The plausible and very real terror outlined in the pages will leave you with a chill up your spine and creating your emergency response kit as a result. Forstchen's work of fiction is a snap of the fingers away from being a reality. I found the seemingly never ending list of ramifications of the EMP event staggering. We really don't know just how dependent we have become until you start thinking of the thousands of ripples that could so easily be cast into our pond.
Fair warning that this book, while fascinating, is also terrifying and not for the faint of heart. Anyone who brags about how "fun" it would be to live in an apocalyptic aftermath with no society, no readily available food, water, or medicine, and no laws or morals, is IMHO an ignorant schmuck that doesn't appreciate just how good we have it. The savagery of horror of what we are just a few weeks removed from at any given moment is something that I would not wish for anyone.
Hats off to Forstchen for delivering an eye opener filled with raw emotional power. One chapter was one of the most gut wrenching I have ever read, and left me hugging my daughters extra tight afterward. Give it a read and pay attention to what the man has to say. I look forward to seeing where the series goes from here. ...more
