I enjoyed meeting Ellis and the locals of Greenwich on the arrival of Mr Christmas.
She is an imaginative character, full of wonder.
I will admit that I didn’t entirely understand the ending though - which is odd for a children’s book, and that some of the words were a bit big for the target age group. ...more

Odd lives with his mother and her new husband, since the disappearance and presumed death of Odd’s father. His step father is rude, nasty and often cruel to Odd. So one day he decides to leave, to walk to his father’s old hut, and remain there. While there Odd meets 3 animals, a fox, a bear and an eagle – but they are not as they appear. And once they begin to talk everything changes for Odd, he soon realises he is actually speaking with the gods of Asgard – Thor, Odin and Loki.
I liked Odd as a character, he walks with a limp, he is quite sassy and takes everything in his stride. This story was entertaining and enjoyable, would recommend to anyone looking for a short book with big heart. ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed this! A quick read that I blitzed through in a couple of hours, but of course it being Gaiman it left behind chills and the fears so prominent in childhood.
Coraline Jones and her parents have moved to a new flat. One with two elderly ladies next door and a crazy old man upstairs, not to mention the black cat who seems to belong to no one.
Having explored everywhere in the surrounding land of the house, Coraline grows bored. What’s with the door that opens to a brick wall? Does it really go nowhere?
What Coraline discovers behind the door is the worst of nightmares for a child. And when this villain threatens her family Coraline must act to protect those she loves.
Creepy and imaginative, I’m glad I didn’t read this as a child! ...more

“There, as if it had that moment sprung out of the earth or dropped from the heaven - stood the figure of a solitary Woman, dressed from head to foot in white garments.”
The beginning of this book sets a great scene. Walter Hartwright is on his way to start his new job as a drawing master to two sisters in a big house in the country. On route he bumps into a woman dressed all in white - asking directions to London. She seems distressed, almost ethereal. You could be forgiven for thinking she was even a ghost.
It’s a great start and I was gripped to find out more about the woman. However we soon realise that the woman in white herself is only a small part of the overall story. She only shows up a few brief times.
Meanwhile Laura and Marian start their drawing lessons. Before long Walter and Laura have fallen in love - but Laura is already betrothed to Sir Percival Glyde, an ass of a man.
Speaking of assess. Sir Percival’s dear friend Count Fosco is also an ass. As the story went on I found myself growing frustrated with all the back and forth. I feel like all the questions could have been solved a lot quicker. I know this book was written in the 1800s so naturally it would be on the long side. But as a 21st century reader I was getting fed up after about 400 pages.
Overall, I did enjoy all the secrets and how they came about. I just wish it was shorter and that the reveals were quicker. ...more
