In all seriousness, this is an excellent social commentary and is even better when you realize when it was written and how much of it is part of society today.
This book is often talked about with "Brave New World" but I don't believe that one holds a candle to "1984"...more

The symbolism is incredible and it is a relatable story of a man that has lost himself in the idealistic love of a woman that has been held on such a pedestal she is no longer real. I didn't truly appreciate this book until I was able to discuss the literary merits of it in guided discussions, but doing so has left me wowed on all that Gatsby has to offer...more

At some points, you get so overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problems of colonization in Africa you want to scream... but instead you keep reading, you see this incredible exposure to the problem, and walk away from the book with a deeper sense of responsibility for the uglier parts of humanity but the beauty that can come even from dark times in one's life ...more

BOOK
Read it. Love it. Read it again.
Okay, so Evie is our heroic heroine attempting to escape the evilness of her family by proposing a marriage of convenience to Sebastian St. Vincent, a penniless, titled, *gorgeous* rake in need of money and absolutely against love.
They elope to Scotland for a hasty marriage to satisfy both needs.
What ensues in the novel is just pure romancelandia magic. There is steam, humor, kindness, banter, mystery, suspense, and best of all LOVE
I can't say that I would love Evie or Sebastian separately as much as I adore them together. It was one of those books where you literally could not wait for the next moment they see each other again because they are that dynamic together.
I will say I obviously missed some details about Evie and Sebastian that occurred in the other books of the series. It wasn't detrimental to the plot, as everything was thoroughly explained and woven together, but I almost felt left out at watching the other wallflowers make appearance without knowing how they fell in love haha!...more
What a haunting book. I read this book after seeing the movie, but despite knowing the plots I was still so greatly engrossed in this book. The story What a haunting book. I read this book after seeing the movie, but despite knowing the plots I was still so greatly engrossed in this book. The story is heartbreaking but also so believable and relatable to love and how sometimes you can do everything with good intentions but others stand in your way. I also thought McEwan's twists and use of perspective as a method to tell the story and change the past/present telling of the story made it an excellent read. ...more
