What a memoir! This is Bethany Joy Lenz’s powerful story of being on a cult TV show (One Tree Hill) while also being in a cult. It’s HEAVY - Bethany has been through a lot - but it’s so good and easily readable in one sitting. I loved listening to the audio since it’s narrated by Bethany herself and I felt like she was just sitting there with me telling me her story.
This is perfect for: - Elder Millennials and One Tree Hill fans - Fans of Jennette McCurdy’s I’M GLAD MY MOM DIED - Lovers of cult books - Those looking to read a powerful memoir...more

Based on Amber’s father’s story, ONYX & BEYOND is a powerful middle grade work of historical fiction written in verse. This touches on Onyx’s experience taking care of his mother with early onset dementia while they Civil Rights Movement is quickly picking up speed. I loved that we got Onyx’s perspective, through his hardship and wondering about safety during the 1960s, but also dreaming and exploring and just being a boy. Amber’s writing is absolutely beautiful and something I keep coming back to again and again. ...more

This book took me in two directions: (1) WOW, YES, she *is* so resilient and I'm so inspired! I love going to the gym and a comeback after an injury *is* possible. (2) CrossFit people might be a little crazy. I found it a little sad that everything in her life is focused on a three-day event. There’s something to be said for rest and giving yourself time to heal instead of rushing it and lying to officials to continue in a competition when it might not really be good for your body. Is that really resilience?...more

Fantastic memoir - I’m just going to post my favorite quote and I think you’ll be able to get the overall vibe. READ THIS. Or listen because Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez narrates her own story.
“ On one end of the spectrum, there was the narrative of the super-immigrant— the newly arrived person who strives to be the best, who assimilates and somehow overcomes everything that comes between them and success. Society loves these immigrants, praising them and benefiting from their contributions. These are the immigrants that we idolize as the ideal symbols of American success, as achievers of the elusive American dream.
On the other end of the spectrum are the immigrants people use as scapegoats. They're laborers and dishwashers. They're the janitors in my high school, my uncle and aunt, my mom and dad. They're people who come across good opportunities. They're the immigrants people hate and talk shit about straight to my face. They're the immigrants that white people love to tell me that I am not like.”...more
