Susie Sloth and Her Secret SuperAs a parent of children ranging from 3 to 9 years old, finding a book that captivates all of them can be a challenge. Susie Sloth and Her Secret Superpower by Charlotte Marsh did exactly that—and more! From the moment we opened the book, my little ones were completely engaged. As an adult, it was heartwarming to see such joy on my children's faces reading this.
One of the biggest highlights for them was spotting the hidden ladybirds throughout the pages. It became an exciting game, with lots of eager pointing, giggling and shouts of “I found one!” This interactive element kept them hooked, making the story even more enjoyable. Alongside the vibrant illustrations, the playful humor had them giggling constantly—especially during Susie’s adorable adventures.
Beyond the fun, I loved how the book subtly introduces movement, mindfulness, and breathwork in a way that feels natural and engaging for kids. It’s not just a story; it’s an experience that encourages little ones to move, stretch, and explore how their bodies work. It was wonderful to see my children not only enjoying the story but also trying out some of Susie’s “superpowers” themselves, having a competition of who is the better superhero with their powers.
Overall, Susie Sloth and Her Secret Superpower is a beautifully written and illustrated book that combines fun, learning, and movement in the best possible way. It’s now a favorite in our household, and I highly recommend it to any parent looking for a joyful, interactive, and meaningful read....more
Marilyn Peake's They Left Magic in Their Wake is an utterly addictive blend of fantasy and science fiction, set in a post-apocalyptic world that feelsMarilyn Peake's They Left Magic in Their Wake is an utterly addictive blend of fantasy and science fiction, set in a post-apocalyptic world that feels both eerily familiar and breathtakingly original. From the first page, Peake captivates the reader with a richly imagined setting where remnants of our present-day society have become myth and legend, shaping the beliefs and survival of future generations.
One of the most thought-provoking aspects of the novel is how the characters perceive what we consider modern technology—neon signs, computers, and airplanes as relics of an ancient time. It was strange yet fascinating to read about their awe and misunderstanding of these artifacts, and it made me wonder if one day, people will look back at our present world with the same sense of longing and nostalgia, wishing to be part of a past that has been lost to time.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the novel is its unique narrative structure. While most of the story unfolds through a third-person perspective, allowing for a broad and immersive view of this transformed world, one tribal element is written in the first person. This creative decision adds depth and immediacy, providing an intimate look at one group's experiences in a way that feels fresh and engaging. It’s a technique I haven’t seen before in a novel, and it worked brilliantly, enhancing the emotional pull of the story.
The world-building is exceptional, immersing the reader in each tribe’s way of life and the struggles they face. Peake crafts a setting that is both fantastical and scientifically plausible, blending elements of magic with remnants of lost technology. As the characters navigate this landscape, encountering phenomena that seem supernatural yet hold the echoes of forgotten science, the novel raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of progress, knowledge, and belief. The contrast between what the characters perceive as mystical and what we, as readers, recognize as the remnants of our present world, adds an extra layer of depth and wonder to the reading experience.
Beyond its immersive world, the novel also delivers on emotional depth. The characters are compelling, each with their own struggles, hopes, and determination to carve out a life in this strange new reality. Their journeys—filled with discovery, danger, and moments of profound revelation—kept me turning the pages late into the night. The relationships between them and their interactions bring warmth and humanity to a world that could otherwise feel bleak. Zadie and Nora stood out as my favorite characters; their strength and willpower were incredible, making their storylines particularly moving and inspiring. Their perseverance in the face of overwhelming challenges was nothing short of remarkable, and I found myself deeply invested in their fates.
It’s important to note that the novel contains themes of child and infant death, which may be triggering for some readers. These moments are deeply emotional and handled with sensitivity, adding to the novel’s overall poignancy and weight.
As I reached the final pages, I found myself yearning for more. The ending is thought-provoking. I really want a part two to this book (I'm hoping there is) because the ending left so many unanswered questions and I felt like it could have been extended a little longer. There are many elements of the world that beg to be explored further.
Overall, They Left Magic in Their Wake is a fascinating, beautifully written novel that defies genre conventions and delivers a gripping, imaginative tale. It’s a must-read for fans of both fantasy and science fiction, especially those who love unique storytelling techniques, and narratives that linger in the mind long after the final page. ...more

The first book in the telepath series I read a few years ago, I was addicted. I knew deep down the second would be the same, if not better. Of course, I was right. Mindbender is an electrifying and thought provoking sequel that not only lives up to the brilliance of the first book but takes the story to thrilling new heights. It's an absolute must-read for fans of sci-fi and urban fantasy. This novel had such a gripping plot, compelling character development and an ever-present sense of suspense. One of the novel's standout elements to me is how intricately Bowman explains telepathic and mind-bending abilities, as well as other techniques. The class professors breaking down both the basics and the more advanced is written that well it feels as though you're learning alongside the characters. It's that immersive I genuinely started to think I could tap into someone's thoughts myself. Unlike some books that slightly skim over or gloss slightly over supernatural abilities. Mindbender makes them feel real, logical and almost attainable, which adds to the books believability and depth.
"Our choices are what matter. Choosing not to do something is every bit as much of a choice as to do something. We could be healing people whose injuries are beyond current medical science, but instead we let them die. Pretending that inaction absolves us of the consequences is cowardly. And that is what we Telepaths have collectively been for centuries. Cowards."
As always, I find Gordon's true strength lies in his characters. Because, what is a book without characters? Every individual in this story is unpredictable, making for an emotional rollercoaster. One moment, you find yourself rooting for them, believing in their motives and their struggles, to despising them the next when their choice took an unexpected turn. Every single interaction in this novel makes everything high-stakes. Nothing and nobody can be trusted completely. It keeps you guessing at all times, and pretty much impossible to put down. That sense of unease is another reason Mindbender is such a gripping read. I questioned the reality right alongside the characters. Of course, since memories and thoughts can be manipulated, you never know who has been affected or who is truly in control of their own mind (huge twist in the story, which means I cannot delve into this much more as it would be spoiler central). The lingering doubt weaves a tense atmosphere throughout the entire book. Bowman manages to masterfully explore the moral implications of mind-bending. The ability to change someone's core beliefs and memories presenting ethical dilemmas that the characters must confront. Should telepaths use their abilities to change the minds of dangerous individuals for the greater good, and where is the line between helping and controlling them? This pushes the book beyond a standard sci-fi urban fantasy, it's one that lingers in your mind LONG after you've turned the last page. Overall, Mindbender is an exceptional sequel that expands upon the foundation set by Telepath in every way. It's intricate exploration of telepathic abilities, morally complex characters and a terrifying mixture of both good and evil. This book is unforgettable. Whether you're new to the series or have been eagerly awaiting this instalment. You will not regret buying this, in anyway shape or form. Roll on Book 3!

This novel follows three main characters—Kate, Matt, and Paige—who become entangled in a deeply complex and emotionally charged web of relationships. At its core, the book explores love, personal growth, heartbreak, and the sometimes messy, unpredictable nature of human connections.
I actually really enjoyed this book, it was refreshing and not at all predictable like some other novels in this genre, this one felt raw and real, refusing to follow a conventional path. It was one of those books where you don't just read the story--you experience it along side the characters. Each one of them felt well-developed and written well that I found myself completely invested in their journeys. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the story took a turn I didn't see coming. The ending, in particular, left me completely shocked in the best way possible.
The choice of the narration suited the novel well, it was written in first person, which we know how it created an immersive experience and helps to see events unfold through the character's perspective. The multiple POV's added an extra layer of depth, allowing us to understand their motivations and personal struggles. This narrative helped it feel more authentic. A review on Waterstones also praised the book for its compelling exploration of relationships and self-discovery. Kate, in particular was highlighted as relatable and she embarks on a journey of self-exploration following a painful breakup. The dynamics of all three characters captured both the beauty and the true chaos of love, attraction, and emotional entanglement. The inclusion of same-sex relationships, I adored. It was fun to see a different side of how the characters truly felt about each other. Scott's writing style is something to admire. He managed to write an engaging, crisp and emotionally charged novel without ever feeling overdone or info dumped. He made even the smallest interactions feel meaningful, adding to the realism aspect. Overall, 'You, Your Girlfriend & Me' is an outstanding debut that delivers a refreshing and thought-provoking take on modern love and relationships. It'll stay in your brain with the unpredictability of human emotions. This one is definitely worth reading. I'd have loved some sort of epilogue or a second book to follow on from this, so hopefully the author would take this to ensure there is another book after this for the readers....more
First of all, a huge thank you to Nick Snape for gifting me this book in exchange for an honest review. I actually didn't know where to put this book iFirst of all, a huge thank you to Nick Snape for gifting me this book in exchange for an honest review. I actually didn't know where to put this book in terms of my genre headers, only because there is such an eclectic mix, bits of sci-fi, fantasy and even elements of spirits. But surprisingly, it all works out seamlessly. From the very start, the book provides an immersive experience, featuring a fantastic well laid out map of Brandshold before the prologue featuring: The Handren Mountains, Partera Plains, Southern Reaches, Khund, Isle of Tees and the Isle of Meres. For a fantasy, this is an instant win with a well done map setting the stage for an epic journey.
I always find writing in third person is a lot harder than first, but Nick writing with this narrative enhanced the depth of the world and the characters, it provided insight into their thoughts and emotions rather than being limited to just one person's experience. The prologue can be a bit difficult to understand, it throws the reader straight into the world which could be challenging for those new to fantasy. However, once past that initial complexity, the book takes off and becomes an absolute gripping read. The novel starts with a mission gone wrong, instantly making the reader empathise with the protagonist. However, his journey is anything but predictable , grief stricken and lost, he turns to alcohol but is forced to continue his role as a ranger. His internal struggles along with his complicated feelings for the elven, Sura added layers to his character, making him both relatable and frustrating in the best way possible. The personal turmoil for Laoch is overshadowed by a greater threat, as humanity is plunged into a sinister nightmare which from a simple mission transporting dangerous weapons is interrupted by otherworldly forces. This 'Soul Tear' changes everything, with this ANOTHER threat emerged, the constructors. Jeeeesh. This was incredible, the whole book was crafted perfectly to incorporate all of these twists and turns.
The only hope for this survival lies in God's weapons. But the seven, the legendary figures who once wielded them, are no longer around. Now, again, a select few hold the fate of the world in their hands. The multiple POV worked well in this novel, the narrative shifted between locations and perspectives providing different versions of the ongoing story. I found the world-building, detailed but never overwhelming and definitely no excessive info-dumping. Instead, the history unfolded naturally. "I need certainty. Understand? We're done, Laoch. I can't take anymore of your crap. I can't trust you." I'm not sure if anyone else has commented on this character, but I really liked Gowen, I can't say too much in this as it will spoil it, but certain actions change your mind about her by the end of the novel. The action sequences were also phenomenal, once they started, they didn't let up, I stayed open mouthed for a few pages until I turned again. The short chapters also worked amazingly well, added to the pacing quickly flipping between different scenarios keeping me engaged the entire time. The characters were deeply developed, some of them I'm hoping that will be more in depth in the next books. but their relationships with each other and their flaws made them feel incredibly real. The balance between science and religion within the story's themes added another layer of intrigue, and the interplay between Gods and the university, where knowledge and faith collide. It is very cleverly written and I feel as though a LOT of work would have been put into this to portray the themes and the twists. By the end, the book sets up the next installment perfectly, leaving just enough unanswered questions to build anticipation without feeling incomplete. While the beginning might be a bit complex for readers unfamiliar with fantasy, stick with it, because you'd be so thankful for the journey you are taken on.
I'm so glad I experienced this novel, it's a strong start to what promises to be an epic series, and I can't wait to continue the journey! ...more

Chrissie Harrison’s book lightenYou know what? I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I never put it down, I think it took me less than 48 hours to complete.
Chrissie Harrison’s book lightened my spirit's entirely. It's one of those books that if you are feeling a little down or you just need some breathing space and something to make you laugh. It'd definitely be this novel. I actually adored how every inch of this book made me smile. It's uplifting and hilarious. Chrissie managed to blend humour and emotional depth together, a story which shows how personal fears, deep grief and love can all co-exist in one book of a journey in healing and self acceptance. While the comedy side of things keep the book light and engaging. The author doesn't shy away from incorporating heavier themes, making this an immersive read. There was a very unique plot which I found quite interesting and pulled me to this novel in the first place. The protagonist grapples with a phobia of lifts, which served as both a source of comedy and also a deep personal struggle. Rather than treating it as a mere quirk, it also covers the exposure therapy for Drew because he was forced to go inside, which...no spoilers, ends up being the best thing that happened to him. The fear is explored really well making it an integral part of the characters development. The way Harrison weaved this into this story ensures the readers not only laugh at the misadventures but also empathise with their anxieties. Another great bit of the novel was the chapter names. E.g. (Floor 1, Floor 2, Floor 3). I knew it was going to be a great read from the opening sentence. "Drew arrived at his office without killing anyone." The banter between even the secondary characters was brilliant, they could have all had a spin-off novel of their own.
Floored doesn't hesitate to address weightier themes such as grief and the loss of a spouse. The author approaches these topics with sensitivity and the natural growth in coping with these feelings, additionally allowing the emotional weight of the characters experiences to resonate. When I look for books to review I always look for characters that are realistic and deeply relatable. This book gives you exactly that, both Hannah and Drew both feel authentic with their flaws and struggles making them all the more human. Even in moments of tension or sadness, the book never loses its sense of hope and playfulness. Amy, (Hannah's best friend) was one of my favourites, their friendship felt real and it was wholesome. For readers who love romantic comedies with substance, Floored is a must-read. It proves that a book can be both hilariously entertaining and deeply moving, without one aspect overshadowing the other. My final verdict is, that it's a charming, heartfelt, and a laugh out loud rom-com. Chrissie Harrison has crafted a story that is a relatable as it is delightful, making Floored a standout in the genre....more

Sea State by J.M Simpson captivated me entirely, and I have no hesitation in declaring it an exceptional read. This novel was the first in the Castleby series, it introduces us first hand to the rugged coastal town. The author has crafted a novel that seamlessly blends romance, suspense and themes of personal resilience, all against the unique backdrop of an RNLI lifeboat crew. Jesse stevens, is a woman seeking refuge from a past riddled with trauma, she arrives in Castleby hoping to start a new life, but her healing isn't exactly straightforward. Parallel to her story is also Doug Brodie, the dedicated skipper of the local RNLI crew, who is grappling with his own personal losses and disintegration of his marriage. Two realistic and incredibly relatable themes. They are both layered, and completely believable characters who struggles feel authentic. Both of them throughout the novel attempt to confront their own demons whilst forming a connection that is both touching and compelling. One of the authors greatest strengths in this novel from the get go, is the atmospheric and absolutely vivid world-building. The way she describes Castleby and it's surrounding landscapes is breathtaking. Whether the author has firsthand experience of such a place, or has conducted very extensive research is still unclear to me, but what is clear, is the ability to bring the whole setting to life, which for me, as a writer, I find it difficult. By the end of the book. I could see Castleby in all its beauty, the stormy seas, the tight knit community and the lifeboat crew. The RNLI portrayal I found the most interesting, just because I've never read a novel this unique. It was nice to read a novel, with a different sort of emergency response sector, showcasing, although fiction, the sheer skill and bravery. The authors depiction of these missions are both realistic, and thrilling, with just the right balance of emotional intensity. Sea State's pacing was amazing. The novel never felt rushed, or dragged. It flows naturally, and the balance between slow-burning character development and suspense is handled incredibly. Every moment in the novel doesn't feel wasted, and feels meaningful. The author does not shy away from difficult themes, she weaved in elements of domestic abuse, stalking, trauma, but dealt with them with such sensitivity and care. Every side character contributed to the narrative in meaningful ways rather than being placed in the story like a filler. If I had to sum up my reading experience, it would be this: This is the kind of novel that will always stay with you after the final page, one that will IMMEDIATLEY make you buy the next one. I have already passed this book onto my mother, as she said it sounded brilliant after how much I spoke about it. I also cannot help but feel that Sea State would translate amazingly to the screen. I really hope the author considers submitting it for consideration, as it would be an incredible TV adaptation. For those who love stories that blend with suspense, yet emotional storytelling. This is a must read. It's an outstanding book for what I can only imagine will be an incredible series. A full five star read for me, compelling and addictive. ...more

'Fantasy' novels are usually known for their grand settings, their world-building, magical battles with dungeons and dragons, but every so often a book comes along that is entirely unique. Joel Glover's book intricately weaves the seemingly mundane profession of accounting into a fantasy world, and this was a refreshingly different experience for me.
The protagonist, Gene quickly became one of my favourite characters, unlike in traditional fantasy books, usual 'heroes' wield swords or harness magical abilities, but Gene, well...his greatest weapon is his intelligence. His talents lie in seeing patterns in numbers- in a world where uncovering hidden truths mean the difference between war and peace. His analytical behaviour sets him apart, making him a character to root for as he works out a plan an attempt to prevent impending disaster, via a memo from the Department Of War.
Another standout character for me is Kostya, whose constant stream of foul language and blunt remarks made him a joy to read, wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but for those who read my blogs, or follow me on social media probably know why I enjoyed him so much. His crude humour and unfiltered speech brings a comedic realism to the dialogue. My favourite sarcastic remark was this one:
"Oh, you thought, did you? Well fuck me, that's a nice change of scenery alright. Doing your own thinking again, are you? After the time where it turned out that doing your own thinking was, in fact, a recipe for a total fucking disaster?"
His language was not only entertaining, but revealing of a great personality, a counterbalance to Gene's more methodical nature adds depth to their dynamic. Many others can struggle to create names, cities, government structures that feel original and immersive. Joel managed to create a setting that is also rich with political intrigue. The idea that entire cities believe they are the next 'prince' fuels much of the book's conflict, and drives tension between powerful and even ordinary citizens. The only critique I have about this novel, is the lack of setting/imagery. I would of liked more of a feel of the physical description of the areas. However, the notion of competing egos and self-importance creates another great backdrop for the story.
One of the most striking aspects of this novel is it's reversal of traditional gender dynamics. In this world, men are perceived as the weaker sex- a narrative choice that can upend some conventional fantasy trope. I liked this perspective, it added an extra layer of intrigue. This theme is woven seamlessly into the story, rather than feeling forced or gimmicky, which speaks to Joel's skill as a writer. His writing style was another major highlight for me. Told in first person, lacing with sarcastic monologue that never feels forced, it flows naturally, making it fun to read. It's the kind of dry wit that doesn't try too hard and lands perfectly without even realising it. It's evident a great deal of research/planning went into crafting the story. Beyond the humour and action, there are deeper themes at play, whether that is through political power, societal expectations or the nature of intelligence, makes this novel into something thought-provoking.
I actually spoke to Joel after I read this book, due to the fact the ending of it got me a tad emotion. But let's not get into any spoilers shall we? It's the first true fleshed out novel that I have read of Joels. I have always been a fan of his children's books, as all my children adore them and we have recently brought his latest one.
Overall this book stands out as a different fantasy for all the right reasons. If you're looking for something different and a unique take on fantasy storytelling, give Joel a chance. His writing has crafted something special here, and I can't wait to read more from him in the future....more

While steamy scenes are a major draw, it is the compelling storyline that keeps readers invested long after the heat of the moment fades. Striking the perfect balance between eroticism and narrative depth is essential to creating a romance suspense novel that resonates.
This is the fourth instalment of 'The Book Club Series'. If you take a look at any of my social media posts you will see how in love I am with these books. It can be read as a standalone, however I would HIGHLY recommend reading the other three first, as this is where you get to know each of the characters, their backgrounds and stories to what led them to where they are in Jess's story. If I'm actually being totally honest here, I'd say I'm obsessed. That's an understatement.
The narrative centres on Jessica, who has been conditioned throughout her life to believe in primary rules that she only has to 'look pretty, marry and produce an heir'. Faced with an arranged marriage orchestrated by her father, Jess seeks an escape. Can you imagine how exciting this book is just by reading that one sentence?
Not only is the spice levels in these books a raging chilli pepper of five, all the steam you need, the taboos and kinks. The plot is engaging, and has extremely compelling characters as always. There is an average rating of 4.87 out of 5 on GoodReads. Ali always manages to write so passionately with action, memorable characters and their romantic journeys, not only this but she portrays really important themes throughout each of her novels. Jess's story delves into themes of self-worth, societal expectations, complexities of real, meaningful love offering readers that captivating and emotionally resonant experience we all crave.
In our street team group chat, we have our 'favourite men'. When you read each of the books you think RIGHT, this is the one, you fall in love with the fictional idea of the men, but come with such positive values, not like the ones in the smut books that clearly are morally grey evil men, that everyone somehow falls in love with.
It's addictive. I can't say too much without spoilers, and we hate spoilers right?
But if you haven't read these yet, please do. You will never be able to put them down.
Ali always has offers on, and she deserves so much praise for the amount of hard work, marketing and genuine love for her writing, which as all of us who have read these will appreciate.
One warning though...
You will feel lost without these books, once you've finished it, you'll be wanting more. The characters feel like your friends and in the end, you won't stop thinking about them! There are trigger warnings and also playlists in every single novel, which is fantastic. I love listening to the music as I'm reading along....more
New Rock, New Role is possibly one of the best novels I’ve ever read. Richard Sparks has crafted a masterpiece that words can scarcely do justice to. New Rock, New Role is possibly one of the best novels I’ve ever read. Richard Sparks has crafted a masterpiece that words can scarcely do justice to. The book drew me in so deeply, I felt as though I was living within its pages. The world-building wasn’t just about setting the scene or painting vivid imagery; it was a fully immersive experience. The world itself became integral to the characters’ lives and the overarching themes of the story.
When world-building is done with such care, readers can imagine the landscapes, hear the sounds, and feel the atmosphere. In this novel, I lost myself in the story, forgetting reality and consuming every word as though I were part of the adventure myself. The world wasn’t merely a backdrop—it shaped how the characters adapted and evolved. When world-building is this well done, it elevates the entire reading experience.
Richard Sparks clearly put great thought into this aspect of his story, and it’s one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much. I couldn’t put the book down. Reality seemed distant as I became fully engrossed in the pages. The characters felt like old friends, and experiencing their trials, tribulations, quests, and emotional rollercoasters made the story feel like my own journey. The entire experience was an epic blend of excitement, emotion, and adventure. The novel begins with Joss, a retired teacher who finds solace in online gaming, his only real connection to the world. With no close friends or family, he forges deep bonds with players he has never met in person but has adventured alongside for years. Among them are an Australian Orc and Qrysta, a skilled dual-wielding sword dancer. In the game, Joss is Daxx—a powerful battlemage, meticulously crafted and mastered through countless hours of play.
Their journey kicks off at the World Championship, where their teamwork and skill secure an inevitable victory. But just when they think it’s another win in the books, everything changes. Instead of logging out, they find themselves transported into a real, unfamiliar world—stripped of their hard-earned power and starting from scratch. Now, just like in the game, they must fight to survive, level up, and reclaim their strength. But this time, the stakes are real.
Each character was thoughtfully crafted to showcase their growth and evolution throughout the story. Their distinct personalities shone through, making them feel authentic and dynamic. Even the side characters were given unique traits and quirks, ensuring that no two felt the same. The book was brimming with humor and wit, which resonated with me perfectly—I often found myself laughing out loud at the clever dialogue and amusing interactions. I'm not sure how long Richard actually spent planning this novel, but each twist and turn seemed miraculously crafted to leave me speechless after finishing. Whilst some readers would think this novel is a slow burn, I felt as though it was entirely necessary to fully immerse yourself into an unfolding world.
I didn't just read this book, I also took the time to experience the audio version too. Narrated by the author himself. His narration added a personal touch, bringing the characters to life. I highly recommend giving the audiobook a go as well as reading the book, to gain the full immersive experience this novel offers. As for the ending? DID NOT see that coming. No spoilers here at all, but let's just say it left me incredibly excited for the next instalment, which is actually out now. If you love ready player one, gaming and epic fantasy this book is an absolute must read. I knew from the minute I saw it on Twitter/Instagram that it would be good, especially the cover, it drew me in straight away. We all know how important a cover is right? How gorgeous!
If I'm being completely transparent here, I had to take a triple look into the fact that this book was actually a debut? I refuse to believe a book THIS good would be an author's first, but here I am, mistaken...and incredibly impressed. If you are new to the fantasy genre I think as a complete beginner some may feel overwhelmed at the world-building, some of the names and various aspects of a fantasy in general can be hard to grasp and some, may avoid it completely. But this author managed to make this complex book, with phenomenal world-building flow perfectly even for the readers that have never dabbled into the fantasy fiction world. My impression from this novel is that the author must have planned each and every little detail for at least ten years to produce something like this, maybe mind maps of each character, strict planning? I guess I won't find out till I interview him, but I am seriously wondering how a normal person could pull of something so magical.
Character development is a huge thing to me, in reality, a story isn't a story without people. Alexander incorporated each individual perfectly, without the need of excess filler characters to spread the book out a little bit. Throughout the whole text, we learnt each one's back stories, their goals, their flaws, their growth as a person and their deepest desires, and by the end of the book I was actually really sad to let them go, they were that realistic that they felt like my friends... I'm so glad the author is making a sequel because I would be the first to snatch it up. We have Zercien, a normal day-to-day schoolteacher, thrown into a huge adventure and a mystery that seems otherworldly to others, once a nerd and then possessed by an ancient ghost which makes him overall kickass. You can see him fight for his own mental state, at which times are funny, but other times you are screaming at the page for a certain thing to happen. (Again no spoilers) His partner Saena, their life together and all of their friends including Euvard (he was a lovable character) and Lloyd, my absolute favourite, at no point was he a protagonist but he was such an important part of the story, and the most mysterious. I'd love to see what happens to him in the next book.
We have armies, we have ghostly beings, helldregs, dragons, the boil-faced-man (I loved it when he came on the scene, he was so creepy it was almost addictive) and so much more that if I typed it I would spoil the whole thing. So let's stop there?
Have you ever read a book where the MC was possessed by an ancient warrior? Seriously, if you have let me know because I certainly haven't. The plot was very unique and reminded me of each fairytale or childhood adventure you dreamt of as a child but a little darker and a bit more addictive.
Zercien bent down and placed his hand on the back of her head, bringing her lips to his, and they kissed like they'd never meet again.
The novel made me gasp, cry, throw the book in anger. Every single emotion was let out while reading, and if that doesn't happen surely something isn't right? I couldn't put it down. I'm a terrible reader sometimes because I like to think I'd know what would happen next, and at times in this book I was SO SURE of it, and turned the page and another twist smashed me right in the face and sat me back down to shut up. The novel started off as a slow burn, but it was important for the story to be able to portray the way it did, and I'm so glad for it because once everything came into one you were lead on an experience you would never forget.
Overall, this was a great book and a thrilling read.
Check out the blurb, because this is a fantasy book you do not want to miss out on....more

This is the second book I've read from Thank you to the wonderful @rachel_l_tilley who gifted me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book I've read from this author, a standalone which didn't disappoint. A lovely dystopian fantasy.
We follow Adria, who was an orphan who was placed within Ember House whose job it was to provide trips up to the mountain with food, clothes, and various necessities to the unknown locked inside. Until she releases him... was this a smart move? Time will tell.
I loved the poetic prose of this book, the POVs, and the internal thoughts from Varick himself. The theme of greed and power were obvious in the narrative, and what I thought would be an enemies to lovers trope...or was it?
We follow her fight and willpower to make the world a better place, decisions that had to come from strength and power that she did not hold. Within her new role, she finds herself thrown into the world of magic, a heavy responsibility she finds herself in. This was a very different YA fantasy book, with a unique storyline and not the usual tropes you'd see in a typical one.
I enjoyed the twists and the turns and the journey they both undertook to get to the bottom of all the unknown questions bubbling within the reader.
