I loved how woman focused this book was, and harped on the challenges of being a woman in the hockey world. Ellie held her ground though and put everyone in their place. Lincoln was such a softie— hard exterior but he has a lot of past trauma that I’m glad the two characters got to talk through as I believe that bonded their relationship in a healthy way. Especially after a foundation of miscommunication— or rather she didn’t really know what life was like for them in their childhood and vice versa. The antagonists of the story got their just desserts and I just had a lot of fun with this book! A great hockey romance and I love the hockey play details added from Jillian’s own expertise.

Imagine finding out you’re going to be murdered from your own ghost. Ruby sees her own ghosts, Grudge style, randomly and the state of the ghost (dress, injuries, etc), begins to give her clues as to how she’s going to die. It changes as her present conditions changes and Ruby is trying to prevent it. The event isn’t in the distant future; it’s the upcoming weekend at Prom. So Ruby is working on a tight deadline to save herself. This isn’t all that Ruby has going on. What did you expect? She’s a teenager. She’s dealing with trying to save her family’s theme park, getting bullied at school, her crush on Alexander who is part of the popular crew— and who’s leader she just took down in her anonymous blog @reputationkiller . Very Gossip Girl of her. As she tries to solve her own murder and prevent it from happening, her investigation leads to a lot more secrets being exposed. She always knew the rich were shady, but she didn’t realize how deep everything was interwoven. I found this an exciting, fast-paced read and was suspicious of everyone but her gay besties, Anton and Xavier. I was so glad she had them and their ride-or-die support, or not she may have actually died. I thought it kind of wild what the whole reasoning for everything was, but also not surprising. And the little whodunnit twist at the end! It’s also a little sad, but I can’t get into the details of why without revealing stuff.

It’s about a governess who’s got a bit of a fiery temper (to match her hair) who becomes governess over a naval captains nephews. Their mother has gone off on an adventure, and the kids need to be governed. He is VERY type A, and she has some predispositions about naval men because of her stepfather, but she slowly learns that Harry isn’t really as uptight as he presents to be. He’s soft with the children, and actually cares. A side she never saw from her stepfather. She begins to grow soft for him, which is bad because one— he’s her employer, but worse— he’s a naval man. It feels hypocritical to her. I thought this was a well paced and very enjoyable regency romance that leaves you rooting for Georgie and Harry. Harry has his dumb moments — as all men do— but I found Georgie’s argumentative attitude festered some bantering that was a delight to read and definitely solidified their relationship.

It took elements/m that we’re familiar with — Harry Potter like houses (one of the love interests definitely gives Draco vibes), mythical creatures, “magic” abilities— and turns it on its head to still create something unique. Ada is sent as a spy to this magical academy, coming from a secret society in the provincial (human) world. But what she finds out there has her thinking that neither side is entirely right and swaying in her allegiance. The world building is well done, blending magic culture with NYC and an island. I could definitely see this as a movie. As for the love interests, I would say there’s technically three but really two. Kor I feel was more of a childhood crush that will never manifest into anything. Michael is a forbidden love in that he’s a teacher and a few years older. There’s also a lot of secrets there and he’s a bit emotionally manipulative but he does obviously care for her. And then there’s Rafe— our Draco archetype, who viscerally hates her at first but slowly starts to thaw— we even get a fake dating scenario from them. By the end of the book, I think I am Team Rafe but with the ending there is clearly more we are going to see and unveil.
I can’t wait for book 2! I think this is going to be an incredible series.
