This felt reminiscent of Carrie Soto is Back, in the way I was so enthralled with the sport and our mc’s winning. The short chapters were excellent and I loved the interview style. The relationship also felt similar to the dynamics of love in tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow which was another five star for me. It took so many concepts I love and combined them into one, ironically making for one of my favourite reads this year.
Will desperately be searching for books with a similar vibe for the foreseeable. ...more

I used ALL of my tabs in chapter ‘get them out’. I was balling my eyes out, the Lynch family is so precious to me. I adored all of the family, and seeing Johnny and his parents with Shannon’s brothers melted my heart. My heart also breaks for Joey and I absolutely cannot wait to get into his and Aoife’s books.
I’m just absolutely in love with this series already I can’t recommend it enough !!! ...more

Suzanne you have done it again. What a masterpiece, I am lost for words.
Haymitch Abernathy you have a very special place in my heart. The whole story, the parallels to Katniss & Lucy Gray, the foreshadowing. Simply incredible. The work of a mastermind.
From seeing Plutarch, Effie, Mags, Wiress, Beetee- to learning to love all the new characters. Literally heartbreaking to read what happened in the games and how it was portrayed.
Even down to Haymitch knowing Burdock, the whole relationship from start to finish meant so much to me.
I cannot even speak about the epilogue. In tears the whole time, seeing Katniss & Peeta, the last page…
& Lenore Dove. Oh how you would’ve loved Lucy Gray. What a sad ending, I was in shock even though I knew it was coming. Such a tragic, tragic story that makes me want to read the whole series again to pick up on these little things.
Words cannot express my love for this world and everyone in it. Suzanne Collins you are truly a genius. ...more
A beautiful and nuanced story. The characters felt real. Raw. Mundane. Insufferable. But, it was real, and it meant something.
I wasn’t going to give A beautiful and nuanced story. The characters felt real. Raw. Mundane. Insufferable. But, it was real, and it meant something.
I wasn’t going to give this book 5 stars originally, but on reflection, how can I not? For a book to simply make me feel the things I did, to think the things I thought, how could it not be 5 stars?

SPOILER ‘or maybe he is closer still: maybe he is that gray cat that has begun to sit outside our neighbour’s house, purring when i reach out my hand to it; maybe he is that new puppy i see tugging at the end of my other neighbour’s leash; maybe he is that toddler i saw running through the square a few months ago, shrieking with joy, his parents huffing after him; maybe he is that flower that suddenly bloomed on the rhododendron bush i thought had died long ago: maybe he is that cloud, that wave, that rain, that mist. it isn’t only that he died, or how he died: it is what he died believing.
and so i try to be kind to everything i see, and in everything i see, i see him.

so, so impressed with this book. i wasn’t expecting to love it as much as i did, but yet it was everything and more! the world was so easy to understand and not too complex to digest, which made the plot all the more better.
LOVE the strong, independent female characters we get to see. this is done perfectly, straying from the typical ‘damsel in distress.’
the writing flows so well and being so fast paced i finished it very quickly, which also heightened my enjoyment. i love the two main characters and the dynamic between them both and can’t wait to read the next one to see how the *conflict* will be resolved…
