I love her wri**spoiler alert** I have enjoyed Lisa See’s books and recently went on a binge of the audiobooks. This one is my least favorite so far. I love her writing and intimate storytelling. The way she gets you acquainted with the characters makes it feel like you know them. The same here but I started losing interest towards the middle. I almost quit but felt the need to see if it got better.
I learned a how a laotong relationship between female friends was more intimate, emotionally than a marriage to a man. I thought it would be wonderful to have a friend for life but sad that the adults initiated the bond with ulterior motives. It took me a while to realize that it became a lesbian relationship, even though both girls had to be married and have children. The ending was so sad and just ruined the book for me. That their friendship could be broken because of a misunderstanding mad me mad. Why didn’t Snowflower come and explain herself to Lily? Why would Lily be so angry. I guess that’s what happens but I hated to see Snowflower suffer because of Lily’s pride and jealousy.
The special written language between the women, Nü Shu was very interesting and I liked the way they wrote to each other on the fan and passed it back and forth. But, ugh, what a sad story all because of a misunderstanding. ...more
