This is a lovely little gem of a book. A collection of writings and poetry taking you on a journey through girlhood to womanhood. It’s beautifully written, thought provoking and moving and makes you think through the stages of your own life and thoughts as you read. It has some lovely little illustrations which complement it. There is a simplicity to the work but it manages to handle some very difficult themes with care and kindness. It would be great for teens to read and I even read some out to my son.
Sometimes, You need to go the wrong way, To find the right way.

LOVE, LIFE, LOSS
Today I’m reviewing a poetry collection by Donna Ashworth. Three books Love, Life and Loss. I’ve been dipping in and out of these for the last week and I have to say I’ve loved them all. Love is full of words to remind us of the love in our lives, where it can be found, that it is powerful and so so important. Life covers just that, beginnings, endings, age, all sorts really and it’s been wonderful to sit at the end of the day and read one of these, they bring a sense of peace on the hamster wheel that is Life. Loss was a harder read for me and I have not yet read all of this collection. There are poems for loss in all its forms, I have particularly found solace in ‘There will always be loss’, simple words that speak loud and at the right time are always good.
I will share a little spark of joy for me from Love:
Frosting
Love can arrive wearing many a disguise but never does it look like and expensive gift or a romantic weekend for two.
That’s just frosting.
You’re far more likely to find real love in a cup of tea made just for you exactly the way you like it.
This this is my love, wrapped up in a cup of tea, you know who you are.
Thank you Donna Ashworth for your words, powerful, truthful and long lasting....more

At the end of the seven years, you are a physically and mentally new person. This collection of poems is about heartbreak and healing. Each chapter represents a new stage in the relationship and healing process, and these poems tell the story of a failed relationship and the healing journey that resulted because of that.
I don’t often read and review poetry it has to be said, but I enjoyed this debut collection from Alyssa Harmon. There is a journey to be followed through a relationship, some things I recognised, some I didn’t, but that is relationships for you. I liked the flow of the poems and the connections between them, they clearly mean a lot to the writer. You can feel the power and force of the words lift from the page at times, at others I just smiled with recognition or gasped with the punch to the gut just knowing that feeling.
A great little debut collection, that if you’ve experienced heartbreak you will recognise so much, honest and truthful, a little gem.
Thank you to Alyssa and Booksirens for my copy of this poetry collection to review ...more

The first thing I did before reading this was to go and read the tale of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus as a background to my understanding of these poems. Salmacis, a young nymph, one day spies Hermaphroditus bathing. She is consumed by passion for him, enters the water and begs the gods to allow them to stay together - the two become one - part man, part woman.
I have to admit I found this poetry collection challenging to read. I had to read it more than once to get used to the layout of each poem. Everything is written in lower case, except in the use of the word Being near the end of the collection. This had the effect of slowing my reading down and it made sure I was really reading each word. Space is used within the text to great effect, I felt at times to be able to pause and to breathe and at other to allow the words to flow.
‘i feel like a woman’s words in a man’s book. there but in his voice.’
I found myself almost following instruction in ‘chasing my therapist to a rave in the woods.’ ‘Breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 4, hold for 4.
I felt the strength of ‘ovid tells it best’:
‘this is my lake salmacis and i am the wild nymph with a hollow in her belly and nothing between her legs.’
The writing is lyrical, yet powerful, with visceral imagery that can evoke strong emotion in the reader. There is blood, there are bodies, pain and beauty. The physicality brought me up sharply as if meant to shock, at other points I could feel the tenderness and touching moments. I don’t know that I entirely understood everything here but it has left me thinking about what I know and believe. It has actually given me a sense of rhythm and peace and I will return to this collection again.
I found this challenging, a very powerful poetry collection rooted in myth but exploring very modern themes.
