The book is short, funny and so damn unserious with the classic British humor we all love. I randomly picked this book up out of nowhere only for it to become one of my favorites! I loved the characters, I loved the story-telling, I loved the writing, and here are some quotes from the book that according to me should more or less convince everyone to read this...
“If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!”
“Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?”
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”
Okay, so this was not that good of a book, considering how much BookTubers hyped it up for me. I won't say it was a terrible reading experience, but iOkay, so this was not that good of a book, considering how much BookTubers hyped it up for me. Well, this concludes my first read of 2024 and it's safe to say that this book did NOT meet my expectations.
Now, if you look at the synopsis of the book, it's batshit crazy and interesting. A psychopath on the loose traveling in parallel universes murdering the same women again and again while a reporter gets caught up in the whole act and ultimately decides to stop him. NOW THAT SOUNDS FREAKING INTERESTING!
Don't get me wrong though, I LOVED so many aspects of this book. While I appreciated the captivating writing style and chilling scenes, I was disappointed by the plot and the ending.
“To me, though, there’s nothing particularly difficult to understand about a man who murders what he loves, and blames her for it.”
• When the way the story is written is so damn captivating, you expect the plot to be amazing too. But the book lacked in that department. So many plotlines could have been explored but weren't. You could see the characters and their inner turmoil throughout the story, which indeed made the characters feel more real and human but by the end, it felt like those insecurities, those emotions weren't resolved and just rushed to completion.
I was pretty shocked by the ending being too damn anticlimactic. On paper, the ending would have seemed apt and maybe it truly was but the execution made it seem too simple. The way you read the whole book to reach the end and wait for it to blow your mind or at least leave you satisfied...this book failed to do either of those for me.
I would like to point out that in no way this is a BAD book, this just failed to meet my expectations.
• Talking about the characters, Felicity, Clay, Maddie, and Hugo-they were written with care and you can see it throughout the story. The buildup of these characters was truly amazing but as I said, it is a shame that their stories felt rushed towards the end. I wish the author would have taken time with the ending and with these characters.
All in all, if you wish to read a fast-paced book that can keep you on your toes, I will recommend this (just don't go in with expectations as I did maybe?)...more

To be extremely precise these were mOooooo Diggity dang dig, Levana is a sick, SICK person who deserves to die! Definitely a must-read before winter.
To be extremely precise these were my thoughts by the end of this book for better insights... "Bitch!!! you fucking bitch...oh my god she killed (a certain character that I loved) WOW I am DONE. I actually felt bad for you Levana BUT you sick motherfucking psychopath...Go die now, I WON'T EVEN THINK TWICE BEFORE LAUGHING AT YOUR DEAD ASS!" I would like to point out I am a very charming person despite the words I used here.
“She was so stupid. Such a stupid, stupid girl. For ever thinking she could be admired, adored, or noticed. For every thinking she could be anything at all.”
One of the major concerns anyone has before reading the backstory of the villain is that they don't end up sympathizing with the antagonist but Fairest in no way does that. Levana lacked a lot as the main antagonist according to me, this book gave her a character at least. She feels more of a twisted person now.
♣It was a quick read but I really wanted...I don't know...more I guess? I felt so bad for Evret you guys, that man was caught in the middle and he didn't even do anything! Evret...my man I am so sorry for ya.
I actually felt quite bad for Levana for almost half of the book. But the things she did after came in handy while hating her even more. I think it is a perfect little story before you read winter, get to know Levana a little better before we finish this series off.
“Levana had not seen the bodies, but she had seen the bedrooms the next morning, and her first thought was that all that blood would make for a very pretty rouge on her lips.”
“Ezra: And then I said it. Interviewer; What did he say? Kady Grant: He said, ‘You picked a hell of a day to dum
I WILL CRY, WHY WAS THIS SO GOOD! *4.25*
“Ezra: And then I said it. Interviewer; What did he say? Kady Grant: He said, ‘You picked a hell of a day to dump me, Kades.”
Honestly, this book was a mixture of "I have no clue what is happening" and "I have SOME clue what is happening and this shit is CRAZY!". I don't think I can summarise this book in a better way than THIS. *proud*
I have A LOT of views on this one so wear your spacesuits. My emotions are so messed up I can't even think straight...all I hear and see are kady and Ezra and maybe AIDEN gets to cameo once in a while.

♣ FORMAT: I have NEVER seen a book written in this format and executed so fucking well! I feel like the hype for this book is too big that everyone knows that the format is different when they start the book whereas I because of a certain miracle was COMPLETELY unaware of what I was getting myself into when I picked up the book. I honestly had to check if I had the same book or some pirated thing.
As the name suggests The Illuminae FILES...this book is a collection of files, reports, camera feeds, audio thingys, case files, emails, and whatever else you can think of. Due to this people often have difficulty getting into the story and because of that this book is a true case of "love it or hate it". But believe me, once you get used to the format, it is an easier transition. And if you end up hating this, I can totally see where you are coming from too. For me, despite the book being in this "files" format, I swear to god this shit had me depressed so many times that I ALMOST cried.
“I am frequently underestimated. I think it's because I'm short.”
I mean getting a bit of information about spaceships wouldn't harm our soul, what if our planet is invaded someday and you need to fly a spaceship. The fictional information you get here can be QUITE useful suckers! I promise the irrelevant information in the starting few hundred pages of the book makes complete sense by the end. (It TOTALLY does even if the book itself doesn't make a ton of sense *that's a joke, this book is very understandable*)

♣ WRITING: The writing is NO JOKE. I can't even begin to imagine how the hell Jay and Amie included emotions and seriously amazingly written proses in a book that is completely based on something so formal (as it seems). The atmosphere of the book—*chefs kiss* PHENOMENAL! The only other book I have read from one of the authors is Nevernight by jay Kristoff and I have also mentioned there how the trilogy holds a different atmosphere in itself as well. You are hanging by your hair while Shit is rolling down. JESUS. how did I even survive?!
“I had no idea how safe I was, because I’d never been unsafe.”
I will agree the first half of the book was a bit monotonous and lacks the thrill. But you can hardly blame the first book in the series to actually take time in creating the world and characters in such a unique way. Even though I was NEVER bored during the first half despite it having information that made me feel stupid and insignificant and useless and idiotic and (jo stop it!)—the second half of the book makes up for almost EVERYTHING! If I had the liberty of binging the second half in 1 go I would have. But despite me taking breaks while reading, the moment I picked up the book again, I was transmitted to that spaceship in an instant.
"Oh, poor baby. Did I hurt the mass-murdering psychopathic artificial intelligence's feelings?”

CHARACTERS: you cannot comprehend how much I love the characters in this book. I freaking fell in love with James who legit came in for a few pages at most! The two main characters Ezra and kady—are smart, sarcastic, not annoying at all, give proper and anticipated reactions to things (i am referring to when someone tells you 'you are a wizard harry' and you are like 'oh nice', I mean bitch I freak out and have a mental breakdown). How can you NOT love these perfect beings!!? The character development...WOW. I mean I am still debating my feelings about the AI AIDEN! But the strength and emotions we see from these characters are mindboggling.
authors please learn from Amy and jay, they created a set of main characters that I don't hate AT ALL.
“That’s so not your business it almost punches clean past the event horizon of Not Your Business and becomes Your Business again.”
I know there are things that went completely over my head but I mean that's the fun of it all, right? I would like to meet a living creature who understood the complete book. HELL, Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman didn't understand what the fuck they wrote. so you aren't in this alone and continue reading, you don't wanna miss this!
This book is a JOURNEY my dear chums and fems and in no way should you miss it. Maybe your tuning with the book takes time to set but once it does...ooohhoooohoooo. This book is definitely a MUST READ and now I have to figure out a way to save some more money to buy this fucker cuz the physical copy is even more beautiful!...more
