the real crime this is based on (native children being taken from their families and abused in “schools”) has been transformed into a story accessible for everyone
it will help people empathise, who can’t do it in their own unfortunately some people need a story like this to help them put into perspective their own bigoted views rather than just looking at the real world ...more
can someone make it mandatory for every man to read this book??

unfortunately this was very relatable but i guess also comforting at the same time to know i’m not the only one who has experienced things like this.
it was very short, only 163 pages, but packed in so many different situations that illustrated pretty much every struggle a woman is subjected to in her life. from sexual harassment to mother shaming, it really had it all.
of course i was left angry, upset and frustrated because: why is our world like this?? ...more

louise has a way of describing things that creates such a clear picture and feeling as well that i haven’t had with other authors her similies and metaphors are very “everyday” and relatable which made me feel more connected to Debbie i also thought all the characters were well developed and felt real
also the irish idioms were so endearing although i don’t think i would’ve understood some of them if i hadn’t had a crash course from my friends when i lived to Belfast last month!
so glad i borrowed this from my flat mate <3...more

i did struggle a bit to keep track of all the characters and remember how everyone linked with each other but when it clicked it was amazing :))
the way the history of the black community in the uk and sexism against women was presented definitely taught me in a way i haven’t been before. it’s all well and good being shown a history textbook with facts but to connect with a story of someone who has actually experienced it is completely different and imo the best way to break down walls <3...more

i mean that’s not to say i didn’t find this incredibly sad and wish for things to be different for the characters but i guess i just wasn’t as shocked as much as i probably should have been?? maybe i should see a therapist myself...
however it will forever be one of my favourites for the style in which it was written (i liked how the memories were presented), the topics which were discussed/brought to light and, of course the beautiful characters <3...more
gripping the whole way through (even though i found a lot of the business talk a little confusing at times) and i was actually si understand the hype!
