More talking and less action in this volume. The lit-lover in me was excited, but the D&D tank player was a little disappointed. There was the sideplot with Violet, Betty, and the dragon that was amusing but ultimately not super relevant. Basically: Hannah fans will like this one more than Violet fans like me did.
That all being said, this is the first RQ volume I read as it came out in single issues, and as I learned the hard way with watching Battlestar Galactica, mainlining a series in a weekend is a very different experience than having to wait a week or more between installments. I may give this book a revisit in a couple weeks and binge it all at once to see if that changes my feelings about it....more

The good: I enjoyed the art (except issue 12). Star Wars is fun. I like the overall idea of showing flashbacks rather than doing straight 100% backstory, since there's so little information on Kanan that if you just show him as a kid OR just as an adult, I'm going to want whatever you left out.
The bad: The change in artist for aforementioned issue 12 was jarring. Actually, issue 12 as a whole seemed pretty unecessary to the story that was told in the previous issues. Don't get me wrong, I will take all the grownup-Kanan stories I can get, but I feel that they deserve more than a single tacked-on issue at the end of a backstory-development trade.

The artwork and writing are both great. The cast of thousands is pretty well-executed and it's fun to see so many great characters in the story.
The bad: Chin-pube Loki. The rushed-feeling pace of issue #5 (I think this particular storyline might have benefited from one more issue considering all that was going on in #5, but maybe it will makek sense once volume 2 gets going).
(Also I feel the need to note that it's unclear why Thor Odinson is so prominently on the cover of issue #1, and apparently the cover of the collected volume 1, as he's rather conspicuously not present in these 5 issues.)
I always look forward to weeks with new Squirrel Girl. This volume has time travel, third-person-speaking Dr Doom, and THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. Also Dr Doom's custom Doomsembly programming language. Good times.
Also I went ahead and grabbed Howard the Duck #5 because the blurb above claims it'll be part of this collection but... I don't know why? It was a funny enough issue, and I do enjoy Mr Zdarsky's work, but no connection to Squirrel Girl. So.......more

Sure, I'm no superhero, and Jess only has the one baby while I had two, but her experience (especially in issue 5) really resonated with me. The writing is great, exploring so many issues surrounding parenthood/motherhood all while telling a fun knocking-some-skrull-heads yarn. I've been a comics reader for a long time, but I've never had any interest in Spider-Woman... then I saw the cover for #1 with a very pregnany Jess and I decided to give it a try. I am so glad that I did! It's exciting to me that Marvel is taking an opportunity to explore some territory that's not common comics fodder....more

Bit of a cop out in issue 6 but this book clearly has bigger concerns than the killer folk so we shall see where this plot goes....more

I'm also following both Ms Marvel and the new Thor in their solo series at the moment, and enjoying those more than this book. I rather assume that the lack of depth so far is because the team is so new (and many of its members are relative noobs on the superhero scene as well), and I'm hoping this series will find its feet soon....more
