I really liked the mix between vampire/immortal and Amish culture. It was a very interesting idea. A couple things bothered me but overall, I enjoyed the story. Annalise was a very strong willed h. She wanted to belong and I could easily sympathize with her situation in life, before meeting Adam. After she met him, she was super feisty, and I appreciated that part of her, not accepting to be someone else for him. I guess I just wish she had been more open minded in a way. Sometimes, she was a bit lunatic, she jumped to conclusions, she refused to listen and started a bunch of arguments. I like when couple communicate better. As for Adam, he was super devoted and caring but had a hard time understanding Annalise’s feelings and the sacrifices she had to make to be with him. They both had their qualities and their faults, and they were clashing quite a bit. I thought that the arguments happened too often and were quite repetitive at times. The story felt stagnant in the middle. They bickered a lot, both having their own beliefs. In the end they do compromise but it was an exhausting journey lol. But they could also be very sweet together, they had their moments. “Why do I feel like I’ve kissed you a million times before?” Overall, I did like the story. I thought I would love it but something was missing. I can't exactly pin-point what, and it's been bugging me. The premise was interesting enough. Gemma lives on Earth, which has mostly been deserted by humans who had the privilege to go to Meeus, a new-ish planet that offers opportunities and a chance for a better life. Gemma lives with her aunt and uncle who don't treat her all that well, and she is waiting for her fiancé Zeke to help her get a ticket for Meeus as he was able to go live there. In the meantime, she works at the prison where each level has different types of inmates (Men, Women, Aliens). The story starts with Gemma who is sent to work on the alien level, something she'd never done before. There, she finds all sorts of aliens and one in particular that catches her attention: Simon. He looks sickly and bony, can't move on his own, seems to be deaf and blind, and can't feed himself. Upon learning that Simon hasn't eaten in at least many months, Gemma decides to help him get in better shape, or at the very least, make sure he doesn't die... Simon was wasting away alone, in the dark, unfed and unwashed, denied basic dignity, and with no one to show him compassion. The beginning had me captivated because Simon's condition was extremely bad. I wondered how Gemma would help him and I appreciated that the author took her time when it came to healing Simon. It didn't happen in a matter of a few days. Care and time was needed, and it made it all more realistic. “But the tracker… ” Gemma pointed to his arm. She never felt so powerless in her entire life. “The tracker is not what’s holding me here.” Overall, I'm not sure I really cared for Gemma's character, which is a bummer because the perspective follows her only. And let me tell you, she is a professional yapper. She talks a lot. I liked her resourcefulness and kindness but nothing really stood out to me. She wasn't very observant and found herself in dangerous situations many times. She trusted people too easily. “Would you kill me if you had to?” “You?” He seemed genuinely surprised. “I kill for you.” As for Simon, I also didn't really care for his personality. He seemed very cold and maybe it's because of the narration (I really didn't like the voice and accent Marnye Young gave him...he sounded like a Neanderthal). Maybe it was meant to be this way, to be subtle, but I really didn't believe that he cared for Gemma. He was dangerous and pragmatic. He always seemed so distant. It was hard to believe they formed a meaningful bond. In the end, we don't get to know much about him. They didn't have much chemistry in my eyes. They seemed more like acquaintances than friends for most of the book. And since the pacing was also pretty slow and the book lengthy, I started feeling a bit bored. There was some action in the prison here and there, the inmates causing disturbances whenever they could but the story was lacking when it came to the romance part. There was also a lot of gratuitous assholery. Most characters were just awful and unlikeable. Ruby was okay, I guess? I didn't connect with anyone. The ending was also very underwhelming, especially when you think about the number of pages there are and what you have to go through to finish it. It felt rushed and incomplete. I feel like I was robbed of a proper happy ending. I wanted my reward for finishing to read the story but the unsatisfying open ending left me feeling a little bitter. ✔️HFN (view spoiler)[H and h have left Earth and made it to the Rix base. And...that's it lol (hide spoiler)] ✔️Standalone ✔️Slow burn ✔️3rd person (focus on h) ✔️Dangerous/Serious H ✔️Kind h ✔️No OW/OM (view spoiler)[ OM: h has a fiancé who went to Meeus but she hasn't seen him in two years. She still holds the hope that he will help her move to Meeus but in a recent letter, she learns that he is married to another woman and that they are expecting a baby shortly. This abandonment prompts h to help H even more. She gets over OM pretty quickly, her mind absorbed by taking care of H (hide spoiler)] ✔️No cheating ...more |

Heart's Prisoner, the first book in this series is something I would easily (and without a doubt) recommend to others. But this one? I sadly can't say the same. The premise had me confused a little bit; I'm not even sure I fully understood. Like, I got the gist but had a hard time picturing what I was reading. The premise, from what I understood was about a crew of humans who had gone on a mission to find civilizations, and had found their way on Lethe Maws, a planet where many species of aliens are forced to work in the mines. They earn credits but to buy their freedom would take an eternity. According to the aliens in charge, Aly, along with her human crew are temporarily stationed on this planet awaiting to be sent home. Or that's what the aliens tell them. For now, they must pull their weight and work in the dangerous mines. On the other hand, Ryziel is a nillium, a proud species, who has been exiled from his world. His goal is to return home and challenge his uncle so his brother could reign and overrule the exile decision. He secretly has been building a ship at the bottom of the mines where nobody ventures because of the dangerous creatures. Anyway, when Ryziel sees Aly for the first time, his Drega stirs and confuses him... The Drega is a beast or more like primal urges that every nillium has within them. Ryziel has it worse than his kin, being dark nillium. This aspect of him was interesting to me but I feel like the author didn't fully develop on it. And I must say, I believe she missed an opportunity there. As for his personality, he was cold, grumpy and serious. It was a bit hard to like him since he was so uptight and indecisive when it came to Aly. I guess he was protective but overall he didn't have the charm I look for in a hero. I wish he had let go sooner of his fears because the push and pull was a bit redundant and a mood killer. A primal, wild fury of power chipping away at his sense of self, bringing the beast to the surface. A mindless, violent creature that only ever saw three choices: Hunt, fight, and—since discovering Aly—breed. As for Aly, she was a mechanic who repaired the dronebots and generators in the mine. She didn't like following the rules and would stray from work occasionally to go draw in her sketchbook. She was naive and sweet, and sure, I would consider her brave at times. I didn't really care for her character, a bit bland. I didn't really like the main characters, and seeing the way they both acted, I couldn't really feel their chemistry on page either. The push and pull didn't help. I liked their initial meeting, it was sudden and mysterious but then afterwards, their encounters were machinal and their conversations kept going in circles. The overall pacing of the story was excruciatingly slow, and I don't believe it needed to have 350 pages, especially when the pace only picks up when there's 20% left to the book. I would've personally cut at least 100 pages from it. It really didn't need to be this long. The only character I really liked was Xilya, a female vrisha who was super awesome. Since I listened to the audiobook, I have to mention my thoughts on the narration. I didn't personally like the voices of either narrators. Heather Costa's voice sounded very strained in this one, her other works seem more bearable so I don't know if it was just a rare occurrence of having a cold; but it wasn't pleasant to my ears. It was also difficult to follow who was talking because she didn't really switch intonation in between characters. Jeffrey Kafer was okay (I preferred his reading) but same as Ms. Costa, not much intonations. I was also disappointed that it wasn't a duet narration. They both read their own chapters fully (male and female characters alike). Never mixing. In my opinion, I don't see the point of having two narrators if they don't work together. ✔️HFN/HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: h is close to giving birth. But it seems that, before being enslaved, him and h had been intimate on their ship. But it is just alluded. OW: Not sure if it was a dream or a memory, but H seems to recall an encounter with an OW from his world. The OW tried to get close to him but he is not allowed to be intimate with anyone as he is an assassin. The memory (or dream or both) quickly shifts to show h in the place of OW. I'm not sure what didn't click for me here though, but there are a few things I want to comment on. The characters were okay, I suppose? I just couldn't connect with them. Especially with Olivia. She'd been abducted (I mean, acquired...) by an alien commander who has for objective to rescue humans from a human trafficking space cruise. He needs her knowledge as a behavioral analyst (or something like that) to teach him, so he can pretend to be a connoisseur in human slaves who tries to buy slaves as a cover, as part of the rescue mission. The premise was somewhat interesting, but I just didn't like how easily Olivia got on board with helping the aliens. I mean, she just got abducted from her home, learned that she can never see her family ever again, or Earth at all, and she pretty much has no emotion about it. She got over it so quickly. Less than 48h later, she is pretty much a part of the crew. I just...I don't know. Atarian was a bit boring. Like, he was protective and serious but lacked something to really intrigue me. PomPom, the little alien child was an 'exposition tool' in this story, which was quite annoying to read. I also wasn't a fan of the first person POV for her but third person POV for him. Also the writing wasn't my style. Why not keep everything first POV or third POV? But that's probably just my own preference. It was a bit confusing to follow. One detail that I did like was how the humans abducted for sex trafficking weren't just human women (like so many other stories with the same concept). The humans were from all ages, all races, women, men, teenagers, elderly, children; which elevated the stakes and how horrifying and heartbreaking the situation may be. So yeah, this books didn't click with me. I think there might be some more interesting parts in the story later on, but the beginning doesn't speak to me at all. I find it hard to immerse myself, and like the main character. Maybe I'll come back to this book eventually. Safety up to 31% ✔️Standalone part of a series ✔️Dual POV (view spoiler)[Her (1st person), Him (3rd person) (hide spoiler)] ✔️MC's age (view spoiler)[They both seem like 30-ish in their respective species age (hide spoiler)] ✔️Protective/ Broody H ✔️Strong h ✔️No cheating ✔️No OW/OM ...more |

I loved the cover art, but I wasn't all that intrigued by the blurb, so I kind of just forgot about it. Now that I finally got to read it, I don't regret picking it up. I had a very good time following Zoey and Rendash. What I liked about Zoey was how human she was. She struggled with her weight, her self-image, had doubts and fears, etc. There was always good reasoning to her actions. On the day she met Rendash, she was at her absolute lowest (lost her job, her rent was due with a notice of eviction, found her boyfriend cheating on her, and other shit on that pile of shit) and so, I wasn't surprised on how well she dealt with having an alien in her backseat. The girl has nothing else to lose, her day literally can't get any worse. She was selfless, kind and strong in her own way. “She’d always been on the plump side, with a larger backside and thighs, heavier breasts, and a little extra around her middle.” As for Rendash, super cool hero. I loved that he had powers. The fact that he could cloak himself to be invisible really helped the plot. I think it would've made the adventure much more tedious if they were forced to stay in the wild or something. The fact that he could hide in plain sight gave them the opportunity to stop at motels and gas stations on their road trip. I loved how protective he was of Zoey and also the fact that he found her attractive no matter her size. To him she was beautiful, and it was really heartwarming to see them fall in love. Also, I don't know if that's because I'm so used to weird Alien-Human romances, but his appearance was actually pretty hot. I mean, some people may be put off by a male with four muscular arms, but hey, I say he can do a lot with that! (view spoiler)[ [image] (hide spoiler)] “I will always see you, kun’ia. And you are beautiful.” Anyway, I loved their chemistry, the road trip was entertaining enough; it allowed them to get to know each other. Character development was pretty sweet also. Other than that, pretty solid book. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[A few months after leaving Earth, they are on H's planet, and h is pregrant with his child (hide spoiler)] ✔️Standalone ✔️3rd person dual POV (view spoiler)[ Focused on one character at a time, alternating each chapter. An orc clan who liked to diminish and bully him for being a halfling. Living everyday trying to prove himself, he'd come to accept he would never be valued in the eye of his tribe, and would never belong in the human world due to his appearance. When some orc from his clan brought back a human woman, Sorcha, from the slave traders and Orek is in charge to watch her tent until they can gift her to the chief, Orek doesn't think twice to save her, as he knows that her fate would probably be worse than what his mother went through. The current chief being much crueler than his father was before he got defeated. If after being saved Sorcha is wary, it doesn't take her long to realize Orek is her best way to get back home to her family safely. I took a while to read this book only because I was so busy with life. Had there been an audiobook version, I would've finished it in a day or two. I sadly couldn't find the time to sit down, and only could read a couple chapters before bed. If I'm being objective, I don't think everyone will like this book, mostly because of the pacing and how lengthy this book is. I also believe it didn't need to be 450+ pages but I also personally enjoyed how the author took the time to flesh out the plot, the characters, the relationship, the worldbuilding, etc. Sorcha was the river and he was caught in her current. He never wanted to come up for air. I really liked Sorcha. She was brave and strong, but also kind and sweet. When it comes to her appearance, I liked that she was curvy and tall for a woman. And because she was tall, the height disparity between her and Orek was just perfect. She wasn't squeamish nor did she make stupid decisions to drive the plot. She also knew what she wanted and she was the one who made the first move after observing that Orek might feel the same attraction she did but just didn't know how to approach her or if she would accept him. Her personality made so much sense considering she's the first born of a big family and had to help her mother in raising her siblings from a young age, and taking care of the farm animals while her father was mostly absent due to his duty. His possessiveness over this human woman had awoken the beast sleeping inside him, and now that it was awake, its entire focus was her. As for Orek, he was such a cinnamon roll, ready to protect Sorcha at all cost. Growing up lonely and bullied by the Orc clan for being a halfling, he never felt like he belonged anywhere. When he met Sorcha, who'd been bought from a slaves trader, and understood that her fate would be the same as his mother's if he didn't do anything, he didn't think twice to help her escape. For most of the story, he was a blushing mess in front of Sorcha as he was inexperienced with females, and because he found her to be very pretty. Her proximity also brought up deeper feelings of possessiveness and attraction within him that he didn't know how to process, and his 'beast' side started claiming Sorcha as his mate pretty quickly. He didn't talk much at first, not knowing what to reply to Sorcha's constant talking, but loving the sound of her voice. Orcs were covetous creatures, and he coveted her so fiercely, he already knew there was no turning back. Probably knew it before even tugging his cock to her for the first time. Overall, their relationship was so enjoyable to follow. If it started with wariness from Sorcha's perspective, they became friends before falling in love. The attraction didn't suddenly happen, it was progressive and cute. I also adored Sorcha for the way she coaxed Orek and taught him how to be intimate. It felt very organic and hot; Orek getting more confident and bold which each scene. “If my mate wants assurance, then I’ll give it. As much as she needs.[...] Now,” he purred, “I mean to assure my mate as much as she can stand.”-Orek But the best part, for me at least, was how the story didn't just revolve around the romance and when they would get under the sheets. I really appreciated how the author took the time to develop her characters and show their growth. Both of them go on a journey to find themselves and heal from what is weighting on them. Orek having to deal with that feeling of rejection and abandonment from his mother and clan, while Sorcha had to learn to rely on others and stop carrying the burden she thought she had to carry for her family. It's always a delight when an author gives more depth to their characters. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogie: 1 year later, H anh have built their home and are now getting married. I heard some good things about it and I thought, why not start from the very beginning? To understand all the references and possible characters? Now I understand that Warriors of Luxiria was, I think, the author's first series of books so I'll try not to be too harsh but it was very hard for me to finish this first book if I'm being honest. It wasn't that the plot was bad per say, but it was terribly generic and boring. Essentially, it was every alienverse premise with an abducted woman who was sold to some alien male who would happen to be her fated mate. While the hero tried to make her understand they were meant to be, the heroine was hell bent on going back home. Generic stuff. But fact is, even if it is overly used, I actually like this premise but I also like when the author builds around it and give an original spin to it. Here, there was no real worldbuilding and not much character development. I couldn't stand Kate. If at first, when she was naked and chained in the pit, she seemed to be down to earth and practical, she revealed herself to be wishy-washy pretty quickly in the same chapter. She was stubborn, whiny and horny. She had the worst case of body betrayal. Her inconsistency is what bothered me the most. Her moods constantly changed. One minute she was defiant, the next she would be horny, then she would feel betrayed and annoyed, then she would teach Vaxa'an how to kiss, just randomly? To being stubborn again, to making a deal, to feeling horny, and so on. And all of this happening within a few days. Intimacy happened almost immediately. She wasn't very smart either. “Now, what do you mean you’re the ‘leader of your people.’” He means he's the leader of his people ...more |

Now a political pawn, a bargaining chip, she has to stay out of trouble and conform to the Guild's and the King's rules. Even if she's a captive, she is valuable and is to be treated well. When the Guild requests for her to marry the King, she isn't thrilled at first, but after thinking it through, it might be her chance to find her purpose and help the abducted human women in her own way. To Sikthand, having to marry Sophia might be the worse situation for him as his obsession for her keeps growing by the day, destroying his resolution and melting his icy walls. He was enamored with the human. Though he’d forced himself to remain in the shadows for the past two days, he’d given up trying to keep away from her. He liked watching her. He craved it. It calmed something in him. I loved Sophia. She was one of those heroines who is sweet and kind, yet strong in her own way. Even in moments of weakness and pain, she would bounce back and try to be positive. After learning a little bit more about Sikthand, she understood why he was the way that he was and could eventually see through his thick armor and cold behavior. I loved how she was able to get under his skin in such a pure and innocent way, which definitely made it difficult for him to not fall in love. He didn’t want her to come speak to him because he so desperately wanted her to come speak to him. I'm going to say it right now, I loved Sikthand more than any other heroes in this series. He was perfect to me. On the surface, he was a cold and harsh King who didn't want to be seen as weak or trust the wrong people, especially since he'd been betrayed so many times in the past. Deep inside, his obsession for Sophia, his internal battles to keep himself away from her, the torment, the sheer desperation to get closer and be accepted, yet not fully able to trust was...I have no words. I loved it. It was so raw. Even with his strong armor, he was quickly enamored by Sophia, fascinated even. He couldn't keep himself away. And although Sikthand didn't want to show it directly, he was caring and protective of Sophia. Also very jealous and possessive. He was a broken soul and even if it took him a while to let Sophia get closer to him, it was all worth it. I also loved that he had a fake mirror between his room and Sophia's. He would watch her, obsess over her from the shadows, even stalk her using the secret passages all around. What can I say, I have a thing for obsessed male characters in books. His attraction for her almost drove him crazy, and that combined with his paranoia of being betrayed, and truly wanting to trust her, it was such a tense mix. “No. I don’t bend.” Sikthand’s eyes drifted to the mirror. Truth rose like acid in his throat. “But I could break for her.” From enemies to lovers, their relationship was beautiful. It was slow burn but with this type of development, it had to be this way. I'm glad the author didn't rush anything. Thankfully, the whole politic side of the main plot was captivating and I found it difficult to put this book down. One of the scenes near the end was so very desperate, meaningful, beautiful and truly unexpected. It broke me in the best possible way and cemented my love for this couple. I want to talk about it but I don't want to spoil it. It honestly makes me want to read this book all over again just to feel all of it again, the build up, up to it. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: It's H and h's wedding (and h's coronation), and they also announce that they are mates (hide spoiler)] ✔️Standalone ish (view spoiler)[Better to read the other books in order to get the whole context (hide spoiler)] ✔️Fated mates ✔️Enemies to lovers ✔️Dual POV (view spoiler)[3rd person, alternating focus (hide spoiler)] ✔️MC's age (view spoiler)[H's age is not mentioned but he must be in his 30s. Although he did ask h why she kept him from having OW2 in his bed, I don't believe he would've followed through, as h was always on his mind OW3: (We learn that early on) This OW3 is a woman who betrayed H and attempted to have him assassinated. She is the main reason he doesn't trust people. He was in love with her because she made him think she was his mate by faking the initial recognition. Mind you, recognizing a mate hadn't been seen for hundreds of years at the time so it was a pretty exceptional event for it to happen, and H had no reason to believe it was fake. When his spies discovered that OW3 only planned to kill him and become Queen, he sent her away and she died shortly after. He keeps a tattoo of her name on his arm as a reminder to NEVER let anyone close to his heart ever again. He doesn't love her anymore, and doesn't keep the tattoo out of love (Also, tattoos in Vrulatica are made of magnet powder of some sort and can be removed, or remodeled, they aren't permanent) I would normally hate a H who keeps a tattoo of his ex but I found it didn't bother me at all (hide spoiler)] ✔️No cheating ✔️Slow burn (view spoiler)[They kiss around 40%, Foreplay around 60%-80% and their first time is at 90% (hide spoiler)] ✔️Separation (view spoiler)[3 days, which lead to the best scene (hide spoiler)] ...more |

Now prisoner, he has to work in the mines, creating passages and finding valuable rocks. On the other side, we have Katie, a woman who had been abducted by aliens when she was only fifteen years old, over a decade ago. She was rescued by a kind species who offered her to buy her freedom by working her worth. When the ship of the Prince she works for crashes on the prison planet, she is the only one who isn't captured. And the only one who can attempt to save them all. But she won't do it alone. After infiltrating the prison, she finds Maladek, who promises to help her if she helps him get out of his cell first... She couldn’t make heads or tails of this guy—grunty and domineering one minute, then dropping bones at her feet like an eager hound the next. It was a fun little story. I was happy to know that Maladek was okay after his sacrifice in the previous book. He was quite mysterious and grumpy in Using Fejo but you could see he had a really soft side to him. In this short novel, he was absolutely besotted with Katie, longing for her proximity and her love. He was super protective and possessive. He couldn't help himself but purr every time she touched him or was close to him. He was the definition of a big teddy bear. “You must understand. If you had not survived, I would not survive. I will follow you anywhere, Katie. Whether it be to Betuhines, to Earth, to the afterlife. Our souls are bound.”-Maladek I really liked Katie. The fact that she lived so long in space made so she didn't have all those preconceptions with what was presented to her. After so many years, she had adapted to her new life and even felt like she belonged more in space, as she had spent half of her life there. She was sweet and brave, honest and accepting. After buying her worth, she decided to keep working for the royal family as they were kind to her, and mostly because she didn't know where to go. She had a strong need to find someone who would love her and be compatible with her. In the past, she had tried finding a mate, only to be met with disappointments. When she realizes she is attracted to Maladek, she worries a bit that they are not compatible but quickly find out that's definitely not the case. “I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.” They had a nice chemistry. It was a little bit of an instalove, mostly because Maladek's mating marks appeared right after he caught Katie's scent. Even before seeing her with his own eyes. He was ready to do anything for her to make her love him. It took a little bit more time with Katie but she was soon pretty charmed by Maladek. It was just a sweet love story between two fated mates, mixed with smut and some action. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: They make it to Tetran, H's home. h is pregnant and they live happily. To keep the peace and satiate the cities' curiosity, the Queen of Tremanta sends a party of willing women who will be touring and meeting in those cities. Meg is one of them. She is excited to put her past behind her and to find her true self. On the other side, Maxu is called once more to participate in the matchmaking ceremony. But again, he has the perfect plan to make himself illegible for another year: messing with the vehicules of the tour. When his plan actually works and he is arrested, he can't help but feel relief. That's until he catches the scent of one of the women on the tour, and his mating marks appear on his writs. Only, the people arresting him have had enough of his little schemes and although his mating marks are very visible, he'll have to serve some time in jail before he can be with his mate. Even if he didn't see her face, the need to be near her will gnaw at him, and when he's out of there, there's no where she can go he won't find her. I really liked this installment. I'd say close to equally as Choosing Theo. Something about the dynamic between Meg and Maxu really charmed me. I would say, things weren't perfect between them, and at first, you'd think they wouldn't be all that good for each other; one didn't want anything to do with marriage, due to religious trauma and her need for independence, while the other was very commanding and didn't let himself be vulnerable. But, I really liked how they learned to trust each other. Someone sweet. Someone who gave her compliments and found flowers that matched her eyes and sent her romantic messages. That was what she wanted. Instead, she’d ended up with a temperamental demigod who did little more than growl at her, issue commands, steal her sex toys, and plow through every boundary she erected. Meg was an interesting heroine and it was easy for me to find her relatable. Coming from a religious family who forced her to marry her first boyfriend/hookup, she was stuck with a husband she didn't love and who didn't really value her either. On Earth, she wasn't allowed to have a job or money of her own, and was completely reliant on her husband. Getting abducted by aliens was an opportunity for her to find and become her true self, without having to feel guilty. She was now free to make her own decisions. Personality-wise, I would say she was very curious and feisty. And especially stubborn with Maxu, to his dismay. “Hear me, Meg,” Maxu growled. “You have no husband. You are not married. And unless you want that male found and gutted, you won’t speak another word of it.” As for Maxu, he had a strong temper, was very commanding and dominant. His emotions felt rough and so raw due to his Half-Traxian blood, which I really liked. And even though his emotions were like a storm, he tried very hard to control himself, to give Meg the space she requested. Because Meg was his mate and he couldn't stay away from her, he stalked her and felt very protective of her. If you like a caveman hero, he definitely fits that category. “Stop flailing, or I’ll throw you over my shoulder.” The way their relationship started and how it developed was great. Definitely one of he best relationships in this series. They had to learn to be vulnerable, trust and communicate with each other. And I thought their bond became something stronger than the other couples we've seen so far. Their banter was fun and sweet most of the time. I have to admit, I read some of the bad reviews and was a bit wary because of them but after reading this book, I can only say that I don't share those reviewers' critiques. ✔️HFN/HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: 1 week later, it's a bit of a cliffhanger on the main plot because of the events at the end but they are safe and well. The only problem is that she is not allowed to go back, as per rule of Class 4 Planets that are still deemed not advanced enough to properly travel space, and should be left alone until they can. Vanessa and her friends work out a plan for her to meet with a captain willing to illegally bring her back to Earth. But how will she get from Clecania to that port without being detected? When Fejo, the captain of a ship, participates in the matchmaking Ceremony to find a wife that will be ready to travel in space with him, Vanessa finds her ticket... I took some time to write this review as I was trying to put my thoughts together. Did I enjoy the premise? Absolutely not. I've never liked when characters manipulate others to achieve something, ignoring the hurt they can cause, and will cause when the truth comes out. This constant feeling of when the ball will drop is awful because you know it's coming one way or another. It's just a question of when and where. So the first half of this book was pretty dreadful to me. BUT did the story get any better in the second half? Yes. And thank God it did. Which is the main reason why I was able to push through and even enjoy some parts of the story. Although the transition mid-way was pretty jarring and didn't make much sense, it was most welcomed. “I can’t let you go, Vanessa,” he growled into her skin. “I know you don’t feel it, but you’re mine now. I’m yours. I can’t… I won’t…” My biggest issue, and you've probably guessed it by now was Vanessa. She was super gloomy and bitchy. This heroine was everything I dislike in a main heroine. Although the reason as to why she wanted to return to Earth so badly was valid, I just feel like the way she manipulated and lied was pretty despicable, no matter how she kept saying she felt guilty for doing so. She was stubborn and in a way, very selfish. The pretty jarring transition that I was talking about is actually her reaction to being Fejo's mate. Of all the heroines in previous books, she had to be the one who was super understanding of it and who accepted bond without any push back. How frustrating is that? I thought she'd be the last one to even consider it, because, wouldn't being mated only complicate things for her who wanted to go back to Earth at all cost? BUT, after the first half of the book that had drained me of all energy, I wasn't going to complain since Vanessa finally and magically became more bearable and reasonable. “I can’t wait to see that fire in you flare when I finally have you under me.” As for Fejo, I also had a hard time to like him at first. He was very confident and cocky but not even in a charming way. He was also a bit of a player before meeting Vanessa. He participated to the matchmaking Ceremony every time he could even if he was never chosen to be a husband, but he'd still have his fun before leaving to do his work in space, for months. The brides were only picking him for the 'testing', which allowed intimacy and touching. (Yes, more people using him and not choosing him). Even if he knew deep down there wouldn't be a female who would ever pick him since most brides didn't want to travel in space, he still craved to be chosen every time. Therefore, when his dream finally came true, he was absolutely elated and wanting to prove himself. Too bad the one who picked him was also using him. You can only imagine his reaction when he learned the truth. Thankfully, when his mating marks appeared, he became pretty likeable. He was able to be himself, and he was a generous lover, protective and possessive. He could finally have someone. A companion. Someone who didn’t look at him and only see what they could get. I really don't know what to think of this book. I like this series, even if it can be frustrating at times but this one was just not my cup of tea at all. The main characters had a nice chemistry in the second half but in the first half I didn't feel the tension or desires between them. I feel like it could've been a very good story, especially with this newer setting happening in space. I just couldn't get behind the whole manipulation trope. And it wasn't only the heroine but also some side characters as well. ✔️HFN (view spoiler)[Epilogue: With the help of H, she is able to back to Earth and do what she wanted to do. (hide spoiler)] ✔️Standalone ✔️Fated mates ✔️Dual POV (view spoiler)[3rd person, alternating focus (hide spoiler)] ✔️MC's age (view spoiler)[Not mentioned. h is probably in her late 20s. Craving to be loved, he wanted OW1's affection and they were intimate at times. But it was until he realized she was just using him. She was also pretty mean to him, laughing at the fact he didn't have wings and how he would never find a bride. He kept working for her because she had something on him, blackmailed him. In the beginning, he does meet her to get the new job, and he pretends to look at her with desire so she doesn't realize she doesn't have that sort of power over him anymore. OW2: During the testing Ceremony, some weirdo OW2 barges in on H and h while they are kissing during the testing, because she wanted to 'test' H like every time she was up for matchmaking (with never the intention of choosing him btw, just to have fun). But this time, she is also interested in h as well, whom she finds fiery and interesting. So I guess she was offering a threesome of some sort which the h refused by leaving them alone in the room. The H then rejected OW2, didn't do anything with her. (hide spoiler)] ✔️No cheating ...more |

When Alejandra, aka Alex wakes up by the river, she is alone and doesn't know what to do. A smart little creature she decided to name Wilson seems to like her and feeds her, helping her find her way in the forest. When she is attacked by a big predator, she is saved by Auzed, the Head Guard of the Pearl Temple, who was sent to retrieve her. Only, they can't go to the Temple just yet, as they happen to be on Sauven territory and the sauvenians refuse to let them go. Alex is the first human they found on their territory and they want her to become a citizen of Sauven rather than Tremanta where they are keeping all the women. The only way for Alex and Auzed to be free from the sauvenians' demands is to pretend they are to be married. Alex was definitely one of the heroines in this series that I liked the most, with Jade. She was a bit of a sunshine trying to stay positive and she seemed pretty sweet. Because of her passion being movies, she referenced to them quite a bit. It wasn't annoying but I think I would've preferred she toned down on that a bit. When I'm reading sci-fi stories, I don't really want to think about modern stuff on Earth. But that's just my preference. Other than that, she was quite adaptable to her environment and kind. I liked the fact she would tease and tempt Auzed. She really was the kryptonite to his control. “You don’t strike me as the commando type, Auzzy.” I really liked Auzed. He was super uptight and grumpy, a very fun contrast to Alex's more happy personality. Even though he didn't want to admit it, he was falling hard for her, wishing they could marry for real, wondering if she would stay with him. It was quite endearing to see this male, who always had control of his emotions, be so clueless on how he should act with Alex, whom he found extremely attractive. He was possessive and jealous. No matter how hard he’d fought against it, he’d bonded to Alex, and now his possessive side would not shut the fuck up. Overall, they had a nice chemistry. I really liked their intimacy moments, which was hot and passionate. Their feelings and attraction deepening while they were in a (somewhat) forced proximity. It seems to be the formula that the couples in this series are very attracted to each other right away but then mid-way through or near the end, they try to reason themselves that they shouldn't be together or, can't be together, adding a little bit of angst and drama. Delaying the inevitable is fine but it gets a bit repetitive. BUT, I feel like in this one the author did it right. The reason behind their separation was understandable and I loved everything about their reunion. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: 2 months later, h is thinking about telling H she would like to have babies with him (hide spoiler)] ✔️Standalone ✔️Fated mates ✔️Dual POV (view spoiler)[3rd person with alternating focus (hide spoiler)] ✔️MC's age (view spoiler)[Not mentioned (hide spoiler)] ✔️Grumpy/ Possessive H ✔️Sunshine/ Sweet h ✔️No OW/OM (view spoiler)[ OMs: h is supposed to let OMs approach her to talk to her and the H gets possessive but nothing happens (hide spoiler)] ✔️No cheating ✔️Slow burn (view spoiler)[60-70 ish (hide spoiler)] ✔️Separation (view spoiler)[about 1 week (hide spoiler)] ...more |

The plot picks up after **2.8/5 stars** The story follows Lily, a young woman who has been abducted by aliens just like the other women in this series. The plot picks up after Alice, heroine from Freeing Luka, helps the group of woman to escape the testing facility. After seeing Alice get taken away by a strong scary male (Luka), Lily decides to take her chances in the forest rather than staying out in the open to be taken away once more. She leaves the other women with Alejandra and putting the survival skills she learned from her parents, they survive in the wild for weeks...Until an accident happens and they get separated. On her way to get back to her friend, she meets a handsome alien named Verakko, in the most unbelievable circumstances. He is resolute to help her in the search of her friend, but can Lily trust him? This was poorly summarized by me but I tried my best. The plot is getting thicker and I don't really want to spoil anything important in the open. Anyway, you get the gist of it. This book had its ups and downs. I didn't dislike it but I did feel frustrated at times. It could've been so good but I had an issue with the main characters. Let me start with Lily: Right from the start, Lily appeared to me as an independent and resourceful young woman. Growing up with parents whom preferred the wild to the city, she learned many survival skills and could easily take care of herself should she ever end up being stranded. I really did admire those qualities at first because it showed how competent and adaptable she could be. The main reason why I grew to dislike her overall is mostly because of how stubborn she was on many aspects. She didn't have the open-mind I thought she would have. She was stuck with what she knew on Earth and never really let herself open up to new societal standards or culture. She was offended all the time, argued all the time, jumped the gun all the time and misinterpreted things...you guessed it! ALL.THE.DAMN.TIME. And it truly got redundant to me half-way through. Her stubbornness caused unnecessary drama and angst and as much as I understand she might've felt lost on a strange planet, I thought she would eventually adapt, as it seemed to be her best quality at first. And at this point, I don't care if it's unrealistic to have a character be so willing to open up easily to the situation they are put into, but it's definitely more pleasant to follow a character who eventually adapts and embraces said new situation. “I won’t be trapped.”-Lily (This simple quote caused so much angst and I hate it) Now for Verakko. I saw in the reviews that people were mad that he omitted the truth to Lily a few times. Before even meeting Lily, he'd signed a contract to be bethroted to a female that his mother chose, as per the standards of their society. (More on his fiancée in the list of safeties below, but let me reassure you here, she's very nice) When Verakko met Lily, he felt that strange attraction that he suspected was a matebond. Although he had that impression, the marks on his wrists were not visible and his eyes hadn't changed colors, which meant, he was still uncertain that he recognized Lily as his mate. And he still had to be married to his fiancée per contract. Also, he couldn't ignore Lily who seemed so closed to the Clecanian culture, and who wanted her independence at all cost, Verakko was left with barely any reasonable options. Honestly, I'm not even too mad about the things he'd omitted because he was literally in a chokehold with the laws of his city, his contract and Lily's unwillingness to 'be trapped'. Anyways, overall, as a character, he was playful and protective while also a little bit grumpy. “You don’t hear me complaining every time the scent of arousal floods your cunt.”-Verakko The banter between Verakko and Lily at the beginning was very promising. We had this independent and efficient woman who wanted to do and could do things on her own, while a protective male wanted to be useful to her and provide something, anything. But, that banter that I enjoyed at first quickly morphed into something more similar to arguments than anything else. It was repetitive, and the back and forth wasn't pleasant or fun. It was always the same conversation, the same cultural differences clashing. I just wanted their love to eventually bloom somewhere and it took so long for Lily to open up her heart and finally accept Verakko. Although I understand what the author was trying to do, Lily didn't need to be so stubborn this long. The smut on the other hand was very hot, it's just unfortunate there weren't many scenes (I wonder why). I'm honestly a little disappointed by this book. Every little problem or misunderstanding seemed to put some distance between the two characters who were apparently fated mates. I wish everything had gone more smoothly between them. Of course, a little bit of drama here and there is fine, but a whole book of that is just exhausting and not super enjoyable. It's not how I expected the story to go at all. As for my highlights of this book, I'm not sure I will post them. I grew so frustrated near the end that I started insulting Lily in my notes. Yet, I still don't consider her as an heroine I would hate but gosh I wished to slap some sense into her a few times. ✔️HFN (view spoiler)[Epilogue: 2 months later, they move to Tremanta to be closer to the mated couples we've seen in the other books. The OW and H are bethroted under contract for practicality, in the optic of eventually having some children. Both aren't interested in each other in a romantic or really physical way. H accepted the contract only because it's the customs and OW only accepted the contract because she had to get married. It's hinted that OW has feelings for another, but can't be with him due to his status of traitor and her status as the future Queen. When OW learns of the possibility of H having found his mate, she is not hurt or insulted and she actually hopes for his happiness. At no point in time was she ever catty or nasty towards h, and she never belittled her. She was nice and understanding and made sure h was comfortable. Honestly I wouldn't mind seeing OW again. It was written by a French Canadian author, so if you can read French, I would highly recommend reading it. It's the story of Véronique, a teenage girl who gets a babysitting job in Ontario for the summer. It's a sort of immersion for her as she is learning to be more comfortable speaking in English and she'll be able to teach the four year old boy she's watching over to speak some French as well. But she never expected there would be a much older son around. Thierry, who has lost the ability to see, struggles with his new life, secludes himself and refuses to see anyone. Will Véronique be able to get him out of his shell? I was looking through my bookshelf and when I saw the cover, it reminded me how obsessed I was with that story back then. The characters are likable, the romance is super cute and well done. It's too bad that it hasn't been translated to English, I feel many people would like it. Just felt like giving this book some love ^^ ...more |

I'm not sure if this book is supposed to be the second one or the third one, as Amazon and Goodreads don't seem to place it in the same spot. I personally consider it as a the second volume, as I noticed the main character in this one, Roc, appeared as a secondary character in Gravel and Grit. In Hard as Rock, we follow Roc a Khargal-Human hybrid who grew up on Earth and been living for centuries, trying to blend in the society but hiding his inhuman features. His sire, Petronus crashed with other Khargals on this planet centuries ago without a way to get rescued. Making a life there, he found a mate and had a baby that we know to be Roc. After the death of his mate, Petronus went into duramna, which is a sort of stone hibernation, leaving Roc alone in this world. When news come that a sigil is somewhere located in Canada, that rescue is coming at last, Roc decides to find it for his father, who may wake up and see his home again. As for the other side of the story, we have Meline a woman who lost her parents just a year prior, who decided to travel and dive into her family's history/origins. She finds herself in Canada, at Chateau Frontenac. What she doesn't know is that this trip may be more eventful then she signed up for... Roc was a bit of a player, surrounded by clichés that he's had many women but never had a relationship. He was a little bit cocky and smug overall, but not in a seductive way, in my opinion. Something about him just didn't make me like him all that much at first. He did grow on me eventually but not enough to make me truly like him. “I’m an asshole. I’ve had more one-night stands than one man should, and you’re too sweet to do that to.”-Roc As for Meline she went through a lot of personality change during those...three days? She started as a clumsy and somewhat shy woman who wasn't particularly unpretty but very nondescript (as Roc put it while comparing her to the blonde bombshells he usually goes for at parties and pubs...nice!). I thought I liked her at first but the more I read about her, the less she made any sense. Roc knew it was selfish, but he rarely let women touch him, for obvious reasons. But Meline wasn’t just any female. Although maybe he should’ve tied her up. Her mere touch did things to him, made his blood boil. Not only were his canines throbbing but so were the talons that tipped his wings. It was a completely foreign sensation. I didn't think their first encounter was all that great either. I hated the costume party for a fundraiser, with the demon and angel cliché. It just seemed weird to add this to this plot. I understand Roc has tried to blend in all these years, but to be so reckless as to show his true nature to humans during a party just to feel like himself again but pretend it's a costume was a bit silly. It's not like he can't be himself in privacy...This whole bit took me out of the story. Thankfully, the smut brought me back in, until it pushed me out again. It didn't seem to me that they really were fated mates until it was revealed they were, and even then, I found it hard to believe. I liked that the events were set in Canada, more specifically Québec, which is where I'm from and where I live. I didn't expect to read about Québec's history when I picked up these books. Now I understand how it feels to be aware of incoherences and frustrated by the mispelling of names and words, or the inaccuracies when it comes to geography or history. I also couldn't get over the fact that Roc was using canadian french/quebec slangs. I understand it may sound like a great idea from a foreigner's perspective (although I don't know where the author is from) but the use of those curses sound so unsexy to me. Roc once said: ''Ostie d'câlisse de sacrament'' which pretty much can be translated to ''Fuck, fuckity fuck of fuck'' has no real in-depth meaning. It's just a bunch of mispronounced church words, which are used like verbs, adverbs, or adjectives (just like 'fuck')...and the more curses they combo in a sentence, it means the angrier/annoyed they are, and the more they sound like drunken old sailors. See the picture? I myself don't even use those swears as I find them extremely annoying to hear. When I hear stuff like : ''Ostie de crisse de tabarnak de câlisse de sacrament'', it's an immediate turn off for me. Thankfully, Roc only said something like that once, but he kept using the ''sacrament'' slur, which we could've seriously done without. It made me cringe. ✔️HFN (view spoiler)[eh...H and h both leave Earth. The Earthian civilization being too primitive/unadvanced in science and technology, the Khargals had to wait, hiding but growing lonely with each decades, centuries. One day, Zaek, receives a signal that a beacon had been activated and he finally believes there's hope for a rescue, to return to his planet after all. Following the signal of the beacon, Zaek realizes that retrieving it might be harder than expected, as it seems to be located in a heavily guarded facility; Area 51. Nonetheless, he finds a way to get inside but when comes the time to take the beacon, he meets with a small human female who bravely stands in between. This female, Mira, is someone who's been working on that beacon for two years, to try and discover its secrets. While facing her, Zaek can't bring himself to tranquilize her as his mating glands start acting out which had never happened before. When the facility guards discover them and are ordered to shoot the alien and the assumed traitor, Mira, Zaek's first instinct is to protect her and escape with her... I really enjoyed this book. It was exactly the type of romance I've been feeling to read lately. I wasn't so much attracted to the plot itself, which dragged a little at times and had some incoherences (easily ignored) but the relationship between Zaek and Mira was gold. Zaek was such a grumpy cinnamon roll. I loved his bashfulness and protectiveness. Even by Khargal standards, he was considered to have an ugly mug, and with those centuries spent alone, he took the habit of talking to himself, arguing mentally -or not- with himself. It was almost as like he refered to two people when talking about himself and his little voice inside. He was a bit cuckoo in an endearing way. All this caused him to feel insecure when meeting his Hondassa (mate), Mira as he thought she would never accept a male like him but that he should attempt to seduce her anyway. His arguments with himself were the funniest, most endearing things I've read in a while. Also, his swollen mating glands gave him some speech impediment and it was hilarious. We love her. What? Do not be absurd. We cannot possibly love her. We met her two days ago! No no. We are sure of it. We love her. (Zaek talking to himself) “We should knock and tell her the food is ready. Then she will get out and no longer be naked.” Yes… but then she will get out and no longer be naked. He froze with his fist raised then slowly lowered it to his side. “Fuck. That is a very valid argument.” (Zaek talking to himself) As for Mira, she was a sweet and compassionate woman who grew up alone. Having nobody in her life, the job at Area 51 seemed to be perfect. Only, the facility being mostly men, she had to suffer some derisive and misplaced comments, and was sent to work on a device that was deemed at a dead end. I liked that she was brave and eager to prove her worth. Her first meeting with Zaek was interesting and a bit over the top, but very entertaining. She reminded him of one of those adorably fluffy angora bunnies, and he had the almost unbearable urge to pet her. The relationship between Zaek and Mira was perfect. I liked the pacing and most of all, even if they were fated mates, I liked that the author took the time to develop their chemistry. The build up of attraction and the passion was believable, which is why I (up)rated this book. The concept of the mating glands was original and amusing. Unlike humans, his people had different breeds within their species and those different breeds weren’t naturally compatible. To combat that problem and give them access to a wider genetic pool, they’d evolved to have a mating gland. When triggered by the scent their true mate, it produced a specialized liquid that altered the recipient’s genetics, making reproduction possible. Now for the negative, because there is some...I thought the story was dragging at times. The two main characters had to travel a lot from a destination to another, which was a bit boring if they didn't interact with each other at all. I didn't skim through but felt like doing so, which is never good. The other thing I didn't like was the ending. The action was fine, but a bit dramatic. Other than that, I thought it was a pretty solid read and would even put Zaek under my favorite-alien-hero ...more |

After a dreadful Halloween night, the people who drank a special punch started morphing into monsters and they now all live in a little town called Screaming Woods. Angie has inherited her grandmother's bookstore located in Screaming Woods. since moving there, the store hasn't been successful as the townies seem to dislike and avoid her. One day, she decides to go for a walk in the woods and she meets Alastair, a man who became a gargoyle and who owns a manor nearby. If their first encounter doesn't end up on the right footing, both grow curious and interested about each other. Alastair needing to have her within eyesight starts to mildly stalk her and Angie feeling those eyes on her decides to entice the gargoyle to come closer. Alastair was a shy cinnamon roll disguised as a grumpy male. I liked that he was inexperienced with women, having been changed into a monster before he'd grown more mature and confident. The only woman who'd shown interest in him in the past was a woman who tried to use him to boost her career, but Alastair discovered her plan before anything could happen between them. Her bad comments about his appearance gave a blow to his already low self-esteem, causing him to doubt he'd ever find someone who'd be attracted to him and love him. “I’ll see you in the morning.” The heat in his eyes—and perhaps the remnants of the blackberry cordial—gave her courage. “But I’ll leave the curtains open, in case you want to watch the way you usually do.”- As for Angie, she was a somewhat sweet and sassy young woman who knew what she wanted. I liked that she was bold, helping Alastair grow more confident and at ease with intimacy. They had a decent chemistry overall, I just think the romance wasn't as intense as it could've been. I wasn't too comfortable with the third person perspective but that's probably on me, as I've been reading a lot of first person perspective books lately. Maybe it's why the romance wasn't as passionate in my eyes. I liked the pacing as well, both characters got used to each other's presence and it wasn't an instalove/instalust situation. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: 2 months later, H proposes to h (hide spoiler)] ✔️Novella ✔️Dual POV ✔️Age gap (view spoiler)[By my assumption, H is between 30 and 40, and h is about 27-28 (hide spoiler)] ✔️Grumpy/ Virgin H ✔️Sweet/ Sassy h ✔️No OW/OM ✔️No cheating ✔️Safe ✔️Slow burn ...more |

**4/5 stars** Phew! I finally was able to find the time to finish reading this trilogy! What an original and exciting adventure it was! After the trage **4/5 stars** Phew! I finally was able to find the time to finish reading this trilogy! What an original and exciting adventure it was! After the tragedy that happened at the end of Enthralled, Ketahn escapes Takarahl and finds his way back to his now endangered mate and tribe. The Somnium isn't safe anymore, with the continuous rain pouring, sign of the flood season, but also because the Queen has sent her Fangs and Claws after the tribe to hunt them down. Then starts a rough journey through the jungle to put as much distance from Takarahl as possible. Knowing that the Queen will never stop looking for them, that they will never be at peace, confrontation is inevitable. They'll have to make a choice; run forever, or turn around and face the danger trailing them. First of all, I must say that I think it was a well written book with enough action, romance, comedy and steam to keep me entertained the whole way through. I did feel at times that the story was dragging a little bit, mostly in the middle part where nothing was really happening other than our characters journeying through the jungle. Instead of using all these pages for that, I would've preferred that the authors had used those pages to properly wrap up the story instead. Not that it was done poorly but at the end, in the epilogue, I just felt like there could've been more showing and less telling. The cut between the event of the last chapter and the epilogue was dissatisfying to me. I wanted more. I wasn't too much of a fan of Ketahn in Enthralled because of his savior complex and stubborness...but here, he was way better. He finally realized that he wasn't alone and that he had the help of his loyal friends and relayed more tasks to them. He was protective and possessive as always but he showed a lot of tenderness too. I really liked him. “I am happy. I am full of pride. I am full of love. For Ivy Foster is my mate, and no one on any world can claim such fortune.”-Ketahn Ivy was again impeccable to me, brave, clever and compassionate. Something that I always like in Sci-Fi stories like that is how humans may seem weak at first glance but that their greatest skill is to adapt quickly to a situation to ensure their survival. I like how this quality was very true for Ivy. And as she was a sort of leader in her group of humans, the others also trusted her and followed her, adapting and helping each other. “I weave my word into a bond, my nyleea. Nothing in this world shall harm you or our broodling. You are the heart that beats outside my chest.” -Ketahn I was happy to see that Ketahn and Ivy were as devoted to each other as they always been. As much as I thought there wasn't much to develop between them anymore, I really enjoyed all their moments, the tender and the steamy ones. Strangely, but not really, they reminded me of my favorite couple from Broken Earth, which is probably why I loved them so much together. ✔️HEA (view spoiler)[Epilogue: h gives birth to a hybrid baby. A go **3.5/5 stars** For a book titled Serpent's Touch, I found that there was a serious lack of touching haha. But I have to say, I LOVED the concept. A gorgonian and a human who can't look at each other and who fall in love despite that was something I'd never read about before. Amira grew up as a servant in Madame Tan's Menagerie. She quickly learned to do what is asked of her without fail and to stay out of the way when she is not needed. One day, while hiding herself, she witnesses Madame talk to a gorgonian chained in a crate, trying to make a deal with him; become her new VIP act or die from thirst. Deal that the creature refuses, sealing his fate. Amira quickly takes an interest in the gorgonian (Kyllen), disobeying Madame's order by giving her prisoner food and water. Her kindness earns her a new friend, someone to talk and listen to. And to Kyllen, Amira becomes his only hope to ever escape the menagerie. Will he be able to coax her into helping him? Amira was a sweet and kind young woman. I liked that she wasn't meek per say. Too often, this type of character ends up grating me because they have no development. It was nice to see her become braver over time, fighting her fears. Even with all the abuse from Madame, she kept going. She truly was a strong young lady. Growing up around people who didn't care about her, treated her as if she was nothing made her feel extremely lonely. Meeting Kyllen helped her real personality come out and shine, little by little. She was a bit clueless about love in general, was a bit slow and oblivious when Kyllen was flirting with her, which was cute. A likable heroine. “Why have you never told me how beautiful you are? I was a fool, fantasizing about [escaping] the crate. When I could’ve spent more time envisioning you.”-Kyllen I was a little bit scared at first that Kyllen would just manipulate and use Amira's loneliness to escape. I didn't want him to fake being her friend and to let her down. Being a fae, a bit of manipulation was to be expected, but I was glad to see that he also quickly became attached to her. He loved talking to her, he needed her and cared for her wellbeing. I believe he is the one who fell in love first while Amira is still trying to understand how she feels (mostly because of her unfamiliarity with friendship and love). I think Kyllen's desires and intentions are fairly obvious by the end of the book. I liked that he was protective and how he truly cared about Amira. I liked that he was truly touched by how much she trusted him. “I promise that no matter where I am or what I do, there will always be a place for you beside me. For as long as I live, I’ll do everything in my power for you to have a roof over your head and food on your table. And should I die before you, you’ll have the right to everything I own for the rest of your life.” As he spoke, his voice hardened, gaining a gravity that sent chills down my spine. “May I spend the rest of my days impaled on a pole in the Garden of the Cursed if I break this promise.”-Kyllen Their relationship was really interesting to me. The fact that they couldn't look at each other created a special dynamic. I didn't feel like much happened in the story because the main danger was the risk of Amira looking into Kyllen's eyes, making her turn into stone. Of course, there was the abuse from Madame but that didn't really play a big part in the plot all that much. Everything mostly revolved around Kyllen and Amira talking to each other, telling stories, etc. It felt a little bit slow at times due to that. Had there been more touching, I would've given four stars. I just felt like overall, not much was happening. In my opinion, there wasn't enough focus on the romance. Well done but I was expecting more. I felt a bit starved for romance at the end of the book, and the intimate scene didn't feel enough for how long I waited for it to happen. ✔️HFN/ Cliffhanger (view spoiler)[The story ends in a way where if you wish to only read the first book, it'd be a relatively satisfying way to end.
