If the MC knew about the war why would he wait that long to have the ballistae constructed?
I found it moronic that the MC would take the banner that will make everybody kill him with his army and even have it unfurled in front of two armies that are bigger than his.. For me that is suicide wish if not for massive plot armour. ...more

It seems ill advised to start the story with the protagonist as an outcast in the present time and then tell his past as a reviled son of a traitor, as there seems not much to look forward to for the reader..
The plot seems somewhat off. A king who loathes the mere sight of the MC still keeps him around and is constantly pissed off by it. The crown prince and his two cousins are way too cosy with him and the MC gets a lot of chances despite his fuck ups. The MC's infatuation story arc with the king's cousin is just suicidal. I kept skimming more and more until I gave up as nothing interesting happened at all.....more

I liked the realistic despiction of the setting with all the petty intrigues and the the failure of the crusade due to greed, arrogance and fanaticism. I also enjoyed the emphasis on the mostly overlooked dangers of sea travel refreshing.
The second half of the book felt a bit weaker, especially the fort scene.
Criticism and comments
I would have enjoyed a bit more world building by Alaric reminiscenting about the crusade before his stand off with the priest. The story that was given felt too bare boned to me.
Oathbreaker is a very contra productive name for an ancestral sword of a noble house.
I found the rape scene on the already half flooded deck in the sinking ship very unbelievable. One would think that the man rather would leave ship through an oar gap than to have a last shag and drown..
The mindless slaughter of the bandits was really moronic as they should have interrogated them..
I found the part about the lumina and the luminary a bit confusing. Their trips names were too similar as well for my taste.
A knife strike in the belly would not kill so fast especially if he hit himself.. i found it bizarre that Alaric would let the scene play out that way..
I found it idiotic that they didn't finish off the sleeping enemies when they had the chance..
I didn't quite understand how the soldiers would climb the pallisades without ladders or ropes and found it unbelievable that the counter attack would work so well with so many bodies lying around. Not to mention the moat and the spikes.....more

Unfortunately, the changes of the plot, especially Dantes past and origin don't improve it. In the original, Dante was innocent. Here he is an anti hero who had his fate coming and somewhat deserved it. I found it hard to sympathise overly much with a drug using, armed robber who is not above killing. Another addition is the constant blatant racism trope which is pushed just too much in the last 15 years. Dantes' druid class provides him with undeserved, unearned, utterly op effects but results in a lot of people being killed unintentionally due to Dante's inexperience additional to those bystanders he gets killed due to bis actions. Thus, contrary to the efforts of the author, i found Dante not to be really likeable. Last but not least i was not too impressed by the inclusion of all these - all too easy approachable - minor gods and the whole god of greed plot which only took away from the main antagonists ' agendas.....more

At that point i lost interest. Let natural selection have it's way..

New POV's should benefit and enrich the story. I found Xander's very short stories to be just distracting. They felt too short, too uninteresting and should have come as a short introduction of the character once/if the character becomes ever relevant. It doesn't help either that Xander is an entitled, selfish, pampered and unlikeable character who seems villain material.
The POV's of the old guys were better but ill timed as well....more

An interlude plot with lots of intrigues, warmongers and a boat trip with a cheap copy of "Jack Sparrow ".
The so called protagonist seems to regress rather than to advance. He is just too stupid and juvenile. Alice also strongly regressed compared to book one. She acts now just like a minion.

By now i really hate how Waldo treats Alice and how utterly learning resistant he is. He still acts like a good but really moronic Momma's boy, striving to do everything to makes his mummy happy while constantly acting like a wilful obstinate and ignorant fool.

Even though there's not much progress of the plot and a definitive Kookie deficit, i loved the book. New enemies, more bounty and more reasons for the best boss award!(not to mention the minor awards for best diplomat and bodyguard..) and new escapades of the hero's soulmate made the book a truly delightful read!

The plot starts very cute. Waldo's bizarre interactions due to his lack of knowledge of the outside world are funny at first. Unfortunately, later on this gets more and more awkward, as he and his companions don't progress and learn and seemingly stay in their original mindset setting, which makes them feel more and more retarded.
By book 3, Waldo's blind refusal to adapt and rethink his "values" made me loathe him. The same goes for the author's obsession with most bouncy part of female anatomy, which just got too much after some time..
Criticism and comments
The concept of a kind but strongly deluded dark mage who tries to be evil, a conservative succubus and even a submissive gay oger is nice. The same goes for the despiction that all societies are flawed and one has to be careful about do gooders. Unfortunately, however, Waldo really seems to be an imbecile..
Waldo's family name was clearly chosen to make one - rather lame- joke..
The first "servant" got cheeky, horny and self-confident way too fast in my opinion given her history and the society she grew up in. She acts way to Western and modern..
The author seems to hate commas before names!
The statements about the numbers of siblings dear grandpa ate variates.
Waldo's siblings weren't proper dark mages, as stated alt one point, as they hadn't passed their tests.

While also being very contagious the majority of people turned into primitive, highly aggressive neanderthal like creatures.
The story starts really slow but gets better with time. There are some twists but most characters are rather two dimensional.
Criticism and comments
I found the killing of the creatures harder to swallow as they are still human-like.
The protagonist starts quite passive but somehow becomes a leader figure. Some decisions- like crossing the big town and going all the way to C. - were rather bizarre.
