I almost dnfed this, and I ended up skimming so much that I just really didn't care at the end what happened to them. The plot was just ridiculous in this one, and it felt stretched out unnecessarily, maybe because of Gar's whining. Such a shame because this had so much potential to be amazing. ...more

To the people who recommended this book to me, shame. I did not enjoy this book at all and it was mostly because of that atrocious trope of "females! We need females!" If I see one more book with that trope, I will BURST! But more than that, it was *how* the trope was executed. Ruby Dixon's Ice Planet Barbarians had that theme, as did Ella Maven's Drixonian series, but why these books/authors excelled and did well for me was because of the way the females were treated and spoken about; they were treated like living beings, valued and adored. I love that, because we already live in a society where women are possessions and objects. I do not need or want to read that shit in books, especially the alien/monster stuff I love. So this did horribly for me because as soon as the women arrive, they were being snatched and taken by the aliens because they're a "boon" and "prize" for the tribes. Tribes were going to go to war over them because warriors could finally break their celibacy and find mates. The whole mate thing seemed like it was forced on the women. Just because a warrior found he had a mate, that's it. The woman had to accept and couldn't do anything about it. The author made great talk about how the females had "a choice to reject" but that's not how the "warriors" behaved, spoke, or thought. The men even talked about how they had a claim over the women WHO THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW OR COULD SPEAK WITH! BRUH! These people talked about the women like they were buying chicken from an auction! YUCK!
I stopped reading this book 4 times, then at the 58% mark, I was skimming pages and only really read the dialogue. The ending was not a HEA for me. For once, I would really love to see a woman stand with her people and fight for more rights and freedom than just being a mate to a warrior. I really hate how quickly and easily these women give up everything and just roll over in scifi books.
Obviously, I won't continue this series. Didn't enjoy the author's writing either, so I'm not sure if I'll read from her again. ...more

From the first chapter, from the very first few pages, the sentence structures and the writing itself really confused me that I often had to do a lot of rereading to understand what one sentence was trying to tell. It wasn't written well. I couldn't imagine anything that happened or the places described, like that damn tree where they met a few times, because the descriptions were just poor. A lot of things that happened honestly didn't make sense, like why he started training her from the very first time they met each other, or why she went to the human royals and became a slave when she's a damn princess? Never mind the fact that she could have shifted and flown away at ANY moment because she could? Honestly a lot of things that happened were just...??? I'm so confused that I honestly don't know what to write. I will say that there were some enjoyable moments in the book, but it was honestly confusing, Opal was one of the dumbest bitches I've read about, and a lot of things that happened made no sense. I almost dnf this book like seven times. ...more

Pestilence was the book that got me into Laura Thalassa. I hadn't read that kind of concept before with the horsemen and all and I instantly got hooked. I finished the first three books in one week or maybe even less. I read them nonstop and stayed up to like 7 am. When I finished Famine I felt like I was dying because Death's book wasn't out yet. This was my MOST anticipated book of the year, but it was a major letdown. I literally stopped reading this book 4 times and read 4 other books during that time. It took me like 2 weeks to finish this one book. Spoilers ahead.
Unlike the other three books that were more slow-burn and full of tension which I LOVED, this book was insta-love. Death's character throughout the first 3 books gave me the impression that he would be serious and more... I don't know, just more. He gave "bad boy" vibes but not like chaotic Famine. Death was wayyy too soft, and he was instantly into Laz way quicker than I expected.
Laz was the WORST of all female leads so far. I hated her so much. I can't even count how many times I rolled my eyes or slapped my forehead or whispered "this bitch". And then there's Ben? The moment she took that boy and started calling him "my son", I took a break from the book and read something else. I have no problem reading about mothers and children, but I didn't go into this book expecting a mother, so this PISSED ME OFF. This was like chapter 30 or something, and before then, I was already having a hard time continuing the book. It just took a really deep plunge from Ben and onwards.
There was too much sex compared to the other books. I don't mind smut, and I enjoy it when it's done well. The smut in this book was okay, but too much. At some point I started skimming and literally rolling my eyes when I realised they'd be banging again.
The "battle" was fun but didn't last long. The ending was shit. Like I'm supposed to believe God gave these horsemen the task to end humanity, but also set them up to fail by giving them women to stop them? The final 90% was just garbage. I only finished this because I wanted to finish the series.
Other than Laz going "my son" every two paragraphs, them banging or travelling, there wasn't much happening. This was the worst and most disappointing of the series....more
