This went through so many plot twists! I couldn't even guess the true ending of the book because of them. There were many instances where I was surprised at what was happening simply because I didn't expect it. This was epic, even down to the last sentence. ...more

Celaena was making some choices that were soo out of character and it kinda hurt to read. I had to plow through the middle of the book. If she would have given him a chance to explain himself, maybe they would get along? But no. She hates him. At least he's trying to respect that and give her distance.
Chaol (how do you even pronounce his name???) is my favorite character I think? I have no idea after this.
The pacing was well done. Every scene either progressed the plot or a character's growth. It was eloquent.
The magic was very cool. It played out in a eery way and was surprising in some spots....more

Most of the book is written Kiera Cass's formula. It reminds me of her "The Selection" series all too much. But then pages 224 on happened and gave the story some much needed variety. For the first section of the book, I would rate it a solid 1.5 stars.
I was quite disappointed in how the royalty acted, politics, etiquette, and in the commentary of the main character. • Royal actions: The author needed to brush up on her history and read books about and by royalty. That would have made it more bearable. • Politics: Little to none. If the author would have included more, it would be much more interesting. They were included in such a brief way too. She just really brushed aside worldbuilding in favor to her “story.” • Etiquette: Little to none. What there is doesn't match the setting. Author needed to do research. • MC commentary: 100% unneeded. She is rude to everything that she doesn't approve of. People from other countries, foreign clothing, even her own friends. One of the worst parts about this book is this.
I like two things about the main character. 1) Her name, Hollis. 2) After a long while of thinking, I finally decided that her choice to tell people what she did after the crowning ceremony was a good choice.
I don't like the main character Hollis. She's rude, spoiled, and racist. She rubs me the wrong way. The king is little better. The foreigner love interest is sort of interesting, but wasn’t fleshed out enough.
The writing style still needs some work. It is written to middle school girls, even though the content within should probably go for an older age group.
I separated the story into two sections, the first of which being "The Selection" near replica. The second is the new stuff.
Section 1) Fluffy. A lot of times that were pretty pointless in the long run. Hard to get through.
Section 2) Action. The start of character development. Actually interesting and new stuff.
Thanks to the second section, I will be reading the second book. I’m not sure if it will be any better though....more
4.5 First of all, lemme just say that the cover is so well done!! So gorgeous!
The story was pretty full of cliches. I found them enjoyable most likely 4.5 First of all, lemme just say that the cover is so well done!! So gorgeous!
The story was pretty full of cliches. I found them enjoyable most likely because of the events that they created. This is about a girl (apprentice librarian) who is discovering who she really is and how she fits into the world. I think it was fairly well paced, maybe a little slow.
The characters were cool. They each had a lot of character development which I totally appreciated. -Vhalla is your typical female YA fantasy character. At first I couldn't stand her, but as the story progressed, I learned that she's kinda awesome. -Prince Aldrik is your typical bad boy/misunderstood soul. He's described by many characters in the book to have a 'silver tongue' which I could see sometimes. -the rest, although cool, didn't really show up and play a HUGE part like these two did.
The writing was decent. It did its job. It isn't my favorite but it flowed (mostly) so it was good. There were spots where I honestly was so confused. Maybe four spots. They just didn't provide enough information for me to realize what was going on.
The cliffhanger at the end is brutal. Cannot wait until book 2!...more

The writing was very fluid and delightful to read. Each of the characters were carefully crafted and were so sweet. I was not able to connect with the main characters, though, as I felt this was geared towards children. I can tell children are going to love this!

I found that I really didn't want to read it and eventually made myself read it so I could give it back to its owner. The author, though meaning to make a sweet interesting story, made another draft for a book.
Basically, to sum it all up: Agghh just please get a beta reader!!!...more

This was a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast tale but it was unlike almost every one I have read before. The themes that were incorporated into the old story felt natural because of the way this new story progressed. The old folk tale really got a spectacular face lift.
The characters were quite fun to get to know. Each of them got their own character arc - which is not often incorporated in most stories I read. • I did like Feyre but she wasn’t my favorite character. She mainly was your stereotypical YA fantasy heroine and reminded me of Maas’s other main character. I liked that she had her weak moments and they were believable. • I really love Tamlin’s name!! It’s super charming. • Rhys was such an arrogant charmer but what happened in the last chapter NEEDS to be explained!! I found him a bit annoying but enjoyable at the same time. (If that makes sense.)
The world building overall was okay. I found it was hard to keep track of locations and their importance though. My other complaint was the on/off fast pacing. A lot of it was slow but I feel like there are hints in there for the sequels.
I was wondering what all the hype was about surrounding this book. Now I know....more
