I enjoyed reading lord Henry's philosophy of life and agree with some of it today (in 2020).
The characters are intriguing. It's about rich, and shallow men who were bored with life in my opinion. They didn't have a lot to do besides visit eachother, a play or the opera. To marry someone for love wasn't common. Keeping up appearances and surrounding yourself with the right crowd was of great importance.
Dorian Gray changes from an interesting young man into a bitter person by the influence of lord Henry. He only loves himself and his personality reflects on his portrait. It's about morals and I understand why people love the story. It also reprimands certain people indirectly which was very bold back then :)
Oscar Wilde described pretty much everything in detail which makes it harder to stay interested in the story. In 1890, this was expected of writers and reading was only for the wealthy. I chose to finish reading the book once I started, but skimmed here and there when minor details weren't essential. I enjoyed it a lot and can't let this change how I feel about the story. 5 stars....more

Some of the readers feel the need to judge the relationship and the needs of Emily. Why? Stories don't have to end well. Life isn't perfect either. How many times have you heard stories of real relationships that are f☆☆ked up?
Would I make the same choices as Emily? Who knows. He doesn't seem to love Emily. She accepts how he treats her. Sound familiar, ladies? Especially in the end when he tells her to leave and later on accepts her return. But no one else understands her. She's messed up. Can you even fathom what captivaty can do to a person?
I like how Kitty Thomas made all of Emily's feelings clear....more

I like how openminded they are sexually and how emotionally distant Kristine is. She's not the helpless female I keep reading about in other books. Kim Corum doesn't use the usual lines that other writers use describing sex. Also a big plus. I give it 5 stars for the characters and the story itself.
The book however contains a small amount of pages. I like the flawed characters, but the lovestory and the background of the male leadcharacter is also cut short. I'm missing a lot of details and it feels like Kim Corum started a race to the finishline. If she'd put more effort Into it, it could've been so much better.
I don't mind reading about abuse in a relationship-that doesn't mean I approve it in real life! It happens in real life as well and it makes the story more interesting. Nothing is perfect. The writer took a risk by releasing this book. That I applaud.
For the money being spend on this book, it could've at least contained 200 pages....more

A few questions came to mind:
Why didn't Dr. Jekyll commit suicide earlier? In his beliefs hell would be on the table any which way you put it. Isn't suicide just a selfish act because Dr. Jekyll is disappearing?
I wonder how bad the personality of Mr. Hyde (or Dr. Jekyll considering he's fully aware all the time) could've been if he only murdered one person and trampled a girl in more than a year....more

Tess is a young girl who wasn't really taught a lot of things by her parents. That's unfortunately not uncommon in that timeperiod and resulted in a tragic life.
I had to re-read a small part to understand she had intercourse with Alec at a young age because of how it was described.
I wanted to take my time reading the book. It's such a sad but beautiful story.
Angel tells Tess about his transgressions yet cannot forgive his wife for doing the same thing. Within weeks he ditches his wife and wants to bring Izzy with him to Brasil, only for a year without marrying Izzy. To live in sin without the community being aware of it. All the while claiming to be honorable he's just looking for any woman to fulfill his needs. He asks Izzy who loves him the most. His feelings towards the women obviously don't matter. When Tess supposedly loves him more, he tells Izzy to forget the whole thing. In my opinion Angel doesn't know what love is. Perhaps that's a result of his upbringing by parents who in that time didn't spend a lot of time parenting. He comes across as arrogant and clueless.
Alec confuses love with lust. Both men aren't any good for her. But this took place in a different time so it's easy to judge today....more
