Instead, it is about a girl who moves with her expectant mother to Japan to live in her father's childhood home with her grandparents. Her Japanese Grandparents are dour and simple compared to her American grandparents. I never understood why they didn't live with the mother's parents in California. Seems like an easier solution for everyone. But it did provide insight into Japanese culture and relationships between generations.
It is a story of an American abroad-- trying to fit in being half American and half Japanese. Adjusting to cultural differences. Being tight with money. Coming of age and realizing the adults around you make mistakes, too. Really nothing to do with New York or 9-11 except that is where the family was originally from. I might have liked the book better if I hadn't had certain preconceptions....more
