I learned a lot about queer history that I hadn't previously known and the selection of individuals was really varied and inclusive (i.e., not all white). I think the only person I felt was a little out of place was Joan of Arc (I just don't think the argument that because she wore men's clothing she may have been queer is very strong). I had a few issues with the style of writing, which is why it's not quite 5 stars for me. I know this book is aimed at teenagers, but I think that some of the phrasing and tone of voice could have been a little more mature. Teens aren't stupid (it was mainly the author writing things like "*ahem*" when talking about sex, etc. It just wasn't necessary)....more

ME is a hilarious and heartfelt autobiographical account of Elton John's life, wonderfully narrated by Taron Egerton. It's hard to review something that is somebody's discussion of their life, so its not the content of this that actually matters. Having watched Rocketman, it wasn't difficult to picture many of the events earlier on.
Elton John tells his story fantastically, starting with his childhood, to the beginning of his music career. The drinking, the drugs, the sex. Hitting rock bottom. Rehab, meeting his husband and having his children. This isn't a spoiler because its his life. But I did learn a lot of things about him I hadn't known previously, especially as a younger fan of his (I wasn't even alive when he did the Lion King). The way he has written the events of his life is brilliant, some even hilariously so that you can hear Egerton laughing as he reads what happens. The audiobook is really what makes this so fantastic to me, as Egeton does accents and voices for each 'character' in Elton John's life. The book is brilliantly sandwiched with a prologue and epilogue read by the man himself.
Whether you're an Elton John fan or not, I think anyone would enjoy reading about his amazing, and sometimes quite tragic, life....more

I enjoyed this book. It had a lot of interesting points, and a lot of points I disagreed with. It will be a great resource for my research project. I've written something of a full review for my literature review but it's currently a very messy draft that I don't want to look at....more

This was okay. An agony aunt style of answering questions and giving "advice," but in Bianca del Rio's snarky, crass way. I don't think her humour translates well to the written word and I probably would have enjoyed this more if I had listened to the audiobook. However, some questions and answers did make me laugh out loud, and the pictures are nice, so it was a good, quick and easy read!

I knew most of the stuff Hannah was talking about because I'm a pretty sex positive person myself but I still managed to learn something (who knew there were so many forms of contraception!?) I do wish there had been more anecdotes as well, but that's probably because I'm an incredibly nosey person. Overall a really good book for learning about all things sex and relationships!...more

I first discovered Day upon seeing her in Supernatural, where she plays a character who is very similar to her real-life personality. Although short, You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) tells a wonderful tale of how Day came to be the "Queen of the Geeks." This book had me laughing one minute, and crying the next. It also left me feeling very optimistic about my future (Felicia spent a good part of her life playing video games and still manage to develop a successful career? Then I'm all set!) YNWOTI(A) (great abbreviation, huh?) talks about Day's experiences with being homeschooled, the birth of the Internet, the creation of her web-show, the Guild, and her company, Geek and Sundry. It also talks about her struggles with anxiety and depression. My reviews are always messy and all over the place, and in a way, so was this book. Day's stories felt like I was having a conversation with an old friend. I laughed with her at her misfortunes, and cheered when something good came along. I cried when she talked about her experience suicide ideation. I was also pissed off with the gaming community during Chapter 11. I loved this book. And I'm probably going to be quoting it for the rest of my life. Felicia Day made me proud to be weird. I'm not going to hold myself back anymore. I shall leave you with a quote, one that I will probably be turning back to over the next year of my life. (view spoiler)["Don't chase perfection for perfection's sake, or for anyone else's sake at all. If you strive for something, make sure it's for the right reasons. And if you fail, that will be a better lesson for you than any success you'll ever have. Because you learn a lot from screwing up." (hide spoiler)]...more
