With Bags strewn everywhere, toys left untouched and not a soul in sight, it would be ludicrous to assume otherwise. Or so she thinks. but as her day goes from bad to bizarre, she may need to find alternative explanations.
Revamp by Beck Sherman is what you get when Resident Evil meets 30 Days of Darkness..with some parts Dracula thrown in. Ordinarily, this would put me off the whole book. but Sherman has some skills in storytelling and I have to say - this book was Good!
WHY I LOVED THIS BOOK Sharman creates characters who are funny, smart and resilient. They have had to cope with a world where there are no frills left, and each has adjusted in their own way - something which gives each character a solid background. The best thing I liked was that not one character was uni-dimensional, or typical. They were very much real.
Revamp is primarily a horror story, but there are many themes intermingled. It deals with loss, sacrifice, commitment and loyalty. In a world where vampires have overrun the human population and now harvest them as food, you really find out exactly who is on your side. Sherman gives justice to each sub-plot.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE My main criticism with the book is the writing....not the story, but the writing skills. While reading, I found several errors, grammatical and otherwise. At one point she even uses different pronouns for a particular person! Such errors are really off-putting.
Also the writing needs some work. In the first part, when we are just acquainted with Emma and the flow of the story hasn't started yet, that is when the writing plays a crucial role. In that respect, I was a little let down
Another thing I hated was the constant switch of perspective. When I am reading a story in the first person from a single point of view, to suddenly change it to the third person, from the perspective of a person I know very little about, and care even less about, just to give a back story that could have been done without changing POVs, is incredibly annoying. Plus, it seemed an amateurish move on the author's part.
(view spoiler)[A couple of plot holes were there. For example, if all the passengers in the plane had been 'taken' or whatever, why was Emma spared? They couldn't have known back then she was 'special'. And if they HAD known, the scene following makes no sense.
And I have teensy 'what the hell' moment about the end. Hitler?? SERIOUSLY?? What was his role exactly? (hide spoiler)]
CONCLUSION To sum up, it really is a great book. The author gives a good background, funny commentary, likable characters and a great story. With just a little more work, it has the potential to become "amazing"....more

I miss the fun-carefree Viking who had not a care in the world, who always had wittty lines and devious plots up his sleeve.
This Eric is not one I recognize from the earlier books.
I feel like Harris is building towards something with this change, but what..I can't say yet....more

The author's writing is really good...it is humourous, but can also well-play the emotional moments. Te character are very well-developed and I can't wait to know more about them. Seriously, what IS Jeff's Animal?
It isn't exactly a roller-coaster of a ride, but I love the pace of the stories. Chloe Neil knows exactly how much information to give to whet our appetite and to keep us coming back for more. Some questions are answered while more are raised. I can't wait to dive into Book 3!

Damon by Teresa Gableman started out quite good. The character, Nicole, is a smart, funny woman with an interesting job. But it quickly went downhill from there. With innumerable clichés at every page, the book was turning out to be a horrific mixture of all the popular Vampire books out there.
Damon is a tall, gorgeous vampire, with golden eyes that can turn black when he is pissed or hungry. He is gentlemanly, brooding and somewhat self loathing. Also, he can read people's mind except for the woman he is supposed to fall in love with. Sound familiar? .....Brownie Points for the person who said Twilight!
How about this part: The vampires have come out to the general population. Not everyone accepts it. Vampires are hurt by silver. Oh, and their blood is addictive. That's right. It's the Sookie Stackhouse series
The gorgeous guy, the cute blond with the personality of a saint, the ever-supporting friend, the way-too gorgeous bitch vying for the guy's attention and, of course, the arrogant jerk who wants to kill the girl for whatever nefarious reasons -- they are all there. Nothing was original!
Even then I could live with it, but then came the writing. I'm sorry for saying this, but there is no excuse for a grown woman to make as many grammatical and linguistic errors as was made in this book. "...matrimony of marriage." What is that???
The only redeemable portions of this book were the moments of humour and the banter between the characters.
I have read books I have not liked before. Of course, there will be books that some will like, others won't. But Damon feels like the author didn't even try! It's like she copy/pasted her favourite moments from various novels. It was like going through the work of a pre-schooler.
The author has potential, the last twist testified to that. I just wish she made a little more effort instead of going with "what works"....more

For one, we loved the original classic's characters. So belittling them by changing their characters completely is not going to help. And just adding sex and gore is not about to make this horror. It just gives us a headache. Was the rape even necessary??
Dacre may be the original writer's relative but it's clear that literary talent is not something he inherited. I was severely disappointed just from the synopsis. There was no way I was finishing this book....more

Mercifully free of annoying characters, and the age-old vampire-werewolf clash, this book is a not-serious fun-filled journey through Mirago(she has a ridiculous name. it's funny)'s accidental foray into vampirism.
Oh no, wait, they never claim to be vampires. They have a 'genetic problem' which is incidentally contagious. Of course, our protagonist doesn't believe them and comes up with some hilarious lines expressing it.
It's light and funny, not at all surprising, but definitely entertaining. The plotholes are big enough to drive a truck through, but barring that, a definitely recommendable read...more
