I thought it would just be the typical fairy tale "I'm so unfortunate but then everything good happens to me and I save the world and meet my prince and live happily ever after." However, much to my enjoyment, the book proved to be a humorous story with spunk reminiscent of Ella Enchanted. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. One of my favorite aspects was that it was not, unlike so many fairy tales, just a shallow stringing together of fanciful elements. Rather, the title character underwent growth and change as she reacted to her circumstances in a way that was consistently in character. I also love that the book is intelligently written. It is not dumbed down or written with shallow wordiness. And I'm not TOTALLY biased just because the author used my favorite word, perspicacity. =D
I have it on audio and every night since I was younger than the main character (Turtle, who is about 13) I listen to one of thBest book ever. The end.
I have it on audio and every night since I was younger than the main character (Turtle, who is about 13) I listen to one of the tapes in order to fall asleep. I am currently listening to the first tape, and every night (for the past couple months) I flip between side 1 and side 2. In my 4+ years of listening to this book every night, I have never gotten tired of it or wanted to switch books. I can recite by heart the first chapter just from listening to it over and over.
Other than this obsessive compulsive habit, the book is lovely to listen to or read all the way through. I adore the characters, the story, the setting, and the style of writing. One night that I slept in my mom's room I brought the tape in to listen to as we fell asleep, she was laughing so hard she couldn't sleep. =D
