Aimed at older readers than The Tomten , this is a longer, more descriptive book that builds up a picture of both everyday life on the farm as well as Christmas traditions. The illustrations are not coloured watercolours, but unusually printed on grey paper, with black and white inks. As usual, they are charming, especially the animals! It is a joy to revisit the snowy night farm where the Tomten lives....more

Trying to be a cross between Winnie-the-Pooh and Le Petit Prince , but instead being a rather shallow artistic motivational quotes book. Like many popular picture books at the moment, this seems more suited to adults than something children would enjoy (don't get me wrong, that's not inherently a negative, I think perhaps there's a market there!). Art-wise it is distinctive and stylistic, quite appealing even if not so approachable by children."What do we do when our hearts hurt?" asked the boy. "We wrap them with friendship, shared tears and time, till they wake hopeful and happy again" and "Tears fall for a reason and they are your strength not weakness" and "Often the hardest person to forgive is yourself" . All things seen floating round 2014 on places like Facebook - essentially pseudo-profundity, none of which is remotely helpful for those actually in difficult circumstances. I know picture books get criticism for twee fairies and so on, but at least there's some imagination and plot in those books if nothing else! The text is handwritten, which in some ways is a nice personal touch, but it is also difficult to read, and therefore again makes it less approachable to children, and not in a good way like having a large vocabulary.
