no idea how to do it). I so enjoyed whenver he was near because of all the feelings involved, which was super adorable. how they eventually started to trust one another, so far as to believe he will be the one to get her and save her when she got lost. how she wasn't afraid of sharing her deepest secret because, for the first time in forever, she wanted to tell someone. and then there are her thoughts, which were what broke me in the first place. i think anyone who is having doubts about everything in life can find themselves reflected in this book because the amount of times i yelled out loud when something made me emotional??? lost count ...more

as a History teacher and queer, this was pure perfection. the writing didn't feel heavy at all despite sometimes repeating things, it just went with the flow, adding more mystery and magic to this city and the characters. i ADORED the historical bits, the many personalities and how important they later became to the story and the MC, how they added more depth to the story of the city and the LGBT+ community. speaking of the characters, i loved how not a single one was similar in character to each other. Each was so unique in their queerness, something i truly appreciated because it kinda reads like a love letter to queer people and to embrace yourself as such. the MC was kinda hard to understand but when i did, everything clicked because i'm also in his position and sometimes everything is hard and you have no idea what to do. the ending made me tear up a little and my heart is still sore from reading it. the last chapters had me suffering so much and you truly have no idea how everything will end. but even tho it kinda hurts, i loved it. so yeah, i have no idea what else to write so PLEASE go read this book if you haven't yet. this will probably became another queer book i will recommend without getting tired because it is that good ...more

i want a man who YEARRRRRNS :O the only thing that i was expecting from this book was having the song If Only from the Descendants movie stuck in my head, but i wasn't expecting to read from the boy's POV, or be so nervous whenever he started to realize his feelings were deeper. it was such a fast read and super beautiful, i hadn't realized how much i missed reading about a second chance romance after all the ones i've read last year, and now i need more. Seth was such a relatable character and i loved his growth. Nina as a teenager was super cute and reminded me soooo much of myself when i was little, which made me blush a lot because yep, it was just like that :P there were some details in the writing that gave me an irk but then i was just flying through because the angst was there and it gave me chiiills. the modern references didn't bother me at all, i loved how organic the relationship grew and with such patience and care *insert many heart eyes* overall, i just love how Shaina writes and how beautiful the romances are. can't wait to continue reading whatever she writes!...more

Aun asi, los personajes me terminaron cayendo algo mejor y al final hubo bastante crecimiento de personaje. El Pirata es basicamente el mejor de todos y no admito discusion. i may not listen to many audiobooks per year but, once i do it, i discover something amazing and makes me love them more. and this one was no exception. the full cast and the effects were AMAZING, i had never listened to such an audiobook and i just loved it. i could imagine everything well in my head thanks to the effects, at first i was scared i wouldn't be able to but the narrators make such a good job i was invested by the 5th minute. and of course i imagined the male MC as tyler posey because how could i not??? i loved the setting and the reality show, i was just scared all the time they would get discovered but omg i wasn't expecting all the support from everyone around them and how close they got to each other. i have to admit their kiss took me entirely by surprise because THERE WAS A SOUND EFFECT FOR THAT TOO, IT WAS A LOT :O but yeah, it was really short but really enjoyable, i loved exploring their dynamics and how they evolved and realized their feelings. for being my first full cast audiobook, i truly enjoyed it!!...more

i don't know even how to start because i wasn't expecting this at all. the adoptee situation and how hard it can be for some people, the complicated sister relationship, grief of losing someone you never knew, the pressure religion can put on someone, wanting to reconnect with a past that you didn't knew it existed... it was too much but at the same time it was handled so amazingly i have to hug this book and the author. even she explained it in her letter at the end of the book, which made me appreciate it even more. the side characters were super cool and i love how the diversity was included little by little, something that can even happen in real life. the MC was so beatiful and cute and adorable i want him to teach me Mandarin, too. tbh it was such a good book and a really solid debut. even tho it was such a short book, it didn't feel like one and i enjoyed it from start to finish (insert many heart emojis here)...more

you have to close the stadium. this book is PHENOMENAL in every sense of the world. a very rich and diverse world. amazing side characters. a plot that you have no idea where it's going, so hard that you don't know who is the ship and who is the villain. and a main character i was rooting for since the very beggining. starting with the fact that AT LAST A BOOK ABOUT DANCERS THAT DEPICT HOW DANCING REALLY IS AND HOW TIRING AND ALSO BEAUTIFUL IT CAN BE, she is so real with her emotions and feelings. since i know the chronic illness aspect comes from the author herself, i know she was well written in that regard. the plot twists had me GAGGING. and that ending... yeah no, bring me the second book RIGHT. NOW. that i know it will murder me the same way as this first one :O and please read it. this is such a good book i'm pretty sure it will end up being a fave of the year... and my life....more
