Philo, a 14 year old boy from Idaho, discovers a love of science, technology and engineering. Amazed by the radio, Philo hears scientists are working on creating moving pictures, known as television. When he suddenly springs an idea on how one could be built, he works day and night on his idea eventually creating one of the most important inventions of the time.
I think this would be a great book for students doing a research project on the history of technology. I also think this could be used for students to help in creating a timeline of technology.
This was a WOW book for me because I had never heard of Philo Farnsworth or his story. Throughout the story you can see how Philo’s mind works and his thinking process as he works on his invention. Reading about how intelligent he was and how much impact he has had on technology is exciting and such a good read. ...more

Through the power of music and her piano skills, Teresa finds her way, and even plays for one of the most important people of the time period.
I think this would be a perfect read aloud book for middle elementary students. I think this could be used to introduce a lesson on the civil war. I think this could also be used for students to do a research project on historical figures.

This realistic fiction book follows Addie, a 12 year old girl whose life is anything but normal. The story takes you through a challenging time in Addie’s life, from dealing with her dyslexia, to her untraditional family, to her mother’s ‘all-or-nothing’ way of living.
This book talks about some more serious topics, so I would recommend this for 6th grade and up. I think this book would best be suited for independent reading. I would recommend this book to students who enjoy reading realistic fiction, and enjoy chapter books. I think you could also read this in small groups, so students can discuss the events.
This was a WOW book for me because I loved this book growing up. I got lost in Addie’s world, and felt her happy moments, sad moments, and challenging moments alongside her. This is one of those books you can read over and over and love every time! ...more

Three seemingly unrelated characters are all connected by one thing: the same harmonica that mysteriously appears in each of their lives. Through their challenging and suspenseful journeys, music keeps their spirits alive and eventually brings their stories together.
This book gives an interesting and personal perspective on the troubles of WW2, and I think would be a great tool to intersect social studies and language arts to discuss WW2. I also loved reading this book as a part of a book club, and think this could also be done in a 5th or 6th grade classroom book club. The constant twists and turns keep the reader on their toes, and I believe would facilitate great discussions within a book club in an upper elementary school classroom!
This was a WOW book for me because I could not put it down! The perspectives given by the children in the book give such interesting insight to what WW2 was like, and the challenges they face will have you so invested to see what happens next. This is a book I would definitely recommend to any upper elementary student! ...more
