I thought this truly was just some stupid love story. I'd enjoy some spicy scenes and a cheesy happily ever after.
What I was not prepared for was a book that would rip my heart out of my chest and smash it into a thousand glittering pieces only to gently glue it back together into something new, something beautiful.
Just Some Stupid Love Story is not your regular romcom. It's a story of real love. It's a poignant reminder that real love is messy and painful and scary but so, so worth it. ...more

UM, Hi. Dear author and publisher, you don't say a book is the first in a series IF IT ISN'T. There's a whole novella that was literally published before this 'first' book that is marketed as a prequel.
ITS NOT A PREQUEL IF IT WAS PUBLISHED FIRST AND CONTAINS CRUCIAL INFORMATION FOR THE FOLLOWING BOOKS
The thing about prequels is that while they may or may not stand alone from their counterparts, the counterpart MUST be able to standalone. Otherwise, it's not a prequel (0.5) and book one (1). It's book one and book two....more

The moment I read the description, I knew I had to have this book. I absolutely love werewolves and shifter romances in general. Something happened in my childhood (god knows what) that inexorably linked shifters with my sex drive so now it's a kink of mine. Cool!
Unfortunately, a lot of the werewolf romances out there are ABO (alpha, beta, omega for the uninitiated) and tend to be set in a world of pre-existing werewolf lore. While those romances are okay to read, I really like werewolves in the real world where the exploration of the lore is filled with more mystery and humor vs. the dark fantasy angst that ABO books tend to have. I also like more cozy camp and warm intimacy which Rosie Danan did perfectly in Fan Service.
She also did such an amazing job catering to the massive group of slightly bizarre writers and readers who create fandoms and fanfic. This book was such a clear love letter to all of us and the worlds we create and it warmed my heart to read.
Finally, holy heckin hell, Rosie Danan dialed the kinky up to 11. Degradation, submission, BDSM, a dash of masochism... my lustful heart was SCREAMING.
Much like a novelty ice cream, this book wasn't perfect. It could have used a few touch ups here and there, but that couldn't matter less to me. The joy it filled me with was worth every word.

Edit - WAIT A GODDAMN SECOND. It just occured to me that I could've (and should've) been imaging Devin as Jared Padalecki this whole time. Missed opportunity. I'll do it when the audiobook comes out
_______________
side thoughts (not main review) - i do think that devin should've been younger. not only was the age gap a little.... odd, he also didn't act 42 at all nor did alex act 34. They should've both been in their late 20s imo.

in all seriousness, this book hit me like a truck. what the author lacked in vocabulary*, she made up for in heart and poignancy. this book was oozing with both joy and maturity and acted like a warm balm on my jaded heart.

Increasing my rating to four stars because I have fallen completely in love with this world and its characters. ____________
I have so many feelings about this book. Big, messy feelings. On one hand, this is literally the written execution my imaginary romances that I write as I fall asleep which was an absolutely blast to read. But on the other hand, it definitely could have been touched up some. I would have loved to have seen more emotional depth and stakes.
Unfortunately, the chemistry between Finn and Jaime did feel a touch shallow even with the intimate scenes. it felt very instalove-y. Additionally, and this is not a problem per se, the sex was just a bit too much for me. I like my sex scenes like a warm bowl of soup: flavorful, comforting, cozy with a hint of spice. These scenes were more like a spicy curry- burning, enthralling, a bit too much for my tastes. I'm really not into the breeding/bodily fluids stuff and there was a LOT of it. maybe a bit too much.
That being said, I'll probably continue with this author because despite the few complaints, I had a good time reading this...more
I... have mixed feelings about this. It teetered on the edge of being good but was way to reductionist and insta-lovey for my tastes. Also, the whole I... have mixed feelings about this. Also, the whole they grew up together, basically siblings, but now they desperately want to f**k each other thing was really uncomfortable. honestly, I don't think it's a trope that is easy to do well and it was not done well here.
