Johnson’s "Fog City" is a murder mystery with an extraordinary female protagonist, Maggie, that fully deserves a five-star rating. Set in the captivating backdrop of 1930s San Francisco and deep in the Prohibition era, the novel drew me in from the very first page and held my attention throughout. Johnson's vivid descriptions effortlessly transported me to the misty and fog-filled streets and the underground speakeasies of the city, making me feel like I was a part of the story.
The characters in "Fog City" are beautifully fleshed out and incredibly relatable, each with their own intriguing backstory and personal growth throughout the narrative. Their complex relationships and interactions kept me engrossed, and I found myself emotionally invested in Maggie’s journey from wanting to be more than just a secretary of a detective agency. She wants to run the agency as a detective.
Johnson's storytelling prowess is evident in the seamless blend of mystery, romance, and suspense, which kept me eagerly turning the pages, desperate to unravel the mysteries hidden within the fog. Moreover, the pacing of the book is impeccable, never leaving a dull moment, and the plot twists are expertly executed, keeping me on the edge of my seat until the very end. “The Rhino Keeper” by Jillian Forsberg is a deeply moving and masterfully written historical fiction that captures the essence of courage, compassion,“The Rhino Keeper” by Jillian Forsberg is a deeply moving and masterfully written historical fiction that captures the essence of courage, compassion, and the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. From the very first page, Forsberg immerses the reader in the world of adventure, love, and companionship across the globe with visits to kingdoms and palaces near and far, weaving a past and present narrative that is both gripping, heartfelt, and full of intrigue.
The story centers on sea Captain Douwemout van de Meer (Douwe), who becomes the lovingly bonded guardian of an orphaned rhinoceros calf, named Clara. Known for transporting livestock cargo across the seas, he was offered a proposition to transport this Behemoth calf orphaned when her mother was killed for her magical horn. As Douwe falls in love with the animal, he sees that he can educate the world that she is more than just a “magical horn” to poach.
Forsberg’s vivid descriptions of the Indian rhinoceros and their adventures across land and sea are breathtaking, painting a picture of its raw beauty and the dangers that lurk within. The author’s ability to bring the animal world (and history) to life is nothing short of extraordinary, making the reader feel as though they are walking alongside Douwe and his beloved rhino.
What truly sets “The Rhino Keeper” apart is its emotional depth. The bond between Douwe, Zubin, and the rhino is portrayed with such tenderness and authenticity that it’s impossible not to be moved.
The characters in this novel are richly developed, multidimensional, and complex, with Douwe standing out as a strong, empathetic protagonist from the historical side and Andrea from the present side. Andrea’s journey of self-discovery, her unwavering commitment to her values, and her love of history and animals make her a character that readers will root for until the very end.
This is a must-read for anyone who loves animals, historical fiction, or simply a beautifully told story. Jillian Forsberg has crafted a novel that is not only entertaining but also deeply poetic leaving a lasting impact long after the final page is turned. I truly loved this book!

Alexander (Sander) helps her do this so she can engage in intellectual pursuits that are not afforded to girls and women of those times.
While Galland creates a very compelling narrative that keeps the reader engaged, I struggled to maintain interest in the very beginning. That changed as the story progressed, and I truly enjoyed this book!
The author's meticulous research is evident in the rich portrayal of the characters and the vivid settings, which transport the reader to the medieval period. As a fan of Shakespeare, it was fun to see him as a supporting character in the book, as well as a friend and admirer of Sander.
Both protagonists, Alexander and Joan, are complex characters whose journey is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. Galland's writing style is eloquent and immersive, effortlessly drawing the reader into the world of the story and the life-or-death drama unfolding around them. The plot is carefully crafted, full of unexpected twists and turns that add depth to the narrative. The seamless blending of historical detail and fictional elements makes for a truly enriching reading experience.
The historically accurate supporting characters, such as William Shakespeare, John Heminges, and Richard Burbage, are equally well-developed, each adding a layer of nuance to the story. The interpersonal relationships and dynamics of the Lord Chamberlain’s Men acting companies are portrayed with authenticity, making the characters feel genuine and multi-dimensional. It also provides justification for many of Alexander’s poor fictional life decisions, including landing himself in the middle of a massive political coup against Queen Elizabeth.
While the novel's pacing is generally well-executed, there are moments when the narrative lingers longer than necessary, which may test the patience of some readers in the very beginning.
Overall, "Boy" is a captivating and rewarding read that offers a unique blend of history and fiction. Galland's masterful storytelling and attention to detail make this novel a must-read for fans of historical fiction.

"The Pretender" by Jo Harkin is a brilliantly written historical fiction novel that transports readers back to a tumultuous period in English history set in 1487. It focuses on the intriguing story of young Lambert Simnel. He was thrust into the center of a conspiracy as a pretender to the English throne, whose royal family claimed him to be the rightful heir during the reign of Richard III. Simnel, a boy of humble origins, is taken under the wing of powerful figures who groom him to be the lost Earl of Warwick, heir to Richard III's throne. Harkin’s portrayal of Simnel is both compelling and complex—he is not merely a pawn in the hands of ambitious men but a boy trying to navigate his identity amidst the lies and manipulations of those around him.
Hidden away his entire life and raised as a peasant farm boy (named John), he is suddenly plucked from his “family”, kept in secrecy, given a new identity (Lambert Simnel) and educated in royal life as he is transported to Ireland. It is there that he meets his love and one of my favorite characters, Joan, and where he is crowned King Edward VI. There are several problems, though - Joan herself is a problem, and King Henry VII is still in power and hunting the heads of all who claim allegiance to Edward (Lambert).
Harkin's storytelling prowess brings to life the tumultuous and complex political landscape of 15th-century England, Ireland, and Scotland with vivid imagery, meticulous attention to historical detail, and the most fantastic sense of laugh-out-loud humor throughout the book! This compelling narrative skillfully weaves together the personal struggles of the protagonist with the grandeur of royal court intrigue, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of historical fiction. I found myself fully embedded in Lambert's emotions over and over again.
The author's meticulous research is evident in historical details but she also includes so many surrounding descriptive bits that make the setting truly come alive. The characters are multidimensional, each with their own aspirations, dilemmas, colorful personalities, and faults, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative (and again - at times so funny while staying true to the time!). Harkin's prose is evocative and eloquent, effortlessly transporting the reader to a bygone era filled with political machinations, royal ambitions, and personal tribulations.
"The Pretender" is an immersive and captivating exploration of power, identity, and the human desire for belonging as you watch Lambert struggle with who he is and where he belongs. Harkin deftly explores the psychological complexities of her characters, drawing the reader into a world of conflicting loyalties, moral quandaries, and the timeless quest for truth and justice. Lambert has lived so many lives in such a short amount of time that he realizes he yearns for love and freedom to be himself, whomever he chooses to be.
Overall, "The Pretender" is a masterful work of historical fiction that will delight both history enthusiasts and lovers of engaging storytelling. Jo Harkin's skillful blend of fact and fiction creates a gripping narrative that is both intellectually stimulating, humorous, and emotionally resonant. This book is a must-read for anyone with an appreciation for richly detailed historical fiction and the enduring allure of royal intrigue.

12/13/2024 Melissa Larsen’s "The Lost House" is an atmospheric and haunting thriller about a troubled young woman, Agnes, invited to her ancestral Icelandic home by a top-rated true crime podcaster (Nora). It's the fortieth anniversary of the gruesome murders of Agnes' grandmother and her infant aunt.
The community has always blamed Agnes' grandfather, but this is a man she loved and adored. There is no way he could have committed such brutal and heinous murders. But her grandfather and father would never speak of that day, and now he's dead. Her relationship with her father has always been a little distant, so nothing stops her from leaving California and doing a little investigation on her own and with this podcaster.
Larsen weaves together an icy web of secrets, tragedy, and relentless determination for redemption from multiple angles and multiple characters - it's really fascinating. From the very first page, I was captivated by the haunting setting of Bifröst, Iceland—its snow-covered landscapes and small-town tensions becoming characters in their own right. Larsen masterfully balances the claustrophobic intimacy of a remote village, that small-town feel where everyone is in your business and knows everything about you, with the vast, freezing cold expanses of the Icelandic winter, creating a palpable sense of unease that lingers throughout.
Agnes is a compelling protagonist; her vulnerability and grit make her journey to uncover the truth deeply personal and engrossing. Her partnership with Nora, who's sharp and ambitious, adds layers of tension and intrigue as old wounds are reopened for Agnes and new mysteries emerge. The dual timelines of the decades-old murder and the present-day disappearance of a college girl are seamlessly interwoven, each revelation more shocking than the last. I often found myself putting the book down and saying - what the....!
Larsen’s writing is both evocative and razor-sharp, pulling readers into a world where every character hides a secret, and nothing is as it seems. The twists are genuinely jaw-dropping, and the final chapters left me breathless. "The Lost House" is an unforgettable exploration of loyalty, betrayal, and the lengths we’ll go to protect those we love. 5+ stars!!

Molly tries to busy herself at work at the Regency Grand Hotel, but she can’t help but think that those closest to her at work and in their apartment building are gaslighting her. The mystery itself is pretty predictable, but I enjoyed seeing more of Juan and Molly’s relationship and everyday life in this book - especially during the holidays.

The main female character is Sariyah (Ri), a Black teen who has a special gift of sensing the needs of others.
Several years back, Ri’s best friend went missing after an encounter with a man at their school bus stop. Did Ri sense his need and not know how to process it? Could that have helped to find her friend? She has never been found, but a white girl who also went missing at the same time in the same area received national media attention, and although it was not a happy ending, she was found quickly. The world seemed to have forgotten Ri’s best friend, as they do most girls of color. And now another of her closest friends has gone missing, and she’s going to do everything she can, including the use of her gift, to try to find her.
The author's poignant storytelling and vivid descriptions drew me into the lives of the characters, making me feel every emotion as if I were right there with them. This book delves deep into the complexities of human relationships, addressing themes of love, loss, social injustice, mental health, and resilience in a refreshingly honest and relatable manner that should be discussed more. Desamours skillfully weaves together multiple storylines, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected lives that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
The character development in "Needy Little Things" is truly remarkable. Each character is flawed and real, making them incredibly compelling and easy to invest in. The raw honesty and authenticity in Desamours' writing make this a truly unforgettable read.
The pacing is perfect, with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. And the ending - oh my! What an ending! I’m definitely looking forward to book two!

Ann Thomas is an enchanting, gothic tale that skillfully blends mystery and the supernatural with richly developed characters. Set in the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of the ancestral estate of Thorne Hall, the story revolves around the current Thorne family, who is bound to 13 spirits within the home, each with their own unique and compelling story.
The protagonist is Elegy, a young woman whose father is dying, and her stepmother keeps herself hidden away in the attic. She has grown up with the spirits, some of whom are her closest friends, some nurturing, and others terrifying. Their ancestor, Jasper Thorne, brought the 13 spirits into the home through a series of seances in the 1890s.
The spirits are bound and obey whoever is the current master of the Thorne manor, and once Elegy's father dies, this responsibility will be passed on to her. A plumbing issue causes flooding and severe damage to an outdated mansion wing, requiring some modernization and restoration. The family's trusted helper enlists his adult son to travel to the estate to assist with the repairs, and Elegy falls hard, deeply in love, yet she knows she can never leave her home and these spirits behind.
The plot unfolds at a captivating pace, maintaining tension while allowing moments of reflection on grief, love, desire, and redemption. Each spirit’s backstory is interwoven seamlessly with Elegy's journey, adding layers to the narrative and engaging the reader's emotions. The themes of connection, loss, and the search for belonging resonate deeply.
Thomas's writing is vivid and immersive, vividly bringing Thorne Hall—and its ethereal inhabitants—to life. The description of the mansion, the spirits, and Elegy's clothing was incredible! This is not a book to read, put down, and pick up later at a leisurely pace. There are many characters and background stories, and when I skipped a day of reading, I found that I needed to go back a bit to connect some dots.
The strength of Thomas’s character development and atmospheric writing created an overall enriching, supernatural experience with an unexpected twist at the end. I enjoyed the love story within the book, not only between Elegy and Atticus but also between Elegy's friends Hugo and Sebastian. And while Elegy had her friends and Atticus to lean on for support, Thomas created a character who had to dig deep within herself to finally fight for the life she desperately wanted.
"The Spirit Collection of Thorne Hall" has a captivating premise and a heartfelt exploration of the deep desire for human connections with a gothic, deadly, magic, and spirit-filled vibe.

I have so many sections of this book highlighted to save and reflect on for later. This beautifully written novel has captured a piece of my heart and I know it will stay with me for a long time.
It is a heartwarming tale that centers around the deep connections between people, a bit of astrology, and the enchanting Full Moon Coffee Shop, which only appears under the light of a full moon. It is suggested by mysterious “strangers” to potential patrons who are struggling in their life. Set in a quaint, open-air, and mysterious café, this novel is a soothing escape into a world where time slows down, and the “baristas” at this coffee shop know exactly what you need - no need for menus!
Mochizuki's writing is both lyrical and evocative, painting vivid pictures of the cozy café, the scrumptious desserts, soothing teas, and most of all its eclectic servers. The patrons of the Full Moon Coffee Shop are all seeking answers or searching for something more in their lives in one way or another, as they are drawn into its spellbinding atmosphere. The characters who visit the café each have their own unique stories, from tales of lost love, and career failures, to forgotten dreams - can a cup of tea and Full Moon Pancakes with Astral Syrup really allow you to view your life with a new set of eyes? Or look back on your past not with regrets but as an opportunity to give yourself a second chance?
What makes this book truly special is its gentle exploration of themes like love, loss, and the passage of time through the stars. Mochizuki has a gift for crafting characters that feel real and relatable, each one leaving a lasting impression on the reader. The conversations shared over steaming cups of tea, coffee, and delectable descriptive foods are filled with so much wisdom, warmth, and a touch of melancholy, making the book a comforting companion for anyone who has ever felt lost or in need of a self-transforming boost.
"The Full Moon Coffee Shop" is more than just a novel; it's an experience. Mochizuki invites readers to sit down, savor the moment, and reflect on the beauty of life's fleeting moments, our connections to others (however small and insignificant they may seem to you), and our connection to the universe. This book is a must-read for anyone who loves stories that nourish the soul and warm the heart. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!

The plot felt disjointed and meandered without much purpose. I struggled to connect with the characters and found little reason for such an extensive backstory into their parents. The writing, while descriptive, felt overly flowery and often pulled me out of the story.
I was expecting a magical, intriguing, and engaging read, especially given the promising premise, but this book just didn't deliver anything substantial for me. It masterfulTrisha Sakhlecha’s “The Inheritance” is a gripping psychological thriller that will linger in your mind long after you finish reading it. It masterfully weaves together complex and deeply moving themes of cultural heritage, power and privilege, and harmful family secrets. Set against the backdrop of an elite, powerful Indian family, the novel unravels the complex relationships between three siblings as they grapple with the dark legacy left by tragedy decades earlier and deep parental manipulation throughout their upbringing.
Sakhlecha’s writing is both sharp and evocative, drawing the reader into a world where appearances are deceptive, loyalties are tested, and siblings are competitive against one another. The intricate plot is filled with unexpected twists, making it impossible to predict what will happen next. The characters are deeply flawed yet compelling, several carrying their own burdens, character flaws, and secrets that slowly come to light.
What makes The Inheritance truly stand out is its exploration of contemporary social issues, such as gender dynamics and the pressures of familial expectations, all while maintaining the suspense of a high-stakes mystery. Sakhlecha’s ability to blend these elements seamlessly makes the novel not just a thrilling read, but also a thought-provoking one.
This is a novel about the weight of inheritance - not just of wealth or property, but of history, manipulation, trauma, and identity. It's a hauntingly beautiful addition to the dark academia genre, weaving together themes of mystery, magic, friendship, love, and the pursuit of knowledge in an atmospheric setting.
The story follows Maeve, who has suffered great tragedies due to her father's crimes. He was responsible for unleashing the Aldervine in Inverly and causing its destruction, thousands of lives lost, families separated, and, as a result, she was placed in an orphanage. As she learns that her father is innocent, she runs from the orphanage, changes her identity, and enlists as an apprentice in the Otherwhere Post to learn more about her father's past life, search for his missing journal, and clues that could prove his innocence. But clearing her father's name means identifying those who are truly guilty of mass murder and destruction - which puts Maeve and her closest friends in danger.
Taylor’s writing is lyrical and immersive, drawing me into this magical scriptomancy world filled with shadowy libraries, ancient tomes, enchanted letters, and magical inks - and the intoxicating allure of forbidden knowledge through special scribing skills. The dark academia atmosphere Taylor creates is exciting and alluring. The university buildings are mysterious, and some are part of a forgotten past. Old libraries, ancient books, clandestine meetings, cemeteries, hidden cabins, slow-burn romance, jumping between worlds, and an intoxicating sense of danger - all make for a mesmerizing read.
Maeve is a complex and vividly rendered character who grapples with her sense of belonging and the heavy weight of her secrets. Not only could those secrets get her killed or locked away, but the entire school would despise her, and the boy she loves would absolutely hate her. Maeve and Tristin's characters are so richly developed, each grappling with their own demons, desires, trust issues, and feelings of isolation. But their need and underlying love for each other kept the pages turning!
The friendship that developed between Nan and Maeve was so beautiful. I loved how Nan never gave up on her and encouraged her to trust others and open her heart. I also loved the relationship between Nan and Shea and how they were all like found family.
I thought this was a captivating YA story and absolutely loved it!

J.M. Varese's "The Company" is a compelling exploration of human ambition, intrigue, and the dark side of business ethics and family secrets in the 18J.M. Varese's "The Company" is a compelling exploration of human ambition, intrigue, and the dark side of business ethics and family secrets in the 1870s. The narrative weaves together the lives of diverse characters touched in some way or another by the luxurious London wallpaper company, Braithwhite & Company, each driven by their desires, fears, and aspirations, making for a richly textured story.
One of the novel's standout features is its deep and mysterious character development. Varese masterfully creates complex characters who feel real and relatable, even when they make morally questionable decisions based on the horrific experiences they endured as children. The protagonist Lucy Braithwhite, in particular, is captivating, thought-provoking, and strong - highlighting the often blurry line between what may be her personal ambition and ethical compromise as she wavers from resurfaced memories of the damage and death the company has caused and concern for her family’s survival.
The plot is meticulously crafted, with twists and turns that keep the reader engaged from start to finish. Varese's writing style is both elegant and intriguing. The pacing is well-balanced, maintaining a steady momentum that keeps the reader invested in the outcome of the sinister plot unfolding.
"The Company" can also offer us a critical look at the modern corporate world, raising important questions about the cost of success and the true nature of power. While the story is fictional, its themes resonate deeply with real-world issues, making it a meaningful read as we still see this over a hundred years later where companies place profits over people.
Loosely based on the arsenic wallpaper poisonings in the late 19th century, “The Company" is a highly recommended historical fiction read for those who enjoy haunting, gothic dramas with a touch of suspense. Varese has delivered a memorable and impactful novel that lingers long after the last page.

Skipper's storytelling is immersive, drawing readers into a world full of southern racial tensions in the late 1950s in Charleston, South Carolina with many historical events dispersed throughout the book. The book's strength lies in its intricate plot and well-developed characters, almost overly developed, as it took me more than halfway through the book to enter the main plot. However, learning each character’s secrets and motives, made for an engaging narrative.
The protagonist, Vanessa, is a complex, multi-dimensional character whose journey as an African American passing as White created an exploration of identity and the depths of human deception for survival in that era. Skipper masterfully portrays her struggles and growth, making her a character readers can root for.
The supporting cast from Vanessa’s high school days; White childhood best friend, Trisha, Sister Rosalie, and Black high school boyfriend Barry Hale are all equally well-crafted characters, adding depth and richness to the story. The friendship between Vanessa and Trisha is a story within itself. It’s beautiful, inspiring, and the kind of friendship we all long to have.
The pacing of "Deceptive Calm" is another highlight. Skipper balances an atmosphere of unease and high tension with quieter, introspective scenes, creating a rhythm that keeps the reader hooked. The twists and turns are suspenseful with each revelation adding to the intrigue of the danger you can sense ahead.
Skipper's writing style is descriptive yet concise, allowing readers to vividly imagine the settings and emotional experiences as we follow Vanessa’s life throughout the book. Through high school first loves, great pain, loss, college, a highly successful career, to a wealthy stay-at-home wife and mother. The atmosphere the author creates is palpable, enhancing the overall reading experience.
The book is not without its flaws. Some plot points and sex scenes feel slightly contrived, and a few character decisions seem unrealistic, pulling the reader out of the story momentarily. Despite these minor issues, the overall quality of the narrative remains strong.
In conclusion, "Deceptive Calm" is a fascinating storyline that fans of thrillers and historical fiction readers will appreciate.

“Buried Deep and Other Stories” by Naomi Novik is a compelling collection of thirteen short stories that catapult the reader across her past anthologies. The stories include several well-known characters and stories outside of her own series as well. Novik also provides an inside look into her story building before each story, which is an absolute joy to read.
“Spinning Silver” has always been a favorite book of mine, and I loved the short stories added to this collection, as well as those included in the Scholomance Trilogy. The book also includes a Greek mythology and classic retelling with fairies, dragons, and magic sprinkled about. Each story is a masterfully crafted gem, showcasing Novik's exceptional talent for weaving intricate plots and developing rich, nuanced characters within the constraints of short fiction.

Giordano's vivid descriptions transport you into the atmospheric small-town setting, making you feel as if you're right there alongside Tempest.
What truly sets this book apart is the way it seamlessly blends elements of the paranormal with the emotional depth of the characters. The exploration of themes like grief, identity, and the power of family ties and deep friendships during life's most difficult times is both poignant and thought-provoking. "I'm certainly not a stranger to how quickly life can change, but it's almost alarming how fast all of this is starting to feel normal. A strange normal, but normal nonetheless. For a moment there it just felt like I was on my way to grab food with a friend before class, as if everything I have ever known is not being rewritten."
The overall reading experience is immensely satisfying - it is not a book you can easily put down! The plot twist is intense and at times had me in tears, especially as one character proclaims, "All I've ever wanted is to be a hero, Tempest. Thank you for letting me be yours."
