The four separate plays were all short, around a hundred pages, but well paced and easy to follow, as most of it is dialogue. Maybe I had a good translation, but I thought it would be way more confusing. I was also surprised at all the sex positivity and women advocating for their own narratives, it’s just kinda crazy like damn they were debating about gender norms and debt back in 400 BCE, are we ever going to escape these human made problems? Probably not...more

Overall, this wRead this puffin classics edition of the odyssey, per Devin’s suggestion, to prepare myself for eventually reading Homer’s real works. Overall, this was a fun, easy read, I was surprised at how many greek myths I remembered from my Percy Jackson youth days. Like I remember in Percy Jackson the cyclops and the story of how Odysseus blinded the cyclops, posiden cursing Odysseus, sea nymphs, the sirens, riding underneath the sheep, men turning into pigs, I remember reading all about these myths in Percy Jackson. Gotta hand it to Rick rioridan, he made a generation of children super invested in Greek mythology by making them accessible; too bad he’s a Zionist though :/...more

The ending fell somewhat flat for me, and a lot of the side characters felt underdeveloped, or like we didn’t get much nuance from them; but I think I just appreciated native son a bit more. Obviously, I’m not black, but I did appreciate how deep this book dug into our main character and his identity, especially in regard to race, maturing, and finding himself in the brotherhood. However, this was still a great and very important classic about race in the US, a novel that paved that way for black literature. Crazy to think MLK hadn’t even happened when Invisible man came out....more

While I appreciated DeLillo’s attempt to write a 9/11 novel and do some kind of Faulker esc non specified pronouns, jumping around in perspectives, times, settings, mid sentence or paragraph, but it just didn’t land, for me, the way he intended. Fell flat, to the point where I didn’t care about these characters. The only characters I was semi intrigued with were the suicide bombers, but DeLillo provided barely any moments to delve into their psych. Also, feel like it really isn’t DeLillo, a white dude, job to tell the story of the plane drivers. ...more

Not any fault of the authors writing, the premise of this novella is that it’s a short story, just the nearly three hour long film really forces the viewer to endure and wallow in the hurt alongside ennis and Jack. On top of that, I really enjoyed all beautiful cinematography captured in the movie with the scenic mountain ranges where the film was shot. Overall though, gotta give credit to the original, this was a great quick read, that can be finished in under an hour. Very fun pride book that encapsulates the tragic gay experience, but would highly recommend, it’s a free pdf on the webernet...more
