In a world not unlike our own, nations are at war with each other. Citizens are forced into service, there are food shortages, propaganda is spread and even children are enlisted. The genius in this book is that it is hard to tell who the bad guys are and the good guys-- which is the point. The hard part is that I still cannot tell you if this is fantasy-- what/why the girl is doing-- and the giant cliffhanger means this book is unable to stand on its own. I will need to read the sequel to see where the story leads....more

Tris finds herself in the middle of a plot pitting the Erudite against the other factions... and a hidden society of factionless. There is secret information that is so important that people are literally dying to get it and protect it. The book is fast-paced, and even until the end I wasn't sure who the good guys or the bad guys were. Fans of Hunger Games, etc, would enjoy....more

Had me wanting to hoard food, medicine and firearms in our basement just in case. But then I thought to myself, no, I would rather move to Yellowstone and be obliterated in the explosion then to have to die a slow and uncertain death. Such uplifting thoughts, right? Fans of apocalyptic fiction will like it. (Violence and hanky panky make this more of a high school read, as opposed to middle school)....more
