There were so many good elements. I'm sad to say that I am continuously surprised every time I read a book I actually consider "good." I loved the descriptions of the food. My life is consumed with cooking and food, I love books that use realistic representations of foods and cooking.
The book moved so quickly, yet was written vividly and concisely. I found many times that when I looked at just the previous page, huge sections of time in the story had passed. Single paragraphs described whole events. All this taken into account, the story was none the less captivating even for its brevity. As a long-winded writer, I LOVED the concise style of writing. I figured I could learn a thing or two about brief writing from the story.
All in all (minus my spoiler below) I really enjoyed the book.
MINI SPOILER ALERT As Yelena was learning to fight, the details were so intricate. So many authors have hardly any lives and neglect to include the details that make situations real. I have trained with a Jang Bong briefly and I could definitely sense the reality of the story when Yelena started training with a bow staff. In most stories I read, when the main character starts learning self-defense (it happens more often than not)there is no reality to the situation. The writers had obviously never punched someone in the face. However, in Poison Study, Maria Snyder accurately mentions how Yelena needed to learn to punch so she wouldn't break her hand, etc. ...more

I LOVED the premise. I love imitating people and such (the way they walk, their little gestures, speech patterns, accents). By the end of this book I was dying to assume another identity and live two different lives. I also love books about intelligent people. Montmorency was intelligent enough to satisfy me, but sufficiently human also. I was really nervous near the end. I thought, There's no way she can wrap it up that fast! But, she did! It was thoroughly enjoyable =D

I thought it would just be the typical fairy tale "I'm so unfortunate but then everything good happens to me and I save the world and meet my prince and live happily ever after." However, much to my enjoyment, the book proved to be a humorous story with spunk reminiscent of Ella Enchanted. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. One of my favorite aspects was that it was not, unlike so many fairy tales, just a shallow stringing together of fanciful elements. Rather, the title character underwent growth and change as she reacted to her circumstances in a way that was consistently in character. I also love that the book is intelligently written. It is not dumbed down or written with shallow wordiness. And I'm not TOTALLY biased just because the author used my favorite word, perspicacity. =D

By the way, I, who am petrified of the ocean in a "its so gorgous and God is really cool for making it but it is still big and scary and what if I got lost or a tide pulled me out and I drowned and giant squids feasted on my pitiful remains" kind of way, am falling more in love with the utter coolness of water. ...more

I've always loved mythology, and this series presents mythology in a light, humorous light that almost pokes fun at the quirks and tempers of the gods.
The main character is cute and likable, though I think in the first book he is written older than he is supposed to be. I work with 10, 11, and 12 yearolds, and he definitely didn't come across as the age he was supposed to be. I don't have a huge problem with that because the series, so far, is really light and enjoyable. (I'm listening to them on tape) They are easy to listen to and still exciting. I often feel like series' all follow the same pattern. The "Star Wars" pattern. This drove me nuts in Harry Potter to the point that I was saying "Harry, Harry, Voldemort is your father," and "The force will be with you Harry." This also drove me insane in the Eragon series, which was even more like Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings. "Eragon, Eragon, I am your father." And *SPOILER* you know the mentor is going to die, just like Obi Wan and Dumbledore. All that to say, so far I have NOT gotten the "great, its like watching Star Wars all over again" feeling with Percy Jackson.
I really like these books. I recommend them for people who want light, quick reads that are unique and funny. ...more
