this was honestly such a bingeable book, but i felt like the actual romance lacked a bit of substance. it felt mostly physical, we got no real communication between the mc’s! all they did was plan a proposal and fake date! we never saw any time spent outside of the plot and i think it could’ve helped make their romance feel more real. it had its cute moments, but i wouldn’t say there was anything special about it.

book 1 was easy to read and i think bc i was sleep deprived it didn’t take any energy to enjoy it but this was completely different. this felt like a filler book with a smidge of actual plot. everything i felt about rocky and phoebe was completely gone, i could have cared less about them. trent is literally scott van wright but frat version, i think this series is going to be dragged out and compares nothing to the addicted series!!! we kept going in circles and why was the smut always 10 pages long ...more

this had its cute and emotional moments and i think if you liked book 1 you could enjoy this!

and while i think this story is told really well, i just honestly could not stand the writing style. the characters were just overtly the stereotypical “awkward moody teenager who just wants to be left alone” and don’t get me wrong i understand why but i think this book missed the mark by like 10 years.
“You could call me Monday. Nobody likes Mondays.”
genuinely nobody talks like this, it’s giving facebook mom stealing old tumblr quotes and posting them on her page.
i just don’t think the writing style was enjoyable at all for me, i couldn’t take it serious when i wanted to. and this honestly saddens me because i think the plot was so so good, it’s just the writing /:
all in all i enjoyed the story not the writing which in the end ruined it for me, i think if you’re able to look past it then this book can be enjoyable, i see why people have loved it but i am not of them.

rosie and aiden are academic rivals in a writing workshop who are forced to work together on a manuscript combing their two genres, romance and lit fic. i honestly really did love to see the academic rivals part because it felt real, they both were always at each others neck finding something to critique.
i also loved the small bits we got from the manuscript as they’re mostly written in the mmc’s pov and it was very much them writing about their feelings but disguising it as their book characters’ thoughts.
i overall enjoyed it BUT i think i eventually got a little bored around the 60% mark, plus i didn’t really like rosie’s attitude about romances MUST have hea’s to be considered romances it just felt extremely stereotypical. also the mmc’s reasoning for his attitude made sense up until the end where it was kinda used to excuse his behavior….
i still recommend it to anyone looking for writing academic rivals to lovers and a peruvian fmc

beneath these cursed stars is a spin off series from the these hollow vows duology. i was unaware of this before i requested it so for the past MONTH beneath these cursed stars is a spin off series from the these hollow vows duology. i was unaware of this before i requested it so for the past MONTH i forced myself to read that prior to this and i would just like my TIME and MONEY back. that duology was mid to begin with and this was honestly so extremely boring. if this wasn’t an arc i would’ve dnf’d it 15% in. i did not like jasalyn then and i do not like her now.
i do not recommend this unless you loved these hollow vows and im so confused as to why this is marketed as its own series when its clearly obvious you need to read the duology first and its apart of the same universe. the math isn’t mathing. anyways what a waste of time and do not recommend.

if you’re in search for a mulan retelling with a badass female warrior fmc who is literally WAOLOM c “They would never let a woman hold on to power.”
if you’re in search for a mulan retelling with a badass female warrior fmc who is literally WAOLOM coded this is FOR YOU!! when meilin finds out she’s to marry an abusive man like her father she disguises herself as a man and enlists in the war, and with discovering she’s connected to the spirit realm and able to use this to her advantage she becomes invincible.
the way that she went though soo much in this book and she still was able to prove how much stronger and capable she was compared to every man?! the definition of a girl-boss idc! she took all the stereotypes thrown around about women in this book and proved each one wrong time after time. she didn’t care if she was smaller or in-experienced she pushed herself to prove just how strong and powerful she is.
“I was a woman, and I had dared go after more than my allotted cards in life. I had disguised myself as a boy, and I had gotten away with it. And now, like a novice gambler who bets once and wins, I was hungry for more. I felt ready to slide all my chips into the beckoning pot.”
now let’s talk about the romance,as for prince lui sky and cao ming lei, i was not at all expecting it, im a little torn i cannot lie i do think we should’ve gotten more interactions with sky and meilin because i thought they were really cute but i just really want to see a lot more lei in book two SO BAD!! i did not expect the romance to have me giggling like i was!
overall this was such an amazing read, i do think that the pacing mid-way felt slightly off and made it easy to put down but once you get into this book it’s easily fast paced and when people tell you there’s betrayals best believe they’re not joking, i was gasping out loud multiple times!!

ever since the spanish love deception ive been extremely reluctant to pick up another book by elena and that was for good reason! her writing style and plots are never for me! this could’ve been shorter, plus what is the obsession with making the fmc’s so quirky and awkward! i definitely think this was better than sld by a landslide but it wasn’t good enough to become a favorite of mine sadly. it was mediocre at best.
this is definitely for people in search of small town’s, fake dating/engagement, no third act (thankfully), and a very sunshine/sunshine couple. this was marketed as a standalone but i definitely think i should’ve read the long game prior to this since the characters overlap heavily and it did have me confused at first but this overall wasn’t for me sadly.

this book was so well written, i would a thousand percent buy a physical copy and im glad this was my first book by this author.

just like my roommate is a vampire, this was extremely boring and honestly could’ve been made into a short novella. the characters were very bland, and i love a cinnamon roll mmc but this somehow made me hate it??
on top of this the fake dating is so predictable can authors please try something new with the trope. i personally think this was better in ways to the first but i wouldn’t recommend it to anyone with similar book taste to me.
