Why we have so many different family traditions or do things in certain ways depending on where we are from. The illustrations help to open a sliding door for you to travel and leave with each character. It also leave us a message to always work hard, but enjoy life.

This has been so far my favorite historical fiction book. I love how the writer use the verse to the story. I experience this books as a window and part sliding door. Looking through the window and learning about the Vietnam War from a 10-year-old perspective was fun while experiencing a sliding door and putting myself in the situations that Ha went through while learning to communicate in a new language.

I enjoyed reading this book. I think that the illustrations take you back in time. It shows you how the street, house, and people used to live at that time. I choose this book as a historical book. It really shows me the resilience that black people have to have over time. It talks about black people traveling after the Emancipation, and how even after being free they could not enjoy the same liberties of going on road trips without being treated differently.
